They have always made time for me and my pets. If they don't have an appointment and it's urgent or possibly an emergency, they have ALWAYS allowed me to drop off my pets. Beckwith Animal Hospital has provided me with peace of mind and my fur baby with exceptional care. I worked with Dr Chad O'Brien after being referred to BVA by a friend who had him Perform TPLO surgery on their dog. I originally received a diagnosis and quote from Sage Animal Hospital in Dublin, as I live in the Bay Area. They quoted me nearly $8,000. When I went to Beckwith for a 2nd opinion and quote, they quoted me $3,000-$3,500...same surgery (TPLO) but they also included laser therapy treatments on her post-op visits to speed along healing which I felt was a nice "bonus". My final bill ended up being slightly above $3,200. They do offer financing through Care Credit as well. I dropped off my dog for her surgery at 6.5 months pregnant, during the COVID-19 Outbreak and being laid off from my job (due to the pandemic's effect on my industry). It was the worst timing for me to be going through all of these things at once. The staff did a wonderful job providing me with information and setting my expectations for a long road to recovery. My dog is healing wonderfully at first; at day-6 post-op she showed signs of digression and stopped bearing weight on her "new" leg--after calling and speaking with Dr O'Brien, he booked me an appt for the next day where they x-rayed to rule out any issues with the implant/screws, with no extra charges--diagnosis was soreness and that I shouldn't be concerned and just continue to drastically limit her activity. So I overreacted--but pregnancy hormones + too much free time on my hands, I was bound to jump to conclusions. Dr O'Brien completely put my mind at ease! Not only that, but they didn't even make me go into the hospital to limit my exposure--came out to my car to grab my dog, and then brought her back out to me to discuss results in open-air. Above and beyond! Throughout the entire process, from initially booking my consultation through final follow up appointment, the staff has been very helpful and courteous. They've called to check in on how my dog was doing on multiple occasions and are prompt with reminders for upcoming appointments, etc. Anytime I had questions, I was able to reach somebody the same-day with clear and concise answers. At first I was hesitant to elect to book my dogs TPLO surgery at Beckwith. The doctors aren't "board certified surgeons" like at Sage so they don't have all the fancy letters after their names. But after my experience there, the results I have seen, and the service and follow up I have gotten, I will say it is 100% worth the drive from the Bay Area to Modesto to not only save thousands of dollars, but receive exceptional care for my fur baby. This has been my normal vet for a little while now. Recently my dog got a hematoma in her ear, and I called early as they opened to see if I could get her in. I was told that I had to wait until a vet showed up since they start about an hour after the office opens and that they would call me back. 3 times that day I called back to check and see if I could get my dog seen, and was told they were still looking into it. It's now the next day with no callback and I've already gone to another vet. I chose another vet that could not only take her but they even called the next morning to check in on my dog and make sure she's doing ok on her meds and everything else. I will never be back here because of this crappy behavior. read more

I called this morning to get pricing on cat vaccinations and the process for having stray cats looked at and treated. The receptionist who answered was somewhat helpful and said that we would have to schedule an appointment for examination. Okay, Good so far. He proceeds to ask if I have an account to which I said I didn't. He then says they are not opening any new accounts. No explanation as to why they can't, when they can, nothing. After the awkward silence, I thanked him for his help and hung up. How are they still in business? Maybe take the appointment option off the phone call menu?? I called my regular veterinarian and got my appointments made and questions answered. VMA in Modesto actually helps people in need. They are pricey at times but health care comes at a cost. I took my dog in after he out of nowhere became very sick during the night. I was so sad because I felt my 16yr old dog's life was ending as he was very very sick. Dr. O'Brien and his team saved his life! I am forever thankful. It turned out my dog had Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis. We have been customers of Dr O'Brien for many years. He really is the best in the business. His staff is another question. I have on multiple occasions been denied an appt for my sick dog. I was even denied an appt for my dying dog, they said I could bring him in the next day, he wasn't going to live for a few more hours much less another day!! If other vets can offer emergency appts why can't they do the same? Leave openings in your day for these such emergencies??? My dog was always a patient here since we had her in 2011 , she's 12 this may. last September she had a miscarriage and we had the worst experience ever, not only did our favorite Vet leave us during the pandemic the new vet made it seemed like it was our fault our dog had a miscarriage because of our delay and us being uneducated. I am and was still am a clueless dog caregiver when one little furball is pregnant, I kept this new dr in the loop for about 2 weeks every other day. The doctors assured us that she was going to give