My partner and I love a tiki bar, so the fact that we hadn't been to this place in the 3.5 years we've been together was crazy, but now that we've been, we will DEFINITELY be back! The drinks were awesome, the food was good, and the vibe was perfectly tiki, in dare I say a sort of classy way (is that possible?). The Nui Nui, and the old fashioned rum cocktail are must try drinks! We were celebrating birthdays so we had our own cocktails and a shared drink, every drink was tasty, a couple were downright impressive, and our server was friendly, super knowledgeable about the drinks, and the right balance of attentive but not hovering. We changed our reservations to eat here based on SO many recommendations and I have to say, we were not impressed. 1. The drinks too FOREVER to come out. I ordered the kea colada. It was good, but there was ice in it, which was strange. So even though it looked huge, there was barely any actual drink/liquid in the glass. I don't remember what my husband's drink was, but as you can see, it was mostly ice. 2. For dinner we had the pimento cheese rangoons (phenomenal), Then we shared the korean fried chicken (it was very greasy, we get better at home), and the Pork Belly Lo Mein (good but greasy). 3. On the edge of the French Quarter is what struck Jamie W and me as a rather clandestine tiki bar. We couldn't tell what kind of bar it was from the Vertigo-style 'Latitude 29' sign (Photo 3). Once inside, the dimly lit tropical vintage decor made a lot more sense to us, and the menu was clearly the brainchild of a tiki aficionado who must've done a lot of experimentation to come up with cocktail names like Suffering Bastard and Pontchartrain Pearl Diver. We perused the menu but received most of our guidance from Dave, who appeared to be the manager. Probably due to his Kentucky roots, Jamie ordered the $17 Mango Lasso, an intriguing mix of bourbon, mango yogurt sorbet, Licor 43 (a fruity Spanish liqueur), lemon, cardamom, and smoked sea salt. I went for the $16 Brad's Banana Banshee, a pina colada-like mix of coconut milk, fresh banana, dark Jamaican rum, and chocolate bitters (Photo 9). Interestingly, both looked similar in identical glasses and had dessert-like qualities that balanced their respective liquor quotients. They do offer a full Hawaiian menu, though we already had dinner. That didn't stop us from sharing the $8 Banana Bread at Work, a pineapple banana upside down cake sitting in a pool of blackstrap rum caramel and topped with spiced butter (Photo 8). It was a tad sweet for us but it was true to the bar's retro tiki vibe. Perhaps not so surprisingly, we had room for a second round. This time, Jamie went traditional tiki and ordered the $17 Zombie, a potent mix of rums blended with lime, grapefruit, cinnamon, and their secret Undead Mix. I went for the promising sounding $15 Missionary's Downfall, which turned out to be yet another dessert drink with mint-pineapple sorbet, honey, lime, peach brandy, and a shot of rum (Photo 7). It was quite a creative array of tiki libations. So much fun! We stayed at the hotel it is attached to. The tiki theme is very well done. Our server, Alex, was very knowledgeable and friendly, as was the hostess. We had the lumpia (my husband said he could eat them all day), and the catfish bao which was very heavy on pickled vegetables. The drinks are so festive and well made. Tiki bars aren't what people usually associate with New Orleans, but this was one of the most fun tiki bars I've ever had the pleasure of having a drink at. Beachbum Berry's leans hard into the tacky tiki aesthetic (in a good way), and it's even better when you're going during a holiday season and seeing their special touches. I am a big fan of tiki culture so when I was in New Orleans recently for work, I made sure to block at least one night in my calendar to make sure that I got the chance to check this place out. If you don't know who Beachbum Barry is, he is basically a rockstar in the modern day tiki community. He is well known for uncovering and resurrecting "lost" and "forgotten" tiki drinks and ingredients of yore. He has also written a couple books on tiki drinks, so he is well versed on the subject in both history and experience. So of course I had to give his personal bar a try and see how things are mixed up on location and not just in a book and from word of mouth. Stepping into the bar, you are taken back to a different time. Dark interiors lined with thatch and palm, you can either go left to the long bar or right into the dining room. The bartenders beckoned me over to the bar, fine by me because I was here to drink! The menu is extensive and has plenty to look at and offer (you can also buy a copy and take it home with you). I had somewhat of an idea of what to try. I went with a classic Mai Tai to measure this bar's legitimacy (it was good) and then explored some of the more unique options. The bartenders were chill and friendly and shared great ideas and concepts that I could take home to my own bar. You could tell they enjoyed their craft and were really passionate about it. Latitude 29 is my favorite bar in the French Quarter! That's a high