Excellent vegetarian slice of pizza. It weighed about a pound and tasted like heaven.

As soon as you walk in…read morethere is a large elegant bar area and a beautiful staircase leasing upstairs which is where we were seated. There was a jazz band playing which enhanced the atmosphere. Baked clams, crab cake, calamari were all terrific starters. This was followed by the Ribeye and Beef Wellington which were both delicious and perfectly prepared. Our waiter was very helpful and informative and a credit to the establishment. It's a nice location for an upscale experience. For what you get, the prices are reasonable as well. Would go back.

This brings us to The James, managed by Joe Giannino under the fat-cat "Standard Hospitality Group," owned by Andrew Affa & Steve Squirtiro. It's hard owning a business and keeping it profitable but not when it's an almost algorithmic formula driven money extraction system so commonly found today. It's more difficult dining out in the world today when it feels like hospitality is vacating. Vining more about high-revenue than humanity. By very definition, I wouldn't call a good portion of the hospitality industry hospitality at all, and I certainly wouldn't say the James offers any. What I love about food is what it does for the soul, & what I've always loved about providing and caring for people is the sense of community; connection during good times and difficult ones alike; That's hospitality to me. Breaking bread is one of the most fundamental human gestures of generosity and true wealth. When you have it, you share it not squander it, not hoard it or treat it like it's something to take from others and line your pockets with. That's why this experience disappointed me so much, because I believe with the myriad of options, we must be far more selective and far more supportive of local and smaller family run establishments. Today, for a table they would still fill and never notice, I tried to cancel a reservation out of respect -- respect for the staff, for other guests, and for my damn self. Being charged a cancellation fee when a mom is sick on Mothers Day, is not hospitality, it is not empathy. It is greed disguised as brand experience self worth. I have supported the Arlo from this same restaurant group in the past and probably would have happily returned too, based on the menu alone, but coldhearted, rigid policies like this change how a place feels. There are many family-run restaurants that understand flexibility and empathy. That kind of environment matters to me, and this experience will forever make me decide to support those places instead. I've recently learned to name positive outcomes when something negative arises, so I believe this time, it's great that it only cost me fifty bucks to never give this group another dime. Typical corporate hospitality is more what the James can offer. These types of COMPANIES feed themselves, not the community.

At the end of our meal, I intended to leave our waitress named Wappa a generous $30 tip. I handed her two $20 bills and asked her to give me $10 back and keep the rest as her tip. To my shock, she accused me of giving her two $10 bills instead of two $20 bills. Because there was a security camera positioned directly over the area where this occurred, I immediately asked management to review the footage. I was assured that the cameras would be checked, that the matter would be addressed, and that someone would contact me. I provided my full name and phone number and trusted that the restaurant would handle the situation professionally. That never happened. I never received a phone call, an update, an apology, or any explanation whatsoever. What makes this experience even more troubling is that my party and I were the only African American customers in the restaurant at the time, and we were the only customers who were questioned and accused of providing incorrect payment. While I cannot know anyone's intentions, the experience left me feeling singled out, embarrassed, and deeply uncomfortable. Mistakes and misunderstandings can happen, but ignoring a customer's serious concern after promising to investigate it is completely unacceptable. The lack of accountability, communication, and professionalism shown by both the staff and management has ensured that I will not be returning, and I believe other customers deserve to know about this experience.

They have one large high top table that accompanies large groups. Otherwise a small dining area in back (emphasis on small and tight), but cozy. The food comes out all at different times, smaller dishes meant to be passed and shared. A friend we went with had said the menu changed a little from the last time they came but overall the same. What we ordered and tried was all phenomenal. Can't go wrong with the Brussels sprouts and Braided short rib. The veal meatballs were mouthwatering and bread with Gorgonzola. Chefs kiss every bit. Ugh the dessert display, and variety can't be beat. I can't wait to go back and try them all!!! The atmosphere is dark and stormy, dim lights, with a gentle flicker of battery operated candle light. The bar area was packed it takes up the whole front end. A convenient location in Patchogue to walk around and a large public parking area in back, be careful of the permit only spots. Our waiter Mike was friendly, explained how the kitchen functioned and made recommendations, never pushy and timed his visits perfectly.

The staff was busy receiving orders, yet they were still able to maintain a friendly yet assertive vibe. Our waitress was on top of things, she always checked in to make sure we were good. The food was delicious. The Beet and Squash Salad was fresh and filling. They didn't hold back on any of the ingredients, and Lobster Linguine was delightful, especially with the sauce. We also ordered the Shrimp Oreganato Pizza, and I was pleasantly surprised by the texture of the thin crust and how flavorful everything was. I've done take-out once before, but this was my first time dining inside. My husband and I enjoyed our impromptu experience and we'd be happy to return. I look forward to dining outside once the weather gets warmer, as the outdoor space is nicely lit and more private.

Loud music and loud talking because people couldn't hear each other over the music. I started with a mango jicama salad from the specials menu, it was delicious, I definitely recommend it and I hope they still have it if I ever get back that way.