birth naturally. There was a time I had her get check in a week after I was told she was going to be in labor , I saw a gluey green mucus like strand come out of her. Quickly did we take her to the vet, and the vet said we were wasting our time and money. (3 days after due date) We went home for a couple of days and our dog starting bleeding dark brown, still no signs of baby, we did found out that if a baby was not deliver it could harm our fur ball from a friend. After many visits to this Vets office, we took her once more, after we were told we were wasting our time trying to bring in our fur ball. All in all our fur all couldn't give birth, her baby was as stuck on her pelvic, we had to do an emergency uterus removal and taking out her unborn furball all at the same time. That's caused our dogs anxiety to worsenxOur furball development post partum depression. Only only was our baby's health in danger we lost about 1k altogether, being lyed to about natural birth when clearly how was this vet not able to detect to see if this unborn furball was going to be too big for natural labor. We sadden for the lost , but I would hate anyone to experience the same. If you care about your pets don't take them here. The new vets they don't care, they are careless money sucking humans. After a year that this had been posted this Vet denied caring for my dog which is understandable, somehow I felt threatened to remove this post. I didn't feel like I had a voice to share my opinion . In the conversation with this Vet he was very upset and rude, not professional for clearly denying the care for my dog but even threatened to share my dogs personal health information online. Disgusting. I was so afraid I even removed this post at one point, someone reminded me that I had an opinion. But here it is back as a review for those who are curious about the care . This may/may not be all their care and experience here for their customers but as a care giver to my dog this is my experience. read more

I have brought both of my dogs here for all of their routine visits and any emergencies for the last 5 years--and recently. I couldn't be more disappointed with the care we've received. The last 4x I have called for an appointment--I haven't been able to get anything other than a "drop off" appointment... (meaning--bring in your dog--drop them off--and we will look at them when we get a chance--but you don't get to see/speak with the vet. Someone calls and let you know to come pick up your pet and you're given instructions) I've had to do this several times because they don't have time to see my pets in a timely matter when you call for an appointment. My most recent "drop off" was by far the worst. I called in for my golden retriever who had developed a limp in his front leg. I explained he wasn't getting up, wasn't eating, and was very lethargic. I had taken a video of his limp. I received a call from Dr. O'Brien--who told me there was nothing wrong with my pet. I protested--and since I complained he prescribed some pain medication but didn't perform any further examination. 2 weeks later--my pup had not improved. I called again to schedule an appointment--and once again was told they wouldn't be able to see my dog for more than a week unless I did a drop off. I scheduled the appointment--As I wanted to be present for the examination. But--after 2 days when he hadn't improved I called sylvan veterinary clinic who could see him the same day. Sylvan saw the issue with my dog--and ordered x-rays. ...once the x-rays were reviewed they uncovered my dog had cancer--everywhere (his Lungs, stomach, spleen) and needed to be put down. Beckwith vet--wouldn't see him in a timely matter. Missed this issue on 2 prior drop offs (within this same month) by not doing a thorough examination (even though I was charged and sent home with medication he didn't need on both visits)--and completely missed that my dog had lost more than 15 pounds over the course of that month. I trusted them with the care of my family members when I should not have. I will never bring my pets here again--they're clearly too busy to take the time to do a complete exam. I am so sorry my pet had to suffer extra time due to their complete negligence. Do your self a favor and take your pets elsewhere. read more

We went here back about 6 months ago to get our dogs teeth pulled , I knew at the point I found a veterinary that really cares and not trying to charge us for things that weren't needed. 6 months later my little dog wasn't feeling good , so, went there for appts 3 weeks in a row to check on him , again , wasn't persuaded into doing and paying things that were not necessary at the time , Yuen's out that our little guy had lots of things wrong with him and we ended up having to put him to sleep today , the vet called me herself to give me the bad news of the blood test that was done . This vets office was once the only place I would recommend back in the glory days when they had the Maze office but oh my how things have changed. Both Dr. Chad and his father are sexist and will absolutely talk down to you. Dr. O'Brien even put his hand on my shoulder as he said "sweetheart..." and then continued to mansplain to me the procedure that his female peer had just explained with perfect understanding...but that's not the worst of it... My dog has had several surgeries here. I took my pet to have her staples removed after the first surgery and they had forgotten a couple of them in. "No problem" I thought, honest mistake. SO, I took my pet back and had them taken out. Unfortunately, my pet needed a second surgery. So again, after the surgery I go to