Babette is the go to place for some unique items. Specifically the tongue sandwich. Tongue is very hard to find in nice restaurant, but Bavette has a great version. In the summer you can sit outside also in a great location in the Third Ward. In the cooler weather, indoor works great. Nicely spaced tables and a great vibe with great service. Reservations recommended as this restaurant has been becoming more popular with good reason. The tongue sandwich is delicious (kind of like a reuben), steak tarter and corn bread great too. It pains me to write this review. I normally don't give anything but stellar reviews but I must make an exception. I love to promote business, especially the good mom and pop ones. Well, this was not one of them. We were the only two tables on the entire restaurant. It was a late afternoon, as we were still on California time. There was one other table finishing up at the counter and on with table sitting behind us. The last table was friend of someone at the restaurant. Service was average. Didn't have any table set up (napkin, silverware, etc). The food took a really long time after we ordered. Literally 25-30min for 3 sandwiches. When the food finally came out the fries were overdone (at least 50% of it. Not sure if they were trying to re-fry the older fries but they were very brown and hard. When we told the manager, he was kind enough to make new ones. The cook said the fries all came from the same batch. All three of us ordered the same froes but we were trying to be courteous. But yes, all three set of fries were 50% burnt. The sandwiches were just ok. Definitely, had better. My advise would be to not re-fry old fries to save a few cent (and loose few customers). Also, be more attentive to the customers (as we are paying attention to what you are saying). read more

Visited Bavette for Saturday dinner for the first time for a party of 2. We made reservations a week in advance and were able to secure a table for dinner without any issues. Upon entering the restaurant, you see a small shop area with a lot of really cool rustic kitchen appliances / tableware and greeted by many of the ingredients that they serve in their charcuterie boards before making your way to the host's stand. The staff were very friendly and we ended up ordering white wine, the chef's recommended charcuterie board, hamachi crudo, and the potato crusted octopus. The food was really special. I'm not the biggest cheese fan, but I love me some charcuterie meats. The charcuterie board consists of 3 cheeses and meats that the chef selects for you that day. We had a peanut and nut allergy and the team were very considerate and accommodating. At first I was hesitant about the portions of food, but the charcuterie board was really worth the price. At $30, you get a cheese and meat board with various dips and plenty of crackers and bread (and even candied pecans!). The board was enough for a party of 2 to split. The hamachi crudo and the octopus while tasting both amazing as well, were a bit on the pricier side ~$25+ each for a small appetizer, but worth it for the flavor they brought and the experience. Tried this place for the first time and wasn't very impressed. The portion sizes were relatively small and I wish they had a little bit more options, like a smaller size cheese board then the one on the menu. I ordered the beet salad and it was good but again was relatively on the smaller size. I would go back to try some of the other menu items like the chicken or steak sandwhich but don't think this would be my first choice for a meal. I would definitely go back for a wine and charcuterie board night. The service was great and they also had seating inside and outside which is a nice option! Also, it's very cool that they have a little shop in the front with various kitchen items and you can buy meat from their meat counter as well! This is the second time we visited the restaurant. We found the quality of the food to remain high. The two dishes we ordered were Beef Carpaccio and Deviled Eggs, plus Sea Salt & Rosemary Focaccia. The Beef Carpaccio was about as good as we had a few months ago, although I would have preferred a bit more sourness (perhaps more capers). The Deviled Eggs had a little bit of smoked trout in it and was very tasty. The Focaccia was warm and fluffy and had good flavors. We surely will come back again. read more

Such a beautiful restaurant! I am normally a creature of habit - when I find one good thing on the menu, I order it over and over again. Here though - I'm always trying new things! I'm always surprised by the inventiveness of the food here. You can get pimento cheese on toast followed by hamachi crudo followed by a grape salad followed by a Cuban sandwich -- great sampler lunch for 2 people. That combination may sound odd but all of these things are so incredibly delightful, you won't want to miss any. Omg and get a cookie at the end. Great service, great timing between plates. Not sure what has happened, we have been regulars for years. We ordered our food and mysteriously my steak had "printer issues" and my whole family got their food while I got nothing. We sat, "your steak is coming," we sat..."your steak is coming" and it never came and we had to leave. I appreciate the manager's comp for this but honestly I feel the waiter didn't enter my meal or they didn't have the ingredients on hand instead of a "printing error." I've been here a couple times and to start I'd say you should definitely make a reservation before coming because it's usually busy - even on a weekday. If you don't make one and have to wait it's worth the wait as well. The ambiance is upscale but also somehow comfortable at the same time, which I love! The service is pretty fast, but they don't make you feel rushed as the staff are all very kind! Even though all of that is already great - the food is star here!! I've had the steak previously and it was cooked to perfection and was clearly great quality. This time my husband and I shared the fennel salad and cuban sandwich with fries. The fennel salad was fresh and had the perfect amount of citrus fruit and dressing on it! It also had crispy ham on it which added a nice mix for texture and a salty crunch. There was the perfect amount of dressing on it as well. I'd definitely recommend the salad! The Cuban came next and they don't use any deli-like meat so you know it's amazing quality! It had a lot of this perfectly seasoned ham and was super filling. The fries on the side were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The drinks were also great - my husband got an old fashioned and said it tasted great and was very strong. I got iced tea which wasn't too sweet and was refreshing. I'm obsessed! I've wanted to go to Bavette for a long time, I finally made it and I'm upset it took me this long to go!! We ordered the sourdough bread with the truffle butter (omg it was so good and as our waiter said "the right choice") as well as the beef carpaccio (also really good and loved that it came with arugula on top) for appetizers. For dinner I had the seared snapper (I've never heard of a seafood sausage before and was shocked how much I liked it, plus there were tons of veggies in the dish!) and my boyfriend ordered the wavy brisket which was also really good! For dessert we ordered the chocolate chip potato chip cookie-- would order again, and the toasted oat cake which we found a little disappointing (and dry). I couldn't help but admire the bar when sitting in the back of the restaurant as it cleared out, it had such a cool vibe and will definitely be on my list to bring people from out of town to. read more

