Ordered the Cattlemans burger Medium rare. It came out GREY, the whole burger. The bottom bun was as wet as a sponge/soggy, 1/4" thick. The fries were hot and crispy. Beef House (hereinafter referred to as "this place") is a classic. It's been around since the early 50's, and it would seem that many of the regular clientele have been coming to Beef House since then! And that's not without several good reasons. My good friend Ples and I first hit this place a couple of months ago after our regular Friday night skate over at White Rock Skate Center. We were looking for a good substitute for our usual post-skate IHOP haunt, which is a bit farther away in Richardson. He had a vague recollection of some 24/7/365 place in Garland and we started checking Google. The rest is history. The first time we walked into this place, the regulars sitting at other tables started talking to us and asking us about ourselves. We immediately felt like we were in a very unique situation and had made a bunch of new friends just by virtue of our having discovered this place. We got pretty lucky our first time, too, considering that Havan, our waitress, was there late at night only as a fluke. She is usually there only during days. The level of service and the friendly attitude of this lady are unparalleled at just about any other restaurant I have ever populated. If you have a favorite sister who thinks you are the best sibling in the world, that's what it was like having her as our waitress. Another huge point in favor! Coming in the front door, we saw a sign for the "Manager's Special". $9.99 for a steak and two sides. I knew that I'd be getting the Manager's Special that night. You have a choice of rib eye, T-bone or New York strip. I am a consummate rib eye man, so that's what I ordered. RARE! My two sides were hash browns and a side salad. They don't do fountain drinks here. You get sodie pop by the can. Or you get water, iced tea, coffee or hot chocolate... standard diner fare. So I typically get tea for the free refillability factor. That's important after a hard roller skate, because I am always very thirsty and can completely chug whatever it is I'm drinking for the next two hours. Then there are rolls, cornbread or biscuits for your bread. The food is great and never frozen, and in many cases is made from scratch. Yet another point. An internet-based jukebox sits in one corner and plays anything from 70's classic rock hits to country. The specials of the day are displayed on large signs over the back counter. The place is decorated with a hodgepodge of items that have been collecting over the decades. One thing you really need to know about this place... it's smoker friendly!! Now, I'm not a smoker; never have been. Do I enjoy the fact that you can go to Dallas restaurants and bars and not have to gag all night, and then come out smelling like hell? YES! BUT... at the same time, I am a freedom-minded individual. I believe in the right of businesses to determine whether they will allow smoking or not. If you don't like smoking, then you don't go to that business, right? Fair enough! So Beef House takes you back in time to when this was the rule. It's usually not too smoky in here, and even if it is, I'm willing to tolerate it because I'm not a big wuss! Ples IS a smoker, so he can enjoy having a smoke with his meal at this place while everywhere else he is treated like a pariah. Score another point for liberty! By the way, they DO have a non-smoking section as required by law in Garland. That section consists of one tiny table and a pair of chairs in the entrance airlock! While it's very comical, it satisfies their legal requirement, and yet another sign on the door declares this to be the case. Just another unique aspect of this place. In summing up, I've been to Beef House at least a dozen times since discovering it. I always get the same order. We have met about 5 different waitresses and know them by name. I was there with my good friend and choir director JoyfulUnit one day. Havan was our waitress. JU had a broken wrist and thus was immobilized by a partial arm cast. Havan actually cut up her steak and fed it to her! It was the most hilarious thing I've ever seen. I don't think I have seen that anywhere else. I have pictures of this which you can see here. Ever since then, I have referred to Havan as the Mom of Waitresses. She really loves what she does and she loves the customers. Everyone at Beef House loves being there. Usually, there's loud laughter and conversation going on at many of the tables, so you can cut loose and really be yourself there, even if you are obnoxious. :-) When we walk in, we shout out a hello to everyone, and when we walk out, we shout out a goodbye. The shouts are returned in both cases because everyone is so friendly. Now, don't get me wrong, this place doesn't get 5 stars because it's swanky. The beef house has been around for a long time, "Possibly before the 1940's" The food here is good and home cooked. They are open 24/7. 