We got a weekend place in Ghent about ten years ago, and drove past that lovely building regularly, wondering what business - if any - would come in and bring it back to life. We couldn't be happier with the place. I've eaten there brunch there several times, and we get bread and/or other carb deliciousness there almost every weekend, so I've made my way through most of the vegetarian options they have. The bread is amazing, fresh and delicious, bread the way it's meant to be. The walnut apricot bread is standout, but even the plain baguettes are so delicious I never know if one is going to survive the three minute drive back to the house. Among the pastries, I don't think I've had a single thing that's disappointed, but the pistachio croissants should probably be illegal. I'm afraid I'm going to wake up in the parking lot one day covered in croissant flakes and pieces of pistachio filling. Also noteworthy are the chocolate croissants and the regular old croissants, but really, I don't think you can go wrong at that pastry counter. For brunch/meal items, I've discovered the shirred eggs and I don't think anything can ever make me learn how to quit them. Eggs baked in a small cast iron skillet with cream, leeks, mushrooms and gruyere. Absolutely delicious. There are a few other items I really want to try, but I can't bring myself to order anything else yet. My husband loves the chicken kotlyetki, and I believe he's had the burger, shakshuka, and fried chicken sandwich, all of which he swears by. We've brought many weekend guests there who have sampled far more on the menu, and no one has ever had a negative thing to say. I can't say enough about this restaurant!! Not only is it a beautifully restored building with a very pretty Atmosphere and great food/coffee, but they also have the BEST customer service! To say the staff is wonderful is such an understatement!!...I dined here this past weekend and when I got home (after A 3 hour drive) I realized I left my purse there! I was so upset and tried to contact them via phone, email and IG but they were closed. The mgr (katie) called me after hours and told me they found my purse and since I lived far she said they would Ship it to me. I even offered to pay for shipping, but she said they would pay for it. I also had other staff members follow up and email/Message me on IG to follow up. I mean they went above and beyond and I'm SO grateful!! THANK YOU KATIE! Aside from this amazing experience, their food is high quality and totally delicious! No exaggeration, It's probably one of the top burgers I've ever had with the best crispy shoe string fries. My husband and I stopped in here last year on my way to go camping and we loved the burger so much, we drove a couple hours back up here to have it again and it did not disappoint! Their bakery is also great with a nice variety of delicious pastries we picked up for our drive home. Also If you like specialty coffees, you're in luck. Ive tried their lavender latte, turmeric latte and blueberry latte and they were all excellent. We sat on the porch, which was really pretty and they also have a few tables below on their yard. I brought my parents and brother to Bartlett House for a special birthday dinner. We had been meaning to visit for brunch, and were delighted to discover that dinner is served Thursday through Saturday evenings. First, some backstory. We've watched this area change dramatically over the last 20 years. For better or for worse, Hudson has become Brooklyn 2.0; great restaurants have popped up that source from local family farms and cater to the weekender/ AirBnB crowds. We're big fans of Local 111 in Philmont and Swoon in Hudson, and expected Bartlett House to perform on the same level (or better, if we dared dream). Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing; we'll drive the extra 15 minutes and stick to Local 111 for special occasions upstate. Some of the sticking points: - $5 charge for bread and butter. Yeah. - Only one vegetarian entree (pasta with nettle pesto), which wasn't particularly noteworthy in flavor and the pasta was so undercooked it was almost crunchy - Not great at accommodating dietary restrictions. I have a garlic intolerance, so I asked if the pasta sauce could be made without garlic. The waiter asked the chef, who said he could, but when it arrived there was plenty of sliced garlic in the nettle sauce. I picked around them, but would worry for those with more serious allergies. - Bizarre "goods of the world" for purchase, mostly made in China and Japan, none especially unique; why not keep with the local theme and highlight some of the many local artists in the Hudson Valley? One highlight of an otherwise underwhelming dinner were the fried green tomatoes, which were heavenly ($11 for two slices, but worth it to share). The coconut curry fish was also a hit with my family. We had a charming waiter, though he was new to the area and clearly not trained on the history of the establishment or building. A worthwhile and well designed stop for bistro fare between VT and NY. Sweet or savory, the menu offers just enough variety to please a family who might at first miss an american style children's menu, but then appreciate the European influence of refined restraint. Speaking of restraInt, we refrained from indulging in any of them, but oggled over some mouth watering pastries behind the display. An added perk of this place is the wall to ceiling bookshelf - the "Humans of New York" book occupied the children long enough for a civilized meal with my husband. read more

