You walk in and people can't figure out what's going on or how counter service works. Maybe a sign would help? Second time we've had to walk out of a ruggles green because it was way too packed. I've had the pizza before, not the best in my opinion, but Pinks is just down the street here in The Heights with the awesome pie. I really wanted to like this place. I love the Ruggles on West Alabama and I was hoping this would be just as good considering it is closer to my house. There are some positives about this Ruggles. It has more parking. I counted 3 different lots. They are not all attached to the building, but they are close and all the parking is awesome. Secondly they have better bathrooms then the original Ruggles. Instead of what feels like standing in a closet while waiting for the bathroom they have normal restaurant bathrooms. Way to go. Lastly this Ruggles also has a better layout. You do not feel like you are squeezing by people on your way to your table or to refill your drink. The main drawback to this Ruggles is the food. I love the French onion soup at the other one, but my French onion soup here had about 3 of the sprouts on it, and the cheese was only half melted. It also had way too much of the seasoning actually in the soup. It tasted like I was getting a mouthful of twigs. I also had the special of the day lamb burger for $14. The meat had not turned, but the way it was seasoned made it inedible. I tried it from a few different directions hoping that I had just gotten a bad bite. They were all bad bites. The only way I can describe the flavor is "dust." I would have complained but I was afraid they would replace it and I would have to try that one too. I have not completely given up on this place yet. I am going to give it a few months, and then I am going to go back. Hopefully these are just growing pains, and it becomes as good if not better than the one on West Alabama. I hope I can update my review and give it a bazillion stars next time. read more

Stopped by and grabbed a wrap on Sunday evening. I always appreciate a good healthy option. I do have to say that the wraps are pretty good though I think the chicken was dry. I ordered two, one for dinner and one for lunch the next day and do have to say this and the quinoa salad both refrigerate very well. As someone who suffers from multiple food allergies and celiac, I have a hard time finding a safe place to eat. I'm writing this review in order to highlight the staff at Bellagreen in the Heights. When I first walk in, I usually encounter Jordan who has taken my order many times. He is always very attentive and detailed to make sure that my allergy concerns are addressed. Jasmine who has also taken my order on several occasions, is very knowledgeable of the menu and ingredients used. She has even caught some ingredients on items that would have caused me issues and for that I am so grateful. I know that I can trust her to review the items I order in order to eat safely. Last but not least, there is Emilio. He usually runs tickets in the window and is very diligent in making sure that my food is cooked as ordered. He even keeps a copy of my allergy list with him (although I always bring my own.) I can always trust that if Emilio is there to monitor my order, my food will come out safely. I am so appreciative that even though I have a demanding allergy list, the bellagreen heights team is so understanding and makes me feel that it is not a burden to take my order or prepare my food. read more

I really like the environment inside at this location; however, the parking is so minimal and tight. The staff is friendly and I enjoy the food, but I have a few bones to pick with Ruggles Green. 1. Why must there not be a simple Meat & Veggie entree on the menu? The only meat and side option they offer is on their specials list which range from a steep $15 - $30 dollars. There's a section for tacos and pizza and salads and desserts, but no regular entrees. 2. Why must everything be so expensive? Ok, I know they do free range, gluten free, organic, and all of those special things, but what about those people, like me, who just want to have a healthy, well balanced meal at an affordable price. On my visit the other day, I ordered the Zaatar Chicken over mashed potatoes and a side of green beans. I paid $25 for this one dish, and it wasn't really anything extraordinary. 3. Lastly, why, oh why, must they display their dessert menu so prominently? I eat at Ruggles Green so that I only choose healthy food. Dessert being displayed before me from the get-go does not help me make good and healthy choices. Sure, they look yummy and healthier than other dessert places, but give a girl a break. Ruggles Green will make this girl happy if they just add an affordable meat and veggie option to the menu and if they hide the sweets from me. Nevertheless, I'll still visit periodically. read more

I've also stolen pizza from my friend's plates and that was good, but nothing can get me off of that pasta seafood dish. They have a patio for days of nice weather, but it's right on 11th so not the best. At this location, there is a parking lot to the west of the building on 11th. There is also a tiny lot to the south of the building and it is a trap. Don't try to park in there. I have a tiny car and find it terrible, especially when people bring in their 15-passenger suburban and block in other cars with their inability to understand how the size of vehicles and turning radii work. read more

I've never met anyone who wasn't a Ruggles Green fan...these reviews have surprised me! The food is fresh and delicious. The tacos (both chicken and shrimp) are super good. Don't pass up the hempanadas as an appetizer--they are definitely worth it! The Texas Caesar salad is fine, but I probably won't get it again. The sauces on the side of the hempanadas and tacos are out of this world. I wish I could just got those with some chips :) A little pricey, but definitely worth it every now and then! read more