5 or 7 days a week they have a special. Thursday is all you can eat Enchiladas and Friday/Sat is all you can eat Fish. Also on some certain days they have Spaghetti , Fried chicken, and Beef Tacos which are my favorite. I have tried nearly everything and my favorite thing for Breakfast is the Albert Special which is hash-browns, eggs, and sausage or bacon and then you have tortillas to make tacos of it. Mother's liver and onions was way overcooked so dry and tough, Girlfriends Fried Porkchops were also overcooked and dry and tough. My chicken fried steak was a pre breaded cutlet so so-so. Green Beans were good Rolls were good Mash pot so-so I was visiting mom from out of town and trying to get her something she liked and had not had in a long time So I drove from Lake Highlands several miles. Going down hill fast!!! I've been eating at beef house for nearly 20 years. I used to happily tell people it was the best unknown restaurant in the area. I would drive nearly 30 minutes just to eat here. But now on top of prices always going up the quality continues to drop. And I'm on the verge of simply not coming back! One of the best items on the menu and what I got probably 70% of the time I came here was the full Albert. Huge yummy pile of cheesy goodness consisting of hash browns, eggs, sausage and lots of cheese. It was served with tortillas and house made hot sauce. Recently the smaller half Albert was removed from the menu. Then I was told the weekend cook would not make it any more. I've made it in on a weekday twice now and now ask what is the point in coming any more. My Albert was terrible both times. Gross dry hash browns, maybe half the egg I used to get and virtually no cheese. The first time I sent it back twice before came out close to what it was 8 months or so ago. And was accompanied by loud yelling by the cook. This time I did not even bother sending it back. I did not feel like listening to a raging cook again. Well I've had several visits to Beef House after covid-19 quarantine let up a little bit and the food is every bit as good as it ever is. I would also like to thank the waitresses staff and owner for their generous hospitality. Years ago when I started going there I was struggling with major illness and the management understood if I told them I simply must leave for a minute and come home and I will come back and get my order when I am not in pain. They never gave me crap about it or acted like I was a criminal or was trying to walk out of my order. The day my great aunt died I ate there with my mother and cousin and we had delicious catfish of course my cousin ordered the chicken fried steak we are food loving people much to my mother's disdain who is still on a diet even though she is 80 years old. The comment my mother made to me on the way to the funeral was I'm so glad you have a place like this to eat in your neighborhood and I feel exactly the same way. Are you still only order the steak and eggs but lately I've just been eating the eggs and toast because that's all I can eat and I definitely cannot finish their generous portion of hash browns the last time I had a first date that is where we went I took some delicious chicken and dumplings to go and had a BLT delicious my day had the hamburger and even though he was a larger man he couldn't even finish it much less his french fries haha but it wasn't because of the lack of deliciousness it was because of the large portions I would recommend be fast to anyone who wants to feel comfortable and eat good food. Okay... Fair warning. Expect a lot of cigarette smoke. The "non smoking table" is in the foyer, and I'm convinced it's there simply for decor. I'm a non smoker, but used to smoke, and spent my share of time in bars and clubs in my 20s, so smoke doesn't bother me as much as it would bother someone who has never smoked. Take a fresh shirt with you to change into afterwards if you don't want to smell like a bar. I'm also basing my rating on what it is - it's a diner, not a high end steakhouse! Outside of that... The food was very good, especially for the price. If you get the Albert Special, bring a small army with you to help eat it, it's a ton of food. Or plan on taking 3 or 4 meals worth of leftovers home. Service was what you would expect in a diner, maybe a little friendlier. My waitress was on point with refills, otherwise unobtrusive. She was on a first name basis with many customers in there. Short version is food and selection was a lot better than I expected. Service was a bit better than expected. This place has been a coffee shop/restaurant for nearly fifty years, even though the name and ownership has changed a time or two over the years. In the 60's one of my friends had a newspaper route and we used to assemble the Sunday papers for delivery on the sidewalk in front of this restaurant. At 6am! The food is standard Texas