My boyfriend found this place on Yelp and we decided to try it out. I'm so glad we did! Very cute atmosphere in a quaint neighborhood. Hipster and cozy vibe at the same time, with amazing food. My boyfriend ordered a cragel sandwich (a croissant shaped like a bagel w a similar texture to a bagel and croissant outside). It was a cute idea and Beanstalk executed the cragel perfectly. Wouldn't be surprised if cragels are the latest and greatest thing in the food world! However, my boyfriend asked for no eggs and sausage and instead got eggs and bacon. But, the eggs were nice and fluffy on the breakfast sandwich, so we were surprised by that and i'm sure they would've fixed it had we asked. Service was a little slow for bagel sandwiches, but it was worth the wait. Coffee was good too and my boyfriend enjoyed his Mint Mojito Coffee. Bulgogi Beef sandwich. That's all you need to have. The best sandwich that we enjoyed 3 out of 4 mornings here. Well marinated tender slices of beef pressed in warm crusty bread from a local baked. There is a spicy red spread (Kimchi?) and topped with fresh crispy, thin sliced cucumbers, arugula and other veges. My daughter and I dream of this sandwich. Didn't care for the cold drip brew or "contraband" coffee as everyone calls it. It was sour and all the cream in the world didn't help it. My wife enjoyed her cappuccino 2/3 times. It really depends on who makes it and whether the lovely owner is there that day. The place itself like all SF eateries is small with limited seating. They recently expanded this cozy venue and added a second location. Expect the annoying hipster camping out at tables with their laptops on one cup of coffee while other paying & eating patrons try to scope out a spot to enjoy our breakfast. There really should be a 20 minute minimum. This is one of our favorite SF spots to hit and you might be lucky enough to grab a Cragel before they run out. read more

3.5 The more I thought about it, the more I liked it. In the ten (yow!) years I've been traveling regularly to San Francisco, I can't say that I have made a bee-line to exploring Union Square. I've stayed there before but I've never taken the time to look around. Having the chance to catch up with an old friend, chatting over coffee sounded like a good decision. Walking down the street, I wondered if things always looked this way and I was too [fill in whatever] to notice or if the look/feel had changed. Whatever the case, it felt very San Francisco/very densely populated American city. I liked it. Stopping in towards the end of the day, we were two of four patrons. I can see how this place would be a madhouse earlier in the day. It's not very large but it does have a 'coffee shop in a romcom' set design. To say, it's familiar and comfortable but not so comfortable that you want to stay all day (ie wood seating). Not feeling particularly adventurous, I ordered a matcha latte with almond milk. Yes, I know. Reading it back, I'm groaning, too. Matcha is so tricky. The thin line between gritty and bitter and milk-smooth and faintly sweet is so thin... it can be an experience in frustration. I had a *really* good matcha latte (made by an expert barista) and it rocked my world. I've been looking for the same experience/taste ever since. This matcha latte was... okay. I'm not so put off by the bitterness unless it veers into being acrid. Similarly, I don't want to chew my drink. This was a bit grainy and more bitter than sweet. As I drank it, it mellowed a bit. I left thinking it was okay: it was neither the best nor the worst I'd ever had. I'd give it another shot. Where I round the review up is the patience of the barista. We settled in with an hour+ before closing (my personal red line) but stayed right up until close. Admittedly, that's obnoxious and I try not to do that. People have to clean, close, settle the register, etc. Just because a business is closed doesn't mean the workers can break out immediately. And this woman was working by herself. To her credit, she didn't cuss us out or run us out. That needs to be recognized. I'm sorry and will try my best not to do that again. I know it's not cool. read more

I came here for coffee, it was my first time having Contractband coffee, and wow, it blew my mind. It was out of this world! They also have fancy contraption to make cold brew coffee, you can literally see the coffee being brewed, drip by drip. Next time I come back, I'll be sure to try some food! Seating inside is very limited, so I would suggest doing take out. read more

