After unfortunate incidents at Dallesandros we found Barry's. Nice polite and accommodating. Sandwich was fresh with right amount of crisp in bread. We all got mushroom steak sandwiches and it was very satisfying also tried their home drinks which kids enjoyed. Forget over hyped places come here and enjoy your food

Amazing -- highly recommend. Better than Dalessandros? Don't @ me. Neighborhood vibe. The women working the counter are so friendly and seem to have a ball working together. We had the chicken cheesesteak, fries, and mozz sticks. The chicken was diced thin but still juicy. The bread: meat ratio was perfect! Steak fries were still crispy when I got home.

Local friends have been talking about Barry's as a bit of a lesser known secret to get cheesesteaks. I finally gave it a try and have been twice so far. First time, the Alpine: steak with Swiss cheese and a brown gravy. It was ok, flavor was good, a little short on the gravy with could have used a little more seasoning/salt (just my opinion.) We got a bunch of sides. Second time, I went for a more traditional steak: fried onions, peppers, American cheese, and ketchup. Very solid! Onions and peppers were fried up just right adding a bit of sweetness. I also got the chicken tenders which were really good, plus split a side of mozzarella sticks (5 per order is a little skimpy), and fries (they're like a steak fry, large size side, and just enough salt for me.) Definitely will be sharing the recommendation to get a steak from here.

Loved that there was no long line like Dalessandros. The cheesesteak smelled amazing!!! You could see the gooey cheese, onions piled high, soft chewy bun, and hefty portion of meat! Took my first bite and it did not match up with the smell. The steak itself was bland no flavor whatsoever. A little salt and pepper on the meat while cooking would elevate to the next level! The fries were hot, but the cheese was merely lukewarm (although she warned me). The team was great! Barry's soda was pretty good I had the Raspberry Lime and Orange.

Been a hot minute since I've had a good Philly cheese steak so naturally, my first stop in the Philly area was this place. I actually tried to go to dellasandros first, only to find it was closed for construction or outta business. That said, don't sleep on Barry's. Old school diner vibe with a friendly staff serving up some tasty steak sammiches. Worth checkin out for sure. 4.3 outta 5

Below average cheesesteak. The neat quality was low and although this sandwich is meant to be heavy this sandwich was really heavy. It just tasted oily. It was hard to enjoy. Fries were good and hearty. They make their own sodas which is cool but I didn't try one. Mera's Tip: try a homemade soda

I was driving with my windows down and caught the aroma of their cheesesteaks being fried up. I went into a trance. My free will - Gone. My protein bar - Ignored. Drove by here for years and was always curious how their steaks were. Now I know. Some things to point out - The steak was not cooked to order. The meat was pre-cooked and scooped out of a container. (I suppose that's common in fast-paced steak joints, although I do prefer the steak cooked fresh to order) ketchup wasn't heinz. Their off brand ketchup kinda murdered my steak. (Not their fault) The cheesesteak was ok overall It's about as good as any local pizza joint. Steak / a bit bland but ok. Cheese / mild flavor but ok. Not a big fan of their fried onions. Roll was fresh and very good. An Ok place to go for a cheesesteak craving. * The woman upfront was super cool *

Beef cheesesteak with provolone, mayo, fried onions, and brown gravy

Atmosphere: Barry's was fairly empty when we arrived for our food. A clean, sleek interior. Service: We ordered our cheesesteak for pickup, and it was ready for us when we arrived. No complaints in terms of service! Food: We ordered a beef cheesesteak with provolone, mayo, fried onions, brown gravy, and a side of ketsup. The beef was juicy and flavorful, and we thought that the proportions of all the elements were optimal. The gravy and onions added another deep and savory layer to the humble cheesesteak, and can make for a bit of a mess! A delicious and filling meal nonetheless! Overall: A fantastic take on a classic Philly dish. No problems ordering ahead of time, and the cheesesteak remained pretty well intact despite the gravy, mayo, and juicy steak. We'd highly recommend Barry's over some more stereotypically "touristy" types of cheesesteak joints.

It's listed as a steakhouse because they use premium cuts of steak in their sandwiches. Menu: they are so busy on the weekends that you can only customize the sandwiches on the weekdays. I let my son order and he chose "The Classic" for us to try. Since we were having dinner in a couple of hours, we decided to share. It is pricey for the size. I'm used to having it a footlong at most other places and these are more like half the size. After placing our order on the kiosk, it was ready within minutes. The Classic consists of prime rib, Cooper sharp cheese, buttery steakhouse seasoning with sautéed onions all held intact by this sesame hoagie. OMG!!! My son and I loved it!! I'm salivating as I am writing this review. The Cooper sharp cheese just melts everything together. You can tastes the high quality cuts in their meats. It is now in my top #3. I will definitely be returning to try their other popular creations. Seating is limited. My one little complaint is that I wish they would wipe the tables and barstools down. It was sticky and dirty. John's Roast Pork is legendary in Philly - it's been around for decades - 96 years to be exact! I'd been there once before many years ago (couldn't remember anything about it) and thought it was time for a revisit. I got the large Roast Pork sandwich - you can see from the attached picture the 'preferred toppings' (Dad's Way) are: Mustard Raw onions Hot seeded pepper American cheese I had only the Mild Provolone cheese on mine - no mustard, raw onions or seeded pepper. I would have had cooked (caramelized) onions - but they had only raw...and American cheese was not a choice for me (I was raised on it). The pork is supposed to be 'slow roasted (7 hours) pork shoulder (pork butt)' - and it may very well be, but it reminds me of the meat that's carved off the large vertical rotisseries for gyros. It doesn't look that appealing - it's like a large sub sandwich. The pork was soft, tender and seasoned well - the roll was very good - John's had been getting its bread from Carangi Bakery. However, the bakery closed due to a fire so I'm not sure where the bread is from, unless it reopened. I finally satisfied my curiosity about John's and went to see what the sandwich was like. While it probably ranks as one of the better 'pork/steak' sandwiches in Philly, I just couldn't get excited about it.

