I knew something was off as soon as I approached the counter to give my sandwich order. The proprietor walked away from the counter as soon as I got there and muttered, "I'll be right with you." So I waited and when he came back I gave him my order, which he wrote down while I watched, and then took the orders of the two people behind me. I went outside to wait for my sandwich, and a few minutes later, the White guy who had ordered after me walked out with his sandwich. Hmm. I kept checking email, and then the White woman who had ordered after the guy behind me walked out with her sandwich. I went inside, thinking maybe I hadn't heard the call for my order, but no, the proprietor said, "they're wrapping up your sandwich now." So I finally got my sandwich and walked to the car to have a quick bite before heading home, only to find that it wasn't at all what I ordered, not even close, so I took it back. The proprietor didn't seem surprised at all and asked if I had time to wait for them to make it again. I did not. I was about to leave, but he said to let him give me my money back and he did, less the 20% tip I'd left. The thing is, I've been Black for well over 50 years, and I've been treated this way before--any one of those things I would have let slide as honest mistakes, but together it was clear that I was being told that my business wasn't wanted there. To be sure I'll never darken that cafe's doorstep ever again. And it's too bad, I live close by and could have become a regular if I hadn't been treated so poorly. Live and learn I guess.

Situated centrally within a block of mixed (mostly) residential/(some) small construction business…read moreoffice buildings and way the eff out there in the far hinterlands of the SF Bayview (off of 3rd St.) lies one of the smallest cevicherias I've ever come across. after finding out about it somewhere in cyberspace and noticed that it was peppered with positive reviews, I made the trek out to this part of town and came away pretty impressed. with practically no one but myself there, my shrimp ceviche (with a frosty bottle of Topo Chico) still took a good amount of time to make as it was whipped up as soon as I signed off on my receipt but it was well worth it. everything tasted fresh, the shrimp was deveined & cut up in smaller pieces in order for them to fit onto singular crispy tortilla chips and the tray included separate containers of a spicy (I requested a mild one & their version of it still had some bite) green salsa and another of diced up mango with the avocado slices mounted atop the entire dish. all this required a fork to separate, lift and stir some of the ingredients but using bare hands was still the most efficient & preferred way of demolishing the meal. seating is limited to a few stools in front of the joint, possibly with one or two inside of it and what reminded me of breakaway high school bleachers across the sidewalk with some limited seats in front of it. the facade is contrasted with striking street-ish artwork and a plain black one, noticeable enough to grab one's attention and possibly reel in those looking for some truly good seafood. beers and a popular michelada are also offered on their drink menu as well as some off the menu items that'll surprise some.
