Stopped at this new place for lunch today because my office is close by. I got the Catfish Meal (Single portion). The portion was a good size (plenty)! The catfish was great; loved the cornmeal batter. The slaw and fried okra were traditional and both very good. We splurged and got cookies too - straight out of the oven. Delicious. Hands down, best catfish spot I've been able to find. Nice portions - full sized fillets, not chunks, or thin portioned fillets, real deal fillets decently priced. We decided to give Belzoni's a try this weekend and we're not disappointed! I had the catfish entree with sides of turnip greens and fried okra and all were delightfully delicious. The staff was friendly, and the restaurant was super clean. There are no fountain drinks, so if you want a soda, you'll have to buy a bottled drink. We had the sweet tea, and it was perfect. I hate having to give this place a bad review. The food is at least average and the wait staff is friendly. If it weren't for the terrible attitude of the owner/manager - I think his name is Lamont - I would have given this place a 3. So let's get my impression of the food out of the way first. The fried catfish is about what you would expect, although this time it had a pretty strong fishy taste. This happens to catfish when it isn't fresh. Soaking it in milk for a half hour before cooking will help with this. Same goes for the lemon pepper grilled catfish, which we have had twice now. We tried this place last year and were satisfied enough to come back a second time. However, If the fish had been this "unfresh" the first time we wouldn't have come back. The hush puppies are the little sausage shaped variety and fairly bland, so my guess is they are store bought and not made fresh. The French fries were room temp and limp. I prefer them hot and crispy. Same goes for the fried okra, which I remember from last year. We did order in the parking lot and only live about a mile from here. Maybe they should try lining the box with tin foil or something. The Po Boy, which they call catfish on a bun is average. It came with only 1 filet whereas most places provide 2 in my experience. I don't think I could have handled 2 overly fishy filets anyway. I say it's average because I've had worse and it's very hard to impress me with fried catfish. Very few places do it really well. The bun wasn't toasted and I think it just had some basic mayo, lettuce and pickled jalapeño. The Mac and cheese is average as well. Everything is about what you would expect from a restaurant in this area; nothing to get excited about but nothing so terrible you just have to jump on Yelp and comment...until now. So we pull into the parking lot and notice they aren't allowing anyone inside. They have paper menus available curbside and a number to call. We ordered the catfish-on-a-bun and the 1/2 platter of grilled catfish. My wife is Asian and doesn't like fried food and our two small children don't like fried fish. They like grilled and asked for grilled. They had the lemon pepper grilled last year and liked it. I was sitting right next to her when she asked for grilled. We get home and open the box and all the filets are fried so my wife calls the restaurant. The lady on the phone apologized but offered no solution. My wife offered to bring the fried fish back to swap for what we actually ordered and the lady acquiesced. About half way down the road, Lamont - or something close to that - calls her and says "I looked at the order and you didn't order grilled, it says fried. If you had ordered grilled, the waitress would have asked you which seasoning you wanted because we have 3 different options." My wife says to him "But that's not on your menu. How am I supposed to know there are 3 different options? The menu just says lemon pepper grilled so I asked for grilled." He says, "We can't just take your food back. If you want grilled we'll give you a few grilled". My wife came back home and told me about it. We checked the online menu and it says if you don't want fried you can get lemon peppered grilled upon request. It doesn't mention any other seasoning options. How are we supposed to know. Now obviously it's just a simple miscommunication. The lady took the order wrong. This could have avoided if she had repeated the order back to my wife to be sure everything was correct. So I call and talk to the guy. He gives me the same attitude and basically accuses my wife of lying. I start telling him what I expect but he just continues to talk over me and finally says "just come and get your fish!" "I will!" My wife went back there with the fried fish and a waiter brought out the grilled. No apology, no discussion and no thank you for the 15% tip that you left me earlier. Unbelievable! It's not like we ate the fried fish and were trying to get some more free fish. We brought it back to swap for what we ordered. We are the ones being inconvenienced. We didn't make the mistake. The only mistake we made was choosing this place. Does this guy think we like having to come back with two hungry 3 and 4 y/o kids waiting for their food? Aside from the terrible attitude the food wasn't even as good as the first time we had it. Like I said it had a very strong fishy taste...now I'm thinking maybe that guy hooked us up with some bad fish for being a burden....great read more

The man that took my credit card also very nice. He hands me my order and the smell, less than desirable. So sad that the smell didn't draw me in. It smelt like old fry oil and I am praying it's not a reflection in all the food. Sadly, it was. Catfish is over fried and yup in old oil. Not only did the old oil permeate the catfish it also made the color dark and unappealing. I hope they read this and take it to heart. As a Catholic during lent, I am always looking for easy access to fish, especially on Fridays. Onward! The onion rings also fried had the old oil all over them. Green beans, mushy, straight from a can and added too much salt. Overall, hardly edible. Please God hear my prayer. Please make the turnip greens good. Because you know lord Johnny likes his greens... and ugh. Too much salt and little to no flavor. Well this was a $30.00 lesson for me. I tried Belzoni's Catfish Cafe today for the first time and was really impressed with the lady on the phone who took my order, Greg who delivered my order and just the overall friendliness of the people. The food is the reason for my rating I ordered three " double" catfish meals the fish was seasoned and tasty however the sides Mac & Cheese and Turnip Greens lack taste, seasoning and I don't plan on ordering them again. The fried okra and coke-slaw would be the only two sides I would order in the future. I also tried the Catfish balls - it was overcooked and didn't have jalapeños, onions or the items stated on the menu with my order. Overall, I will try Belzoni again due to the service and hopefully update my review on the food. read more

I haven't had catfish this good in a long time! The cornmeal breading is crispy but this fish is still moist and flaky. There was a long wait to order and, understandably so, it took a bit to get our food. It was well worth the wait! Evidently, many people have told their friends, neighbors, and coworkers about how good Belzoni's is. This will be my go to catfish place from now on. HUGE filets with a nice cornmeal batter, cooked to perfection. I got the double plate and the single would have been more than enough.
