I came here the first day I arrived in Austin after driving for several hours from California. I always hear good things about the barbecue and meats from Texas, and am not disappointed after eating here. The place looks nice and has a classy ambience to it, the lighting is pretty dim, and the staff is friendly from start to finish. I ordered the pineapple marinated rib-eye medium rare and it was amazing. I ate the whole thing without additional sauces. The meal was cooked properly and garnished to look aesthetically pleasing. A must try dish to anyone who comes here. The food here is kind of pricey(high 20's), but it was expected based on what I saw on Yelp. I had lunch at Bartlett's and it was very good. My burger was prepared just right. The fries were great. I wouldn't call anything I ordered extraordinary, but it was all good. Service was friendly and our waters we're kept near full. The manager came out to make sure everything was good, which is nice. The prices are a little steep but they're not terrible. I do have one complaint / recommendation for management: different faucets in the bathroom pleeease. The faucets with the automatic sensors are great when they work, but these ones do not. They turn on for about two seconds and then turn off. I probably looked pretty ridiculous putting my hand under, pulling it out, putting it back under, again and again trying to get to soap off. This is a first class operation. Food is always great, consistent and the service is so good I doubt there are many restaurants anywhere that could be better. Every time I go, I'm seated sooner then the hostess estimates, a wait person is at my table within 1 minute, literally in less than 60-90 seconds someone is there to introduce him/herself and take our drink order. Their management is a model for others to take note of. This is how restaurant should be run. I've never had anything here that wasn't really good. My favorites are the roasted artichokes and the chicken salad. If you don't drink you can probably get a great meal for $30-40. This is a well run restaurant, with delicious steaks, and the chicken breast is moist, and yum also. I had the 5 oz filet mignon, which is the perfect size for me. They know how to cook a medium steak! Some overcook it, and just don't get it. Bartlett's brings (every time) nice pink, perfectly slightly red, and just the way I love it. My friend had the Rib-eye with pineapple/ginger marinade. He loved it, ate every bit. The bake potatoes were perfect, and the key lime pie with light, and so yum. My friends and I went for Austin Restaurant Week and the meal was excellent!! Their peel and eat shrimp appetizers were simple, but delicious. I also appreciated the hot towels they brought out afterwards, nice touch :) My filet mignon entree was cooked to perfection, tender and "melts in your mouth". Bartlett's is basically a superior version of Roaring Fork. Their burger is easily one of the best I've eaten, anywhere. Take this from an accredited hamburgler -- this place doesn't F around. Order it medium rare with cheddar, bacon, grilled onion, and mustard. I've only had a few items from the rest of the menu and they were all well-executed. I wish I could give 4.5 stars!!! I am unapologetically stingy with my 5 star reviews which are reserved solely for those places that really blow my metaphorical skirt up... Yeah, yeah. I know, it's a chain but hey, what can ya do? This place knows good food and great service. The waitstaff is extremely knowledgeable about everything that is poured or plated in their restaurant. They seem to be hyper-aware of the needs of their diners, yet discretely so. Seriously, those guys are like refill ninjas! There are always much more appealing and delicious sounding options, but after reading the description of the sashimi tuna salad I could not resist. And the spinach artichoke dip was savory and definitely did not skimp on the chokes the size of my fist. Okay maybe I exaggerate slightly, but only slightly. The ambiance was nice with good lighting. I felt a little cheated when I gazed out their beautifully curtained windows to see a jack-in-the-box, gas station, and the hustle of North Burnet. But they obviously don't need the hip downtown location to boost their biz. The place was packed well into the lunch hour. I enjoy the prime rib here. If you were on the Flintstones and were eating in your car... consider yourself flipped over! This thing is massive and is bound to fill the tummy of most fat kids. The staff is always professional and very friendly. Its a good place to go on a nice date without killing the wallet. Some of the negative things are one they don't have ciders. But you know they are not known for they're bar but for their food. Their staff outfits are a bit weird with the belts, button down white shirts and jeans. Its can also be extremely dark to the point you pull out your phone and use it for light. The 4 star rating on here is a little perplexing. First and foremost let me say, I came here for dinner during Austin restaurant week on a Sunday night. I don't feel like this should give them an "out" as ARW should be your time to shine for new customers (like me)! When we first walked in there was a greeter who was very mumbly. It took us a few trys to understand that she was telling us to walk up to the host to be seated. Well, duh. When we reached the host, he had left to show some people to their table so the greeter ended up seating us anyway. An awkward start to the meal. The restaurant itself is very dark. Dark walls, dark floors, lots of wood everywhere and very dim lighting. But it's not like a cool ambiance dark like The Ginger Man or Gourdough's Public House. It's more of a -you might trip and fall at any moment because parts of