I was staying at the Cornell Hotel de France with my partner for their birthday and after our teeny tiny breakfast there, I was still hungry. I got a bagel sandwich -- it was the egg, sausage, and cheese one on an asiago bagel. I also got a regular latte with oat milk and a piece of the Hungarian coffee cake. I thought that was neat because my partner is Hungarian, so we were going to share it. I'm not big on walnuts, but it was pretty good! I'm giving four stars for the sweet service / staff and the fact that you can see everything being made for you. It seemed very inviting and relaxed inside, as well. I will say though, the most flavor from my bagel-sandwich came from the bagel itself, not the sausage or egg. It was a little bland, but I am in a very good mood because of being on vacation, so I wasn't disappointed. The latte was very rich and good. I love Beanstalk! I come here for coffee and lunch, and bring other people here for meetings. Some tables occasionally say no working there which is nice. It's a great space--light and airy. I've enjoyed the Turkey pesto sandwich, Funky Town special breakfast sandwich in January 2025, an iced oat latte, and a special Taro latte. I loved the taro flavor of the taro latte. In town staying at the awesome and stupid cheap Emblem Hotel around the corner and needed sustenance in between business meetings. Looked up my trusty Yelp app and the Beanstalk Cafe stood out with its great reviews. The place didn't disappoint! I ordered the Funky Town breakfast sandwich ($13.75) chock full of yumminess: Mayo, PJ Chees (pepper jack cheese), cream cheese, chorizo sausage, regular sausage, bacon, egg, onion & apple. This sandwich was perfect. So many flavors, ooey gooey WITH APPLES (Wut!) on a delicious toasted ciabatta. It is a big sandwich so I hope you have a big appetite. I could certainly finish it off because it was so yummy but instead, I gave the other half to my room attendant/maid. Service was super friendly and quick and the place is tiny but cute. I was lucky to find Beanstalk during my stay in SF. This place is so so good! I walked from my hotel for a quick weekday brunch. A very cozy space to have your coffee and breakfast sandwich. I have to say the copper cup for my iced oat milk vanilla latte is so genius. Do they serve iced latte's in copper cups at other places? This keeps the latte cold until the last drop. I had the bagel sando with egg, sausage on an everything bagel. This really hits the spot! The service is friendly and staff is helpful. Really good experience during my visit. With one free morning in SF before heading back to the east coast, I found Beanstalk on Yelp not too far from my hotel. They opened early, had breakfast sandwiches and coffee and a place to sit AND great reviews, that checked off all of my boxes! This great little cafe had a decent amount of tables, so I could see it being a great place to plop down with a laptop, book or a friend and spend a little bit of time. I forgot all the things so it was just me and my delicious sandwich for the 20 min. If you are stopping in for breakfast, get the Bush Street morning sandwich. Fluffy bread, crispy bacon, fresh tomato, thinly sliced onions, some greens, and of course the egg. I added avocado and I could barely finish half. It was a more expensive breakfast than I would typically expect (about $25 for an iced latte + the sandwich) but it was basically two meals and it was a seriously great sandwich. The man taking my order was quiet but kind and I appreciated the sign that let me know to expect my sandwich to take about 15 minutes to make. It was right on the nose but after you see your meal and take a bite, it makes sense. Will be adding this to my list of spots to return to when I am back in town! Beanstalk Cafe was just a short walk from our hotel, so I decided to venture out with my toddler in tow. The place itself is small but very cozy. They have tables outside if you want to people-watch. Inside, I particularly loved sitting at the communal table by the bay window--it's perfect for watching cars and people go about their daily life. The Hits * Excellent Coffee & Bagel: For myself, I absolutely loved the iced latte. My "Everything" bagel was done exactly how I want it: warm, perfectly toasted with spread, and nicely cut! I would definitely come back just for their coffee and sandwiches. The Misses (Mostly for Families) * Limited Breakfast Items: This place offers mostly sandwiches, and I was disappointed when they didn't have anything for my picky eater toddler like yogurt or cereal. I sadly had to settle for a brownie for him at 8 AM. * Service Struggles: The guy who took my order couldn't understand me when I asked for milk for my toddler. I don't think I have a heavy accent, so that was frustrating. I also hate when they put it in a cup that's not kid-friendly (no lid or spill-proof design). * A Note on Empathy: Thankfully, the second guy, who looked like the owner, showed way more empathy and seemed to understand the situation better. Bottom Line: This is a wonderful spot for a cozy coffee break and a great bagel, especially if you're alone or with adults. This place had rave reviews and we were on the other side of the neighborhood on our way to Salesforce park, so we detoured to grab our morning coffees and a bite to eat. The bulgogi looked super good so we saved our appetite and decided on eating when we got coffee. It was.......... okay. The drinks - we tried an iced white mocha and an iced soy hazelnut latte, both took a while to get even when ordered to-go. They weren't very good and were expensive for the size; normally I chalk it up to the economy and obv being in the city, the price still didnt match the product or the place. They were a bit pretentious for being lackluster and not great quality. It seemed bothersome when people would approach to order. The espresso shots tasted like they pulled them too late and were a bit bitter and watered down. The inside is tiny, which is expected. It is a little crowded because of the layout but they do a decent job of having seats where they can, and 2 small patio tables out front on the sidewalk. My biggest gripe was that they were out of a LOT... and some items they didnt put signage that they were out of stock. Including the bulgogi sandwich we were looking forward to trying, and most bagel flavors on their menu were also out. We reluctantly tried a bagel breakfast sandwich w sausage and we regretted it quickly. It took super long to come out and was very basic, no flavor or seasoning on the eggs or the meat and the bagel was cold. The sausage was just a sliced link that was disappointing in flavor as well, especially for the price. We wont be coming back and wouldn't recommend it, but I hope they take feedback into account as I understand how competitive it is for coffee shops in the city. :/ read more