coffee shop fare: steaks, chicken fried steak, burgers, sandwiches, overcooked veggies, etc.. Nothing particularly stands out above the rest as exceptional, but everything I've tried was above average. There are signs proclaiming non-smoking, but they lie. Walking in, I immediately noticed the handwritten menu of the day...neat! I really try to avoid sitting in smoking areas or going to resturants where smoking is heavy. The walls/wallpaper was yellowish, I can't say it's because of the tar or because that is they it's supposed to look. Food is good, fair priced, and there's a lot of it. You shouldn't be hungry after a meal here. A lot of posts talked about the smoke, but I didn't have any issue. I showed up after work around 3:30am and there was only 1 other table, and the smoke wasn't a problem at all. If it was packed and people were smoking, I could definitely see that there may be an issue. The waitress was extremely personable and I found myself hanging around longer just because we were having a good conversation. Don't let the looks of this place fool you. It looks run down with rips in the booths and being a hole in the wall. But once you sit down ...you feel right at home. The Servers are very friendly and helpful with answering any questions you may have along with telling you about their Weekly Specials. We went on a Saturday and their Special was Endless Catfish that comes with 2 sides. It was SO good! Not only was the Catfish Endless but so were the sides. I'll be back to try even more things on their menu! While sitting there you'll notice that you'll be surrounded by regulars that by listening to their conversations must have been going there for years on end. I can see why! Its an old time hole in the wall with regular customers who have been eating there for MANY, MANY years. Daily lunch and dinner specials, great fried catfish on Friday and Saturday. They have a long list of side dishes, and add 2 others each day of the week for variety. Prices are reasonable, waitresses are the bomb. I am a little hesitant to post this review because I like to keep places like this secret. Reason being it is VERY GOOD!! The reviews were very positive and spot on. The place is a complete hole in the wall that looks to have never been updated. I have zero problem with this as long as the food is good and the service is friendly. Check and check. Not to mention it is very reasonably priced. I came in on a Friday for lunch as I had a hankerin' for some fried catfish, which was the special of the day. It was perfect and quick too! The sides were lima beans and okra as the vegs of the day. Okra was ok, but the lima beans were out of sight! They offer all you can eat catfish after 5 on Fridays too. It's open 24-7 so I bet this place is awesome for a late night feast after bar hopping. I will definitely be back. read more

Well out of curiosity I visited the Beef House. I was surprised, its pretty darn good. The only person that I saw smoking while I was there was my waitress. The smell of smoke was there but not overpowering. I had the Cattleman's hamburger that was well prepared. The French fries were skin on and quite good. Ice tea was fresh brewed and refilled often. The local decor featured among other things a collection of law enforcement patches. Along with this and the down home manner of the staff I was very comfortably reminded that I was home in Texas. Also tried the chocolate pie. On return I will try the other dessert selections. Obviously there were a lot of regulars here that were happy with this restaurant. This place is completely unique. It is exactly what is, an old fashioned divey diner straight out of old Garland. And in old Garland. Like Cheers, everyone knows everyone and a couple of folks received phone calls at the restaurant. I went on Catfish Special Day, and I was really glad. The fish was good, after so many years, they have mashed potatoes down to an art. The place is old, but clean. Service was great, experience is everything. This is an "everybody knows everybody" kind of place. My family has been coming here regularly for 3 generations. So a little something on service : the waitresses are pretty much all accommodating, attentive, and personable. The Albert's Special (eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, tomato, onion, and cheese served with tortillas and salsa) is amazing but unless you are a competitive eater I would order the half Albert. The salsa is also really amazing. Overall: It's a greasy spoon. Come here when you want corn muffins, greasy breakfast food, and salads made with iceberg lettuce. Not when you want upscale...but it is still delicious, the people are great, and the prices are affordable. Do they allow smoking? Yes. In fact I would say they go so far as to encourage it. As business owners they have made that choice and they are pretty upfront about it. I'll come back next time I got out to eat without my toddler.