the restaurant are literally pitch black- kind of dark. But the dining tables themselves have a nice soft spotlight on them and a candle. Our waitress seemed like this was her first day on the job, and other waiters who stopped by to service our table didn't deliver the kind of high end service you'd expect from a place with such an upscale feel, menu and price point. For example, at one point one of our appetizers (which we were all sharing tapas style) was still half full and she picked it up to take it away without asking. I quickly let her know we were still working on it and she put it down, apologized and walked away. It took about 15 minutes for our bottle of wine to arrive, half way through our appetizers. At one point, a waitress reached straight across and in front of my dining partner to fill his water glass... she could have easily walked around to this other side. When she brought new silverware for our entrees, she forgot to take the dirty silverware for friend. As we were finishing our appetizers she came to let us know that our entrees would be ready soon and asked if she could clear the table. We said sure. About 30 seconds later someone who wasn't dressed as a waiter came buy to apologize and let us know that our entrees would be 3 more minutes. Was that necessary? 3 minutes isn't that long. Would we have noticed the delay if you hadn't pointed it out? It was weird. When she was clearing the entrees, my friend asked for a to go box. Instead of clearing all of our entrees and bringing back the leftovers in a to go box for her, the waitress only cleared the two entree plates that were finished and left the half full entree plate on the table. We figured she would come back with a to go box but instead came back with all of our desserts... causing some awkward table congestion and maneuvering. It's just not the kind of flow you expect from a higher end waitress. As for the food, there are so many other places in this city that surpass it. The ARW menu was set at $27 which seemed a little low looking at the prices on their regular menu. I wonder why they didn't go for the $37 price point. Either way, our appetizers came. We ordered one of each to try all three. The pate was good although the raspberry horseradish jam that came with it was not good and a really weird pairing. The roasted vegetables were mediocre. It's not that hard to marinate some red peppers and artichoke hearts so it's not like I was expecting that to blow me out of the water. The ceviche was... weird. Not nearly enough acidity (lemon or lime juice) and irregular and overly large chunks of fish/scallops, jalapeno and cucumber. It was served with tortilla chips which, if the ceviche was in small uniform pieces like it should have been would have been a perfect vessel for eating but instead your tortilla chip could only hold one awkwardly large piece of cucumber... None of us were impressed. We moved onto the entrees. One of us ordered the rabbit meatballs with gnocchi and the other two the shrimp and blue corn grits. My friend said his rabbit meatballs were excellent and totally made up for the appetizers. (Except for the bread which, when he asked our third diner to taste it and tell him what that flavor was she responded "pool water") The shrimp and grits were pretty good. Grits had a really nice flavor, great consistency and was nicely seasoned. The shrimp were ok, nothing amazing. It came with two little pieces of fried okra on the side whose breading tasted funky. At this point, the entrees had kind of redeemed the appetizers but the service was so terrible that we were not impressed. For dessert, I ordered the strawberry shortcake and my two friends both ordered chocolate pots de creme. Well, they ran out of the pots de creme and so we all ordered the strawberry shortcake. We were given a $10 gift card for our troubles which we swiftly put towards this meal, none of us planning on returning... The strawberry shortcake was delicious. I love Bartlett's/Houston's. Although I bitch about the prices, I am REALLY glad they finally found the elastic limit for pricing. I can get in there after 11:15 a.m. for lunch! I have been coming here for years. Best French Dip in town or the Honey Lime Chicken Salad? Decisions Decisions. Chili Cheese fries on Saturdays are a given, though. Crispy shoestrings of angels. I like the dark, cool, calming atmosphere and the unique wait system they use that is hyper efficient and never in your face. I have never waited for the check, either, a particular pet peeve. I went there on a Sunday night with some friends. We ordered the Spinach dip and the salmon to start with. Both were great and a good size for four people to share. Then I ordered the Applewood Smoked Port Chops. OMG. Best pork chop of my life. The portion was quite large as well. I ate the other half for lunch today. My friend and I had two different cocktails that were great as well. The first was a pear martini and the second was the La Rosette which was really good! When I want reliably good food and reliably attentive service I head to Bartlett's. It's a little pricier than my average go-to spots, but sometimes it's just worth it. I love the asian steak salad and ANYTHING off their oak fired grill is good....particularly fish. Desserts are thoughtful and big enough to share. I went in one night with my heart set on a favorite dish...which they were out of. Merely in passing I mentioned my disappointment to my server. Within a few minutes the manager stopped by to apologize... and gave me a card to enjoy that entree for free on my next visit. WOW! What a nice way to ensure a return visit. When I need a meat fix this is the place. I wish there were a wider selection of sides but I go here for the steak, the pork chop, the burger