Got delivery from Basso and it was an absolutely heavenly experience. The food was delightful, and I'd 100% go back in person for the real deal. Here's what I tried: -Hot Honey & Pepperoni Pizza: 9/10 - Oh my goodness the crispy crust on this pizza paired with the toasted mini pepperoni and wonderfully flavorful sauce was delightful. There was just the right amount of cheese, and while it would've been better fresh from the oven, it was still a well executed simple and refined pie. -Ricotta Gnocchi: 8/10 - Super rich. The beef cheek and ricotta sauce brought really creamy and savory flavor, but this is definitely a comfort food. The gnocchi itself almost disintegrated as you ate it instead of being chewy, which isn't my preference, but I think it's because it's more freshly made. Topping with crispy onions was a clever way to add texture as well. -Papardelle: 10/10 - We had no idea what to expect with this dish, and I was personally blown AWAY. The lamb was delectable, but what I really loved were the noodles and the flavor of the sauce. The sauce, with the chocolate and orange, just worked. You wouldn't expect it, but it does. The sweetness is so complimentary to the richness of the meat, and I loved it. The pasta is also homemade and a really nice, chewy, yet soft texture. Definitely get this to try! -Brussel Sprouts: 8/10 - I love Brussels, and the addition of walnuts and pomegranate seeds was great variety. I only wish they were a bit crispier, but the flavor was spot on. read more

Parking can be challenging. There's a lot out front, and a garage nearby. Potential for street parking too! It can get crowded, join the waitlist. Saturday dinner time the quoted wait was an hour for party of 2, two hours for a party of 4. Food was excellent. -Meatballs. They were small, crispy, on a bed of marinara, and very tasty. Highly recommend. -Truffle fries. Excellent. Light. Crispy. Great flavor. Highly recommend. -Pepperoni pizza. Very flavorful. Thin crust. The crust on this one seemed to be slightly over as compared to the other pizza. -Shrimp and garlic pizza. Full of flavor. Spicy with the peppers. Crust was perfect on this one. -Caesar salad. Fresh and light. I would've liked a bit more dressing but it was fine. The lemon flavor was pronounced and good. Large portion size. Food was excellent. Service was great. We come here at least 1-2x year when we are in town. They have a happy hour from 4-10pm on weekdays. My favorite items are the pasta! The texture is always on point -- perfectly al dente. The salads are always crunchy and fresh, doesn't feel soggy with dressing. Their desserts hit the spot as well. I was hesitant to try the olive oil cake but turned out to be one of my favorites. It's not a moist spongey cake. It reminds me of those rum infused drier cakes but you add the whipped cream and gelato and wow! It's delicious. Service has always been quick, friendly, and attentive. Ambience can be more romantic since it's dimly lit or you can sit at the bar and watch a game. It's pretty fascinating that they can create a both casual and intimate vibe at the same time! Personally just got off a plane and was so relieved to belly up to the bar at a former favorite. I lived in St. Louis for a few years and was pretty regularly at Basso for happy hours and their incredible pizzas and pasta dishes. I was relieved to see the space hasn't changed much. And even more thrilled the food was still incredible. I had Brussels sprouts (ordered extra crispy), the pappardelle, and the olive oil cake. The bartenders Reagan and Michael were both super friendly and provided amazing service throughout my meal. The sprouts had great flavor, I love that they had pomegranate seeds and walnuts in them but I do wish they would have been just a smidge crispier. (Keep in mind I ordered extra crispy and I think they may have just been the standard order). Pappardelle, just a 10/10. I can't explain it so just know it's YUM. The lamb, the dark chocolate, the orange zest. I think I may dream about this pasta and genuinely miss it now that I live elsewhere. So, to go see it BACK on the menu tonight was just the highlight of my week. The olive oil cake is new to me so I gave that a whirl. It was very dense, almost like a pound cake. Incredibly moist and served with a beautiful blackberry goat cheese gelato. I would order the gelato on its own at the very least to try but it paired really well with the cake and, in my opinion, brightened the cake up a bit! The space is super dark, so pictures are just tough to do sometimes and I was so exhausted post travel that I just enjoyed my meal instead of "letting my phone eat first." But overall, this is still a great option in St. Louis for some yummy food and great people. read more