We once loved their bagel sandwiches, but this time, the bagel tasted bland/not fresh, same goes for the bacon, which looked almost translucent rather than crispy. Unfortunately, I had a very unpleasant experience here. Customer Service was very subpar and the people that work at this location should work on their "people" skills. While there, the cashier informed my party that the listed prices were incorrect; he used a sharpie to change and raise the price of a burrito in real-time. Additionally, when I asked if he could remove the bacon from one of the sandwiches, he huffed and puffed in annoyance and stated, "all of the sandwiches come as is and he couldn't make any changes to them". I decided to proceed with the sandwich as is and give the café a chance. Upon receipt of the sandwich, I noticed that the bacon was undercooked. When I came back up to the ordering section, the cook greeted me with a disturbed, "What do you want?" The cashier then proceeded to interject and tell me that he wished I would have told him that I liked bacon well-cooked beforehand, again expressing annoyance. Stopped in here for a quick lunch. I got the Bul-Go-Gi Beef and a latte. The food was good for the prices and the staff was very friendly. I would definitely go again if I am in the area. Bul-Go-Gi Beef: I was pretty happy with my sandwich. The bread had a nice crunch to it and the meat seasoning was sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. Not huge, but pretty reasonably sized. Latte: No complaints here. Tasted good, but nothing out of the ordinary. The servers were nice and helpful with any menu questions. The menu informs sandwiches take about 15 minutes, which was roughly how long it ended up taking for my order. The inside of the cafe is pretty small, but after about five minutes outside I was able to get a table. read more

Coffee is always the first thing my husband needs to start his day, so after once again parking at Union Square, we did a quick search to find a coffee shop nearby that was open and had outdoor seating so we could relax with our puppy. Beanstalk checked all those boxes, so off we went. They weren't exceptionally busy when we arrived, and we were able to claim one of the two outdoor tables they have available. My husband went in to order (Dirty Chai for me [$5.75), latte for him [$4.95] plus a sausage Cragel for us to share [$10.75]). He was given a number and came out to sit with us while we waited for the drinks and the Cragel. What is a Cragel, you ask? Well, I'll tell ya: it's a bagel and a croissant Frankenstein'd together. I'd never heard of or tried one before and knew I'd hate myself if I let the opportunity to sample one pass me by. We got the sandwich option to offer a bit of sustenance before we got on with our day. As much as we enjoyed this spot, I have to take a star off for the service. Or, for the miscommunication around the service. Remember how I said above that my husband was given a number for our table when he ordered? We put that number (SUPER cute artwork on it, btw, I had to take a picture) while we waited. Maybe three minutes later one of the employees came out and said, "Your drinks are ready on the counter" and then walked back in. Now, we have no issue with having to pick our drinks up. But I took issue with two things in this situation: a) when my husband got the number, the employee said, "we'll bring everything out in a moment". "Everything", in this case, we took to mean "all the things you ordered"; and 2) the employee who came out to tell us our drinks were sitting on the counter could have easily, I don't know, brought the drinks to us? Like, would it have been that much effort for her to carry two cups 50 feet to our table? Anyway, the dirty Chai was good and my husband enjoyed his latte. We were both pleased by the texture of the Cragel (my husband is neither a bagel or croissant super-fan, so I didn't expect him to like it.) The Cragel had the crispy flakiness of a croissant with the density of a bagel. It was odd, it took a second for my brain to process everything, but I found I really enjoyed it. So much so that when I went inside to chuck our cups I took a moment to see if I could order a dozen of the Cragel to go. Because I had every intention of stopping here before we drove back to San Diego. Alas, it didn't seem to be possible, so I was left with just the memory of that bready moment to hold me over. read more

They were out of cragels around 11am on a Sunday. We got the bagel sando with sausage, egg, and cheese, and a tuna salad sandwich, as well as an iced mocha. The sandwiches were tasty and filling, made fresh with quality ingredients, and a nice light crunch on that asiago bagel. And that iced mocha was one of the best I've had, sweet and creamy, I'm craving it now! The service was standard, and seating was limited both inside and outside the cafe, but we were able to find an outdoor table with seats, as people came and went fairly quickly, just as we did. The Food: I went with a "Lox Bagel" and a "Dirty Chai Latte". The Lox bagel was good! Had a good amount of lox on the bagel, with plenty of greens to pair it with. I enjoyed it a lot. The Dirty Chai Latte was delicious as well. That Chai flavor was well there and it wasn't too sweet. The Service: Service was good. Staff were friendly. This place can get really busy in the morning, so come early or be prepared to wait for a bit. However, the food/drinks do come out in a timely manner. The Atmosphere: This spot is quite small. Not that many places to sit here, so most of the time I saw people just ordering their foods to go. Overall, a 4/5. Very good breakfast spot to grab yourself a bagel/sandwich and some coffee.