I live an hour away from Verona so when I heard this place was only a 15 min drive away from our hike, I knew I had to stop by. The well known Verona's did not disappoint. Unique to this pizzeria, the pizzas AND cheesesteaks are award winning. The wife and I ordered one of each. When we pulled up, this place was packed for 12PM. It hustlin and busslin! I ordered at the desk and waited maybe 25 mins (not bad at all for ordering in the spot and with the place being busy). Pizza: we ordered the "Hot Honey" at $27. We attacked this thing within 2 minutes of coming out the oven. Incredible dough with depth and texture. Perfect balance of sweet (sauce/honey) and savory (pepperonis/grated parm). Topped with fresh basil and hot honey. I wished there was more hot honey but to each their own. Elite pizza!! I highly recommend Cheesesteak ($18): we ordered it with fried onions and Cooper Sharp. Delicious bread, I'm assuming it's home made and if it's not it's definitely high quality bread. Tender ribeye steak chopped and mixed beautifully with the cheese and onions. Meaty sandwich for sure. I prefer my cheesesteaks a bit more cheesier but I was a happy camper as was my wife. All in all, this joint is pumping out top tier "pizzeria food". This will be my post hike reward anytime I'm in the area. Dare I say Verona's goes toe to toe with Angelo's Pizzeria (highly regarded pizzeria) as best in the state! 5/5

I was in…read moreChester for a football game, but made some time to stop by both of the city's famous Cheesesteak stands. The Original Pat's King of Steaks is located in South Philly, specifically in the Passyunk Square neighborhood. It sits at the intersection of East Passyunk, South 9th, and Wharton. The building has many different signs and lights that will let you know that you are in the correct place. Since this is in the city, parking can be somewhat tricky. There are times I have had to circle around, or get whomever I was with to drop me off and have them come back. However, sometimes I have secured street parking not too far away. This will just depend on the time of day, and really the luck of the draw, if you are able to easily locate parking. This is an outdoor stand, meaning there is no inside to enter. You will order at the counter, and food is packaged to-go. However, there are some tables surrounding the building that you can dine at. They are all under the roof overhang, so you will be somewhat protected from the elements. On this day, it was not terribly busy. I really did not have to wait in any kind of line before being able to place my order. This was around 4:00 on a Saturday in September. First, I took some time to look over the menu posted near the sidewalk. There is also a helpful guide on "how to order a steak," for those that are unfamiliar. When it was my first time here, I actually found the humorous display very helpful. I placed my order for two classic Cheesesteak Wit, made with Cheez Whiz. When ordering, you specify if you want Wit (with onion) or Wit-Out (no onion). Given that I was wanting to try the most authentic sandwich I could, I opted for the onions and the traditional Cheez Whiz. My sandwiches only took a minute or so to be ready. As stated, it was not busy, and they are able to whip up these sandwiches rather quickly. I ended up taking my sandwiches to-go, and having them for meals the next few days. They reheat well, and have good flavor. I like having the onions on it for an added texture. Pricing is not terrible. Pat's is more expensive than Geno's by $2 for the same sandwich. My total was $36 after tax for the two sandwiches, making them $18 each. You definitely are paying for the experience and the novelty that is coming to this famous corner of Philadelphia. But, this price is not out of the ballpark of other places in the area. The sandwich is a decent size, and you can definitely get two meals out of it if you are eating it by yourself. So, all that considering, it is a fair value for what you pay. It seemed like most menu items were $20 or under. FYI, they take both cash and card. The staff are quick and efficient. However, it will not be the most friendly or pleasant experience, especially if you do not know how to order. I am not saying that the experience was poor by any means, but be aware that this is not Disney World and they will not be overly kind to you at the order window. Being from Pittsburgh, I had never had a true Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwich until a few years ago when I visited for the first time. Since that trip, I typically make it a point to stop and get a few sandwiches to take back home with me. I enjoy coming to Pat's for the atmosphere, and the true taste of Philadelphia. I recommend giving it a try at least once, just to say you have had it. Plus, the sandwiches are pretty tasty, too. I will definitely be back here on future trips to South Philly.