Large eating place in the basement of the building at The Cheshire hotel across the parking lot from the building with the rooms. May need to park under the hotel - small lot. Has a bar in the center with a couple of dozen seats. Surrounding the bar are enough tables to seat probably close to 100 people. Has quite a mix of interesting cocktails. A key food category seems to be the eclectic mix of pizzas; we tried 2 separate ones amongst the 3 of us - and finished 80% of it. There's a fireplace - creating ambiance. Dimly lit as well. Although parking is always a challenge here I do like this place. We had a fabulous waitress, Autumn. She was knowledgeable and very friendly. Since we arrived during happy hour we decided to take advantage of that and got a couple of appetizers to share. The crispy meatballs and margherita pizza. Both very good but the meatballs were our favorite. 4 in the HH order fyi. I also ordered the house salad and lemon ricotta ravioli. So good. I had to take some of both things home. I went back to Basso to take my family. They absolutely loved this. I made sure we ordered different items when I was last here. We ordered heirloom tomato with bread, crispy meatballs, lemon ricotta ravioli, mushroom & truffle pizza, and tiramisu. Heirloom tomato with burrata cheese with bread to dip was pretty decent. The crispy meatball was the amazing because it had a crsipy shell with a sweet radish taste on top of the meatballs. It had a tomato sauce on the bottom and everything went really well together. Lemon ricotta ravioli was so buttery and so rich. The sauce was to die for as we wanted more of it. Then, we had the mushroom & truffle pizza. We didn't realize it had a duck egg so it was a nice surprise. This was one of the best pizza we've had. We finished off with tiramisu. It was a little disappointing as I was expecting more coffee flavor. I was pass on this and try another dessert. Other than that, I would definitely go back again. I would recommend crispy meatballs, lemon ricotta ravioli, mushroom & truffle pizza. Those were our favorite three items. read more

Basso is always a hit! I wanted to get a happy hour plan going with some friends, and realized I hadn't been to their fab happy hour in quite some time. I suggested it and the answers were an immediate yes. Who doesn't love their delicious food, happy hours deals, and awesome ambiance? The cool thing about Basso is that it's underground. You go in a small door, down some stairs, and have whole other world it feels like. It's dark but that's part of the vibe. We arrived around 5 on a Tuesday and had no trouble getting a table. Their HH menu is simple but delicious. Current prices reflect $3-$4 beers, $7 glasses of select wine, $7 select cocktails. They also offer a burger and fries, crispy meatballs, Margherita pizza, and a white bean dip. We ordered the meatballs, bean dip, and pizza off of the menu. We also ordered the cacio e Pepe and Shishito peppers off of the dinner menu. - the crispy meatballs were definitely crispy! They're delicious and spiced well. I like the sauce they're served with. - white bean dip is so fresh and the bread comes warm, it's wonderful. - pizza was so fresh and delicious, my favorite part was the basil. Perfect addition. - cacio e Pepe was the show stealer. It's my favorite kind of pasta and they do it perfectly. Amazing amount of cheese and pepper to complement one another. - shishito peppers we're good! I liked the lemon and salt taste with them. I had a bit of dessert my friend ordered (olive oil cake) which was super good- I've never had olive oil cake before. It had a bit of crunch on the outside and was served with goat cheese ice cream. My friends & I absolutely loved Basso! The initial wait time to get it (even with a reservation) was longer than expected (an hour wait time). Our entrees made up for it though and our table was extremely happy with the food. The burger is one of the best and juiciest burgers I've ever had and my boyfriend was also impressed with their burger. After dinner we had the tiramisu and the olive oil cake and they were both just okay - I remember both desserts from a year ago being better! When I pulled into the parking lot it must have been a busy night because finding a parking spot was a challenge. When I entered the restaurant it was inside the basement of the building. The lights were dim but it was welcoming and cozy. I met someone here for happy hour and the price of the drinks was reasonable. I ordered a pasta dish and it had a slight kick to it. Perfection! Just went to Basso for an early Anniversary dinner and we loved it! It's been years since we were at the Cheshire in Clayton so decided to try this restaurant located in the basement level there. It did not disappoint. We both ordered a cocktail, the Alice - blackberry, basil, and Wheatley vodka. So refreshing and not too sweet. We shared the meatball appetizer, crunchy on the outside and tender and well-seasoned inside. We also split the cauliflower dish and a pizza. Both were big enough to share and came out piping hot. The pepperoni pizza comes with hot honey, so good! And then tiramisu, creamy and just enough boozy layer. So happy we took a chance on it. Great Italian all around. This spot is super popular among friends - and I've never really "gotten" it until recently. The vibe is cosy winter fireplace-y inside - it's in the basement so it works, I think. In the past, I've had pizzas because that's what people suggested - and they were fine - good, but nothing earth shattering. Recently, I stopped in with friends. We mostly got pastas. WOW. Lemon ricotta ravioli was incredible - we were all using pizza crust to swipe up any leftover sauce. I also highly enjoyed by Ricotta Gnocchi. I didn't expect how good this place would be, from the outside I thought it was some gimmick place for old people. I was so wrong. The atmosphere was dark and moody with alt rock music from high school (class of 90). Our server, Ellis knew the menu well, was friendly and amazingly helpful. The food was some of the best Italian I have had outside of Italy. I had a Sicilian Cab to drink that was very good. Dinner was a lamb ragù that was outstanding, and the pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly. Our table had 3 desserts, tiramisu, cherry gelato, and cannoli. These were huge, so be careful. The cannolo was great, my Tiramisu was delicious, but the winner was probably the homemade cherry gelato. I feel it was a pretty good bargain too, I have paid a lot more for less food of much lesser quality for sure. If you love real Italian, not just red checked tablecloth spaghetti and meatballs, don't let the outside fool you-eat here. read more
