I wanted to like this place. Everything looked good when I got there, but I ordered two burritos and the total was $38. That's about $17 per burrito before any drink. I was honestly shocked. For those prices, I'd expect a sit-down restaurant experience or at least drinks included. Instead, you're paying premium prices for food that was just average. Maybe the price ruined it for me, but the food definitely didn't live up to the cost. I also asked for a business card and was told they didn't have one, which felt a little strange. If money isn't an issue, go for it. But if you're looking for value, I think there are much better Mexican food spots out there. I honestly can't remember if I actually had their tacos before, but I've seen it plenty of times when driving in the area. The folks are friendly and very efficient. They have to be since they get a pretty good amount of volume here. The vibe is pretty frenetic cause it's a very popular spot. You can tell how good a taco stand is by the size of their Al pastor block and the line in front of the stand. This one both are massive. I'm not sure if it's because of Whole Foods foot traffic or the food taste but, the taste is a winner. They got the los of condiments too, salsas, onion, and cilantro. TOUCHED TRASHCAN while making food. Food preparer making my burrito repeatedly held and moved trashcan with hands as he was handling my food. Moved trash can, grabbed raw onions. Adjusted trash can, grabbed cilantro. Moved trash can, folded my burrito. After he prepared my burrito, he dug his hands into the bins of onions, cilantro, and rice to mix them up. In the photo, you can see the trash can is blocking his path to other parts of the stand. I think he was using it as a shelf? There's even a hand towel he placed there to wipe his hands occasionally. Why not put the trash can behind the fence where there is room so it does not block you? Line was long I didn't want to make a deal about it since I love the food and support this establishment. I hate to do this to a local joint that is one of my favorites where I frequent on occasion twice in a week. Came here lots of times in the past 4 years and it's always been good, accept this last time I went in 2023, during a busy night. Bought 11 tacos and somehow came out to 18 because they were so busy they were doing orders for 3 different people, at once, including mine. I had my tacos wrote down on paper for everyone I'm buying for so I don't mess up. So I showed them the paper and they looked at me with mean eyes and don't speak any English all of a sudden. Tacos La Guerra is the more well know, more heavily visited, likely more profitable neighbor of Tacos El Pelon. But the two have a few similarities besides their location. Both seem out of place to me. When I think street tacos in LA I think Huntington Park or Maywood or South Gate. I DO NOT think Santa Monica. And if I visit a puesto in Santa Monica I expect not to be impressed. That's why Tacos La Guerra blew me away. The stand was bigger than I expected. It was covered up in customers and the food was absolutely delicious. There was plenty of talking in line but once folks took a bite things got very quiet. When the food's this good you can push pause on the conversation. The al pastor, delicious. The carne asada, delicious. The chorizo, delicious. And they offer an item I've never seen before. They took sliced cucumbers and soaked them in a brine that included jalapenos. The result was slices of cucumbers with a wonderful, mild, little kick. They were wonderful!! I enjoyed these tacos, they are located in front of Whole Paycheck and 99¢ Store by Lincoln Blvd and Rose. Their tacos are all $2 which is a plus as they don't have to charge extra for prime meats like tongue. They serve Asada (beef), Pollo (chicken), Al Pastor con piña (Adobado pork on a spit - sliced thinly off the sides as it cooks by the flames), Buche (stomach), Tripa (tripe), Suadero (confited intermediate meat between belly and leg - smooth non muscle like texture), Lengua (Beef tongue), Chorizo (Pork sausage) and of course Veggies (mix of veggies of the day). They have all the fixings as well, grilled Jalapeños , sautéed Yellow Onions that are by the heat of the Buche pot so they get sweeter as service rolls on, Rábanos (red radishes sliced laterally into circles), Pepinos (cucumbers laterally sliced), diced yellow onions and chopped cilantro, -thed limes, as well as my favirite pickled Habañero and Purple Onions. Salsa are Green, a mild refreshing Cilantro Avocado salsa and a smoky Red. The tortillas are yellow corn, they hold up very well to the salsas too and are delicious . I've been coming here for years. But today I had a bad experince. We ordered our food and got charged for more tacos than we ordered. I went ahead and counted them in front of the cashier and she also counted them counting more than what i counted. Anyhow I wasn't going to argue, so I went ahead and paid. Got home and had my daughter's count them and they also got the same number I got. The cashier is always mean. It seems as if she's always mad. Also the tacos went up in price again. At $2.50 per taco. I will not be returning just because I didn't like the treatment I got. If the old cashier would've stayed there, then it would've been a different story. THE BEST AL-PASTOR TACOS!!! These tacos are bomb AF! People line up along the Whole Foods' parking lot for a reason. Their Al-Pastor tacos are fire-grilled and you can see the taquero work his magic, especially with the pineapple flip. The Al-Pastor is savory, delicious and crunchy. It melts in your mouth. My recommendation is to eat them there on the spot and not take them home. Their Avocado salsa is so good. Their Asada is also delicious and a must-have.
