The best breakfast I've ever had in my entire life. No, I'm not exaggerating! I want to come back here every single day. Since that's impractical, my friend and I have agreed to come back once every 14 days. What did I have that was so mind blowing? Well, we shared the super french toast flight, which had 5 different flavors of toast. My favorite was the lemon blueberry, but they were all incredible. We also shared one of the specials, the smothered chicken omelette. It had this incredible, creamy gravy and about a pound of melty cheese between the eggs and the hash browns (which were also some of the best I've ever had). The food was just....perfect. So delicious. It hit every spot I didn't even know I had. When we were leaving, my friend saw the line outside and said "I'm so excited for all these people and what they are about to experience!" The food, while incredible, was almost foreshadowed by our absolutely amazing server, Tusiime J. He was so engaging the entire time, recommended our meal (which ended up being the best thing I've ever tasted), was HILARIOUS, and so attentive. He truly just blew our experience out of the water. Made it so fun, warm, and welcoming. Is this diet food? No. Is this food you should eat frequently? My heart says yes but my arteries say no. HOWEVER, I believe that sometimes breakfast can warm your whole soul, and this is one of those breakfasts. So maybe just plan to run 5-10 miles before you eat here (that's our new plan!). This is such a cute place! It's small and cozy but it has a charm about it and the waitlist is about an hour when it's busy. The stylish hosts also added a certain vibe to the place. I had the French Toast Flight (four different french toast flavors: (L to R) lemon, caramel with candied pecans, strawberry, and blueberry) and bacon and eggs. The food was so good. My only downside is that the place is BYOB and they offer beverage service. I wish they actually sold liquor and mimosas but I suppose the wait would be a lot longer if they did. Special note, this place does not serve alcohol but you Bring Your Own Booze (BYOB) and they will then give you plenty of mixers! A Chicago friend recommended I try this place out since I was looking to support more Black owned restaurants, so grateful they did! I arrived around 9 am on a Friday and was quickly seated, my waiter Tim was a burst of bright energy and explained the current special menu items (they all sounded great, I just had my stomach set on the french toast ) I ended up choosing the strawberry french toast and it was so delicious! French toast is usually hit or miss for me and the lemon French toast was so refreshing. I am glad my waitress asked that I try the FT first without the syrup and with the butter only. We came with high expectations for the French toast flight and were sorely disappointed. One order is more than enough for two ppl soo if you're coming to just get full, sure. (Flight is $15.25, super flight is an additional 1.50$ and they add their special). Growing up, I had the concept french toast was a brioche dipped in egg and fried. This is not it. The fact that my friend made a point for us to wake our hungover asses up early on a Monday morning to beat the crowd says a lot about how much foot traffic this place gets, no matter what day of the week it is. Of course we slept in for another hour. By the time we arrived at around 10-11ish, it was still about a 30-minute wait for the both of us. Hangovers and waiting don't go together, either. But the area had some cute enough places for us to grab some coffee (plugging in Coffee Lab & Roasters, which is AAPI-owned) while we waited and my friend is almost never wrong about good food, so I trust her. Once we were handed the menus, hoooo boy, I really wished there were 1 or 2 more of us to share the dishes with. I'm not much of a brunch fan in general unless there's something extraordinary apart from the usual $25 avo toast and eggs, but I had never wanted to devour everything from a menu--everything skeptically sounded amazing to be true. But sadly, we don't have an appetite of a sumo wrestler, so we had to decide very carefully on 2-3 dishes. There is no way that you can even come here without getting their infamous Super Flight Toast--like...don't even bother coming here at all if you're gonna flight it. They were all fantastic, but my favorite is probably a tie between the lemon and the special Kahlua brownie. The Lobster Executive was fantastic. The batter was perfectly crispy and they had already deshelled it so that you won't look like a slob sucking to get the meat out. I underestimated the heaviness of the food and if we ordered a third dish, we probably would've made it obvious that we were trashed and hungover and puked everything (we wanted the food to stay in our stomachs) out. Nadine waited on us and was awesome enough to thoroughly explain the specials and gave us her honest opinion on how much food we should keep it at. The price point is a little on the more expensive side, but at least you won't be paying for some basic-bitch "open-faced toast topped with poached eggs and a side of arugula"! Also (and not to get political), this place is Black-owned and you can definitely feel the warmth of the community flowing within the restaurant--one of the owners was walking around talking to customers and made us feel so welcome. I probably won't wake my ass early enough to come here (or for any place, really) the next time, hungover or not, but I don't mind getting on the waitlist and having the incentive to check out the other shops nearby. read more