Cute location, a little overpriced for what it is. We came here because of the cragel and honestly found it very bland and dry. To be fair, it's advertised as only having "eggs, bacon/sausage, and cheese", but as a sandwich, it turns out that this combo leaves a lot to be desired. (With the exception of the bread, it didn't even feel that far off from Jimmy Dean). Just bland and dry. I hate to say it, but I even would've preferred to have gone to Chick-fil-A. :/ As for the cappuccino we ordered, it was a little watery. We've had great cappuccinos in SF for $4-5, so this was disappointing too. Lastly, there were fruit flies in the dining room and that was slightly annoying. I hate to be nitpicky, but it's tough avoid that frame when it didn't really seem like our experience had any redeeming qualities. read more

Honestly not sure why I rated Beanstalk as 4 stars when it is 100% a 5 star spot (must have been because of the price? but it's worth it). Mina and co always brighten my day, as I have made this my go-to neighborhood spot. Beanstalk is exceptionally adorable, with amazing food, and even better customer service. I could honestly sit in here all day long. The cragels are life changing (a simple cragel with cream cheese is my latest go-to) and my iced lattes with oat milk are always perfect. If they're out of cragels (which does happen on occasion), don't fret because their sandwich bread is also amazing! Don't waste your time walking up the hill. Despite several positive reviews about vegan options at this place, we walked here and were met with a curt response of "no." And "nothing" when I asked if they could throw something vegan together. Maybe that's just the normal SF attitude but it was a complete turn off. I didn't even want to spend my money on coffee there. The breakfast at this place has some of the BEST breakfast sandwiches! I live close to so many cafes but still choose to walk to this one. They have amazing "cragel" sandwiches (hybrid between a bagel and a croissant.) If you're lucky enough to get a sandwich that is... You must know that the service at this place needs a lot of help. I don't know if it's because they are understaffed but they do not have good service AT ALL... They aren't mean or anything but they would just hang up on you if you try to place an order via phone. When I walk over to place the order in person, they would say they aren't accepting orders at the moment. Like what? Who does that? I'm willing to support your business during regular business hours and you say no you can't accept my order?? Instead of hanging up on me, they could have at least said that on the phone so I didn't have to waste my time walking over. Weird... That is why I give 3 stars. Love, love, LOVE this place! The customer service is above and beyond... mainly because you're usually greeted by the owners, which is great business! They've got tasty Korean fusion sandwiches made with Acme bread, which a big plus. My favorite, though, is their Turkey sandwich. I add extra protein by requesting egg... so freakin' good! For coffee offerings, my choice is their ice'd mocha made with Ghirardelli chocolate... hits the spot after lunch. Nice quaint sandwich shop close to union square. We were in the neighborhood and were looking for a quick bite while we wait for a few friends to catch up with us. Found this small sandwich place/coffee house on Yelp and I am glad I did. We had the Grilled Pesto Cheese sandwich with Avocado and Egg. It was wonderful and the flavor of the egg and pesto went very well together. It was so yummy that you did not need any condiments with it. The sandwich was tasty and complete in itself. We also got the Gluten Free Butter Mochi. It was very tasty and had just the right amount of sweetness and butter flavors together. I really liked the balance in this one. I would order both of the things that I had here again. Having said that, I do need to go back to this place to have the toast cup that everyone keeps raving about. This rating is specifically for the cragle ( croissant + bagel) that I came here for. Result: try to steer away from the sausage cheese and egg cragel . Sausages are sliced into strips not a sausage pattie and is quite salty yet you don't taste the flavor of the sausage itself. The bread itself is good hence they get the 3 stars but everything else in it including the way how they make the egg, cheese and meet are very mediocre. Portion is big, the cragle is a size of a bagel puffed up, so one is enough to be shared for two. Latte is ok. Probably gets a 4 stars. read more

Area / Atmosphere: This place was very simple and clean. I believe the owner had some remodeling done, he had pictures of his place before and after the construction which was a nice touch. Everyone here was so nice and friendly. They had jazz music when we went. It wasn't too loud either, YAY! Although it was a small spot that could probably sit only 18-22 people it was lovely. Very chic/vintage decor. Food / Drink: We had the toast cup. Which I thought was very simple but yummy in my tummy (as seen on pic). Egg, bacon, and a crunchy pastry wrapped around it to keep everything together. We had the black tea I believe. I do recommend for you to get there early if you want to try the toast cup. We got there around 10:30AM and got the last two. Recommend it? / Price: I would recommend it! Everywhere i looked I saw delicious food. Cant wait to visit SF again to try other food from this spot.
