I took my dog in and I told them that he wasn't eating and his urine was full of blood for two days. They gave me the list of things they wanted to do and came back with an estimate for $1,400. I agree to do some of procedures and medications came out $728 and at the end they told me he has bladder cancer and there is nothing I or they can save him. I wish they could have told me upfront and why do they offer medications if nothing they can do to save him. I am very disappointed and I have to put him down next day. read more

I didn't want my dog taken out of the room for a blood test. I was informed that this would be done THIS time but "THEIR protocol is to take the animal out of the room and do it elsewhere." MY protocol is to not upset my animal anymore than it already is and to feel that it is protected with me being there. I could understand if it were an animal that is known to bite or be difficult but my animal is not. I said that I would not be back and I was told that was FINE but it was THEIR protocol. The original vet has retired. Just FYI. Tech made a mistake and blamed my animal. I believe that's why they take out, so you don't know what they did. Retired vet tech here. Obviously NOT returning. I have a bunny and I called about getting vaccines. I paid $170 (upfront) for my indoor bunny to get vaccines and no one told me there would be additional vaccines needed. Once the first set of vaccines were done and I was about to head home they told me they'll be another round of vaccines necessary for the same price with another doctors visit even though my bunny had just seen the vet. The second set of vaccines would be three weeks later. When I've had to have vaccines at other offices I have never had to pay for another doctor's visit especially when the doctor gave an exam to my bunny within the month. This seemed like a huge money grab and this was my first time at this office. I don't ever plan to come back. The staff didn't seem particularly nice, I didn't even get to ask the vet questions about my bunny's health. Way overpriced and the quality of care was not there. read more

I've taken my dogs to several different vets in Modesto over the past 20 years. Was very happy with Sylvan vet until my dog needed dental work. Sylvan's estimate was shockingly high. Got a second opinion from Dr. Kahler. The estimate was much more reasonable. Turns out an extraction was required. The total was still less than expected. VMA has been my regular vet since then. Both Dr. Kahler and Dr. Wert have been exceptional. My parents have used VMA for years. Their dachshund developed a back problem last week. VMA squeezed her into the schedule yesterday, identified the problem and started her on meds. It wasn't cheap, but was about $300 less than we might have paid elsewhere, and Lily is back to her old self today. read more

First off, the office staff and assistants are amazing. We always have seen Dr. Wert, but, unfortunately, she is (on leave), or was smart to leave. We had an appointment on Monday, May 10th, showed up on time and waited 1/2 hour to be seen. Dr. Kahler, stormed into the room, causing our dog to be startled, and in return, he started barking. Our dog, is a big boy, but, a HUGE teddy bear that everyone LOVES. Dr. Kahler rudely asked his assistant to get a Fuxxing muzzle, in which my husband responded that he was not going to put a muzzle on our dog. Apparently words were exchanged and NOT in a professional manner. The "F" word is no word for a professional to use. We felt that the last visit we had with Dr. Kahler, we were charged an outrageous amount, but, wanted our dog to feel better. We never got results on all the testing we paid for. Today, in the mail, we received a letter stating Veterinary Medical Associates was no longer going to treat our dog. Well, let me tell you something....YOU, DR. KAHLER, are no longer going to treat OUR dog, and that decision was made for us last Monday! I suggest you rethink your profession, because you do not have the temperament to treat our animals like family. Dr. Wert had all those specialties. Very disappointed. Our dog was severely injured in her eye, Took her to the ER over the weekend, spending $300 just to leave with a note that she needs surgery and some pain pills. Called here to get an estimate, and they will not tell me the price for a procedure without another visit, and another exam fee. Low income. Disabled. I need all the money for surgery. I just want to know if they will charge less than the expensive emergency vet. I have a group helping me, but I cannot even get the estimate I need. Such a shame. When we first got a puppy, we took him for Dr. K for a physical exam. He didn't give us opportunities to ask questions or asked us about how our puppy was doing. He basically just feel around the puppy for 5 minutes, and we didn't even know he was examining the puppy. That's already $60. Then we tried to obtain the visit summary because we have insurance and wants it as a record. The office refused to provide that in the beginning, until we showed them notes from the Vet Board that it is our rights to get the record of our pet. After that, we got the record, and the visit summary only say "nice puppy" without other comments or note about the dog's overall health in details. It was a frustrating experience for us, and we didn't want to go back again. read more

