I was so excited to try this diner in the most beautiful hotel. I have seen in a long time. The description says it's 1940s style and it really looks like it's out of a movie set. They have indoor and outdoor seating by the pool. It was a hot day so we sat inside and it was also much quieter inside There were not too many other customers while we were there, and I have to say the only downside is the service is really slow and you have to flag down the staff repeatedly even to get your water refilled. Basically once you order, they don't check back in on you much. However, I have zero notes about the food taste, and quality. We shared a patty melt sandwich and ordered an extra set of onion rings. The onion rings were absolutely perfect. They came out hot and crispy without too much better and with the perfect ratio of onion taste. The patty melt was also perfect and really enjoyed the pickle on the side. The dish came with a house made ranch, which was not too thick and very fresh and herbal tasting. I loved it. I also ordered a latte and while the latte foam wasn't the most beautiful thing I have seen, it was very well-made and tasty. The uniforms and the table where all are custom-made for the hotel and diner. The style was very cool. I would totally return anytime. I am back in town
This visit wasn't as glamorous and awesome as the first visit. We decided to come here during Father's Day weekend to enjoy a meal together as a family. The place was packed and there were so many people in and out of the Lafayette hotel, as usual. This was a late night dinner so I believe we arrived around 8:30 PM. We were seated right away, which we were really happy about. Every time we come the host that sees us is very nice and customer service oriented. Our server was very nice. We ordered the deviled eggs for the table to share. We also ordered Patty Melts and shakes. I ordered onion rings for my side to my Patty Melt and everyone else got the side of fries. The deviled eggs is a super Duper tiny appetizer. The highlight is that it comes with salmon roll on top which are delicious. Our food came out and I will say that it just tasted OK this time. The patties in the patty melt were undercooked (they looked gray colored not brown) and didn't have as much flavor as they normally do. My onion rings were decent, but they just weren't fried correctly because a lot of them were stuck together. The shakes were the highlight of the meal as they tasted delicious and we enjoyed them. Customer service is always great. It's just that, on this night, the food wasn't as tasty as it was the first time. We hope that the food gets back to the great taste that it used to have soon.
I'm still dreaming about the banana bread pudding french toast. That's kind of all I can really remember about my dining experience. I was really excited for the boozy milkshake but I think the booze flavor was a bit strong for me (I am quite sensitive to it). I heard excellent things about the country fried steak and the french dip sandwich from my dining companions. Super cool location in the Lafayette Hotel, the wait was a little long but manageable and worth it in my opinion.
Beginner's Diner is a retro-styled diner with a modern twist. The establishment offers comforting food, friendly service, and unique ambiance; all adding to a nice experience out. Their menu is filled with classic diner foods, but might be a tad different than what you'd expect. I got the BISCUITS AND GRAVY, and though it was good it was different than the usual. Instead of biscuits, it was more of a monkey bread and the meat in the gravy had more of a smokey taste (it could also use extra gravy over all). Their BLOODY MARY was good, not a huge standout but overall had a classic Bloody Mary taste. I'd like to return for another breakfast item, or perhaps a late night bite.
I ate twice at Beginner's Diner during my one night stay at the Lafayette Hotel back in December. It's open 24 hours and so convenient, especially since the hotel doesn't offer room service. I had a late lunch after I landed in San Diego while waiting for my room to be ready. I sat at the bar and ordered a mushroom hash. It was delicious and exactly what I needed at the time. My teammates and I went back to Lafayette Hotel to celebrate after a big, successful event. We didn't have much to eat at the event and were pretty hungry so we hit up Beginner's Diner. We shared a French toast and I opted for a tuna melt with side of fries for my entree. Both were filling and hit the spot! The diner has a great vibe and service was excellent both times!
Cute old diner inside of the Lafayette Hotel. Diner Menu offered a good variety. We went for dinner so ended up trying the pot roast, chicken fried steak, and patty melt. Their fries and onion rings were also fried to a golden crisp. Service was great. I love that they wear the traditional diner uniforms. Overall great vibes
We pulled up around 1:30 AM on Monday night, and honestly, we were expecting standard late-night diner vibes. Instead, we witnessed a full-blown culinary performance. The place was quiet, but we immediately spotted a guy in the back with long hair who was straight-up making love to the food. Man was jumping all over the kitchen, single-handedly running the show, and still managed to hit us with the biggest, warmest smile. We literally couldn't stop watching him work. We ordered the Avocado Benedict and the Steak with Sunny-Side Up Eggs. We've been here before, but whatever magic he was putting into the food that night made it hit totally different. The steak came out a flawless medium-rare, and the eggs were executed with surgical precision: egg whites fully cooked, yolk warm and perfectly runny--exactly how I like it. Everything arrived in a mind-blowing 8 or 9 minutes.
