Holy moly. My husband and I wanted to try someplace new, and we've always passed by Bartlett's (confession: I always thought it was a furniture store -- never knew it was a restaurant!). From beginning to end, the experience was amazing. Our waiter, Sean, was attentive without being smothering. It took us so long to peruse the menu, but he didn't mind popping back in every so often to check on us. My husband picked filet mignon, which arrived as a giant, oval chunk of meat crispy-peppered-brown on the outside, warm red on the inside, and just overall amazing. The sides were mashed potatoes and cooked spinach, and he said he's never had potatoes that good. I had the Asian steak salad with mango and peanuts, and it was the perfect blend of lots of steak, some veggies, avocado and mango. The dressing is amazing. We liked the ambiance of the room -- lots of small walls and personal space, even if you're dining near another table. It's mostly dark and lit with candles and red mood lighting, though we were seated near a window so we had some natural light as well. It wasn't too loud, and a tiny note on the side of the menu notes that cell phones aren't allowed in the dining area, which is nice in a way... you don't have to hear people yapping away on their phones while you eat. It was an almost nostalgic dining experience. The bill, too, wasn't too high. For steak this quality, we were expecting it to be much more. I believe my husband's filet was around $30; my salad was $19. It's not a stuffy place, either; from what I could tell, there is no dress code, and I wore a t-shirt and jeans and was treated respectfully. They don't offer complimentary bread like a lot of steak places, which might have hurt its star rating a bit, but the orders were out pretty quickly (maybe because we dined at 6 on a Thursday?) that I didn't feel like it was lacking much. This has been one of our usual spots to go for a prime rib dinner with our son and his girlfriend, but no more. I like my prime rib medium well and it was. Medium on one end and well on the other end. She ordered a Caesar Salad and got a salad with regular dressing. My sons salad had partially frozen dressing. The reason for no return was the difficult attitude of the guy bringing our drinks. We ordered a Mississippi mudslide. It wasn't at all what we had there before. It was vodka and Kailua. That's all. The waitress also was arguing about it. we showed both a picture of the drink we had been served on a previous occasion and both argued that it wasn't possible. The drink tasted nothing like the previous one. My son was indignant but waited until we were outside to tell me that our server told another server I was a b tch. I wish he had told the manager that before we left. The operations manager stopped by and apologized. It doesn't make up for ruining a just ok meal. We will never return read more

Called yesterday and made a reservation for 4 at 6:15pm on a Saturday night. We were promptly seated at a clean booth with most of the other tables already taken up as well. The atmosphere was nice, classy, typical boys' club look for a steakhouse. My Rosette cocktail was not overly sweet and our grilled artichoke appetizer was delicious. Our server gave us hot towels for our hands after which was a nice touch. My ribs platter was huge, about a dozen ribs cooked perfectly with meat falling off the bone and the right amount of sauce. I was given another hot towel for my hands after, and I was able to substitute the cole slaw for their kale pepita slaw which had a yummy dressing. My friend's veggie burger had good flavor and texture although she felt it could be seasoned a little more. The shoestring fries were crunchy and salty. We could see other tables that had ordered burgers as well, and theirs all looked yummy. My fiance and our other friend were trying to eat healthy so they ordered the roast chicken with black beans and it was as much as you could hope for with a simple entree like that - chicken was moist, well seasoned black beans. Overall a good experience and we'll be back. Next time my fiance said he would order a burger and we will sit on the little outdoor patio area they had in front which looked cute. read more

In the 5+ years of living in Austin, I finally made a visit to Bartlett's. It's not hard to miss being on a corner and sharing the same plaza with Hopdoddy. Our server, Jared, was excellent, ensuring that we were pleased with our meals and that our glasses were never empty. As for the food, we stuck with the burgers--giving the edge to the Mushroom Swiss Burger over the Texas Burger (the latter only available on weekends). The meat was generous--I think it was close to 1/2 a pound but still a little pricey in my opinion ranging from $15-$20. Another deduction of a star came from one of the kitchen staff stopping by our table after we were halfway through our burgers to give us a topping that was meant for one of the burgers--I'm not sure where the mixup occurred (miscommunication between the kitchen and server perhaps?). This could have all been easily prevented if the staff held on to the food until the dishes were completely ready or give a heads up that we should be expecting an additional component to one of the dishes. In my opinion, I still prefer Hopdoddy's burgers but would be interested in trying other items from Bartlett's if I return. read more

