Disappointed with this location! Walked around after having dinner and found ourselves walking into this BR. A couple was sitting down, two other gentlemen waiting at the end of the counter and us. No one greeted nor acknowledged us as we entered. The staff person behind the counter I thought was servicing the two gentlemen but after a few minutes more, she finally asked them what they wanted. I guess she was so engrossed in what she was doing that she didn't notice or see everyone walking by. We finally got served and I have to say, not in a very cheerful manner. "what do you want?...on what kind of cone?" My friend and I looked at each other and were surprised at the behavior we were greeted with. I looked into the freezer to see what I wanted and I saw icicles in the ice cream drums and the freezer was full of ice. You could actually see the melt/refreeze appearance on some of the flavors. I ordered my usual Jamoca Almond Fudge on a regular cone. Got this really funky scoop and the employee proceeded to shape it by using the scoop dipped in their scoop bucket . To make a long story short, after my second taste of the ice cream, it nearly fell off the cone. Definitely would not withstand the cone test! I'll go to my neighborhood parlor instead. If BR corp is reading...you'll need to revamp this location and retrain the staff. I even took photos as I was that disappointed! read more

eensy beensy place, incredibly narrow and for those of us with big hips, it makes it difficult to navigate in. The lighting is kind of crappy because it always looks dingy and dark to me in here. The fancy cones (with chocolate and sprinkles and such) that they have displayed are ancient looking and I would never order one. Staff has always been nice and friendly though, even when you're torn between one or three flavors. Ever since the "Love Potion 31" flavor came out, it's all I get. This review is for their ice cream cakes. I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE Baskin Robbins ice cream cakes. However, I came here two times in the past month - once to get a cake for my aunt's bday and once to get a cake for my brother's bday, and both times the cake was a little disappointing. The ice cream portion isn't bad, but the cake is just way too dry. I think I'm going to aim for trying out the ice cream cakes at Safeway next. Maybe less people buy ice cream cakes during the winter, so the cakes don't get rotated out as often and the cakes I got were older/not as fresh? Great place to visit after a hearty meal or a movie in downtown San Mateo. It's your typical Baskin Robbins with an excellent offering of ice cream flavors. They have your classics such as Rocky Road as well as the bright bubblegum colored flavors for the more adventurous. Ice cream cakes are also sold at this location. The seating area consists of a row of two-seater tables lined up against the wall. So, if you go in with a big group, be prepared to stand or break up the group a bit. The area around the ice cream counter where you shop around for your flavour(s) of choice is somewhat narrow. Overall, claustrophobics beware. I think this is the only ice cream place in San Mateo and it's got 31 flavors! read more