Beginners Diner is located inside the Lafayette Hotel. I've heard such amazing things about the ambiance of the place and had to check it out. The first thing I will note is that on Fridays & Saturdays the street parking will be very difficult. There is valet as an option, for those who don't want valet you will need to park street in the neighborhoods behind the hotel. Upon walking in, we were greated by the hostess who sat us down and we ordered a good amount of appetizers, sides, entrees, and drinks. To our disappointment, the food honestly wasn't that great considering the price of each item. The best item I think we ordered was the Caesar Salad - probably one of the best dressings ive had. The egg on my chicken sandwich was a little rubbery in texture and the chicken was good but very dry. Chicken skewers were very good but the rest of the food was nothing special. I think this place is really good for the ambiance - if you're planning on wanting a diner feel I would recommend coming here for the milkshakes but not for an entire meal. Another thing that added to my 2 star review was at the end of the dinner my friend noticed she stepped on something squishy at the bottom of the table. We looked under the booth and there was a single slice of bread just sitting there. I added a picture but what my friend pointed out was that toast is a breakfast menu item. We were there at 6:30pm and their breakfast menu stopped being served at 3pm. With that being said - the booth floor had not been cleaned since then. Overall I would not come back again. I was a little disappointed due to the quality of the food and lack of cleanliness of the restaurant. However, the Lafayette Hotel is beautiful
Beginner's Diner, located in the infamous The Lafayette Hotel inEl Cajon is open 24-hours and hits all the marks you'd expect for a retro diner from the 1940's, while adding some upscale twists to their menu such as their steak and eggs served with a Wagyu filet and boozy milkshakes. We recommend going around the holidays which is extra special since the property is completely transformed into a winter wonderland ! I was looking forward to trying their French Dip (also made with Waygu), but they were out of it so I opted for their version of a smash-burger. It was okay, but not what you'd expect from a smash-burger since the two patties were on the thicker side and the bread was sourdough toast (not my favorite for a burger). Although they don't have a kids menu, our server was able to provide some suggestions on some options that would be good for kids (both on and off the menu). Came to Beginner's Diner on a Tuesday at 12:30pm and were shocked to see an hour+ long wait to sit at the counter. The hubby and I ordered coffee, buckwheat pancakes, a cinnamon roll, and the breakfast sando to share. The breakfast sandwich was great, piping hot, salty from the cheese, fatty from the homemade breakfast sausage, and nice with the eggs inside. The cinnamon roll was our next favorite because it wasn't overly sweet, rich from the cream cheese frosting, and very naughty. Last was the buckwheat pancakes which were very dense but tasted good since they were very thing and were cut with the fresh berries. Breakfast is only served from midnight to 3pm which is why we went for lunch, just in case we wanted sweet and savory without having to order a shake. As always, the service is great and the Lafayette is a beautiful hotel with solid options for food and drinks.
You know when you have the insane desire for a super solid, totally fire breakie? Like.... The one you think you remember from lifetimes past? But every time you follow a solid Yelp review your stomach ends up hurting and the food is just super mid? As if "super greasy and average" became the new "hit food?" Well- NOT this place. This place is "forget your words, mind blowing, borderline orgasmic" kind of fantastic. It's a worth its wait kind of diner. All nestled in the most fantastic hotel in SD. Go. Don't think. Just..,, go. You will never feel like you're in a cooler place than when you are here.
We were staying at The Lafayette Hotel and wanted to grab dinner downstairs at Beginner's Diner. Was hoping they offered breakfast options all day but they only offer it from 12am-3pm. We wanted to try the Reuben but they were out. Noticed a few other people trying to order it as well, but to no avail. We ended up ordering the dinner portion Chicken Fried Steak w/ creamed spinach ($32) and the dinner Pot Roast w/ sautéed corn ($34). Both were solid options, nothing to write home about, and on the smaller side. We also got a Chocolate Hazelnut Boozy Milkshake ($18). This was delicious and got me buzzed. Service was friendly. Cool diner interior with so many eye-catching details. Bathrooms are located outside of the diner, across the bar, and at the hallway near the pool. Will definitely need to try the Reuben sandwich next time though! And also the breakfast options.