This is one of those places that doesn't necessarily seem like the hip, sexy choice, but it is ALWAYS delicious, satisfying, and worth every penny. I've never walked out of here feeling like I wanted a dime or could have made the food better myself. It's just solid as can be. There quality of service, food, and atmosphere is stellar. This may show my age, but I love that I can HEAR the people I'm dining with; so many more modern restaurants have the worst acoustics, but Bartlett's is designed in a cozy, warm way that doesn't detract from conversation. It's dim and comfortable and masculine, like a great study in an old house. I love it. Went here last night with some friends. Made a reservation, which I would certainly recommend. Portions are large and we all really enjoyed our meals (filet, pork chops, prime rib and bone-in steak). Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum! My husband and I stopped in for lunch a few weekends ago while we were in town and once again my fellow Yelpers did not lead me astray. I ordered the veggie burger which was one of my favorite kinds...beans and rice and as a side I had the grilled asparagus. My husband ordered a burger. I also ordered a glass of yummy Pinot. My burger was one of the best bean and rice burgers I've had. The bun was slightly toasted which only added to the over all experience. Yum! The only downfall would be that my burger fell apart less than half way through but heck...it still tasted good. My husband's burger was actually undercooked. He said it was so undercooked it was actually kind of cold. Eep. Now back in my red meat days that would have been a treat, LOL, but my husband loves his meat medium well. I told him to ask for it to be cooked a bit longer but he was okay eating it as is. The restaurant reminded me of a cross between a Houston's, J Alexander's and Bandera's which is a restaurant in Chicago. Then to see the bartender take several minutes to meticulously properly mix the drink; impressive and delicious. To have the bartender good naturedly call the drink a "prep whore, but very tasty" then a discussion with the bartender and fellow next to me as to whether herbsaint or absinthe is the traditional choice, and what's the best rye. That's a good bar. Beautiful place, excellent service for dinner. Salmon appetizer's great, love their French dip, have never had a bad meal in many visits. read more

Bartlett's is one of those places that has the look and prices of a high end restaurant, but in the end completely fails to deliver. The $42 filet (filets, rather, as it came in two precisely cut thin pieces instead of one hand cut piece like it should have been for this price) was most likely from a frozen food truck. The lowest possible quality steak at a prime price. Devoid of seasoning and any notable flavor and completely unremarkable, this was the biggest rip-off of the entire meal. The machine formed hamburger suffers the same maladies most likely falling off the same frozen food truck. The fries came out mostly burned and the collard greens tasted like grass. Instead of spending resources producing a 2 person meal worthy of a $100+ tab, they did work on the pretentious facade by gathering the wait staff to go over some kind of wine tasting exercise. For some reason they bother with a gluten free menu which is what brought us in, but it certainly is not enough to bring us back as this was one of the worst uses of my hard earned money I have has the misfortune to try. I needed a nice meal to life my spirits but what I got instead was a disappointing rip-off and I left worse off then when I started. read more

