(Slices of pizza on the Virginian Atlantic - 1 of 2) I kept getting messed up on where to eat, looking for places that offer up pasta and more, and just not being able to land on any near the Oceanfront District in Virginia Beach, or "Va Beach" to those who are too cool for school. I then figured I'd get pizza, but did not want an entire pizza. I looked up some places up along Atlantic and Pacific (real streets, not a game of Monopoly) and it seemed that parking the car near 21st and 22nd, where these major arteries feed in in a perpendicular way from the greater Hampton Roads area to the parallel aforementioned streets, sounded like a good idea. There would be pizza there. Some locals mentioned Gina's Pizza. It appears they have reinstated the prefix Bella to the name. Hence, it Bella Gina Pizza. Take note that "bella" means beautiful or pretty in Italian, even though "Bella" makes the top 10 list for what people are currently naming their dogs. (There's so much conformity in this world.) I knew a "bella Gina" would not be serving up my pizza, but most likely someone of another ethnicity - which is fine - and that was the case. The apparent owner was very welcoming and wanted to make sure I liked my pizza. I saw what would be a "supreme" type pizza offered up in slice form - meat, pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers, etc. It was later in the day, but he told me he could add the ingredients to the base cheese and pepperoni and make it happen. The slice of pizza was good and large enough, but it would have probably been better earlier in the day when more veggies were being grilled. This caused an uneven taste in how cooked the ingredients were, which was mentioned as a probability, although the medium and chewy crust was to my liking. I don't know how I felt about $5.99 for this slice in terms of pricing south of the Mason-Dixon line, but Va. Beach is a nice enough beach town, albeit with some tacky overtones, and the prices there reflect that. So far, I'm at 4 stars. The food was good and so was the service. The interior is big and bright, with both wooden seating and booths and upholstered ones at the perimeter. The deal was that it was a warm night - and an exceptionally humid one - and it was too hot inside the store. It appeared that the air conditioning may not have been on and the ceiling fans up above were definitely not spinning. I know that pizza is hot and it can warm you up, but rarely have I eaten pizza that's not spicy to have my forehead sweat. This clearly drops them a star. I'm now at 3 stars for the Bella Gina Pizza location closest to the statue of Neptune on the boardwalk. Note that, unless you walk many blocks inward from the ocean, meters are to be fed 24 hours a day the closer you get to the beach. read more

Did an online order and when we arrived to pick it up, the guy seemed to have no clue what I was talking about. Showed him my phone and he had to ask around in the back to get this resolved. The restaurant has hours posted incorrectly . They will say they are closed when open and vice versa. Staff was friendly and fast. The restaurant is clean but every sign is hand printed and taped over something else. A lot of the prices for combos were hidden. Whether it's a price or directions for bathrooms it's all hand printed wrinkly signs. The food was underwhelming for its price. The wings were tiny but good. Our drink pitcher came out in 15 minutes, as well as the free garlic knots they threw in with dine in orders. The garlic knots were drowning in oil that made them unappealing to the palate. The pepperoni pizza was fine, but nothing special to be worth what they charged. We had to add garlic powder, crushed red pepper, and parmesan to actually make it worth eating. Our chicken calzone was decent, large, and well priced, but we cut open the top of it to look inside and there were only 4 small pieces of chicken in the entire thing! This was highly disappointing, as the bites with the chicken were the best ones. If you're looking for a pizza place in Virginia Beach, I'd suggest checking out a different one. read more

This was one of the better reviews places that came up so we decided to try it. To say I'm disappointed in an understatement. The slices were about $3-4 for one which is average anywhere you go. I ordered a sausage preprint one and they completely forgot about my order even though I had already paid. I was standing waiting for my food for 15-20 minutes. For just one slice of pizza! After a worker realized that I was standing there for a while, he decided to get my pizza. So I'm not sure if they don't usually serve a pepperoni sausage pizza already made but I saw them take a pepperoni pizza and just sprinkle some sausage over it. The pizza wasn't very good either. My family has been visiting this pizza place for a few years now; pizza was always great - you could see them make the crust, the perfect amount of cheese with the perfect amount of sauce just peeking through the cheese. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll return after last night's visit. 2 separate orders in our party placed at the same time: (1) one slice of cheese pizza and one slice of pepperoni and sausage pizza (2) one calzone with sausage and onions. The sausage was cold and flavorless. How is a topping on a hot piece of pizza cold? Biggest issue - the calzone took 30 minutes to receive. My friend sat there waiting as we ate our pizza. Finished our slices (after picking off the sausage) and we all waited for the calzone. And waited. The order was checked on twice. Received one free soda for the wait. When my friend finally received the calzone (as a to-go order at this point), it was huge and looked beautiful. It did have a lot of cheese in it! However, the onions were raw and in one pile inside the calzone, and the cheese inside the calzone was barely melted. There's no way it took 30 min to make this calzone; it was probably just put under the broiler for the crust to brown. Truly, it was not cooked. I recommended that our group go here to grab a quick dinner. The restaurant wasn't really busy - there were plenty of open tables. For the wait, the calzone should have been amazing. I have to wonder how many other hungry tourists get suckered in by the $9.99 large cheese pizza sign by their front door. It's good marketing though because there's only 2 pizza sizes available ~ large and extra large. (The large is 14 inches.) Feed your soul! Strolling Atlantic looking for grub,and found this spot out of all the pizza joint around. Great variety open late friendly staff. Got the steak wrap came with fries great choice. Wifee got the meatball sub very pleased. Extensive menu we saw after the fact and vowed to try something else another day but the trip ran short. Stopped by for a late night bite, was a bit disappointed with the food. How does an Italian restaurant NOT have any garlic? They've got garlic oil, but no actual garlic. VERY disconcerting to say the least. I decided to go with a stromboli, so I asked the guy at the counter about the size of their stromboli. I was told that they were 12"X6" after which the guy went in the back to tell the cook to make sure he makes my stromboli large. Which leads me to believe that their stromboli aren't normally that size, but then again neither was mine. I'm not going to fault them for it because it did come close, measuring in at 11"X3". My further disappointment came when there was barely any of the toppings I had ordered. It was jam packed with mozzarella, which is great in my book, but it was cheap quality cheese. Which would have been offset by the "toppings", if there had been any sort of significant amount. We also got a gyro that came with fries. Gyro was good, the lamb was juicy, it was just lacking in the tomato department. The fries had NO salt. =( read more
