Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey
    Michael S.

Marina Mother's Beach is man-made ... just like the entire area of Marina del Rey. It's designed to be a peaceful lagoon and sandy beach with no surf ... and that's exactly what it is. * Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. * Parking: $5 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.; $2 before 9 a.m. & after 6 p.m. * In the summer, Mother's Beach is one of the 7 stops for the Water Bus * Picnic Tables and Barbecues are available * The Playground for kids is the most popular section * Restrooms are available onsite * A swimming area is roped off for "safety" althought the water is pretty stagnant * Kayaks and Paddleboards are available for rental from nearby businesses * Cheesecake Factory overlooks the beach and is a nice part of a visit. * The 12-acre beach is close to several hotels * Marina Beach is the official title while it was originally called Basin D Marina Mother's Beach is a safe choice for Dads, Moms, Grandparents, or anyone looking for a beach with shallow water and no surf or waves. Safe also means it's a little boring, but like your mom always said, "Better safe than sorry."

Marina Mother's Beach isn't your typical beach. For starters it isn't a real beach. There are no waves. You won't find surfers, or even many adults swimming. To me, this a family beach. Children play, pretty safely, since as I mentioned there aren't any waves. You only have to worry about being able to swim if you go out too far. The water isn't exactly clear... but it does the trick. There are picnic tables and grills, and if you get there early enough to reserve one, they're great. There is also a playground close by so the kids can play after they've splashed around in the water for a bit. The water bus stops here, which is fun and pretty cheap. Parking is $5 I believe, depending on what time you get there. This is a good beach for what it is.

The fam and I were running some errands when I spotted a sign promoting a Food Truck event every Thursday in the Marina Del Rey area. WooHoo! I haven't been to a trucking event in awhile so we decided to check it out one Thursday. The event is held near Mother's Beach in MDR. It is a pretty cool spot since there is decent parking, $1/hr, there are a good number of decent food trucks in attendence, there are picnic benches that you can take your food and chill, and it is by the water. How can you beat that? And that is why I give them 5 stars. Lucky for me, the two times I went, Cousins Lobster and the Lobster Truck were there. Perfect! Seafood by the sea :) Also, Cool Haus was there one night, Don Chow, Holy Aioli, Baby Badass Burgers, and the Dosa truck, just to name a few. I hope they continue to do this every Thursday and not just during the warm months. It is a great place to hang out with friends or to chill with the family.

Hence Mother's. ... Great area small but perfect for the kids. Tables, restroom and outside shower perfect distance. Bring your patties and you'll be able to BBQ if you arrive early enough to get one (= ... Or get a room at the Marriott which is right across the St. Overall lived my time spent but most of all my son enjoyed himself much more... Xoxo N.

We took the water bus here today and even though it was a hot summer day it didn't feel crowded at all. Plenty of space for families and paddlers/kayakers alike. My son LOVED it because he could walk in the sand and water without getting knocked down by waves. It was fun getting here by boat also. Very scenic and fun. Only issue was the water was filthy... garbage floating by and lots of boat fuel in the water. A nice way to spend the afternoon though!

The address won't show up on my car's GPS, so I guess a tip is to put Cheescake Factory as the location since it's right on Mother's Beach. You don't come here to body watch that's for certain but you should know that from the name. It's mostly for children, this is how we ended up here. We wanted a good beach to take our daughter too and boy did she have fun. There's a small playground, the water is surprisingly not freezing for CA standards. Parking is so convenient and cheap. There are lots of covered picnic tables that have small bbq grills (charcoal). We're already planning our next visit.

    Mother's Beach a rainy morning.

Mother's Beach has a very family style feel and has a great atmosphere. It is very peaceful and quiet. It has rentals for some water activities and access to bring your own. There are volleyball courts, Picnic benches and BBQ's, a great spot to hang with friends and family. Great for kids if you are worried about waves on the normal beaches the water is very calm.