VMA has helped my dog Shadow tremendously. The first visit we saw Dr.Khaler. My dog had injured his ear and Dr. Khaler almost knew what the issue was. With a quick lab work to see if the wound was infected he prescribed medication, cleaned the wound and gave us clear instruction on how to treat his wound in his ear. Within 2 to 3 weeks my dogs ear was good as new. Fast forward to this week and I had to take Shadow in again, hes 10 years old now so its getting harder for him to get up and his hips arent as forgiving as they used to be. Due to covid we had to wait while the doctor looked at shadow inside (sorry forgot the doctors name). The doctor came out and told us that it seems like Shadow has some arthritis going on but would need to do x-rays to determine there arent any other issues. She gave us a few options but wasnt trying to "sell us" which made it better because I can see they care. I took the option where we just take the meds for pain and monitor how he does. Shadow seems to be doing fine now, looks more energetic and doesnt struggle much to get up from laying down. I really do love this spot! Staff was so sweet and caring for my little bean boy and very thorough and explained everything. It is an emergency clinic, so hence why it'll be more expensive but tbh, everywhere else is booked for months so if you're in need like how I was, I'd recommend. My poor kitty had an injury and infection on his foot and they took care of him. He usually hates vets, but he was tame at the place and after(maybe it was kitty magic). Took my rabbit for the common snuffles was forced to spend thousands of dollars on lab exams for them to come up with the same conclusion. When given medication nurses did not explain well how to administer medication. And to top it all off after going to the vet for the same issue 3 TIMES my rabbit still continued to have snuffles... I agree with the other reviews the veterinarians aren't great at explaining what is going on with your pet and expect you to pay 80 dollars just for your pet to LITERALLY visit the place...Also they don't know how to handle rabbits who may be skittish :/ . It is unfortunate that this is one of the few rabbit vets in the Central Valley! I highly recommend rabbit owners to save their money and drive a little farther to get great rabbit vet care. After struggling for so long to find a knowledgeable and compassionate vet clinic for my rabbit, I am so pleased to have met Dr. Kahler and the rest of the staff at VMA. My rabbit, Biscuit, needed to have one of her eyes removed and they were able to spay her also while she was under anesthesia. Surgery went great and she healed up quickly. I am so thankful I found this office for my White's Tree Frog, Ducky. If you are in Modesto or the surrounding area (like me), it is well worth the drive to receive outstanding care for your animal. I recently acquired my little frog from a pet store and realized that something was wrong due to her abnormal stool. I was nervous to take her to the vet because she is so tiny and fragile but this office immediately made me feel comfortable. Dr. Kahler and his entire team at Veterinary Medical Associates are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He explained the options we had for Sugar, our Syrian hamster, in a way that was easy to understand when we brought her in for respiratory problems. Sugar was part of our family so understanding what was best for her was important. I called several vets in the area, but they didn't take care of small animals like Sugar. I called another facility, but had to wait 5 days to get an appointment! She needed care now and 5 days was too long to wait. Finally, I called PetSmart and asked for a recommendation and the gal I spoke with suggested VMA since they took their hamsters there when they're sick. A few days after my visit, we received a hand written letter in the mail signed by the entire staff welcoming us. *update* was told by VMA that the blade they used was "faulty", I have years and years of trained professional experience and even if the blade they used was "faulty" this should have been something they noticed before using it on another living creature. But for the record, that's not the case and we all know that. Also after being told that they wouldn't know for sure if the tumor was cancerous or not until they did the surgery now they tell me that it IS IN FACT CANCEROUS! If I knew that from the start I never would have pursued surgery. Means they just wanted to do the surgery for the money. Not only that but they lied in their response to me saying they offered many payment options. I was offered NONE. And honestly, there are other options to offer an old dog in his last days but they did not care enough. He is still alive and doing well on a holistic and herbal routine. It's sad that if you opt out of surgery then they basically tell you that your dog is dead. They clipper burned and cut my dogs belly when they shaved him for the ultrasound. This is actually harder to do than to not do. I am a professional dog groomer, and i personally know this is the pure result of NO TRAINING, and lack of care or professionalism for animals. The nurse brought out my baby who had already been through enough already, and said his skin was "irritated", because he has "sensitive" skin. I've groomed my dogs and this one especially his whole life and NEVER, not once have I hurt him or cut him like that as well as have I never had this happen in my grooming career of 6 plus years. A small cut somewhere or irritation is expected sometimes but not this. It looked like they just took a razor and scraped him up and down over and over again. So after paying over $600 for them to cut my dog, they tell me he needs a surgery for another $3,000 and that if he dont get it he can bleed out at any moment. I explained that that amount of money is hard to just come up with at the drop of a hat and asked if I could put at least half of it down and pay the rest within the week. They said no. They didn't offer any alternatives or suggestions just simply said he needed it or he would die. I then acquired the funds for surgery but the fact that they showed no compassion and hurt my dog in the process put me off. As well as the fact after several days of asking to see the xrays and tests and ultrasounds I paid for, they kept putting it off and tHen denied letting me come back to see them in person. I eventually and finally got an email with a picture of them through the computer which I'm not a vet so I have no idea what I I'm looking at. My dogs life could end any day and they couldnt even offer an alternative method or treatment or even just pain meds for when he needs them. They didn't even offer a kind word or support just kept pushing the surgery on me like it was a do now or die now situation. This clinic is over priced, staff is not trained properly, and the lack of communication and compassion is just outstanding. I have been a client here and taken my other pets here as well as recommended many many clients and their pets here but I seriously regret that. read more