get her staples removed. I tell the technician "please be extra cautious as last time y'all forgot". She scoffed and said "of course". Guess what. They left a few in! I noticed when I walked back to my car. So, I march back inside and say please make sure! They bring her back to me this time promising nothing was forgotten. A few days go by and I look down at my pet and low and freaking behold there is still a staple in her leg. At this point, I'm frustrated. My poor dog has been through enough and now I'm having to drive back to the vet for a third time. When I confronted Dr. Chad about the problem and asked why he didn't count how many they use he said "that's people stuff; we are in such a hurry to finish we don't count we just staple away". I was flabbergasted already but then he went on to say how "sometimes we even have to do micro surgeries to get the rest of the missed staples out." I was so mad. Who then has to pay for that and what about the pet who has to suffer ANOTHER surgery for their lack of attention to detail. I was so mortified. He then went on to say that dog's lick themselves and cause the staples to turn and then the vet can't see it... I said "so it's my dog's fault, because she has been monitored every minute that she is out of a cone so there is literally no way she could have licked her leg". After a few more hmm and haws from Dr. Chad he just said "well let's just get it out and move on". So we go into another room... side note: I had pre-paid for laser therapy to help with the healing and noticed that each time we went for that treatment, the gun had been broken. I even heard the techs laughing that someone had broke it when they were using it to heal their sore muscles from the gym. So there we are in this other room as he is digging around in my dog's leg trying to remove the staple... I let Dr. Chad know how disappointed I was and then brought up the laser gun issue. When I mentioned this issue to Dr. Chad and how my pet was not receiving what we paid for, he told me I was lying. I asked him to call in Chelsea or another one of the vet techs who could attest to me complaining about the laser gun in previous visits but instead he just ignored me and tried to find evidence of when exactly the gun broke. At that point I knew, its not about the pets.... it's ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. (and just for context I've spent over 10k at Beckwith hospital over the last 6 years). Flash forward to this weekend... One of my dogs was extremely sick; lethargic, not eating, vomiting/pooping blood so my husband reached out to them to see if they could fit us in as we haven't had the chance to find a new vet yet. Understandably, they were booked. So, my husband found another vet and therefor had paperwork transferred over to the new office. A tech from Beckwith called my husband to let him know it was processed.... and then my phone rang (even though I was not part of any of this situation).... when I answered, it was another technician from Beckwith and her exact words: Dr. Chad wanted me to specifically call you to let you know both of your pets' paperwork was sent over so you shouldn't need anything from us again. So... while my pet is at another vet's office, sicker than well... herself.... Dr. Chad wanted to MAKE SURE I got his passive aggression because I totally needed the extra stress. I did not plan on writing a review about the past issues until that phone call. read more

I've had the privilege of doing business with Beckwith veterinary Hospital for the past 10 or more years. In March 20 20, my great Dane Duke was in his own backyard and was attacked by a neighbors cat. The cat literally pounced on Dukes back with its claws in him, Duke violently shit his stomach and rib cage on the cement sidewalk, his all of his legs coming right out from underneath him. I heard an extremely loud thud, duke let out a painful roar. I immediately called the veterinarians office, they said to watch him and see if he was drinking water eating and urinating. For the next 24 hours I laid on the cement pad right next to my beloved dog. Duke weighed 167 pounds making it impossible for one person to pick him up because he was a rather big boy! I finally managed to get Duke to walk into the family vanAnd sit on the seats. I had called ahead of time and given the staff at Beckwith a warning that I was headed in with an emergency and I explained them in detail the situation. When I arrived at Beckwith veterinary Hospital, the staff immediately helped bring Duke in and brought me right into the room, the veterinarian was in the room within just a few minutes. Unfortunately, Duke had sustained major internal injuries and he was suffering. I had to make the difficult decision to euthanize my best friend, not at all an easy thing to have to do. Duke was the only thing I had left in life, that was a hard day! The staff went out of their way to be kind and gentle, they show true compassion! Located directly next to Beckwith veterinary Hospital is a kennel, if you need to get your dogs in for routine shots routine visits and you are going out of town, both businesses seem to work together wonderfully. I also highly recommend the kennel, their staff is awesome with dogs even large breed dogs like Great Danes. read more

