There was a jazz band playing which enhanced the atmosphere. Baked clams, crab cake, calamari were all terrific starters. This was followed by the Ribeye and Beef Wellington which were both delicious and perfectly prepared. Our waiter was very helpful and informative and a credit to the establishment. It's a nice location for an upscale experience. For what you get, the prices are reasonable as well. Would go back.

This brings us to The James, managed by Joe Giannino under the fat-cat "Standard Hospitality Group," owned by Andrew Affa & Steve Squirtiro. It's hard owning a business and keeping it profitable but not when it's an almost algorithmic formula driven money extraction system so commonly found today. It's more difficult dining out in the world today when it feels like hospitality is vacating. Vining more about high-revenue than humanity. By very definition, I wouldn't call a good portion of the hospitality industry hospitality at all, and I certainly wouldn't say the James offers any. What I love about food is what it does for the soul, & what I've always loved about providing and caring for people is the sense of community; connection during good times and difficult ones alike; That's hospitality to me. Breaking bread is one of the most fundamental human gestures of generosity and true wealth. When you have it, you share it not squander it, not hoard it or treat it like it's something to take from others and line your pockets with. That's why this experience disappointed me so much, because I believe with the myriad of options, we must be far more selective and far more supportive of local and smaller family run establishments. Today, for a table they would still fill and never notice, I tried to cancel a reservation out of respect -- respect for the staff, for other guests, and for my damn self. Being charged a cancellation fee when a mom is sick on Mothers Day, is not hospitality, it is not empathy. It is greed disguised as brand experience self worth. I have supported the Arlo from this same restaurant group in the past and probably would have happily returned too, based on the menu alone, but coldhearted, rigid policies like this change how a place feels. There are many family-run restaurants that understand flexibility and empathy. That kind of environment matters to me, and this experience will forever make me decide to support those places instead. I've recently learned to name positive outcomes when something negative arises, so I believe this time, it's great that it only cost me fifty bucks to never give this group another dime. Typical corporate hospitality is more what the James can offer. These types of COMPANIES feed themselves, not the community.

They have one large high top table that accompanies large groups. Otherwise a small dining area in back (emphasis on small and tight), but cozy. The food comes out all at different times, smaller dishes meant to be passed and shared. A friend we went with had said the menu changed a little from the last time they came but overall the same. What we ordered and tried was all phenomenal. Can't go wrong with the Brussels sprouts and Braided short rib. The veal meatballs were mouthwatering and bread with Gorgonzola. Chefs kiss every bit. Ugh the dessert display, and variety can't be beat. I can't wait to go back and try them all!!! The atmosphere is dark and stormy, dim lights, with a gentle flicker of battery operated candle light. The bar area was packed it takes up the whole front end. A convenient location in Patchogue to walk around and a large public parking area in back, be careful of the permit only spots. Our waiter Mike was friendly, explained how the kitchen functioned and made recommendations, never pushy and timed his visits perfectly.

I remember it being in a larger glass years ago but oh well, I ended up ordering 2! Our waiter was extremely nice and personable. The restaurant itself was nice as well but unbelievably loud! Loud music and loud talking because people couldn't hear each other over the music. I started with a mango jicama salad from the specials menu, it was delicious, I definitely recommend it and I hope they still have it if I ever get back that way. I also ordered another appetizer for my dinner, mediterranean flatbread. It was mid. The toppings were good but the bread didn't seem fresh. Not a deterrent for a future visit though. I'll hopefully be back, there are so many interesting things on the menu and i definitely have to try some of the other drinks.

Managers were around making sure everyone was pleased without being obtrusive. The food quality was elevated as well. The burger is legit. No gristle in the beef, fresh buns, crisp bacon and the right amount of cheese, not too much , not to light. Truffle fries were very good , could have used a bit more truffle. The skirt steak was pretty good. Little chewy but had a good charred flavor. Would return , especially for the burger.

The flavor tasted like a mixture of vanilla and cardamom. The burnt orange color gave the drink a distinctive look. I know that it comes from food coloring. We ordered two dishes from this restaurant, both with which were insanely expensive however, I was willing to overlook the price if the quality of the food was sufficient. Almost $30 each for pad see yew and pad Thai, totaling over $70 for two dishes when all was set and done. In retrospect, I'm an idiot for paying so much for noodles. Regardless, I indicated "BABY level" of spice on my pad CU as in my old age I just can't handle it anymore. And my old age, I mean my 30s. Back on track, my order was received and not only were there barely any noodles or shrimp in my pad see yew, the container was not even halfway full. Both dishes, the pads see you and the pad Thai were so spicy that neither of us could eat it. Everything would be fine if that was where the story ended, but it's not. Upon calling the restaurant I spoke to a nice but powerless who handed the phone off to an even nicer gentleman with seemingly more power. He completely understood our predicament and offered anything we would want in order to remedy the situation. At this point, it is almost 9 o'clock at night so ordering and waiting for food to be delivered or re-delivered is not an option. We asked for a refund as the food is inedible. I also remind you that these two dishes were over $70 which is absolutely absurd. I also remind you that the pad see yew dish was maybe 50% full with three shrimp in total. The nice nice man asked me if I wanted to speak to the chef to which I said no, I need to speak with a manager. Oh no that wasn't a nice man. That was the nice but powerless lady that's who gave me the nice man. Somehow the Chef got on the phone and that's where everything falls apart. She was so offended that we requested a refund that she insisted that we were wrong, that they don't use spice, that we ate the food and couldn't prove it. She wanted a photo of said spicy food, as if the photo would indicate the level of heat. She thought we ate it already and wanted photo proof. She claimed that we were ruining her restaurant and said that we weren't nice. She said that she wanted us to come to the restaurant and return the food. Go anywhere else for Thai food, especially Galanga in Bay shore, where to the wise if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I apologize immensely for all in any spelling and grammatical errors, I am too tired and too hungry to proofread this voice memo review.