Started with their Smoked Trout Deviled Eggs, creamy filling and a hint of smokiness. The Grilled Corn with black truffle honey butter was unbelievable, the corn bread was moist, and the butter was packed with flavor. We also tried their salt cod croquettes, they were only the saltier side, overall it was a more concentrated fish taste. The chicken liver mousse had a unique presentation, light and airy yet creamy and savory. We ordered their very impressive charcuterie board, that came with honey, fruits, jams, and some mouthwatering cheeses. My favorite out of the three was this creamy and stinky Blanesville Afterglow, it's a goats milk cheese that went well with pretty much anything. Our main event was the 38oz tomahawk that was covered in a huckleberry bordelaise sauce, and served with potato mille feuille, pearl onions, and crispy brussels sprouts. The steak was tender, and wonderfully fatty, and the tartness of the huckleberry was surprising but welcomed. After a sound sleep, I was kind of antsy to explore Milwaukee by day. But my MKE host had other ideas, and hey get your mind out of the gutter. Nothing like that went on! But again, sneaking in some granola and yogurt wasn't going to quiet my grumbling stomach as it was getting from mid morning to early afternoon now. Getting towards that hangry mode unfortunately. After much dawdling and meandering, finally had the opportunity to duck into Bavette (2/17/20). I liked the interior aesthetic, reminded me of Meat and Bread or The Ruby Brink back home. And again, I was hungry for sustenance. I ordered a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Service and food selections were spot on at Bavette. I felt my blood sugar returning to proper levels. My husband and I ate lunch at Bavette this past Saturday when we visited Milwaukee. I wanted to love it. I was so excited about it! But the experience wasn't great. We had a reservation for 1pm on Saturday. When we arrived, they didn't have a table ready for us yet. There were a lot of other people waiting for a table, and there wasn't anywhere to stand. They have tables outside, and the waiters and food go in and out through the front door. We had to stand by the front door with a bunch of other people waiting for tables. It was awkward. Luckily, we didn't wait too long to sit since we had a reservation. Maybe 10 minutes? After we were sat, it was a long time before a waitress stopped by our table. In fact, the table next to us asked if we'd had a waitress stop by yet. They seemed relieved we hadn't; we were in this together. We started with the orange and espelete marinated olives. They were good, but there were too many! I wish they tailored the portion to the number of people at a table! I hate wasting food, but the two of us couldn't eat that many olives! I had the roasted carrot salad with chickpeas, baba ghanoush, dried dates, olives, feta, and pistachio dukkah. The salad was great! My husband got a seared pork sandwich, which he liked. After we ate, it took a while to get our check. To be fair, there was an art fair going on around the block from the restaurant. It could be that they were much busier than usual. But - although I enjoyed the food - the atmosphere was chaotic. It seemed like everyone was running around and rushing, and you could feel that in the restaurant. Definitely not a relaxing lunch. New location since my last visit. Better street traffic area, for sure. Really inviting, open/ and airy yet. cozy. Lovely brick work and open kitchen to view all the yummy dishes. My lunch companion told me as she is a historian, that this had been a coffee Roastery. And in the front lobby, there is an old wooden time clock that the employees used to puncheon! Still have a meat case upfront as before which is convenient for purchases. I tried a newly added menu item that was under the sandwiches, but it was much pricier than the $13 sandwiches at $22 for pork molé tacos. It wasn't very much in quantity and I must say that the pork was quite dry and tough, even though it was drowned in the Molé sauce. Quite disappointing but I didn' want to order again as we were limited for time. I mentioned it to the server and she was polite enough to comp the meal :-) Will return again to try some of the old standards. read more

I think this was the best charcuterie plate I've had at a restaurant before! Every single cheese, meat, mustard, fruit... EVERYTHING was perfect and went so so well together. For my entree, I had their burger. I've long been told by a few people that they think Bavette has possibly the best burger in MKE, so of course I had to try it. It was very good. It has white cheddar, bacon, pickle, and an aioli-type sauce. It was very juicy, but I do wish the patty itself had a little more flavor/seasoning to it. Went to lunch w 2 friends so 3 people total. Nobody had any alcohol. One had a non-alcoholic glass of wine ($13!!), one had 2 diet cokes and I had a bubbly water. One had a salad, one a sandwich and I had a plate of Spanish jamón (which was actually delicious! ) and tomato bread w olives. The only appetizer we got was a single piece of horrible corn bread that tasted rotten and we couldn't finish it. So..... this is my complaint. Without tip the bill for lunch (again, no drinks) was $110. I gave a $20 tip so it was $131!!!! For a mediocre lunch???? That is ridiculous. Sorry. Came here with my family to celebrate while they were in town! They don't come to Milwaukee very often and I was hoping to take them somewhere new that they would love. I don't normally eat French cuisine and truth be told, the menu was intimidating! However, our waiter was so kind, attentive, and answered all of our questions. The food here is delicious! It is incredibly interesting, with a lot of unexpected sweetness in many of the dishes. Since my whole family was there, I had to have a bite of everyone's plate. I really enjoyed the charcuterie board and thought all of the additions were very tasty. The cornbread was delicious and flavorful.