I have recently become a dog owner. First time. I have an Irish wolfhound. My boys name is Augustus. He Is 10 months old. We have been taking him to the O'Brians since he was two months old. They have been amazingly patient with us and our questions. Last Saturday , Augustus developed a rash and I became very concerned. I called the clinic and they let me email photos, called me back by end of day and had some recommendations. A week later, he has nothing. They let me know it was a very busy day as it was a Saturday and one doctor in, but still made time to make me feel better and answer all my questions. I didn't even need to talk to a doctor, Erica took care of showing him photos and talking to him. John took my initial phone call and was very patient as I was very nervous. We have trusted Beckwith with our pets since they were on Maze Blvd. for over 15 years now. Dr. Mike O'Brien is amazing as a doctor and person. During the past year and a half we have suffered tremendous loss and hardship not associated with our animals. Recently I have contacted Beckwith to schedule needed care for our pets and due to a $26 bill they severed their ties with us. Mind you we always pay in full at the time of service. This amount was calculated as an error on their end after we had paid in full. We satisfied this bill on our end but they still are cutting us off. We've always been good for payment. We are small business owners ourselves having worked in Modesto and the surrounding areas for over 20 years. We would never 'sever' ties with our longtime customers. I don't agree with this policy of blacklisting clients. You have our pets lives in your hands. Life happens. Shit happens. We trusted this vet office and in our time of need they slammed the door in our face. One of our dogs had seizures recently and I trusted them to help us. . I used to go to the branch on maze, had a tumor for my pup removed there. Once they closed we started going to this location. Peter (my pup) had a tumor removed at this location about 3 years ago too. Successful surgery. The nurses and doctors were SO nice. I live in San Jose and have continued going to this vet throughout Peter's life, because I've had great experience. Just recently he started having seizures. So I have been taking him in for check ups. They put him on a medication, and thankfully his seizures have stopped. As I call to refill his prescription, the nurse informs me he needs blood work to make sure the medication is right, and that he is getting the right amount. We schedule the appointment, which is perfect because he is almost out of his prescription. (So I can do this all in one trip) We get to his appointment and see the nurse, the nurse asks when the last time he had the medication, which was the night prior because that was the end of what we had. So they took him and did blood work. After she brings him back she explains to me it the results might not come back clear because he didnt have his prescription today... so we might do it again in a month. I'm kind of disappointed they didnt explain this to me before they did the bloodwork...... I go to the cashier to pay, the new nurse ringing me up, gives me the medication and explains to me, Peter needs to take his medication 4-6 hours prior to the appointment so that we can have clear bloodwork results, and they will need to do the bloodwork again in a month. So after this, I'm upset, and feel used/ taken advantage of. We went through with bloodwork when it was unnecessary, when they knew the bloodwork wouldnt come back accurate. Not only did they waste our time, money, and are putting my dog through more uncomfortable experiences. I went back to complain, the nurse that did the blood work explained the vet still wanted to do the blood work and understood why I was upset, explained to me the nurse that set up the appointment should have explained this to me on the phone and that he should have aknown we were going to be out of the prescription based on Peter's file. She did explain to me she would talk to that nurse. Thankfully the doctor called me the next day. She explained Peter's levels were fine on the medication, and that he doesn't need to be tested again, thankfully. This whole miscommunication was such a huge headache. Ive been taking my cat here for a couple of years for a routine check up, and to include I don't live in the Salida area. After my last visit, it sure will be the last. The only thing I was able to receive from the check up was her weight, because she scratched Michael O'Brien once on the hand and he stated he could not do a full check up on her. She was anxious and the way he handled her did not help whatsoever either. 95% of the time also was him talking about some story trailing off about marine biology and sea otters, the 5% was him talking to me like I'm a 10 year old with a new pet. Therefore, I spent full price just to hear him talk nonsense and only to get her weight. You'd figure a vet knows how to handle a frightened pet, but clearly not. He then proceeded to talk down to me like I was stupid. He told me I should neuter my pet because of cancer and then went off on a tangent. Dr. Michael O'Brien actually told me to take my pet to another vet. My family has been with the O'Brien's for over 30 yrs and I never expected to be treated or talked to like that. He did nothing for my pet and pretty much walked out the door leaving me puzzled, hurt and extremely upset...not only for the treatment of my family member whom I entrust them to but also the way I was treated and spoken to. Took my puppy doberman after buying him from a breeder that didn't take care of his ears well, Mike Obrien help him fixed his ears up. They are very caring here. Mike genuinely cares for the animals he works with. Also had my old dog put to rest here and they are very caring. I just love this vet I always recommend them to people. Only down side if you're new you gotta wait 2 weeks so I'd get at least in their books. read more