and occasionally the fish - the halibut is particularly good. I'm rating this on my overall experience and not based on the incident that I assume was just a very, very rare occurrence. I made a reservation for 2 on a Monday night, which wasn't even necessary because it was never fully seated. The place has an overall nice vibe. It's dark but just lit enough. I guess our server was a bit busy but we got helped by probably 2 other people before he stopped by. My girlfriend got wine and the surf & turf and I got the french dip. Her dish wasn't on the menu but she saw it on Yelp and asked about a crab cake & steak plate and the server knew exactly what it was. Everything was delicious and was portioned to fill you up without taking home leftovers. The prices weren't terrible either. I hate to be the type of customer to complain about the food, even if I'm paying a premium price for it. I know I have the right to say something, but I just feel bad so I usually don't. In this case, I definitely had the right to tell them about the hair in my sandwich... but I didn't. I know, it's kind of gross, but I was so hungry and it honestly didn't bother me that much because it was just on top of the bread. I picked it off and discarded the thought from my mind. This was before I even took my first bite. It wasn't until my very last bite that I found the second hair. At this point, I knew I couldn't let it go, but I felt like it was so convenient to make a complaint on the last bite, as if I was doing it for a free meal. It didn't matter though, because this hair was stretched through the final portion of the sandwich and embedded in a way that I could not ignore and could not have staged. I waived the server over and told him about how I ignored the first hair but couldn't let the second one go. He was very apologetic and offered me a new one but i said it was fine since I was basically done anyway. I asked for new fries though since the hair was now touching the ones on my plate. They made a fresh batch and brought it out. A manager came over and addressed the issue and apologized. He gave me his business card where he wrote that I had credit for a free french dip on my next visit. They also took my other one off my bill. This was all handled very professionally and I'm sure it's not a common occurrence. My dad always complains that it's too loud and the wait staff tries to rush you.. but at least they dont leave you waiting! And i'm sure if you asked them to give you some time and slow it down they would do so happily... i'm not capable to win the race of finishing my drink before they can refill it and they are very attentive.. i recommend the spinach dip and the ribs. Consistently the best restaurant in Austin. I've been going to Bartletts for years. It may have been called Houston's, but anyone familiar with this place know the only thing that's changed is the name. Same great food, same exceptionally good service. I don't understand why more restaurants don't have their servers pool tips. These guys do and it ensures everyone is watching each others back. You never have an empty glass or plates that need to be cleared. I am a huge fan of a good french dip sandwich. From where I'm sitting, I think it's safe to say you will NEVER find a better french dip sandwich than the one at Bartletts. Maybe there's one that's as good somewhere, but I don't see how a better french dip could possibly exist. The bread is homemade, super-fresh and butter-grilled before they add mayonnaise (optional). They use the same prime rib you can order as a meal, and it's sliced very thin. You can also order it rare, which is how a french dip should be served IMO. Top that off with the most flavorful au just you'll ever encounter and the best hot, thin shoestring fries around. This sandwich is just HEAVEN for me! Now....their burgers? They might be the best in town. Only thing that is a little sad these days is related to beef's soaring prices. The french dip is now $20, which is a pretty high price for a sandwich. Their steaks are also in the mid $30s range. Skyrocketing beef prices are the result of our continued drought. Just because I understand why there are higher beef prices doesn't mean I have to like them, do I? It's been a long while since we've eaten at Bartlett's. I think the last time we did, it had a different name. However, I had read a great review in the Chronicle and thought we should check it out since they have started offering a special cocktail menu. From the minute we entered the restaurant, everyone was smiling and friendly. The place ran like a well-oiled machine. We were led over the hostess area by a woman keeping an eye on the front door and immediately we were whisked away to our table in the back of the restaurant. It was actually really nice as it overlooked the whole place. I ordered the Brown Bowler to start off with and the husband got the Dark and Stormier. Both were really delicious drinks but I liked mine a bit better. Something about the grapefruit, honey, rosemary and bourbon just tasted like they all belonged together. My only complaint would be that the rosemary bits in the drink made it hard to finish without getting a mouthful of rosemary, which would not be a good thing. I had to try the French Dip as it is one of my favorite sandwiches. We also split a caesar salad, which was not only surprisingly inexpensive, but really great. My husband ordered a burger and fries. The French Dip was truly the best I've had outside of New Orleans. I am so excited to have found a quality version as it can be depressing to love a sandwich you never find on a menu. The meat is piled high and pink in the middle and the bread is just flat out a revelation. Crispy on the outside and soft inside it elevated the