Love me some Bartlett's. So many of the foodie lists for Austin had this place as a must go and I see why. I've been twice now and both times the food was great. I'm a big fan of their steaks but everything is good. The menu is big enough to keep you interested without being overwhelming. I'm a big fan of good appetizers and their spinach artichoke dip was just that. The service was great, everyone was friendly and checked on me often. My friend even brought his service dog and they were more the accommodating. The ambience is perfect for a date night. Its dark inside to set the mood and honestly it may be a little too dark for some people but I enjoyed it. Dessert was pretty good too. The was a special butter rum cake or something similar the first time I went which was really good! Second time i tried the key lime pie which was solid. Overall I'd definitely recommend coming here if you haven't been. read more

My husband and I visited this spot really late on a Saturday night. I had the BBQ ribs and they were some of the best I've ever tasted. I was amazed I ate 90% of the entire rack! I forgot what my husband ate but I do remember he made a happy plate :-). I'll definitely visit again. read more

Wow. What a beautiful restaurant. Cane here for lunch with colleagues. Ordered smoked salmon plate as appetizer with capers. It was out of the world. Ordered fish of the day as entree. It was simply amazing. It came with a side of asparagus. Veggies were cooked to perfection. Coworker ordered salmon with spinach and he said it was really good as well. Service was exceptional. LOCAL EATERY. HAS LOST WHATEVER THEY ONCE HAD. We come to this restaurant every time we visit Austin. The service was so terrible yesterday. Our waiter was exceptionally COLD. The menu was missing our favorite selections however we substituted for smoked salmon which was good and our waiter never asked how it was then we ordered the shark fish sandwich which was good as an entree and asked could they cut it in half to which they emphatically denied doing so because OF the PRESENTATION. REALLY My husband ordered a milk shake and I had an ice cream sundae. A lot of chocolate a few morsels of nuts and a little whipped cream. My guest arrived later ordered lobster and garlic potatoes. Lobster was so small it could fit in her hand. Potatoes were cold and she pointed that out to which they bought out another serving....cold. Waiter never came back or refilled our water. Why spend money with them when there are a number of restaurants in Austin that respect and appreciate guest dining with them DONT waste your time with this local eatery. read more

Probably a 2 1/2 star, but as per my unofficial rule, expensive restaurants get rounded down due to higher expectations and more affordable restaurants get rounded up due to exceeding expectations. And Bartlett's failed to live up to its standards tonight. The biggest let down tonight was our service at a booth in the bar. "Mike V." took care of us. While he was almost obsequiously pleasant when he was at our table, there were several slip ups. First, he inadvertently placed an order for an appetizer which we didn't order. Second, he described three specials of the evening, none of which he provided a price for. One of the specials was a grilled salmon served with beets with a cream sauce. Mom noticed the grilled salmon was listed on the menu with wilted spinach. When we asked what the difference was between the special and the salmon on the menu, Mike V. said there wasn't any difference, only that he liked the beets better and wanted to recommend it. Odd, to say the least. Sadly, this wasn't the only flub tonight at Bartlett's. Mom stated that her salmon was almost devoid of any seasoning, not even salt and pepper. She left over half of her salmon and spinach. When another server came by to clear our plates and box up her leftovers, there was no notice of that nor any inquiry as to whether the dish was prepared to her liking. Then again, the service was not the usual level of attentiveness from Bartlett's. Glasses went unfilled and there were long periods without seeing our server or any other server. My ribeye was good, although there was a long ribbon of fat along the side of the steak that could've been trimmed prior to serving at least. The baked potato was very good, though. Was dinner horrible? Far from it. But at the price point we were at, approaching fine dining, one expects a pursuit of perfection approaching such perfection. ($120 for dinner for three, with no alcohol, appetizers, or dessert.) Sadly, we were let down tonight. read more