What a welcome change from everywhere else I've eaten in Austin! I was delightfully surprised at the wonderful atmosphere, great food, and well trained, professional staff here. We were seated almost immediately, and the hostess got drinks going for us before she left from seating us! The drinks were brought a few minutes later by our waitress, then she took our order - it was the most flawless service I have seen in a while. Not once did we have to ask for anything to be refilled either. We had the club sandwich with fries, the roast beef sandwich with fries and chicken strips with fries - and everything was incredible. This is the best place to get a roast beef sandwich in Austin, by the way! The fries were shoe-string like and absolutely wonderful. The iced tea was also great. Great service, even with the inevitable wait for seating. I feel like Bartlett's (formerly Houston's) is pretty classy, and if anything, the prices will certainly promote that ideal. The food is satisfying, but nothing that really sparks a craving. The real draw is the atmosphere and the diversity of options. The best appetizer is the spinach dip with the toasty chips. For the main meal, the BF is a BBQ rib loyalist, and for a non-BBQ joint, Bartlett's plates some succulent, savory baby-back ribs. The meat is moist and the sauce is just the right level of sweet. I tend to go with the fish of the day, which costs a pretty penny, but the texture and flavor is always perfect and the portion large enough for definite leftovers. I think the major draw is the bar drinks. Bartlett's houses a gorgeous and finely polished bar with the kind of wood paneling and seats that makes you wanna ramble off some made up drink name just to see if they can figure something out. This is our favorite place in all of Austin to have a great steak. It's pretty upscale and sometimes the wait staff can be snobby but we don't let that deter us from being customers here. Management is awesome here though...for example: the last time we went there our waiter ghosted us for about 15 minutes after we had finished and I saw what looked to be the manager so I waved her over and told her what happened. She was very nice and had our waiter attend to us right away. I really wasn't bothered too badly(probably because of the killer steak I just ate) but as we were outside walking to our car the manager caught up to us and handed me a $100 gift card! Came here for a job acceptance celebration and was glad I did. For $1 you can get some ciabatta bread for the table and it's delicious! Very soft and buttery. For my entree I got the House Marinated Rib-Eye and it was hands down the best ribeye steak I've ever had. It was huge! The perfect size, so come hungry! The pineapple marinade that it was cooked in was delicious. Sweet and juicy steak. For dessert I got the Key Lime Pie and it was a perfect size to share; just the perfect amount of sweetness. I've been going to Houston's...errr...Bartlett's for as long as I can remember. I love it. My parents love it. The food and service here have always been great to us. Initially I fell in love with the Double-Cut Pork Chops and the Sashimi Tuna Salad. Wow. Amazing. My dad loves the Barbecue Pork Ribs (to the point that he pretty much never orders anything else). Of course, when I come with my folks, we ALWAYS order the Grilled Artichokes as an appetizer. The smoke flavor is to-die-for. Crazy. If you don't order it, more for me. I religiously avoid chain restaurants, but this is one I have no issues with returning to. In addition to the dishes above, I've had the Hardwood Grilled Market Salmon and the Hand-Cut Filet. I'm typically wary of ordering steak at a non-dedicated steak house, but they do an amazing job here. And I order medium-rare. The only problem I would have is that this place is so popular that the wait can be unfathomable. Deciding to come here on a Friday night at 7 pm is just asking for trouble. Really? Come at a reasonable date/time, you will be seated immediately, and you will love the experience. I don't have a single bad thing to say about the place. The ambience is nice. It's clean. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. If you ask something they don't know, they will go find out for you. I love the smoked salmon appetizer. It's crisp, bright, creamy, Smokey goodness that I would eat all by myself if I didn't have a table to share it with! I get the yellowfin tuna burger. This delight is a burger that taste like it wants to be a sushi roll when it grows up. It's fantastic. And huge. I cut it in half and take it home to finish it later. The quinoa salad it comes with is really good too. We wrapped it all up with their orange chocolate mousse. It's a pretty little thing with whipped cream, candied orange peel, a few few slices of sweet orange and creamy orange flavored dark chocolate. Perfectly balanced, not too sweet, not too bitter. And this is coming from someone who doesn't like dark chocolate! It's good! Overall you should for sure make your way here on some special night and give them a try. To die for steaks, burger & fries. Attentive waitstaff. They do need to work on ambiance in the bar however. I went for cocktails only once and there was no music to be heard in bar area, no redbull (said it was a full bar) and the bartenders were way too comfortable and lax- kinda lost the fine dining approach here. Counting money and credit card