I am so glad that I finally got the chance to make it to one of Chicago's well-known homes for a hearty home cooked brunch, on top of being able to support one of the Windy City's top independently owned and operated BIPOC restaurants. Batter & Berries brings both locals and tourists alike by featuring some of the best brunch and lunchtime meals imaginable by adding their own unique spin to them. Located near campus of DePaul University in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, the way that I had originally found out about Batter & Berries was the fact that they were featured in a profile on the Food Network show "Food Paradise" and I thought the food looked so amazing that I made sure to bookmark them on my Yelp app and made a promise to myself to dine here whenever I was in town. The opportunity arose on a wonderful spring weekend when I was in Chicago as I was staying in the River North area of the city so a subway trip was required. I learned taking the subway in Chicago can be a challenge because on weekends some stations are closed and it turns out the closest station to Batter & Berries location on North Lincoln Avenue is the Diversey Station, but with that station being non operational the day that I went, the next closest station was Fullerton and a brisk walk to their restaurant was required. I actually came to Batter & Berries the day before, but when I arrived at 8 a.m. on the Saturday that I originally went, they were already filled and the wait for a seat for even one person was an hour. So with plans already set for Saturday, I made it my mission to come back a day later on Sunday a little after they opened for the day on my last day in Chicago because I was that dedicated to trying this Chicago staple! When I sat, once again as a solo diner, I was sat at a table for four! The service at Batter & Berries was really attentive and friendly as they were somewhat filled for business but there was never a line as I ate. The menu at Batter & Berries is broken up into sections including their World Famous French Toast; Breakfast Specialities; Waffles; Deconstructed Omelets; Cakes, which I inferred were their biscuit dishes; Sandwiches, Wraps & Specialities; Greens; On the Side; Shorty's, or smaller orders of their signature menu items; and Drinks. They also had a Special of the Day menu listed on their back wall near their kitchen area and this menu had two options that piqued my interest: their Sangria French Toast and Salmon Croquettes. But after considering my options I knew I had to order their signature French Toast Flight, as that was what was highlighted on television, and this is what brought me in as a customer in the first place. This flight had four half slices of French Toast made from locally baked bread and each enhanced with a different batter and topped with a different topping: blueberry batter, blueberries and blueberry cream sauce; strawberry batter, strawberries and strawberry sauce; lemon batter, lemon zest, sumac and candied walnuts; and caramel batter, candied walnuts and Dulce de Leche. To pair with my meal, I also opted to order their Hot Chocolate. My entree was presented in less than five minutes, which gave me some pause on how long it took for the meal to prepare, as I could only assume that the bread was ready to go and topped with the four varieties of toppings. I can say that their French Toast Flight was literally one of the fluffiest and airiest French Toast meals that I've ever enjoyed. Of the four flavors my favorites were the strawberry and caramel as they were both sweet and refreshing which provided for a unique combination of flavors. My hot chocolate was perfectly made, although a little on the sweet side, I would order it the next time I came to Batter & Berries. My total bill was $20.07 before gratuity was added in, which goes to show how you can enjoy a quick and affordable meal even as a tourist in Chicago. I just wish they had more locations in the Windy City and beyond because the lines would be around the corner, no matter where they open. You better believe that I will be returning to Batter & Berries upon a return visit to Chicago, as it has to be a new brunch tradition for me. read more

Arrived at 8:30am on a Saturday and got there just on time (before the massive crowds showed). The restaurant was homey, a little quirkly, and old school. There were tons of folks there for breakfast and the staff was very quick to provide water to our table. The staff member shared with us the highlights on the menu and was very friendly. A friend and I came on a Saturday for brunch. One frustrating thing was I checked Yelp and was going to put our name down on the app, and the next time I opened it the waitlist was closed... Huge buzz for such a small space. Got here around 11 on a Sunday and had 26 folks ahead of us. Waited it out at a local coffee shop which I didn't mind. I really wanted to see what the fuss was about regarding this french toast. Got in when my table was ready and seated promptly, the waiter was really nice, had some cool riddles to tell and ensured we were comfortable. All the staff was really nice honestly. What really set Batter & Berries apart was the food and the service. Our server, Timothy, was a freaking ray of sunshine. This is another one of those things that looks a little unassuming but the flavors....wow. I honestly can't decided a favorite, we kept taking bites wide-eyed but then would move onto the next one and be equally excited. The butter is maple syrup infused and perfect. For my meal, I went a little out of my wheelhouse and ordered the cluck n gaufre; a batter & berries twist on the traditional chicken & waffles. The french toast was paired with toasted pecans drizzled in carmel sauce. To my surprise, the french toast wasn't soggy and had great flavor with a hint of cinnamon. The cheese crusted hash browns were good also. They weren't mushy nor cooked al dente, but crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