Why have I not yet reviewed this place? I first came to Bartlett's when it was Houston's, more than a decade ago. I had a boyfriend whose parents loved coming here. After his father died, and his mom was finally in the mood to try to get out of the house again, we again took her to Houston's for gin n tonics and shrimp cocktail at the bar. Always good, always classy, always just right. In recent years, this has been our go-to date night place, whether we planned to go out on Saturday night, or we suddenly find ourselves with an impromptu babysitter on a Tuesday. You know why? It's consistent. The servers are professional, the drinks are always good, the food is outstanding, and the atmosphere is classy and understated - no pretense. Yes, it's kind of pricy, but it's worth it, and the servers are worth a 20% gratuity on the bill. (I can't say the same for a lot of trendy places in town with clueless waitstaff.) We were there on a recent Saturday night, and it was actually pretty crowded. I really enjoyed that the design of the dining room allows for you to hear your companions over all the other conversations in the restaurant, and the glass partition by the kitchen keeps noise at a minimum. This is an update of my previous review and I am very pleased to say that last night Bartlett's delivered! The vodka martini was perfect with little crystals, and just the right amount of olive juice. The spinach artichoke dip was devoured quickly by my companion. I blinked and it was gone! So delicious. We ordered my two fav's the marinated rib eye, and ribs with baked potatoes. The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and it still remains my favorite steak after twenty plus years. The ribs came out hot, temperature wise, and were well seasoned. The meat fell off the bones. Now baked potatoes are supposed to be just baked potatoes, but after my companion finished his, he dove into mine. The service was outstanding, as I have grown accustomed to receiving. I am so very happy that my favorite restaurant is still the best and that I can confidently recommend it once again, without worry. Love this place! read more

We absolutely loved the ambience, the dim lights, dark wood, dark leather booths, don't worry there are tables around the outer perimeters on the windows that have natural light for those of you that don't like romance. I am proud to say that my conflicted relationship with Bartlett's has taken a positive turn over the last year. When I order medium rare it's been medium rare. The staff has always been attentive to our needs. That was one of the main reasons I didn't stop coming here. The bar service and drinks have always been consistently impeccable. We've been going to Bartlett's and Houston's for more than 20 years. It was always our go to restaurant for a quality meal with great service. Unfortunately, our last experience wasn't great. Our son ordered a Dos Equis dressed and the waiter poured the beer too fast so it hit the salt on the rim causing it to overflow and he set it down and just walked away. Next, one person in our party ordered a burger without any veggies and it arrived with cabbage on the bottom bun. When we questioned the waiter he said all burgers come with cabbage to help soak up the grease. He didn't apologize but asked if we wanted a new bun. The waiter was snarky in his responses. Bartlett's is basically Houston's rebranded with an Austin owner. Bartlett's used to be Houston's but then the chain broke locations off. This one is a staple and has many regulars. This is a pro and a con. The pro is that it feels like a country club without the fee. People get to know you and take excellent care of you. Generally the kitchen is quality and consistent. The con is that sometimes certain regulars get a bit trashed and this can be annoying and worrisome as you see them hop in their car. The bartenders should remember their TABC training and the law and be more careful about this as it's a huge liability. In the last 3-6 months, the kitchen has been inconsistent. We go weekly and the last 3 times the food has taken 40-50 minutes or the dish was made incorrectly and we sent it back and had to wait 30 minutes for them to fix the simple error. Another example is that we were there several weeks ago where we ordered smoked salmon and it took 30-45 minutes for this to come out. I thought this was an oversight but I noticed other people checking on orders as similarly simple appetizers were very delayed. Bartlett's reached out to me after this review and offered an apology and addressed that they are working on the issue and the owner was notified. I know every restaurant goes through growing pains. read more

Went here for the first time on my birthday! Entrees are pricey, but delicious --- I got the mushroom swiss burger with fries and LOVED it. Warning, this is a huge burger, so come hungry. My friend and I ordered cocktails as well (Rickshaw and Pimm's Cup) which were also tasty. Our server was exceptionally hospitable and came to check on us a couple times during our meal. The only downside of my experience was that I was offered a free dessert for my birthday, but ended up getting charged for it. -__- (I didn't realize until I got home and looked more closely at the receipt) Overall, a great experience. I had not been to Bartlett's since it was Houston's. Same wonderful menu, service and bar. We scored a fantastic server who offered food and drink ideas. He told us it was still happy hour so we could hurry and order drinks. (I really think he wanted us to be happy and was not completely focused on a tip. Or he is a great actor who moonlights as a waiter.) The gluten free menu has lots to chose from so if you are inclined in that direction, ask for one. I ordered the Roasted Chicken with Apricot Glaze that came with a yummy quinoa. Yes, I swear that quinoa can be yummy! Hubs and Son both chose steaks and potato sides. Servings are generous and everything was tasty. Son thought Bartlett's had a bit of class going on and I agree. It's a chain but it's a classy chain. The lighting is dim enough to feel like you are alone with your beloved but you can also see your food. read more