tips and talking about closing duties.... It was more than an hour till close. No Complaints! Maybe it was the fact that we'd had a terrible experience the night before at Pappadeaux in Austin, but I still think Bartlett's was top-notch. I'm from Chicago--was in Austin for Moto GP and had picked Bartlett's based on proximity and reviews to our hotel. I was not disappointed! The service was great. Joanne was our primary server and one of the things I noticed is that the wait staff and host staff seem to all pitch in, which I noticed and admired. We had the mushroom pate which was really delicious. And dinner was prime rib, which was cooked exactly the way I like it. I also appreciated that Joanne paid attention to detail. She (or someone else) kept the water glasses filled (which, in our case is something that requires vigilance as we drink a lot of water) and she remembered the details of what I asked for (lots of fresh horseradish). I know that seems like a small detail, but I appreciated that she paid attention to my request. She checked on us frequently but without being bothersome, seemed very genuine and made a great recommendation for dessert (key lime pie). It was an all-around very positive experience. I would definitely go again if I didn't live in Chicago! Next year for Moto GP - I will keep Bartlett's on the agenda for sure! read more

What a super wonderful venue for anything and everything from a quiet dinner for two to a fantastically fun party out on the deck area!!! I happened to be fortunate enough to attend the latter last Friday and it was outstanding!! The servers were completely on the ball and kept up with our crazy non-stop demands! I especially loved our one waitress that I wish with all my heart I could remember her name.. strawberry blonde that had her hair up.. very sweet... worked the back deck Friday night.. she was hilarious and had a fantastic sense of humor about the whole thing. I know she was being pulled in every direction, but she never missed a beat! :-) While I didn't end up eating anything.. (we were too busy enjoying our bottle of cab! Maybe it was the kids..maybe it was Bartlett's...maybe it was our waiter. My wife and I love this place. If it is an important date to us, we have celebrated it at Bartlett's. Kids have shown an interest in artichokes and we happened to be close around lunchtime, so why not? Waiter was rude from the get-go. He sees four kids and rolls his eyes. We order water for the kids and he rolls his eyes. He brings kids regular adult water glasses and soon after my five year old spills his! I later saw another waiter bring a kid a drink in a cup with a lid. ‍ The artichokes are great. My wife asks for a straw when artichokes arrive. She asks two more times to different Fast forward 20 minutes. Entrees and my wife's straw arrive. Waiter has rarely checked on us. He has not refilled drinks timely either. Food is great, but I need salt and pepper for my baked potato. Guess who I don't see for the first seven minutes after food is delivered? Finally flag down another waitress, who immediately brings salt and pepper. Waiter does not return until almost all food is eaten. I ask for a to go box and put my left over prime rib and potato on a clean plate to be boxed up. He boxes the prime rib only. I ask him to box the potato too...you guessed it...EYE ROLL...... Give him my credit card.............takes over five minutes to get it back (does this guy have a credit card skimmer?). Again food is great. Good price on kids chicken tenders meal ($7, for fries and three great chicken fingers), but service was a 0.0 today. Update: received a great response from management and a promise that they will provide additional training to the waiter in question. They provided a gift card even though I told them that it was not necessary. The note that accompanied the card shows what a class act Bartlett's is. My family and colleagues eat at Bartletts at least once a week. Of course their food is consistently good no matter what you order. Once I had a problem with a piece of Key Lime pie having a plastic lid off the whipping cream carton in the pie but that can happen to anyone. They made it right by giving me a complimentary gift card. However, some of their waiters are somewhat unkind and seem to be controlling. When I ordered a piece of key lime pie tonight after dinner at around 8:00 pm he indicated they "had just sold the last piece." The waiter we had tonight Harrison had seen the plastic piece I had bitten down and it just seemed weird they ran out at that key moment. I have never known Bartletts to run out of key lime pie. Of course I don't know if this was true but I had a feeling he was upset at me even mentioning the plastic cap. Just thought this should come to the attention of the manager. read more