The owner, Bob Singh, helped save my daughter's birthday today. I had ordered a cake online and got a confirmation to pick it up at 11am today. However, when my sister went to pick it up, they had no record of my order. Bob stepped in and offered us the same cake but larger at no additional cost. He also upgraded the candles I had ordered as well. Crisis averted! Glad to see there are still places that provide customer service like it should be. I wouldn't give any stars, if that were an option. Nearly 2 weeks ago I ordered a birthday cake for my hubby online. I received confirmation for the date I wanted to pick it up (ordered Weds eve with pick up Fri late afternoon). When I went in at the scheduled pick up time, I was told that the cake wasn't ready. The owner finally came out and said that they hadn't received my order. I showed him the confirmation twice. He went to the back and came out a few mins later stating that he didn't have the cake I had ordered. He didn't offer an apology or a replacement. He just kept saying, "I don't have your order." I told him that that's not my problem. I have confirmation and they need to fix it. Finally, he asked if I wanted a replacement. I told him only if it's FREE because it's not my fault they messed up. He said, "Yes, of course, pick out one for the same price and I won't charge you for it." I asked, are you still going to charge me for the one I originally ordered? He said, "No, this is FREE of charge." I reiterated to make sure we were both clear and there wasn't a misunderstanding on either of our part. He repeated that it was FREE, there would be no charge for either cake because it was his mistake. Within an hour of being home, a charge showed up on my credit card. I called him immediately and questioned him on this matter and that he's a liar and can't be trusted. He said that it was his fault and that he would get it cleared up within 3-4 days. 11 days later and the charges haven't been refunded. My husband has filed a complaint with our cc company to dispute the charges. We will NEVER order or visit this Baskin Robbins again!!! The owner is not an honorable person. I've been a regular customer for about three years. I originally gave this place a two stars for lack of good customer service. It's actually gotten worse. Today (9/24/2011) I had a server give me a cup overspilling with soft serve, and didn't seem to understand why this was a problem (or the need for napkins to clean his and my hands!) This is a review Specifically for the male employee who was working yesterday June 22 at around 7pm. My wifes bday was this month. Baskin Robbins offers a free scoop during your bday month. She brought in the coupon and the guy gave her a hard time. He insisted it was only for a small kids scoop. She said ok, and asked to pay for an additional 2 large scoops on top of the small free one. He said no. The main problem was his Attitude. He acted annoyed, rude, and that he was doing her a Favor. I was going to have a bday party for my kid and 30 friends and order Gallons and Gallons of Ice cream to go, but not anymore. Message to Owner: talk to this Employeed. I went to your store tonight and was treated very rudely. I am allergic to milk and asked a girl at the counter if your company planned to get more dairy free options when a male employee interjected and said, "this is an ice cream shop, if you want sherbert go to a sherbert store," I told the man that sherbert has milk also and he seemed so exasperated with me. I was not trying to be difficult I simply inquired because I have an allergy. I just feel he could have been more courteous and simply said, "no we do not", but to tell me to leave and find a sherbert place, I felt really insulted. Maybe Baskin Robbins has no plans to change their menu, but at either rate treating someone with a food allergy as though they are picky is very hurtful. I did not want this, it just happened to me. I hope someone tells this employee how to better talk with customers. As I have been reading through other Yelp reviews I notice that employee customer service seems to be a downfall of this location. I also notice that a certain male employee was rude, I'll bet it was the same man who was rude to me who boasted to his coworker that he had been there for 7 years and they had never changed any of the flavors in all his time there. If a worker like this can last for 7 years being snotty to people then I do not have much faith in the management staff at this location. I've been to a lot of Baskin Robbins in my lifetime, and this is by far the worst one. First of all the service was terrible. I walked into the store and was welcomed by a glare from the girl working there, and a scrawny kid in a do-rag (!) was just standing by the doorway staring down at his phone the whole time, and didn't even bother to take our order. Once he finally acknowledged us after he was done with whatever he was doing on his phone, I told him my order: a hand pack pint of Daiquiri Ice and Rock n Pop Swirl. He got the scooper and TRIED to scoop, but couldn't even properly scoop ice cream into a pint! He was so weak that the ice cream was working him. lol. After pathetically managing to scoop the first half of the pint in, I was disgusted when he started to talk to his co-worker, pint in hand and right under his chin. I don't mind him talking while working, but did he really have to bring up the ice cream up to his face like a microphone? All I could think about at that point was the spit he could have sprayed onto the ice cream. After he was done scooping all the ice cream in, the pint was messy and had ice cream all over it because he did such a terrible job scooping. It looked very unappetizing and unappealing. It looked so bad that I almost didn't want to eat it. In conclusion, I just hope my ice cream has no spit in it, and the customer service desperately needs work. I would urge management to have these two employees, especially the one with the do-rag, trained immediately on customer service and how to properly scoop ice cream. By the way, are Baskin Robbins employees even allowed to wear do-rags under their caps? That was a first for me, not to mention it had ice cream stains on the bottom from all the times it probably fell into the tubs of ice cream every time he ducked his head in the dipping cabinets to scoop. When I think of ice cream shops, I think of friendly workers who are especially nice to kids. I saw a kid with his parents open the fridge to pick out an ice cream and this old man started freaking out. The family appeared well dressed, behaved. Kid just happened to open the fridge a long time so he can choose his ice cream . And this old man from the counter (probably the owner) started telling the kid in front of th earents to close the fridge in a highly irritated fashion -- as if the kid was destroying his freezer or something. YEs, they do make you uncomfortable here. There are other places to visit. read more

Came here the other day for dollar scoop days and the guy that helped us served us double kids size scoops instead of the regular scoops. On top of that he charged me $2 for rainbow sprinkles. Really, it costs that much for sprinkles? I ended up paying $8 for 3 double kid size scoops and rainbow sprinkles instead of $6+ that I had spent the day before at the Baskin Robbins in San Bruno. One more thing...the ice cream was soft and melted all over the place and we ended up throwing my daughter's double scoop in the trash. Not planning on ever coming back here again. read more