I took my 7 month old pet duck here for the very first time because he has not been feeling well and not eating for two days prior to taking him to this place. First night he spent there, I called every 2 hours to check up on him and see how he was doing. Constantly staying on top of updates and analysis. Second day, they informed me that my duckling would need an x-ray and some anti inflammatory medication to help him with some neurological pain that was claimed by the doctor. And they suggested to keep my duckling one more night. BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. My duckling passed away that late 'evening' and the doctor called me the next morning to tell me the bad news. Apparently my duckling had a seizure and it was so bad that it took his life away. I have paid $600 to ensure that they will stay on top of things and keep my duckling safe and to treat him accordingly. I highly doubt that my duckling was even fed anything or given any water to drink! I regret giving my baby to this place because they killed him by neglecting my duckling and by failing to do their job accordingly. Given the fact that my duckling passed away that late evening, they FAILED to call me and inform me about it right away. They called me the NEXT MORNING to tell me the bad news. I honestly don't think they have a genuine heart. How could they have done this to me and to my Henry (duckling). Now I carried my Henry's body in my arms and buried him. How was I supposed to know that bringing my Henry here to seek for some help, would end up bringing his body back. They have neglected him and failed miserably. May God rest his beautiful soul, I honestly regret taking my Henry here. I made the biggest mistake of my life. read more

The best way I would describe VMA is negligent! About a week ago one of our ducks started to have strange behavior, so as a precaution we brought him here for an exam. The doctors recommended that he stay overnight and we would be charged almost $500 dollars. The next day another night of observation was required, however; due to their negligence he passed away sometime during that evening. Prior to this we had spoken to the office throughout the day and we were assured that he was fine and was doing well. I received a brief phone call the next morning, and I was only given vague details about what went wrong. It seemed clear that they were unsure of what went wrong because of their overwhelming incompetence. If you are a pet owner and you really care about your animals, and you want a professional service, find another veterinarian. I paid $600 for them to kill our duck. read more

