I heard that this place was opened by one of the same owners from Bun Bo Hue An Nam, so I just had to try it. A bun bo hue place that is yummy that I don't have to drive far for? Count me in! I think I prefer Bun Bo Hue An Nam though. The broth here was good, but the meat there seemed to be a lot of fat on the meat. Huge plate of sate made it nice and spicy. My family also ordered bun thit nuong and pho hai san ap chao, which didn't look too appealing. The Bun thit nuong had a loooot of noodles. The noodles in the pho ap chao were so hard and hurt my teeth, I'm not even sure how my 92 year old grandma was able to eat that without complaining. Of course though, why go to a bun bo hue place and order other dishes, they can't really handle spicy food and to my brother, it was pretty spicy. It was okay, but a little disappointed. Since it was my first visit, I asked the waiter who seated me if there was anything spicy on the menu because I didn't want a sweet and sour sauce. He recommended a tasty sounding vermicelli with filet mignon & grilled shrimp w/a vegetable mix. Then I looked at my bowl and I only had 2 shrimp when the picture on menu showed 4, so I asked for the other 2 shrimp. The young waitress looked at me kind of puzzled and asked, "Do you want more shrimp?) I said, "Yes, I want what the picture shows." She tried to tell me that was "just a picture," so I said again, "Well, that's what I want!" My meal was served to me with a cup of something I was unfamiliar with, so asked what it was for. I was told it was a fish sauce to put on top of it. Unfortunately, when I did the rest of my food was got cold, because it was cold. It was A LOT of vermicelli and not much vegetables, unfortunately. I did ask for more carrots but it only came 3 more strings mixed with some white string vegetables in a little cup. I didn't argue I added it to my mail mix it in and continue to eat. It took a while, but finally I was brought 2 more hot grilled shrimp that were very very good! The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and very flavorful! However, once the shrimp were brought to me the rest of my food was pretty cold, and the hot shrimp or a stark contrast against the rest of the food in my bowl. This place surprised us!! Love the simple menu and the service was great! My friends and I shared the egg rolls, we all loved that. It's different than the ones we have in Canada. First, the name is different! Egg Roll here is our Spring Roll; and Spring Roll here is our Salad Roll. Very interesting haha... Secondly, they used mayo and shrimps instead of meat and vegi which made the egg rolls so good! Came here tonight since my mom was craving something spicy! She's been here a couple times and says that the bun bo hue is as good as (if not better) than bun bo hue an nam. Unfortunately I don't eat meat so I can't judge for myself but I trust my mom's judgement! I decided to get a milk tea since I didn't want to sit there and watch my mom eat. I had a hard time deciding what kind of milk tea I wanted but decided to go with the standard jasmine milk tea. The gentlemen actually recommended the strawberry one so I figured why not! He said that there were actual strawberries in the strawberry milk tea and that it's kinda like a jam. Holy cow! It exceeded my expectations!! The tea was strong but milky, and the strawberry was sweet but just a tad tart. He was super nice and offered to remake the drink if I didn't like it. You can forget tpumps or other places that sell watered down syrupy crap. The broth from here had a sweetness that took precedence over all the other flavors and it seemed to be lacking the beefier taste I prefer, that BBH An Nam provides. The BBH here just wasn't as comforting and delicious as the bowls of BBH I've had at An Nam. If you don't mind a sweeter, less beefy broth, then you may like the BBH from here. This is usually my go to spot for bun bo hue; however, not anymore. After eating a good portion of the bowl I noticed something black ij the soup that I knew should not have been there. I went ahead and scooped it out and lo and behold it was a freaking cockroach! Pretty authentic tasting. People would say Bun Bo Hue An Nam is good, but I would definitely say I enjoyed this place more. More tasty. First time here, feels like the restaurant staff could've used more training. We sat for approximately 30 minutes and still didn't get out waters. Ambiance: Its a small restaurant but I never seem to have trouble getting a table. Very clean and spacious between each tables so you're not shoulder to shoulder like some Asian restaurants. Food: I've only had the Bun Bo Hue here so I can't speak for anything else but I am more than sure the other menu items are delicious. As far as the Bun Bo Hue goes I have only good things to say about it. I have yet to find a bowl of Bun Bu Hue that is more perfect that this place. On a cold and rainy evening if you dont wanna get stuck up in traffic trying to drive to SJ for BBHAN this is the spot to go. In fact, we probably will come here from now on. On this side of the city, this new place offered the best BBH. The broth was clear and tasty with just the right kick of spice and flavor that doesnt overpower the smell of lemongrass. Their cha? was better than ANs imo though I could hope for more slices. Huyet (blood cubes) were fresh and well cooked. Meats and tendons are cooked to the perfect tenderness. This place is a very authentic Vietnamese restaurant and have a selection of Noodle soup and fried rice / noodle entrees. This is the closest Vietnamese restaurant to my house that is