Well after a couple of months of driving by it. I finally stopped by. The beautiful wooden doors you go through, directly lead you to the menu and someone there ready to assist you. The menu doesn't have an excessive amount of things to choose from, which is cool because you can actually decide what you want and then comeback and try other things. I asked the lovely lady at the front what their most popular order was- she said the fried chicken (chicken tenders) and beignets, I went with that and the Chicory Coffee Milkshake. We picked a table and waited about 8-10 minutes before the food came out. You get 6 beignets with the chicken strips, freshly made with powdered sugar on top. The chicken strips , I felt were s little over cooked- they were pretty good with the Louisiana hot sauce. The shake was very creamy and not so sweet. It was perfect. There used to be a really bad Mexican restaurant at this location called El Serape (aka El Crappie), then it was vacant for years. Recently I noticed some activity taking place, namely a face-lift, and then it occurred to me that finally something good was coming soon. I intended to visit sooner but over the Memorial Day Weekend it seemed like the lines were really long with people waiting outside, so I decided to hold off. Let's talk about the parking situation. While there is a big, mostly empty lot in back all but one 20-minute space is for hire. Same with every street spot around the block. However, if you don't mind walking a couple blocks the parking situation improves with one-hour and 90 minutes options. You're welcome. The nicely lit and spacious dining area beckons, and the two-part menu is concise and laid out with breakfast and lunch/dinner options. They specialize in beignets (no way you say?) So naturally there are a lot of combinations and quantities available, as well as some tasty sounding dessert options. That Peach Cobbler beckons. I settled on the Fried Jerk Chicken Sando for $13.95. I had a nice chit-chat with the proprietor, a lovely lady, and took my order number tent to an open table around the corner in an alcove area. I was really hungry and feeling a tad impatient but right before I got antsy my order arrived and I was pleasantly surprised. In addition to the sammich there was a sizeable portion of waffle fries and two namesake beignets. There was also a side of their truly outstanding special sauce with its creamy, tangy texture. I stopped by the Beignet Spot today after jury duty and I'm so glad that I did. The food was amazing! I ordered the hash breakfast and it was so delicious. I also ordered peach cobbler beignets and they were very delicious as well. In addition to the great tasting meal and beignets the customer service was top tier as well. It was very forward with the mango with a nice kick to it without being unbearably spicy. I didn't try the sausage or eggs, but the grits were made to my liking, thick and creamy. The beignets were beautifully moist and puffy. They were very generous with the amount of beignets too. I also ordered the hot chicory coffee with half and half. The chicory wasn't overwhelming, and it helps cut the bitterness of the coffee (the half and half further cuts the bitterness). It was a great beverage to wash down the meal. Saw this place during the soft opening last week decided to look it up and give it a try. I thought all they had was beignets but really it is Caribbean fusion place. The location is really nice, a place you can dine in and socialize. Looks like a great place for breakfast during the weekend or visit during the night. For the first visit I had the banana foster banana. They looked so good even though I took them to go I couldn't wait to try before I got home. I have to say as good as beignets that I have ever had. The toppings were excellent and gives you something different than just plain style beignets. Of course comparisons to Dhat Creole Grill come up. I would say just as good the only main difference is DCG beignets are a little bit lighter less bread, while these are more filling. Overall I think this place is a little more foodie than DCG. This place has the good food you take pictures of and tell your friends about. It's been a while sense I've been to a place I've been really excited about and I go to good places all the time. Came here strictly for the beignets. Ordered the Classic 8 pack with powdered sugar and Peach Cobbler Beignet. The Classic 8 Pack($8.95) was as good as it looked. Soft and fluffy. It's not a real beignet until you get that powdered sugar everywhere after the first bite. The Peach Cobbler Beignet($11.95) you get 6 pieces topped with their house made peach cobbler filling, whipped cream, caramel drizzle and vanilla wafer crumble. Now this was really sweet. I mean if your blood sugar is low, eating this will make it spike. Definitely not recommended for those with diabetes and yes, even with a high dosage of metformin, you should not eat this. They have other breakfast, lunch and dinner items as well in which I will try on my next visit. For now my beignet craving has been fulfilled. In closing, Riverside is a bit of a drive if you live in LA or Orange County, especially with the traffic. I wouldn't go out of my way unless you are gonna be in the area or it's on the way. I think giving this place a two star is generous, but the workers were actually pretty kind. Beside the workers.... Everything else was not it. For starters the beignet were soooo oily my friend and I could barely digest it, it's been a couple hours but I can still taste the oil residual. We tried the 8 piece classic with chocolate dipping sauce which brings me to my second point... (sauce isn't Nutella) you pay 1.50 extra for dipping sauces and I think it's overpriced for a small container that isn't Nutella and just some knock off chocolate sauce. Thirdly we went around evenings time way before the sun went down and there was a "tweaker" (drugged lady) in the restaurant using the bathroom and they had a whole melt down infront of us. The staff members told us that it was a regular occurrence especially at night. Wouldn't recommend taking your kids/ family here, because it's just not family friendly for that reason. If you're thinking about having your kids try it definitely recommend taking it to go. We were pretty stressed out through the whole process. I'm sorry but with the 3/10 beignet and the ambiance I just wouldn't recommend it to anyone of my friends. Though if you're fine with sticking through with all that I do know they have some savory items that you could possibly also try.