The pastries and cookies have been consistently excellent each time we have been there, and the bread I have has from Bartlett house has been great also. If you're looking for delicious food and superb service in a sublime setting somewhat off the beaten path, I strongly recommend paying a visit to Bartlett House. I recently enjoyed a fantastic lunch on the porch overlooking the small but beautiful flower garden in Ghent's blink-or-you'll-miss-it downtown. The kind and attentive waiter (Nick?) made this the perfect dining experience. I was glad to have solicited his food and drink suggestions; everything he recommended was top-notch. I hope to be able to return before too long. Btw, though I'd eaten too much to take advantage, I did take a stroll along the pastry display. I'd recommend leaving room for something sweet. read more

What a treat to see this venue back in business, and with such a team of pros behind the scenes. Huge kudos for the exceptional renovation, which has transformed a long-shuttered building into a gorgeous, vintage-inspired French bistro, complete with gleaming wood floors and furniture, tile walls, charming artwork, and a gorgeous coffee bar and pastry case. I haven't tried the cooked entrees yet (hope to soon), but the pastry, coffee, and iced tea have been uniformly excellent. My favorite: the pear and rosewater muffin, which is crisp and chewy on the outside and light and tender on the inside. The staff has always been friendly and helpful when I've visited -- a nice change from some of the French-style bakeries in Hudson and the Berkshires that leave a lot to be desired in the attitude department. My suggestion: pay a visit before the weather turns cold, on a day when you've got time to spare. Pull up a chair on the porch and have a great, relaxing meal by yourself or with a friend. What a great find! I came across Bartlett House on Instagram and was intrigued by their charming decor and delicious looking pastries. I ended up having breakfast before getting here, but I would have gotten the green shakshuka for sure...looked amazing. Instead we got a sticky bun and cookie to go with a matcha latte and a chai latte to enjoy out on the patio. Can't wait to come back for brunch! Top quality continental-inspired cuisine and bakery makes for excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner in a relaxed, literate atmosphere (decorated with bookshelves!). Not cheap, but how could it be? Everything is top quality and the staff is attentive and knowledgeable. Definitely pick up some wonderful pastries and breads on your way out. Have been stopping in for cappuccino for some time now. Always enjoyed myself until last weekend. My daughter and I went to the counter and were made to feel uncomfortable by the person in charge. "We are table service only" and "are you taking your coffee to go?" When we sat down, I asked my daughter "what was that about?" She apparently was feeling the same way. I have never been treated rudely by the staff but maybe the policy is changing at this establishment. None the less I left my usual 20% tip as it was not the servers I DO NOT THINK I WILL BE BACK. read more

I love Bartlett House and absolutely seek it out whenever I'm in town. The breads and pastries are incredible. I've had their scones, croissants, and muffins, and each one is noteworthy and delicious. The breads are served around the area, and for good reason. However, the space itself is very lovely, warm, and cozy. The one time I ate non-baked goods there, I was equally impressed. The service was a bit slow and the server was a bit aloof, but the food was great. We had two shakshukas and some tea, and the meal was just as good as the pastries. It's a must-do when you're anywhere nearby! read more

Pre-pandemic I loved Bartlett House, so I imagine they probably have had trouble bouncing back, but I was disappointed after my most recent visit. Staffing is probably an issue, like at most restaurants right now, so I can understand why midweek they've switched to a more casual model where you go to the register to order your food and it comes out in carryout containers. But I think it would be nice if they would tell you what to expect when you arrive. It's underwhelming to pay $13 for a breakfast sandwich and have it come out gracelessly put together and wrapped in foil if you're not expecting it. We also had to ask for napkins and silverware and it took them some time to even find them? I could have forgiven the awkwardness of the experience if the flavors were outstanding, but both of our meals were just okay. I think they are a creative and well-intentioned crew, so hopefully they're able to get back to where they were before. read more