sammie to something special. I'm glad I could only eat half of it as knowing I got a second meal out of the dish made the $18 price more bearable. While not his favorite in Austin, my husband felt the burger was solid and one of the better versions on town. We both loved the skinny little french fries too. Because we had to try a dessert after the review, we split a slice of key lime pie. It was rich and wonderful, the whipped cream not overly sweet and the tart filling key limey. The crust had a touch of cinnamon in it, which I loved as I think a little cinnamon can improve most things even savory dishes. Our waitress was phenomenal. I think her name was Maria. She was welcoming, knowledgeable, and on her game. Our food came out on time and exactly as we wanted it, and she knew to leave us alone when we were chowing down. She even noticed I was done with my sandwich and brought a to-go box with a little cup of jus and horseradish sauce to put the other half of my sandwich in. It's kind of funny writing a review for a restaurant I've gone to since 9th grade, but here we go. First off, totally true what folks have said about not judging a book by its cover. The outside looks like a different take on Applefridayhan's.... the inside is much more tasteful. Low wood beams, nice (though very dark) lighting - it's moody, comfortable, and bustling. As I alluded to, this place has been kickin' for quite some time. And although I think the space (both inside and out) is perfectly nice, it's starting to show its age. Some of the newer Houstons are actually pretty great from a design-perspective - I wish they'd do the same to our fine Austin location. But the important part - the FOOD. It's great. Slightly on the pricey side, but really, the quality and taste are excellent. And yes, it's by far the best veggie burger I've had in my life. Key lime pie is a winner as well. Service is usually great, although they do have a tendency to bring the check as you're still mid-dessert and say "no rush." It's a little quirky, but not a big deal in the scheme of things. So the bottom line: Houstons is a great experience that isn't flawless, but is certainly delicious. read more

My sister got a side of sweet potatoes which looked and tasted bad. I would say my favorite thing i ate though were the fries. This place does fries justice. Our party didn't want to deal with the line at Hopdoddy's last night and got into Bartlett's without a wait. Excellent choice, much better burgers. Great atmosphere, service, and food. The hamburger with horse radish sauce and fries are amazing. Yes, $16 is steep for a burger and fries, but it is incomparable in quality to most other burgers. Everyone else was very happy with their food choices. The ambiance is spot on. I have been back with a group twice since the burger review. This is just one of the most enjoyable restaurants in Austin. Everyone enjoyed their meals. We went in January for my son's birthday. This was a hard to impress group. They liked it so well they suggested it for Mother's Day. I had the apricot glazed roasted chicken and quinoa. The. Chicken was juicy, plump and flavorful. I wish I had the recipe for the quinoa salad, everyone loved it. My boys are stuck on the burgers French dip sandwich, they order one of each and share because they can't choose! read more

This was my first trip to Bartlett's since they dropped the Houston's name. The restaurant looked the same, felt the same and quite frankly I wouldn't have know that it had changed if not for the sign outside. The menu seems to be almost exactly the same. The service was prompt and the food was tasty, albeit a little overpriced. A solid experience. The only thing that bugs me is the 'fresh' ice tea every time my glass is half full. This means I always have two glasses of tea in front of me. I get the fact that they are proud of serving fresh food but this seems excessive to me and it's annoying. Minor complaint.... read more

One of my favorite restaurants around the 360/183 area. I've been coming here since the late 90's (gosh I'm old) when I had an ill fated Valentines Date at what was then called Houston's. Glad I dumped that guy, but kept this place on my speed dial. I love everything here especially the veggie burger, and the now off menu Evil Thai Jungle Salad. The Brussels sprouts are tasty, but have anchovy butter, so not good for my vegetarian friends. They have quite a few wines and I've never been disappointed by a suggestion. Other than that whack Valentines Day, I've celebrated my Birthday, taken my mom, taken my brother, my current (and final) boyfriend and even my boss. Nice enough for any dates you may have, but yet casual enough that you don't have to go home first to change. Oh yeah, I've even lusted after this place a few times after business trips and I call a few minutes after my plane lands and stop by on my way home from the ABIA. Not an overly aggressive menu, which is nice when you want to focus on a few things well, but I was not impressed with the House marinated Rib-Eye. The marinade itself was not impressive, pineapple sesame and ginger. The blend did not work for me. Too bad I had to spend $38 to figure that out. The Grilled Chicken Salad was passable, but for the price I'd expect more meat. The desserts were good, the Warm Nutty Brownie sure lived up to the name and I understand from my partner that the Keylime pie was up to standards. Abysmally poor curbside service. I get that it's Father's Day and things are busier than usual. I get that there's a pandemic and things are busier than usual. BUT if you're running 20 minutes behind with promised food, you have my phone number, you have my email address...you even have me sitting in my car waiting. Why not bother providing an update?