I spoke of the abuse and neglect to dr Kahler multiple times - including the fact that my dog was covered in his own urine when I picked him up. He seemed appalled but didn't offer any condolences - tried to hide it. I have multiple witnesses to this. I left messages. I even requested video of your office to see when that happened. Please be aware that if there is video of my dog in your office, I have NO DOUBT that your office would be shut down for neglect of animals. My dog is now going through another ACL procedure because the first surgery was NOT SUCCESSFUL and I will have to redo the surgery that Dr. kahler did. So now because of the poor job done by Kahler, my dog will suffer through a third ACL procedure. The first was the one he did, now I have to do the left because the right wasn't stable to support, and I will have to redo his right that Kahler did. KAHLER IS NOT BOARD CERTIFIED. HE LIED TO ME. Right before I was planning to leave town for a girls' trip, my kitty got sick and coughed all night. Because I was new to the area, I asked for referrals from local friends, but I was disappointed that nobody could fit us in. I didn't want our cat to suffer for days while we waited for an open appointment. So, in desperation, I turned to Yelp to help me find a local vet. I did notice that there were a couple bad reviews here, but most of them seemed to be talking about the same duckling incident. I decided to give VMA a try. Boy! Am I ever glad I did! Sheryl, the office manager, squeezed us in right away. She arranged for me to drop off our cat so that Dr. Wert could examine him in between other appointments. Dr. Wert then called us to talk about treatment options (he had a kitty cold), and my husband was able to pick him up when they were all done. I was impressed that Dr. Wert spent a lot of time with us on the phone, both when she talked to us about treatments that day, AND a week later when I had questions about our other pets. Dr. Wert really cares about her patients (and their humans). I was also very grateful that they cared enough to squeeze us in RIGHT AWAY, rather than leaving our cat to suffer for days because their calendar was full. I brought my pet rat in months ago when one of her eyes had turned red and had filled with blood. I was concerned about the care my pet would receive, being that she's a rat and I could not find any other veterinarians in Stanislaus county that claimed they specialized in small animals like rats or rabbits, etc. Walking in, I got a great first impression. The woman at the counter was genuinely friendly and kind and made me feel comfortable right away. I loved the set up of the place. It's clean, charming. They have a television that plays an ongoing PowerPoint filled with helpful information regarding all kinds of different animals. They were pretty busy that afternoon. The waiting room was full, but I didn't have to wait longer than 20 minutes to have my rattie seen. When taken back, both the assistant and the vet were so sweet with my rat. Rats are generally met with a "eww!!!" and "gross, get that away from me!!" They immediately snuggled her and after examining her, told me that she needed three different meds. I asked how much the meds would cost and it was more than I could afford that day (it was Wednesday and I got paid that Friday). I let them know that and they offered to give me small portions of the meds to put me in a range I could afford that day and I could pick up the rest on my payday. Perfect! The vet, who had rats as pets in her past, was very knowledgable about rats. She let me know right away that my rattie would likely have to have her eye removed if the medication didn't help. She assured me that because rats are dependent more on scent than sight, having one eye would truly not be as bad as it sounded. Thankfully though, after diligently giving my rattie her meds for a week, I was sooo pleased that her eye completely cleared up!!! And within that week of giving her the meds, the office had called me to check on her and make sure I was doing fine with administering her meds. When I took her back for her follow up, the staff was excited to see her and were equally as pleased that her eye had cleared. The vet confirmed that her eye was fully healed and said we were good to go! Not more than a couple weeks later, we received a card in the mail from the vet saying how much she loved being able to help our little rattie. It was so kind, I kept the card. I truly could not have asked for a better experience at a veterinary office, especially with a pet that was not common to care for. I absolutely recommend this office, to anyone.
