Knowledgeable and Trustworthy!…read more I have a 15+ year old refrigerator that neither the refrigerator or freezer were working. Akai inspected the entire unit and indicated the issue was the defroster in the freezer wasn't working and needed to be replaced. He quoted me what I thought was a very fair price but before I could say "Shut up and take my money!" he added that when he had unplugged the unit & plugged it back in, when starting up again the compressor sounded a bit suspicious. Thus he indicated I could go ahead and pay him to install a new defroster in the freezer, but it is only a matter of time before the compressor craps out and then replacing it would be over $1,000 and not worth it. So get this....he proposes that I defrost it the old school way by unplugging it, opening both the freezer & fridge doors, placing towels in front of the unit, and allowing all of the ice to melt and then just mop up all the water with towels and my wet vac and that would solve the problem for now. And in a few months when the issue occurs again I can just repeat the old school defrosting method until the compressor finally goes kaput, and then get a brand new refrigerator. Sure enough, I proceeded to do exactly what he recommended and lo and behold the fridge & freezer started working properly again. And I am all too happy to repeat every few months to squeeze every last bit of life from this old fridge until I have to get a new one. Akai could have very easily kept quiet about the compressor sounding sketchy and that it could fail in 3 weeks, 3 months, or 3 years and gotten a nice service order for replacing the defroster since he had already devoted the valuable time & effort to come to my house. However, he instead chose to be completely honest and forthcoming which is not as common as it should be and is very appreciated. I have saved his contact info and the next time I have any issues with any appliances he will be the technician I call. Knowledge and experience is great and there are a lot of qualified & knowledgeable appliance repair companies out there. However, also possessing honesty and integrity is why I strongly recommend Akai for any appliance repair issues.

It's been 3 weeks since I first contacted the guy, James Gonzales, and I'm still waiting for a…read morereceipt, which makes me think he overcharged us for a part. Scheduling was a huge hassle too -he's very disorganized and lacks follow-up, so if you're a busy person, choose someone else. [update : he sent the receipt to the cloud instead of to the email I gave him post-facto, but he never bothered to let me know that it was there, even after three inquiries from me by text : he's a horrible communicator]. We gave him time to get the 2 parts needed for the repair, even when one had to come from factory, and even offering to pay for them in advance in order to secure them both. But he never confirmed. My husband and I are both very busy people so scheduling home repairs is never easy. We only had time for him to come once and do all repairs needed. But instead, James assumed mid-way over the 3 weeks , that I was a housewife with nothing to do but wait for his coming whenever he pleased: I got a text one day, unexpectedly, announcing his coming that same day (??) , on a day of his choosing (!) and with only one part in hand, and without ever confirming if there would be someone at home. People work! My speaking Spanish apparently boosted his sexism. Luckily, I stopped him on time. Regarding the cost, I'm still wondering how a simple timer for a dryer can be $100. Maybe, but without a proper receipt, I can't know. I don't know how we ended up paying $250 total to change a $30 dryer felt (the only price I ever got) and a timer. I don't know if the $50 visit was incorporated into the labor itself, or if it was in addition . My husband saw the receipt quickly (James said he would send me the receipt by email, but he had never asked me for my email in the first place! --his intake for new customers is awful , very disorganized) and after several* requests from me, he finally said he would send the receipt- but we only heard from him after my husband was forced to contact him himself, given he wasn't answering my texts , which were always polite and respectful btw. So I sent him my email. As of today, still no reply and still no receipt. My husband tells me the visit itself was good. But James had to be asked to give an ETA that day, and he sent it quite late, not knowing if my husband could stay that late. It is important for busy people who have things to do to know when a repair person will arrive : My husband had somewhere to go after the visit. At the end, James was apparently thorough with the repair and explained how to avoid future problems, but having him ever come again? Forget it!
