I had friends from NorCal visiting and they told me how Beard Papa's is pretty popular up there, so when I walked past this place in the little shopping center on Alameda and 3rd street, I decided to finally try my first cream puff. I ordered a white chocolate and matcha fondant, which I enjoyed. I didn't even know what a fondant was before today but the best way I can describe it is that it's kind of like a small warm sponge cake with a sweet syrupy/saucy filling in the center, and when you take a bite, the filling starts to spill out. The sweet matcha flavor of the dessert was spot-on. And then I tried a cookie cream puff with vanilla filling, which I was not a fan of. I didn't much care for the taste of the outer puff or the filling, so I ended up squeezing out half of the filling. I also sampled my friend's honey butter cream puff, and while the honey coated puff tasted slightly better than the one I had, at least in my opinion, it's definitely not something I would come back and get again. I was so excited to have dessert after my Korean Corndog. I purchased two puffs to share with my husband and friend. When i went to go cut into them the inside was not fluffy and delicious. I remember how enlightened I am with every bite of that light toasty crisp and that silky vanilla bean cream combined. That same experience was relived during my recent visit to this location. This was the first time I've ever been to Beard Papa's. We just stumbled upon it after visiting Daiso. It's on the first floor of the Little Tokyo Marketplace, across from Toms and next to Cherry On Top. There's a parking structure right next to it. It was not busy at all and we were the only customers. It is not a fancy bakery whatsoever. We ordered half a dozen of cream puffs and two smoothies. We asked for no boba, but we got boba anyway. The drinks were mediocre and overpriced considering the quality. The creampuffs were very good, but if I never had one again for the rest of my life, I'd be okay with that. Oh so delicious and oh so unhealthy! Got to put away those feelings of guilt when biting into these cream puffs. Made a quick stop by temporarily parking outside the mall and running inside. Purchased a half dozen and an extra green tea cream puff and rushed home to taste these fine morsels! The green tea cream puff was an interesting take on the traditional vanilla flavor. It didn't truly taste like green tea but had all the texture of the vanilla pudding. The cream puffs are like light breaded flakes with a soft interior of vanilla cream. I ordered 6 different flavors via a delivery app. The good: what you see is what you get. When I opened the box I was excited because everything looked as expected.. Also, the actual pastry was light yet crunchy and fun to bite into. The not so good: I didn't like the cream filling. It's wasnt sweet enough for my preference and it was too "runny." As soon as you bite into any of the flavors, the filling will be dripping everywhere so don't wear your good shirt! uh..... what? i think this pertains only for this location, but....what? why?!? i ordered 4 of those big, filled with tons of vanilla cream puffs to gift to my parents. yes those soft yet crispy on the outside cream puffs and they PUT IT IN A WHITE PAPER BAG stacked on top of each other!!! *face in hands* what happened to the cute boxes!!?? so as you can imagine.... by the time we took them out, the bottom three were smooshed and gross. its my fault for not asking them to switch it to a box after. :/ the girl also didn't even bother to turn around to talk to us when we walked in. she had to back to us and just told us to let her know when we were ready. i wont be back to this location. i'll go to my usual sawtelle location. but the flavors are still the same as the other locations so one extra star for that. come on people..... you can't stack cream puffs on top of one another!!! :( read more