I'm a regular at Ruggles at the other location near Kirby. While I like the location at the Heights because it is quieter, the food is different. They don't offer the same daily specials as the other location and the food is prepared differently. The chicken tacos have purple onions that taste pickled (?) at this location. I think they're super-gross (and I love pickled foods). I wish they made them the same exact way as the other location. Also, the portions always vary. My friends and I call it "feast or famine". The chicken and fish tacos will either be tiny, or enormous - but never the same way twice. The waitstaff are fine...for the 2 minutes you speak with them. The parking is better than the other location. I just wish they offered the same specials (I dig the Paleo tacos at the other location!). I hope they figure out how to create consistency with their portions so I know if I'm ordering a snack, or a meal. The staff should be caught up to speed on what foods contain dairy, or gluten. (I'm grateful they have these allergen-free items on offer!) Today, I had a cashier tell me the mayonnaise-based peach chipotle was dairy, yet the other employees swear it's not. I've also been told certain foods contain gluten, when they do not. BTW...An egg is not dairy. Please don't take it off my salad. The Greek pizza was good and had fresh ingredients but was pretty pricey at $14. However, it was huge so you can share with a friend. We also got the "Austin imported" lemonade which wasn't as sweet as most fountain lemonades. We had some of our friend's sweet potato fries which were a bit burnt. This place was amazing! First visit was this morning when we wanted to try something different. We parked in the little parking lot next door, walked in to a short line and then offered. Cashier was very friendly and quick. I ordered the eggs Benedict Florentine and the hubs ordered the open face egg sandwich. Meals came with O'Brien potatoes and scalloped potatoes. I couldn't tell you which I liked best because they were both amazing. We will def be back when we are in the area. I wish they would open one in Kingwood!! This location is tiny. There are tables outside but most only hold two people. We ordered drinks and our friend ordered some spinach dip. I ordered a mimosa because they have a good deal on them on the weekends I think it was 99 cents. The guy behind the counter said he would bring it out and gave me a number. I waited probably 10 minutes and still no drink. I went up to the counter to ask about it and they said they didn't have an order for a mimosa but would bring it right out that it only took a second to make. I'm impressed that they can make pasta from quinoa - so if you are celiac, this is a great find. But it generally lacks the chewy delicious texture you'd expect, so kind of disappointing otherwise. Not to mention that the sauce/toppings aren't that exciting (we tried spicy SW chicken and Mac n cheese). This little restaurant is exceptional! You order your food at the counter, they give you a number, and you seat yourself. The restaurant is pretty quaint but I have not yet had an issue finding seating. The decor is "plant-themed" and simple. I have made this place my "I want something quick, but #healthy and delicious" go-to spot. Both times I have been here, I ordered the Goat Cheese Salad which is one if my most favorite salads I have ever had. I have also tried the Organic Spinach Dip and Chickpea Hummus as appetizers. The flatbread that comes with these appetizers is so good and flavorful, and both dips were delicious. The menu is huge, they really have something for everyone whether that is pizza, pasta, salad, wraps, and more. The parking lot is a little cramped, but that is my only real issue. I got the spicy shrimp tacos for lunch here with coworkers. It comes with corn tortillas and I asked if they had flour but they didn't. It's served on a large plate with 4 tortillas laid out underneath 2 mounds of shrimp taco filling. It was surprisingly a lot more food than it looked. I ended up taking one taco to go. One of my coworkers got the chicken tacos and she only finished 2/4 tacos, she had much more filling than those of us who got the shrimp. read more

Ruggles Green offers consistent food in a good atmosphere, but, unfortunately, consistent in this sense is pretty ho-hum. We visit Ruggles Green a lot. My daughter is obsessed with the place, but I think it is only for their tea, as she never seems to want to eat anything on the menu. For my part, I try to avoid the restaurant, as I just don't find the food inspiring. Sandwiches always appear to be thrown together, and entrees just aren't that great. My wife generally enjoys the salads, so that is a highlight, though I'm not really a salad guy myself. What makes it frustrating is that the prices range in the $11-15 range for sandwiches and salads, so, one would expect a higher level of quality. The inside feels a bit cramped, but I'm not sure why, potentially the layout needs to be adjusted, as the bathrooms are in the middle of the dining area. We especially like sitting on the porch because the kids can roam a bit and get a little loud without us having to constantly apologize to everyone in the restaurant. Service here is always friendly and prompt, and they are always accommodating to my kids. I've always found that the RG restaurants do a good job in this space. One thing I will question is the green efforts here; some of the food does appear in line with this, but then you have a wall of French's Mustard, Hellman's Mayo, and Heinz Ketchup in plastic bottles. I don't really have a problem with it, but, does all of that align with a "green" restaurant? Overall, the restaurant offers consistency, it's just annoying that you have to pay so much for something that could be better. read more

