This is a small place that I had never heard about but my friends are big fans of their pastries. There are several tantalizing looking flavors as I love a good cream puff. I ordered the chocolate with the chocolate cream and the cookies and cream with vanilla cream. I enjoyed the chocolate one more because I love chocolate so much, but also, it wasn't too sweet. It really helps to savor the flavor more when you aren't cringing by a thick sugary flavor that almost stings your teeth and throat. The cookies and cream coating on the cookies and cream one was okay, but it could have used more Oreo crumbles/flavor. These are a bit messy to eat because the cream goes everywhere, but I do want to go back for all of their chocolate varieties.

    - Cream puffs: light airy shell with a crunch, chocolate filling added good flavor without being overpowering or too heavy - Chocolate fondant: extremely disappointing ): I was anticipating a lava cake like dessert, but it was more similar to a dilute chocolate cake Stick with the cream puffs

Our last visit to Bear Papa was better compared to the time before that. The cream puffs tasted better and were not as stale, perhaps due to the time of day. There's a wide selection of cream puffs and a few desserts such as chocolate fondant cake and Japanese cheesecake. For the cream puffs, you start off by selecting your shell (original cream puff or eclair (which are cream puffs with glaze on top). Depending on the season, eclairs can include chocolate, green tea, strawberry, oreo cookie, churro, honey butter, s/mores, or ube :). You'll then choose a filling (choices of vanilla, green tea, and chocolate, seasonal Vietnamese coffee) which they inject into the shells upon order (you can choose a different filling for each shell). There are a few stool seating by the windows.

    Original

There's only 3 components for the original; cream, a shell, and powdered sugar... I feel bad for complaining about this but this is the 4th time I've ordered an original and it was missing either the powdered sugar or the cream. I don't understand why I'm paying full price for something and consistently receiving only 2/3rds of what I'm paying for. If I knew I was going to get an original with no powdered sugar I would NOT have purchased this.

What We Ordered: -Original Shell $4.75 We've been wanting to try Beard Papa for awhile. However, we've never got around to it. We had some time to kill as we were waiting for our table to be called at Kura. I asked the staff member on what she recommends and she told me that the orginal shell with vanilla creme was a popular pick. I was offered powdered sugar on top and of course went with that option. We all shared the creme puff as we didn't want to spoil our appetite before lunch. We all liked it a lot! We would definitely come back to Beard Papa to try other Creme Puffs in the future.

This place doesn't disappoint! I went in to get just the basic vanilla cream puff, but ended up with the Dubai Chocolate Puff with chocolate custard inside when I saw the signs promoting it. Thank goodness I tried it as it was delicious! I can't recommend it enough. It was perfect! The staff was attentive and quick to get my order completed too even though they were quite busy. Inside was clean and extremely tidy too!

Here is the secret menu, which isnt available online, if you want to call in to do pick up orders.

Love the larger cream puff eclairs; especially when you do a pick up order: the vanilla filling is filled with a cooled filling; while the croissant on the outside remains at the most delicate texture. -not a fan of the mini eclair cream puffs. -Plenty of free parking

Cute shop to stop by for a treat! I got the original one and it was delicious. They have different sizes and different flavors you can try along with different fillings. You can even request one with no fillings. The staff is very nice and patient. Parking can be challenging if you come during the weekends - street parking is available. It's a fun street to take a stroll around as it's filled with restaurants and supermarkets/shops.

Absolutely obsessed. The Dubai chocolate cream puff is unreal crisp, airy shell with a rich, silky chocolate cream that's perfectly balanced (not overly sweet). You can taste the quality in every bite. Fresh, indulgent, and totally worth the hype. If you're a chocolate lover, this one's a must. I'd go back just for this puff alone.