I normally eat at this restaurant due to my nostalgia however it has made my list of places to not eat. As I was eating a veggie burger I encountered three strips of white fiber in the burger. I showed the waiter the fiber strips ,he was very apologetic and he paid for both meals and included a certificate to purchase another veggie burger of which I will not do. The Manager came over and apologized as well. The first offense I encountered was a waiter with poor hygiene and now my veggie burger having fiber strips in it. read more

This is kind of like the fancier all American grill. Nothing that stands out in a fancy unique concept. So I would say this is the safe place to take your friends/relatives that are afraid of your unique palate. The winner here is the French Dip Sandwich. Between this and getting the prime rib, this is the winner. The prime rib can still have some fatty or chewy pieces, but the French Dip is perfectly tender. Staff can be a little slow to pick up on the pacing of the meal, but they were good at keeping up with the drinks of my pregnant wife. Keep the wifey happy and you win! read more

We had dinner here on father's day 2019 around 8:30 pm. This place gets steak right. It now tops my list of steak eateries. The drinks were on point. We had a margarita and a Long Island tea. Sides were awesome. My hubby and I had the pineapple steak and our son had the two chop plate. I can't say enough about the food. The service was amazing as well. Dimly lit romantic lighting. Kinda noisy. Clean facility. We didn't have room for dessert so next time we will have to give that a try as well. We will be going back there soon and often. I definitely recommend it! read more

On top of that, they seated myself and my toddler son in our scruffy winter wear for an early supper without blinking. I have become a weekly "regular" at Bartlett's over the past few years due to its excellent and consistent food and friendly service. The menu is always a crowd pleaser, that I would characterize as American fine dining comfort food. They took the basics from the prior Houston's menu up a couple of levels years ago and continue to impress with perfectly cooked meals, literally every time I visit. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but favorites are the artichokes and spinach and artichoke dip, club salad, ahi salad, French dip sandwich, prime rib, and of course the steaks and salmon. Their on premises aged Barrel Aged Manhattan is an excellent cocktail. The only criticism I have for management is they should offer a Happy Hour discount of some sort for some items and a few more specials each week. The servers and bartenders are all the best and greet you with a smile. Don't tell your friends how good it is as I still want to be able to get a seat at the bar or table. See you there. read more

I am writing this review during the time where people are losing their minds over COVID-19. This is one of the few places to eat that I can trust to be the cleanest in Austin. First, all tables are scrubbed with a samitizer. The menus are as well. Napkins are boiled. The HVAC system has top notch filtration. A sign tells people to wash their hands before eating. The kitchen is very clean. The food? Top notch. Anything on the menu is good, and their salads are incredible. The desserts are top notch. If one orders fish, the chef sauce is incredible. Very very upset with my first and now LAST experience here. We came on a Sunday night and they someone "ran out of french fries" and didn't share this with us until our food came with no sides present. The waitress asked if we wanted to order anything else in place of the fries, but of course it would take an additional 5-10 minutes. On top of the huge disappointment, we are each charged for it. Who says babysitting your best friends baby doesn't have it's perks? I guess my new slogan should be "will babysit for amazing dinners" This is perhaps my new favorite steak spot. Tucked away in a strip mall, I would have never found this place. Starting with the grilled artichokes. Smokey, delicious leaves that leave you wanting more until you reach the center of the heart. Only to realize it was worth the work it took to get the center. I had the crab cake and the filet, with a side of sauteed spinach. The crab cake was incredibly delicious, sweet, fresh and I detected very little filler, if any. I didn't touch much of the sauteed spinach due to personal preference. I hate wilty spinach unless it's smothered with cheese and I can use a chip as my dipping vessel. BUT in all fairness for those who like sauteed spinach it was done properly. The filet was cooked medium rare, the way I asked. Tender, with the right amount of seasoning. I was happy. We finished with 2 desserts. Key Lime Pie which was actually tart tasting and not overly sugary. The graham crust was a great compliment. The chocolate orange pot de creme was also good but the portion was laughable. Served in a mug filled 1/4 up with chocolate then a huge dollop of whipped cream that filled the rest of the cup up. Definitely left us wanting more.