I have a confession, I creamed my pants. I took a big bite of the puff and it just exploded because that thing was full of cream( not a bad thing btw) The cream used for the puffs is made with Madagascar vanilla beans. And the crusty double layered pastries that houses the cream are baked fresh in store. The custard kind of reminds me of a really good Creme brûlée, except it's a little more fluid like. They fill up their puffs after a puff is ordered for ideal freshness. Beard puffs pastries alone are on another level too. Flaky as ever and hollow inside to hold more Madagascar vanilla custard. They've got seasonal flavors too like raspberry, green tea, chocolate, and I think cheesecake too! J/k but I'm really glad the ones in LA are still open. I really wish they bring back the chocolate shells cause those were beyond amazing. This location is in the Little Tokyo Galleria, and near the entrance too, so when my friend and I entered the mall we were powerfully greeted with the smell of cream puffs. So. Hard. To. Resist. So I had the Eclair puff with tiramisu cream and my friend had the regular with strawberry cream. I liked the tiramisu puff, but it was so messy!! The cream was spilling and oozing everywhere so I had to devour it. Very ugly. But I just thought that's how the cream was. So when my friend was about to eat hers, I got a ton of napkins to get ready. But her strawberry cream consistency wasn't runny or melting, but solid and creamy as it should be, even if it was generously filled as mine. WOW so delicious! A little too pricy though! I've heard so much about Beard Papa's that I decided it was time to try it. I got 6 mini eclair puffs for $6 (WAY too expensive IMO). The eclair puffs are the classic cream puffs stuffed with cream of your choice--vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate--then dipped in chocolate. The texture was crisp and then the cream was cool and sweet and delicious! Totally not worth the $1 each though. Too expensive. I came here for the first time, and it was everything I thought it would be and more. I generally like cream puffs, and I already think the frozen Costco cream puffs and eclairs are delicious. So I was excited to try the pricier real thing. I had a hard time choosing between the cream puff and eclair. (Basically the eclair is a cream puff with chocolate on top). In the end I chose the eclair. Although 25 cents more, I thought why not? I have a job now. I can afford eclairs. It was amazing from the first bite. The vanilla filling was sweet but not overly sweet, creamy, and given in generous amounts. The chocolate was real chocolate, not some frosting or chocolate spread. I'm no pastry or dessert expert, and I generally like savory foods over sweets, but I would definitely recommend anyone to check this place out! Now that I think about it, I think I actually prefer these cream puffs over macarons....... Next time I'm going to try the plain cream puff because the hard chocolate somehow made the cream squeeze out from the sides, making it more difficult to eat. Beard Papa's was around my local mall for just a few months before shuttering and I never had the chance to stop by. While at a work event at this location I decided to stop by before heading home. And I have no clue how this place has anything close to four stars . . . I walked in to one other person sitting and appearing to wait for an order. There were two workers - neither of whom said a word to me, not a "hi" "welcome" "we will be with you in a minute" nada - both just seeming to work as slow as possible doing whatever they were doing. At one point an older gentleman walked in and proceeded to walk past me, also not saying a word, and went behind the counter. It appears this guy is either the owner or manager and he too did not say anything of the above. Finally after 5 minutes he called me to the register and asked for my order. I asked for one regular, one eclair, and one Paris puff, totaling $9. It took me three times to explain what I wanted, saying as loudly and clearly as possible, because somehow "one regular" turned into "eight cookie puffs". Finally after the order was taken, he and the other worker seemed to panic as if there weren't any left but there actually were, and what I like - one of the maybe 2 things I liked about this place - is that they fill the custard to order. This is great so that the pastry doesn't get soggy while it sits in the window. The other thing I liked which I don't think can actually qualify as a "present" liking, was the pastry itself. BUT these pastries are not fresh whatsoever. It seems that if and when they are fresh, they will have a nice crisp exterior and fluffy airy interior. Rather, they are just soggy and deflated. Also at $3 each, that's pretty expensive. I'd rather get a Nutella filled Ponchik from Papillon for $1.75. I wouldn't recommend or return to another Beard Papa's. read more

Ordered 5 dozen mini cream puffs and when I picked it up, the product was poorly packed and made. The staff stacked two different flavors on top of one another which caused most of the cream puffs to lose there shape, and powder. When we complained to the employee on staff that day, she didn't apologize at all and didn't offer to fix anything. We had to do more work on our end to even make it look presentable and we ended up not even serving half because of how terrible they looked. read more

I love, love Beard Papa's! Whenever we are in town, we visit the Little Tokyo mall for some of their cream puffs. The store is always open and clean. The logo is cute. Beard Papa is like the Santa of cream puffs! The menu is easy to follow. You can get a beverage, cream puffs, mochi and ice cream. I have never had the mochi, nor the ice cream, because we go for one thing...the original cream puff. The one star down is just because there is only ever one person working. That one person takes your order, makes your drinks, fills the puffs, and serves you, before they can serve the next person. So, not super efficient. But the mall is pretty dead, so I get it, from a business standpoint. The cream puffs have a shell that is flaky on the outside, and a little soft inside, much like a croissant. They fill each puff to order, so you are always getting a fresh puff. You can also get one of the special puffs, which have flavors like match a green tea, strawberry, coffee, or several others. To drink, J gets coffee, and I usually get a green tea. No foo foo drinks though. Plain Jane. Who needs more sweets to try to upstage those delicious puffs? Nobody. That's who. If you are in the area, stop in. Take a puff...a cream puff...or three! You're welcome. read more

It's a BITTT overpriced to me but I bought a groupon deal for $8 that allowed me to buy $16 worth of stuff. I got 6 cream puffs from that deal. 2 green tea filling, 1 vanilla, 1 green tea ice cream puff, 1 cookie and cream ice cream cookie puff and an eclair. Their green tea ice cream is mediocre, I would recommend the cookies and cream instead. Like I said earlier, I'm not a fan of their green tea filling but their vanilla is great like always. Not a fan of cream puffs in general (and I have tried the regular ones from a different Beard Papa's location wayyy back), but the green tea fondant one had caught my eye from ever since I came across a picture of it on IG. Finally got to try it at this Little Tokyo location; first off, the surrounding shops in this somewhat dead mall are quite empty which gives off a lonely vibe, including in this store. The one employee working at the counter takes your order, then preps it (in my case: microwaved the fondant, aesthetically placed it, sprinkled powdered sugar). The lava flow of the green tea filling when I cut the pastry open was pretty satisfying though it was a slow one, but I was hoping for more of a stronger green tea flavor for the price I paid; the pastry itself was kinda bland and the filling could've been more bitter in an authentic matcha way. Overall 10/10 for aesthetics but average taste. read more