The Lafayette was so packed this time of the year because of the amazing decorating, so we found a spot at the bar in this joint u til we could scope out a table in the lounge. Started out with a craft cocktail for my Bride and a private labeled IPA for me. Opted to split the pimento cheese, and liked everything! Ambiance is retro diner, service was at the counter, and prices were high but this is clearly a tourist trap!
Excellent service! I love this place! It's open 24/7 and located inside the newly remodeled Lafayette Hotel. We started with coffee, OJ and a Cinnamon roll, then the duck confit, wagu steak and matzo ball soup. All of it was excellent! A word to folks, a lot of the meats here are very rich (can be considered gamey) the inside is so cute. I love all the different plates and the cups, I'd love to buy them. Adorably decorated and very easy to dine in, this is my second time coming and wow I have to say the boozy milkshakes are super good! read more

First thing to know when visiting The Lafayette Hotel/Beginners Diner- this is from the CH Group (Part time lover, Seneca, Morning Glory, Raised by Wolves, Born & Raised, etc). If you are not aware of these- the CH Group creates restaurants/bars that are more of a unique experience from the design of the venues, the menus, the food and especially the drinks. With that being said, the Lafayette Hotel is awesome. Walking in, the atmosphere and designs make it such a unique spot. You can have some delicious cocktails at the bar or head to Beginner's Diner. We came on a Tuesday night and were seated right away. The milkshakes were delicious- better without alcohol but both good. The cocktails were also good (and $2 less than the main hotel bar)- you could also bring drinks from the hotel bar inside if you wanted a diff drink. The food was a 3.7/5- smash burger was delicious and moist and the tots were great. The fried chicken steak was alright and the creamed spinach was really oily. The main thing to know is that this is not a typical diner- it's embodying a typical diner with the "open 24/7" and style of it all, but also being more high-end with boozy milkshakes, fun cocktails and wagyu steak items. With that being said, it is a confusing concept and may be better off without the wagyu steak or $30+ menu items when people not from San Diego think it's a typical diner spot. Overall- if you're checking out the Lafayette Hotel, I'd recommend grabbing a drink at the lobby bar, getting a nice dinner at Quixote or going into the Gutter room for an awesome vibe, cool spot to go with friends, fun/delicious cocktails and (free!!) games - pool, shuffle board, foosball, and more. If you do end up at Beginners Diner, don't divulge on the higher end items- stick with a more simple option or get a breakfast item! read more
I feel like stepping back into the 1950s.. from the doors, chairs, drinking straws and how the servers dress up - I really dig the vibe of this place. Very impressed with the Lafayette renovation - it's quite unique. The only thing that seemed out of place were the county style plates. We went on Labor day and the whole Lafayette was hopping. I'm so in aw on how crazy busy they are - ( so different from the last time we went before its renovation -where it seemed like we were the only guests) In terms of food, I had the patty melt and it's good. I tried a bit of the meatloaf and I think it's ok. read more

I love taking photos of my friends. My friend Vanessa suggested this place. I didn't have any expectations. I loved the decor so much. Everything about this place scream at a movie set. I felt like I was in a movie. The hotel itself was beyond gorgeous. There was a bar inside and outside by the poolside. We did a photoshoot by the poolside. I'll post picture results on here as well. We loved the atmosphere. Everyone seemed so happy to be there. The bar is super busy so don't expect fast service. It was very "what do you want to order and do you need anything else" kind of service. I am not mad about it. It's very busy touristy vibe. Also the food took a while to come so I deduct a star for that. I only order onion rings and it took so long. But the drinks were made at decent time, but there was always a line at the bar. Pricey for just ok food. Located inside the Lafayette hotel, you walk all the way back and to the left to find the entrance. We went on a Saturday at 10am and it wasn't busy at all so we got to sit immediately. They have a mix of booth type seating and bar seating. I got the buckwheat pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. The flavor of the pancakes was good, not too sweet so it was a nice balance with the sweetened whipped cream. Definitely didn't need maple syrup, which they didn't provide anyways. It just didn't have any rise to them. Really flat. I would have preferred something a bit fluffier. Also asked for a cappuccino but they said they could only do more of a flat white. It was neither. It was maybe a 6oz. poorly made latte. Also pretty eye popping price of $6. Service was friendly and quick. Ambiance was definitely a diner vibe if that's your jam. They seemed to also do seating outside with a view of the