compliment, considering how many bars there are here. The drinks are taken seriously. It's a real art. You can't go wrong! I love all things tiki, so Latitude 29 was one of the few items already on my New Orleans itinerary long before I ever stepped onto a plane. I made reservations well ahead of time to ensure I'd be able to get in, but even on a Friday night there were at least a couple tables open at a time. The aesthetic of the bar was great and the staff were incredibly friendly, prompt, and knowledgeable. Having eaten at other tiki bars around the country, I was a bit hesitant to have a full meal here, but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and would say that the pork belly lo mein was *the* best pork belly I've ever had. Latitude 29 also has an incredible rum and cocktail program with tons and tons of delicious, well crafted cocktails that keep you going back for more. I find that most other tiki bars have a couple or few cocktails I'd like to try, but just about everything on their menu sounded and looked great. They also have a super unique take on garnishes that I haven't seen anywhere else. We had two plates of food and 6 drinks, and while the bill was a little high, it was very much worth it and up there as one of my most favorite tiki bar experiences yet. Well, the service here was great! We got a seat immediately, and the waitress wasted no time getting our drinks and apps ordered. The drinks were well crafted and aesthetically pleasing. They were colorful, well garnished with all sorts of things, and cool drink stirrers. The food was pretty good. The menu was a bit different than you'd normally see, but again all of it was pretty good. Pictured are the crab rangoons, pork belly chow mein, latitude 29 burger and spam musubi. I had some more pictures, but they didn't turn out so well. I rushed them and the dark setting of the tiki bar made lighting somewhat hard to get great pictures with. Made it back here for Sippin Santa for the holidays! The restaurant is decorated festively! We were a party of three and we did have reservations. Highly recommend reservations. We were seated promptly and our server Evan introduced himself. He was very energetic and gave us a very thorough rundown of the menus. We ordered the pimento cheese rangoons, and fries to start with. Both were tasty, but I must say that the spicy chilli sauce for the rangoons was a favorite! I chose the Wreck the Halls as my cocktail, and it packs a nice punch! I ordered a second later on. For my entree, I ordered the burger meister. The brie sold me so I gave in and it was worth! This bar is good. Not great, not bad, but good enough. I can appreciate the impact that Beachbum berry has had on the tiki community, but I don't this this bar is a standout tiki bar stop. It's certainly nice respite for what else is in the area, and offers good food options to choose from. But, there isn't anything that makes this tiki bar "stand out". The decor is minimal compared to most tiki bars, and the 4 drinks took about 20 minutes to come to the table. Hard to chase a buzz with the extended wait times. Everyone was nice service wise at least. This is a good place to sit down for a drink and go, but unfortunately we left wanting more. I have been a loyal patron of Latitude 29 for upwards of seven years. I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars here, brought friends and family regularly, and even brought my entire wedding party here after my rehearsal dinner. I have supported this establishment to the point that I can nearly recite the menu by heart, which makes what happened especially heartbreaking. I made a confirmed 4:30 PM reservation through Resy for four guests, secured with a credit card. My reservation was at the beginning of service, and the restaurant was virtually empty when I arrived. When I arrived early and gave my name at the door, the hostesses looked down, immediately scurried away, and returned with another staff member as if I had done something wrong. From that moment forward, I felt treated like a problem rather than a loyal customer. I was initially told there was a glitch with my reservation due to French Quarter Festival. I would soon find out that was false. Around the same time, I received a Resy cancellation message timestamped 3:57 PM stating there were "past issues with your party." The explanations continued to change. I was told the issue was "above" staff, that it involved a prior visit where additional guests joined my party, and finally that "the GM does not want you here." After telling me "the GM does not want you here" and refusing to honor my confirmed reservation, staff set us aside at the door while continuing to seat and serve approximately 10 to 12 other patrons, including people who walked in off the street without reservations. I repeatedly asked to speak with a manager and was refused. I was initially told no manager was available. Eventually, I found out that one of the staff members present was actually a manager. Instead of addressing the situation, she walked away and disregarded me shortly thereafter. I was left speaking with the person identified as "just a guy," who said he could not make any decisions, yet still refused to direct me to anyone who could. I'd like to let it be known that prior visit referenced was NOT an incident. I was in town for a professional conference and had made a reservation for a set number of people. A few colleagues who were not originally included later expressed interest in joining. When I arrived, I asked the host whether they could accommodate the additional guests, and I was told yes. We were seated accordingly. No one was unruly, no one was problematic, there were no complaints, and no concern was ever raised to me during or after that visit. My party had done everything properly by reserving in advance, yet we were left standing at the door and disregarded by a place I had supported for years with my time, loyalty, and money. It is truly humiliating to feel like you are begging for service from an establishment you have faithfully patronized in the way that I have My party made up all but one of the African American patrons present at the time. Against that backdrop, being left at the door while watching other patrons, including people without reservations, be welcomed and seated without issue made the disparity impossible to ignore. I cannot say what was in anyone's heart or mind, but the way the situation unfolded reasonably raises the question of whether bias played a role in how we were treated. I later attempted to resolve this directly by email and received no response. It is genuinely heartbreaking to watch an establishment I loved and supported for years change before my eyes. This experience was dismissive, embarrassing, and deeply disappointing. It hurts to see what this establishment has come to. read more

Absolutely love this place! They have a fantastic menu filled with all sorts of choices to pick from, each one just as delicious as the last. Fair warning, one drink is never enough at this place! Within my week trip, I stopped by twice and both times consumed one more drink than I normally do. All because it was just that good! Service is awesome, and the vibe inside all the same. Some decor or even countertops have their own story, which is worth asking about. Sadly, at the moment they don't really have much for mugs. They only have one and it is incredibly expensive. I did buy one, but it was hard to convince myself which is rare. But when in Rome, and the fact that it was a pretty cool looking mug, I did make the sacrifice this time around. Hopefully, in the future, find a way to venture back into various mugs since that's one of the most exciting traits about a good tiki bar. Specially, a legendary one like this one! I visited recently for drinks and had a great time. I arrived on a Monday near opening time (3 PM) and got seats at the bar. The place quickly filled up, keeping the bartenders busy the whole time. This is tiki bar with lots of drinks and food that looks amazing (though I didn't try it). They have a vibrant, illustrated menu, delicious drinks, and fun tiki glasses. Service was good. Drinks were tasty. We had the Nui Nui, Suffering Bastard, Crystal Ship, and Nang Mai Nights (seasonal). They have happy hour (according to their Instagram), but it's not mentioned on their website and I had to ask staff about it to get a menu. We didn't end up ordering from it. It had a few food and drink options. The menu menu information is a little haphazard. Some drinks mention all the ingredients and show a picture of the glass; others barely tell you anything. And I would find a description of the flavors more helpful than a list of ingredients, but most bars and restaurants have this problem. read more

The only problem was is that they didn't tell us that there was only a 2-hour limit for the table and we were still ordering food and we were going to have other members of our group meet us there . I always think of tiki bars as hit or miss. After reading Reddit recommendations this came up as a hidden gem. We sat at the bar on a Monday night and it wasn't very busy. Dark mood lighting but full tiki decor all around. I tried the missionary downfall and my partner tried the zombie ( I think?). The missionary downfall drink was amazing!!!! Just so smooth and refreshing. It's a smoothie consistency with fresh mint and honey that almost takes like green apple. My partner enjoyed his drink as well. We appreciated the bartenders humor and recommendations. You can tell they care about their drinks because everything on the menu is creative and thought through. Wasn't super impressed with our trip to this Tiki Bar! A silly thing is that the menu is visually VERY overwhelming and I had a hard time deciding if I wanted anything from it. They are also very strict about not doing any substations for the drinks which I can understand. But we had some dietary restriction in the group that were consequently not met. Overall the food was fine. It was a little too salty for a lot of different plates and I was very disappointed with the prices. You do get a lot of fries but is $9 too much for any side. The tiki room feel is well done--from the international tiki glasses at the bar, to the bathroom decor.