While this place is tastefully (if conventionally) decorated in the trendy French-country-meets-Soho-industrial style, and while the farm-to-table-ish food is quite tasty, it suffers from a major drawback: the service. On three separate visits, our party was treated as if it was their first week open, even though it has been more like eight months... It takes forever to get menus and to place an order in the dining room. The staff on the counter side still seem befuddled by their point of sale system, and can take upwards of 3-4 minutes per person just to take payment. And if you get stuck behind someone who wants a couple of specialty coffees, be prepared to kill some time. Anything but regular coffee is apparently a seventeen-step process requiring much deep thought. read more

Went for Saturday brunch last Summer, and wow.. what a disappointment. So many people rave about this place, but I'd never go back. How can you mess up yogurt, granola and fruit ?? Well, you could use plain yogurt, and some unidentifiable cubed, hard white , juiceless fruit with a yellow skin ( was it an unripe pear? A golden delicious apple? I will never know for sure ...). I've never been so happy to eat a raisin in my life. It was the only thing in this that contained any flavor or sweetness ! My friend's skillet breakfast was okay, but the toast was unbuttered, and none was offered, so it was sort of cold and dry. Service was haphazard, and the funniest part was that when I went inside to pay, no one seemed particularly interested in taking my money ! I had to wait in line behind about three people ordering bakery items, and watch two staff members just kind of hanging out and chatting while one poor man tried to run the register and fill bakery orders. Given the disappointing experience, this was the final straw . This being said, everyone I know is MAD for the pistachio croissants. Just thought I'd throw that in there !!! read more

Sunday afternoon we had just come from Art Omi which was excellent! We thought we would stop and have a glass of wine and an app! We had gone there for dinner in the past and although the tables were crowded; the dinner was excellent. We ordered wine ,beer, chicken wings and flatbread at the counter ; bill $59. No cash only credit card and tip requested! Small plastic glass for wine and can of beer. Water self serve. When our pager rang we picked up our tray. Flatbread was very small and oily, chicken wings were old and cold covered in parsley leaves with spicy pest sauce on bottom . Sign on table said to clear your table after eating which we did and brought it back to the counter. A worker asked us to take it somewhere else and we refused! read more

Beautiful building inside and out. We had the green shakshuka with some pastries and coffee, the food was very well prepared and the shakshuka was very delicious, slightly spicy and full of flavor. Decent to really good food. Unfortunately the quality varies from visit to visit. What has been consistent is the very friendly, yet inefficient service. Orders repeatedly come out in a piece meal fashion. The waitperson often does not know who gets what. The staff is very well intentioned, however, they are not properly trained. The thing is this is the case in most restaurants in Columbia and Northern Dutchess counties. While this may be ok if you're hitting a local diner (the service Is actually pretty good in most diners up here), it isn't ok for a dinner for two that costs $175+++. Delicious bread and cheese for a breakfast/brunch place. We stopped by without a reservation around 9:30 in the morning and didn't have to wait as a party of four. We split a bread basket to start, which samples all of their breads that are baked in house, and it was definitely worth it--the breads are all delicious and go very well with the jam they provide. I also had a blueberry latte which I found to be tasty; the blueberries are fresh and the flavor not from a syrup, which I absolutely enjoyed. I split a burger and a shakshuka as my main entree, both of which were fairly good; the burger was a bit overcooked for medium-rare but I found the cheese on it to be delicious, while the shakshuka was hearty and pretty tasty. The service in the establishment was overall okay--our server was a bit spacy but the bakery and hostess were both helpful--but I definitely recommend coming for the baked goods and coffee. read more

We crave the Bartlett Benedict and it never disappoints. Today we added the charred shishito peppers and it may become a craving too! Service is spectacular and the baked goods (which we aren't eating right now) are to die for. There is seating on the lovely porch and on a nice morning it is the place to be. Nice surprise in a quaint up-state vibe. Fresh baked bread is amazing, but the menu for lunch is a bit sparse. Only a handful of choices with not too many healthy options although what they have is fresh and tasty. Grilled cheese is amazing!! Service was just OK. the building has so much history and looks like a story should be told about it. Server has zero to say other than "what would you like?" Great vibe, super pretty inside. But everything else fell short. The service was impossibly slow. They lost our order. The eggs were salty and slathered in cheese. Our decaf coffees were accidentally served to us as regulars. You name it, they got it wrong.