pool and the cocktail bar. After bringing my Son and his friends to Bowling, I decided to Treat them more and drove to "Beginner's Diner " open 24/7 This Diner is located inside the Lafayette Hotel, the last time we visited Lafayette was a year ago, and it's less crowded, but this time omg I kept bumping into a lot of people shoulder to shoulder as we were walking to Beginner's diner. It's probably 'coz it was a weekend night when we came or this place just got popular. We Checked-in and the receptionist Skylar said that it's a 1 hour wait time, but we were called only after 15 minuites. Skylar was very nice to accomodate my request and make it possible, despite how busy they are. I told her that I wanted to eat at the Bar while my Son and his Friends could sit at a table close to where I was gonna be at the bar, coz I didn't want to sit with the 5 teenagers, but wanted to still able to monitor them closely. The server was quick to get our order. We had: *BLAT *PATTY MELT *FRIED STEAK *CHICKEN SCHNITZEL SANDWICH * FRENCH DIP *BLOODY MARY *LEMON MERINGUE PIE I wasn't able to eat my Chicken Sandwich 'coz I was constantly watching the teens 'coz if I don't it's more of them Chatting or being on their phones than eating, but I was able to finish the LEMON MERINGUE PIE and my BLOODY MARY drink, which was very good, the Spicyness on my bloody Mary was perfect. I like their PIE, it wasn't too citrusy. I asked everyone "How's the food ? ", and the majority said that it's "just okay". Our server has a lot of patience, she probably came back 3 times 'coz the Teens were taking Forever to choose their food to order. Food is fire in the diner. The wagyu burger is fantastic and the fries are great as well. The fries are nothing to ignore. I have had some bad fires lately, but these are great and the ranch is fire. Ask for extra ranch! Drip coffee is great as well. Service is on point. Inside is clean and has a great atmosphere. Come in and enjoy the food and atmosphere. read more

This place is so amazing! We got basically everything. The chocolate hazelnut shake is delicious, the buckwheat pancakes with the citrus butter are to die for! We got the avocado bacon eggs benedict, breakfast tacos, and the eggs combo. Everything was seriously so good. To finish off the meal we also got the lemon meringue pie, the apple pie a la mode, and the cherry pie. All three were fabulous and probably the best pie I've ever had. The servers were really kind and attentive-and the restaurant itself is SO unique and the coolest spot ever. read more
Finally got to visit the updated Lafayette! It's so beautiful inside and a MUCH better use of some of the wide open spaces in the lobby. We had breakfast here both loved our food. The server asked if I wanted cheese added to my corned beef hash and I'm so glad I did because it made it even better! My wife loved her eggs, they were perfectly cooked! And she thought the English muffin was so good it might be made in-house. We'll be back! Only negative was the dark roast coffee was a bit too bitter for my liking. read more

The food is good and the vibes are even better! Everything was cooked perfectly. The BLAT and patty melt were delicious. The fries are crispy and super salty, the onion rings are to die for. It gets quite crowded, so I recommend coming earlier in the night. read more
I went there for my birthday brunch with a couple of friends. We sat inside (the friend who made the reservation didn't know that we could sit outside (I think the experience would have been nicer as it was a gorgeous day and there were plenty of empty tables). Somehow the 3 of us got cramped in a small table but we managed and it was ok. Service was fast and courteous. I ordered the egg benefits with avocado and I appreciated the dish being hot (I like my hot food not lukewarm). However, I found the food or the menu in general nothing out of the ordinary, just generic diner food presented nicely. I recommend people to go outside, the interior is just ok and usually if you go to The Lafayette it is because of the Instagram worthy decor in many cases. read more
The dinner was NJ in SD, I felt right at home! Everything from breakfast to dinner , and open 24 hrs, was super convenient to grab a quick bite after a long night of drinking. This place is one of the hidden wonders of San Diego. It definitely worth staying a night by at this hotel for a girl's trip or friends get together. There is so much to do here and not many people know of this spot. There is a diner that stays open 24/7. The Lou Lou restaurant is also beside it so you would never get enough of this place. You can go from one fantasy room to another. Each room has a different theme and takes you to a different world of fantasy and music. read more
Place is always busy and lively, but today was extra as we went right after the North Park Beer Festival which was right in front of the hotel. Lines were long for the drinks, but surprisingly didn't take long to find a place to sit. I ordered the Primm's Cup bc I saw it had strawberry, ginger and cucumber as some of the ingredients. Loved my drink as it was fresh, fruity and sweet. Not too sweet which I appreciate. Definitely will be coming back to try more items from their menu, but for this visit it was just one drink. Place is stunning when it comes to interior design. The staff were nice and helpful. Kudos to them for still being so nice when they are bombarded with non stop orders and questions. read more