Cream Puffs - Sawtelle | Los Angeles, California

Cream puffs aren't too high on my list of preferred desserts. But if I'm getting dinner in Sawtelle, I'll make a quick trip to Beard Papa's afterwards. This popular bakery is in the plaza with Nijiya, Kura, and Daiso. There's a small surface lot and an underground garage with additional spaces. One hour free with validation. First you choose your shell. Either a plain one with nothing on top, or an eclair with icing (chocolate, strawberry, green tea, Oreo, honey butter, s'more, churro). Then you choose a filling (chocolate, green tea, vanilla, ice cream). Occasionally they'll introduce special flavors and special collaborations. The choux pastry that holds everything together is light and slightly crisp. An ideal vessel to deliver the soft burst of velvety custard. Quality and consistency of the filling has gone down over the years but it's still a sweet treat. Besides their signature cream puffs, they also have mini puffs, mini eclairs, and other select desserts and beverages. You can also buy the custard separately if you just want a cup of that. They used to sell food and other pastries but the menu has been simplified over the years. Won't go out of my way for them, especially this location. But I'll gladly take one if offered!

The best cream puffs ever! Fresh, light choux pastry filled with rich, flavorful custard. Always fresh and consistently delicious. Friendly service and a cute, cheerful shop. A must-visit for dessert lovers in LA!

Such a dangerous snack for me... I can never stop at just one--I ended up finishing 5 in one go! Mamma Mia~

    Tri H.

Over priced for cream puffs but it hits the stop. Place is clean, came here late night before closed and not all flavors were available but manage to get what I wanted. Service is fast but not worth tipping for overpriced cream puffs.

    Gluten free options?

    Nope

When do they have the chocolate filling? I don't see it anymore whenever I pass by.

I think they only have the cookies and cream as kind of "chocolate" filling. When I was there, that only had vanilla, matcha and cookies and cream.

    Do they serve shiro?

No, not at all. Menu is very simple and small.

When do they have matcha/ green tea cream puffs?

    Yes!

The spicy GOAM with crispy noodles as the base was great, definitely not as much of a spicy flavor as I thought, as it seemed the main source was pickled jalapeños tucked into the layers. I personally am not a fan of a concentrated spicy jalapeño bite so I ended up not getting much spice. However the rest of the pancake was very good! The loaded Kaisen was indeed piled high with seafood, but I thought the flavor was a bit light in the pancake itself. The seafood did seem fresh and tender though! The hamburg omurice was absolutely delicious. Something about their demiglace sauce here was special, I'm usually not a fan but this time I ate every drop! The steak was also tender and juicy, a perfect combination with the dish as a whole. At a late lunch time (2PMish) it wasn't too busy, and service was pretty quick! The appetizers we got were delicious. The cabbage and the octopus balls were great. We also enjoyed the drinks we ordered. Also, while I'm about to criticize the service, our servers never spoke rudely to us. So, the bad. -Sat us down, took our drink order and then forgot about us. When we asked about our drinks. Our waitress came back to ask us 3 different times for our drink order and still got the drinks wrong. -We were mainly ignored and were rarely checked on. I thought it may have been because we were in the patio. But no, the family across from our table seemed to have no problem getting service, but who knows the reason. -Omurice dishes were mediocre. We got the mentaiko, the curry and the hamburg dishes. Mentaiko was probably the best taste wise. The curry and hamburg were watery and bland. Had to hunt a waiter down to get us some sort of hot sauce. They would have benefited from some pickled veggies or some other different textures. After a while the dishes started to feel monotonous and gross. -As I had mentioned before, we were sitting in the front patio. By the end of our meal, I got up to go to the restroom. As I am walking down, one of the workers asked if I was a customer there. Stunned, I blurted "Yes" and continued on. My dear reader, that was my final straw. We had been sitting outside for what felt like HOURS. Got bad service, had mediocre main dishes, watching two servers running around like chickens with their heads chopped off. Only to come inside and get rudely questioned if I had been eating there by someone I am assuming was inside the entire time. If this is an issue the restaurant has, WHY ARE YOU NOT CHECKING WHO IS DINING AT YOUR ESTABLISHMENT PERIODICALLY. WHY ARE YOU INTERROGATING PAYING CUSTOMERS WHO ARE JUST TRYING TO PEE. WHY ARE YOUR WORKERS NOT DOING THEIR DUE DILIGENCE LOOK AT YOUR CUSTOMERS. I have never been asked if I was eating somewhere because I never HAD TO. For a store front that small, how are you not aware of your customers?! I am still getting heated just thinking back on it. Honestly, these issues separately I could have dealt with them, but it all happened in ONE meal. it was just a bad experience. I will not come back here. Do better.