actually good! Even though this is a BBH place, I like to order their Mi Dac Biet whenever I go here. The Mi Dac Biet is a dry egg noodle that comes with prawns, pork slices, squid, and some fish ball topped with the basic garnishes. I like to get it dry with soup on the side. Such a simple noodle dish, but the flavors are quite good! I don't know why, but their egg noodles taste really yummy here for some reason. Not sure if it's the same at other places. I can't really speak for the BBH since it's been a while since I've had their BBH. I think I've order it once and it was over 2 years ago. Occasionally we'll dabble in their spring rolls, bo luc lac, or their bun and all are so good. Their pho tastes pretty standard compared to other places. Clean broth for all their soups and the portions are really good. The side toppings like the basil and bean sprouts always look fresh and clean too. I've recently started a nonstop craving of BBH and to my luck, the BEST restaurant opened just by my house! It's my favorite place to get BBH at the moment in SJ: the broth is flavorful, savory, NOT sweet, and has super soft noodles just the way I like it. I can add their special chili to get to my extra spicy preference. Their menu is simple yet offers a variety of different Vietnamese food. Because I wasn't so sure what I wanted to have for dinner, my bf said he had to take me here. He knows how much I love Vietnamese food and BBH is right down the street from home so it only made sense! They just opened this restaurant about 2 weeks ago and I'm very impressed with how everything is. The restaurant itself is very clean and warm as the staff greeted us right away and sat us down immediately. As our server gave us our table settings and water he asked if we needed help with anything or if we needed any recommendations which was nice, he was very willy to talk about any item on the menu. You can tell he does love working here, which was pretty awesome. We decided to order the shrimp/mayo eggrolls for our appetizer and my BF ordered #11 - the BBQ beef rice plate. I ended up asking for the Wonton Noodle Soup and the server right away suggested to try the Combination Wonton Noodle Soup (which isn't listed in the menu). He explained that it's even better than the regular dish, so I thought why not! While we waited the staff was very attentive and made sure we always had filled water cups, which we definitely appreciated! Our food finally came and my BF was right. The broth for my soup was so tasty and they also gave me a sweet/spicy paste which also complimented the soup nicely. If you like wonton soup, I definitely recommend giving it a shot here, and ask for the combination wonton soup!! My BF's dish came out super tender and juicy! Normally I get pretty skeptical ordering Korean style beef at restaurants bc they usually give super fatty pieces with less meat, but BBH gave large pieces of juiciness meat which was perfect! Both of our portions were pretty large, but we finished it all because of how much we enjoyed it. Sadly the appetizer never made it to us.. Our server notified us that the kitchen ran out of the ingredients to make it for the day, which upset us a bit cos we were excited to try it, but I guess it just gives us another reason to come back! He was very kind about the situation and recommended other items to take its place, but we were enjoying our dishes so much it really wasn't a big deal. They didn't change much of the decor from the last shop. It was a Pho place before, so I guess not much to change. We had: BEEF PHO (3.5/5) Very picky and snooty about pho. I've eaten enough PHO to qualify for a Vietnamese passport. Name a pho joint in the bay area, and chances are I've been there. No kidding. This one was good, but the broth and the meat could both be better as far as I'm concerned. If you want my idea of awesome pho, go to PHO VIET on North First (the one by Carl's Junior, there are two locations on North first). The meat portion was skimpy and the quality could have been better. The broth was good, but not my favorite. I prefer my broth a touch sweeter. It's a preference thing no doubt. GRILLED CHICKEN RICE PLATE (3/5) My wife's dish. She started out saying she liked it, but it ended not great, saying that she didn't like the quality of the chicken meat, fatty and dark. When we alerted the waitress, she told us they were brought to the wrong table. We were nearly done with our meal, so we canceled. Now in a perfect world, the waitress would have retreated to the kitchen and hastily packed up an order of the egg rolls to go and delivered them to our table with the check, free of charge. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world, so we went home without having tried the egg rolls. My wife and I were talking afterwards, about how much a difference it makes when waiters and waitresses make efforts to compensate their misses. It makes you want to go back to that place despite whatever. No such effort made here, which isn't the biggest deal in the world, but just sayin' it's nice when you see restaurants do things to reach out to bring you back. A new restaurant like this needs a strong presence on the floor, an owner or manager going table to table, checking to see if all is well. The service here is weak. Two inexperienced young people taking orders, no interaction with customers, no passion, just two bodies taking orders and bringing the food. Unless your food is off-the-chart, or unless you already have an established name and reputation, your business is going to suffer with this kind of plug and play mentality.