I had the opportunity to re-visit the diner and it did not disappoint. The team at the diner made sure we received our BOOZY milkshakes and comped our entire order. They were super helpful, polite, and showed us a good time. Absolutely love the vibe and ambiance of the Lafayette hotel and have told many friends about it. We stopped in a few times during our stay at the Lafayette. Each time we had lovely service, tasty bites, and of course can't complain about boozy milkshakes to end a night's fun. This morning, we ordered the brunch Gravlax Tower, and it was delightful. (and plenty of food for 4!) read more

Insanely good! We are there 3 times during our 1 night stay!! The ranch is sooo good! The bananas foster French toast melts in your mouth! The pickled cherry tomatoes on the crudites was like nothing my tastebuds have ever experienced! They even put a disco ball in the bloody mary!! read more
This hotel has so many cool things. A pool area w a bar. A diner. A bowling alley. Quixote restaurant. More bars. The beet salad is a must but the rest of the food you can skip out on. The drinks were alright. Maybe the outside bars had better cocktails. Service was pretty good. read more
Blast from the past. Felt like I was in New Orleans, which is still on my bucket list, . This is a hotel but they also have restaurants and bars for the public to enjoy, the ambience was dim and a lot of chatter. though it can get really crowded but not too overwhelming. It was so cool tbh I cannot stop raving about it. Felt like I was In an old time vampire movie or a different era. We spontaneously came here for a drink and made new friends. The drink are a bit overpriced but the venue makes up for it. There isn't really a dance floor, more of a place to mingle, I would go again read more
My meal was delish. The hash browns were really crispy and seasoned well; the Benedict itself had a nice mix of textures. I loved the crispy bacon on the top and the eggs were cooked perfectly and runny when cut into. So why the low score? It's not cheap nor is it fast - both are things I love about eating at diners. We were there on a Sunday, so it was busy with brunch service. We probably waited about 50 minutes between ordering and getting our food. Cocktails are expensive and the food cost is priced similarly to other CH places - but this place is advertised as a diner. Overall, might come again - but it's not the most convenient to meet friends for brunch. read more

My only regret is that I didn't eat here more during my stay lol. The food was delicious- note if you come between the hours of 12-4pm the menu is a little more limited but it is open 24 hours. The service was great. Note, if you like soft drinks they come in little bottles- in case that influences your decision lol the pickles were also delicious- we were a fan of all except the pickled carrots. They also added a lot of dill to everything- which I loved- but if that's not your thing you may want to give them a heads up. For the French dip, the wagu reminded me of having Korean bbq. It's a very cute 50s diner. read more

A whole VINTAGE MAXIMALISM vibe. Multiple bars. Diner. Bowling alley with free games. Cafe. Epic bathrooms (lol). Pretty pool. Tons of patterns and prints in their decor. Delicious drinks with knowledgeable bartenders. Friendly staff. Will I return? Hope so! read more
Visited the place twice. Dinner and lunch with friends at the Quixote. Place is amazing. They did a great job renovating the place and more to come . The concept. Stained glass, dark wood paneling, cobblestones at the entryway, flickering Santa Maria candles and more. The restaurant is a little too dark with one candle stick in the middle (needed to pull out phone flashlight ) . The restaurant got too hot ( dinner) , there was someone by the exit door that opens it from time to time the whole entire time we were having dinner ( not sure if the vent system was down that day?) . During dinner - All the tables were occupied. There is a bar inside . Place was Crowded , some ppl were waiting to be seated , others just looking in probably just to see the decor. Lunch time - tons of place to seat. Food were ok. Ordered Branzino was a little on the salty side ( both times ) . There's so much to see in this place . There's an extensive bar The Lobby Bar is circular in design under the glass atrium ( best to see this at night ). The Gutter- it's a game room, 2-lane bowling alley included. Parking - valet, street parking. 3 star - food 5 star - ambiance 4 star - service. Staff all around the whole place were very friendly. Most of them offer a little bit of the hotel history. read more

No reservations are needed or offered in the Diner. You can eat outside on the Patio (hours vary) and/or take food to your room if you are a guest. I was there several different times of the day, and never had a wait to be seated.