Ruggles Green deceives diners, in the best way possible. For a premium price, you pay for seemingly healthy goods... only to realize that you are ingesting nicer versions of pizza and macaroni and cheese. For example: arugula salad... topped with fried goat cheese. Natural beef hamburger... accompanied by bacon and cheddar. Fresh dessert... topped with bukus of vanilla bean ice cream. None of these are bad things, but I figured the word "Green" generally misrepresents healthy eating. The aforementioned goods are all great options, but on my recent visit, the flourless espresso chocolate cake won me over. Nearly truffle like, this dense piece of slightly caffeinated dessert (cocoa beans) filled me up on a recent trip for lunch. Yup, chocolate cake for lunch. On the other end, I do appreciate the counter service, as I don't feel as much of an obligation to tip. With a slight premium in the food cost, you can make it up with the fast-casual concept... both providing an outlet for affordability and quality food. I've been here a few times for dinner and once for brunch and have been pretty happy with everything I've had so far. The cuban pork sandwich was the most disappointing menu item I've tried so far. I tried it twice and the pork was really dry both times. I've tried the spicy chicken and fish tacos too and while they are both delicious, the way they serve them is odd...like the taco should be split into two tacos, but instead they serve it as one and it's way too big to pick up as one, so you end up splitting it into two yourself. For breakfast, I really enjoyed the lemon poppyseed pancakes! The counter staff is always super friendly, no matter how busy they are. And they are BYOB, which is ALWAYS a plus. If it's busy inside, it's pretty loud, but they have a nice wrap-around covered patio which is much more laid back. Would I come here on a date? no. but for a quick, casual meal, this place is pretty awesome. Oh!...the empanadas are AWESOME. I get them every time and they never let me down. Interesting, delicious well-crafted menu of incredibly fresh farm-to-table-style food, featuring great hipster fare and seasonal specials, right down to the organic wine and buffalo burgers. This place is great. When you first walk in, the menus are available up front, along with their specials board and beer and wine listings, but entryway is configured rather awkwardly, and leaves people loitering around the front while they make their selections before meandering up to the counter to place their order, so it would be nice to have a little more clarity around that process, but it still seems to work fairly well, and I get the impression most people come here already having decided what they want. Once you've placed your order, grab your number, go fetch your silverware and condiments, and then settle in to wait a couple of minutes - such is the price of getting crazy-fresh food. There are plenty of interesting, varied vegetarian options, all of which are clearly marked on the menu. The two that I've tried, the Honey-Fried Goat Cheese & Arugula Salad, and the Super Veggie Tacos, have both been crazy delicious. Filling, but not to the point of leaving me comatose, and bursting with great, fresh ingredients and fun, interesting, well-balanced flavors. My dinner companion on this last visit must have ordered one of the specials, because I can't find it on the menu, but it was an absolutely gorgeous salmon dish, perfectly flaky and served over garlic mashed potatoes with roasted veggies, including these great brussel sprouts with those little perfectly charred spots on the outside leaves. Gluten-free and dairy-free items are also clearly marked. These guys have done their homework, too - the salads with Parmesan are clearly marked as non-veg friendly. When we walked in, the Boss commented that it feels like a Whole Foods, and he's kind of right - it has that very conscientiously crafted hipster-like feel to it, but it doesn't feel quite as hawkish as Whole Foods. (Don't get me wrong, I love me some Whole Foods, but I always come out feeling like I should go binge-eat a bag of Cheetos out of spite.) Being in this place reminds me of being back in Austin. Lots of awesome natural light and greenery - I highly recommend sitting out on the deck if the weather is nice. The street traffic is a little loud, but it's great to see the Heights buzzing with pedestrians, and the people-watching is gold. Highly recommend. read more

Well, if you remember what a disaster the hybrid 11th St/Ruggles Cafe was, you will be pleasantly surprised. Parking still an issue, but it looks as if they've allocated a couple of different spots (down the street where the firetruck is and behind the building) for additional parking. We went in late on Sunday and enjoyed the fish tacos & turkey burger. The feel of the place is open and bright and the food was delish! So while we had to wait almost a year past their original open date - they knocked it out of the park... So this girl will forgive them. A welcome addition to the Heights! read more

Our first trip to the new Ruggles Green location did not disappoint! The building has been beautifully redone and the layout is better than the West Alabama location, in that the order line is separated from the dining area. My only complaint is they could have done more noise dampening--it's pretty loud. Weather permitting, I think I'd prefer the wrap-around patio, which is semi-insulated from the street by a row of bamboo. Service was competent and friendly, food came out quickly, and everything we had was great--just like at the other locations (menu is identical). My husband had a lamb burger special that was well-seasoned and juicy. I swiped a few of his fries, which were delicious. I had the goat cheese and arugula salad, which was yummy if a bit one-note by the end. Even the iced tea was top-notch! In short, this is not a place to go on a first date or to catch up with a long lost friend--it's loud and you're in and out in 30 minutes max. But the atmosphere is pleasant, the food is high-quality and expertly prepared, and it's great value for money when you're looking for a quick bite. PS: There is ample parking in the lot just west of Ruggles on 11th Street. Don't bother trying to squeeze into the little one on Studewood. read more