I had ingested several bites of it, (with hot sauce), but I couldn't take another bite. The meat was chemically contaminated & I got sick not long after for the whole night. It was important for me to tell the person that runs the stand. I had the best of intentions to help this business and wanted nothing in return. I walked up to the stand & asked the woman who takes the cash, (with the sharp eyebrows), if I could please speak to the person in charge, (or owner). At first she ignored me & then said, "I don't understand - no speak English." I asked who speaks English and she sent me to the back of the line by the cooks. I stood there for another 10 minutes and no one wanted to talk to me or answer my question. I told them that there was a big problem with their meat the night before & had brought back the entire meal, so they could try the meat. No one did anything except talk to each other in Spanish, (which I understood). The cook graciously offered me a replacement meal & tried to problem solve. The tall man, who spoke English, (as shown next to cashier Karen in the photo), was going to give me a replacement meal. I waited 15-20 minutes. I asked for the chicken quesadilla, and the vitriol that came out of cashier Karen, who said she didn't speak English was unbelievable. She refused to give me any food and said I had to pay $6 for the replacement taco. I tried to tell her that it was a replacement and she kept yelling aggressively at me and said, "no - you pay $6. You're not getting anything " and that I, "never bought any taco." She became angry and verbally abusive because I was getting a replacement meal, as a solution to my getting chemically poisoned. She was a bully and aggressively yelling at me to humiliate me in front of the other customers & personnel. By this time she had no problem speaking English. (A group of young ladies started talking to me, felt bad that I was the focus of cashier Karen's rudeness. They complimented me & wished me a good night.) The guy next to cashier Karen handed me the bag with the quesadilla. I asked cashier Karen for her name and she ignored me. Then I asked the guy next to her what her name was and he put his hands together like duck lips and rudely opened and closed his hand at me, (meaning that I'm talking to much) This was extremely inappropriate & as soon as I left, I threw the food out, because I didn't trust or hold it past any of them to have put something nasty in my food. By the way, there was never a possibility that I would be refunded. By this time I was so upset, I was sorry that I had generously tipped them the night before. Even cashier Karen's response to the tip had been of surprise; but then I remembered she had not even acknowledged it or said thank you, after receiving it. What this staff does not, is that I owned and operated a successful fine dining restaurant & wedding venue for 17 years. I have done consulting for small restaurant businesses, pro bono, in order for the businesses to financially thrive. I know how food is cooked, how it should be stored, when the oil needs to be changed, marketing, accounting, et al., as well as the health dept's requirements, in order to keep the public healthy and well. What I believe happened to the meat and reason I took my food back to the taco stand; is because they had been out of chicken. Since there was a meat shortage, more carne asada needed to be barbecued quickly. An abundance of lighter fluid was used to quicken the process & it possibly got on the grill, where the meat is placed; and the cooking process started well before the coals were ready. It shouldn't matter whether you go to a restaurant, food truck or taco stand, customers should be treated with respect, kindness & consideration - and it's called customer service. A customer shouldn't be lied to, yelled at, insulted and humiliated by any employee of the business. It should be run in a transparent and professional manner. I'm 64 yrs young & have never written one negative comment or review about any restaurant. Nor have I ever been treated with such disrespect, malice and ill intent. I felt it important to tell my story because nobody should experience what I did; in eating compromised food and then being made to feel like I did something bad. This is what bullies do and I've never had a problem in clarifying right from wrong, as well as responsibility and accountability. I didn't have a choice and had to give a star.

Although the facebook page is relatively accurate in listing which trucks will be present, you may be surprised by what trucks are actually there. The variety is nice with a mix of American and ethnic cuisines, street food and entrees, cheap to moderately expensive offerings and dinner and dessert. The parking is either street parking or the adjacent lot for $6. There is seating on the grass nearby or at The Victorian restaurant next door. The lot is small and a little crowded with the trucks, the lines and people walking through. There are also a couple of vendors selling jewelry and trinkets. Drinks are sold at a makeshift bar or at The Victorian. It's a nice event where you can try food from several trucks without having to deal with massive crowds and traffic. While I enjoyed it, my suggestion would be that the folks who operate the Santa Monica food truck lot hire some live entertainment. That would make for an awesome event. https://www.facebook.com/smfoodtrucklot
