I heard about Cicada through instagram and decided to reserve their pop-up dinner at Beast & Co in…read moreFt Worth. Lovely, chic ambiance upon walking in. We were greeted by Chef Cody's wife (I believe her name is Haley?), and seated at 2-top table in the front room by the bar. We waited until the other guests arrived for the 7pm seating, and our dining experience began. Let me just start by saying that I've definitely spoiled myself, having been to several tasting menus across Dallas and a handful in other states. To be honest, this one did not live up to my expectations, unfortunately. I still give 4 stars for the overall dining experience, as the chef and his staff were very friendly and efficient, and provided a warm, welcoming environment. This was a 10-course tasting menu with 5 natural wine pairings, coming out to ~$450 for 2 people after taxes and before tip. This is a reasonable price for the DFW area. From the menu, I really liked the first few courses, especially the boneless pork rib and fermented potato bread! The panko-breaded pork was SOOO soft and tender, juicy goodness in every bite. And the potato bread with cultured brie butter was so dense, unlike any "bread" I've had before! From the entrees, I enjoyed the oyster carbonara, which had a rich taste to it - not much oyster flavor, just as the chef had described upon bringing out the dishes, but very cheesy without being overwhelming. I liked how they started and ended with tartlette - definitely enjoyed the chilled grilled asparagus one, especially with the delicate crust of the tart. Now, a few criticisms of the menu - I think there were a few too many fried pieces - the panko-fried pork followed by the fried avocado was a little heavy for me. I was a little disappointed by the aged duck breast course. I very much enjoy duck breast, but I really look for the crispy skin on top with tender meat throughout. Maybe I had a bad piece, but my duck meat pieces were very chewy, and I couldn't finish it all. The beet bordelaise was an absolute delight and added elegant flavor to the dish. I was also excited for the apple & hazelnut dessert, as I loooove hazelnut! But I thought that the koji salt was a little too salty and overpowered the apple and hazelnut pieces. I will note here as a disclaimer that I have a salt-sensitive palate, so this may not have been the case for others. The wine pairings were excellent - each wine went along with 2 courses of the menu. However, I was surprised that they did not change out the wine glass for the middle 3 wines, moving from white to orange to red wines... I would expect that in a wine tasting at a vineyard where they are trying to conserve cups/glasses for the small pours, but in a fine dining setting, I expect the glass to be changed out for each wine. I did like that they paired the sake with the two dessert courses, definitely played into my Japanese heritage. I did notice that as they were pouring the sake, the nigori had settled a bit to the bottom. I would like to see the sake being tilted a little bit before pouring so that the particles do not settle. I thought the pacing of the meal was great - very relaxed but not waiting too long between courses, and the dishes were explained thoroughly and in a timely manner. Haley had great timing as well, pouring each wine before the dish was brought out. I appreciated how she explained the rationale of why each was paired to complement the flavor profile of the dish.

The food is exquisite, you never know what you'll be getting in terms of flavor. The past 6 months, I've not had any repeated items on their menu, so savor it since you may not be able to try it until they open their tapas restaurant. I'm not going to lie, there were some (very few, 1 or 2) that didn't hit the spot for me but it is rare. Most of the time I'm amazed with the burst of flavor with just one bite. Service is great and ambiance is wonderful. It is a BYOB and five course meal. They will work with you if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions.

I chose a coconut shrimp and a carne asada. Both were delicious. In fact, the carne may be the best I've ever tasted. The ingredients were high quality and perfectly prepared. The accompanying sauces and condiments were thoughtfully combined to enhance the fillings and the soft, tasty corn tortilla were up to the task of holding it all together. The queso was a big hit as was the chicken mole taco. The service was friendly and really quick in plastic-free trays. The guests seemed happy with the delicious food and casual atmosphere.

The General Manager was friendly and knowledgeable. The other staff were polite and helpful. It was a warm welcome to the establishment. I had multiple requests and they were all taken care of. Ambiance was good no complaints. Dining room was clean and comfortable. I like that they offer booths and tables for seating. The decor is simple with chicken art. The vibe is laid back and gives a little bit of country down to earth feel. Mimosas were definitely full of champagne! Chicken sandwich was moist and juicy. I like the slaw and pickles that come on it. I chose medium heat, but next time I want it a bit more spicy. I wanted sweet heat sauce on it. I think there was a slight misunderstanding with that. The sauce that comes on it doesn't have a kick. Quick fix they brought me a side of it. Once I poured that SWEET HEAT SAICE on my chicken sandwich it was magical. My mouth was happy and excited. This sauce definitely makes a difference. You will be singing to the chicken GODS lol. It made the chicken taste so good. The fries were hot, a bit salty for my liking. They give you a generous portion of fries though. The sweet potato fries seem to be the popular choice. Everyone had them on their table. I will have to try those. Overall a very good visit! I left satisfied and FULL! It's a popular place on weekend and they get a good crowd. You can order margaritas, beer or mimosas so that's a bonus. Thanks Cookshack for the hospitality.

It doesn't seem like much sitting in the strip center, but we walked inside. They've got two good size dining areas and plenty of room. Also we enjoyed that they had the football games on TVs in both rooms. The menu appears to be updated almost daily on a chalkboard. It took a minute to look over everything and make a choice. We opted for the fried oysters as an appetizer then I ordered the fish and shrimp plate and my wife ordered the # 7, which today was one cluster snow, crabs, and shrimp. They brought our food out in to go boxes, which is I guess what everybody eats out of. We were both blown away when we opened them up and saw how much food they give you. The portions are huge. My fish and fried shrimp was pretty good. The fish could use a little bit more seasoning, but it was cooked very well and tasted good. The shrimp was really good and once again I was surprised at how big they were. There was a ton of fries and only ate about half of them, but they were good as well. I was very impressed with the fried oysters. They were big oysters and tasted great. My wife loved her snow crab. It comes with tons of potatoes, corn on the cob and several shrimp and we were stuffed by the time we left. We will definitely come back and try something different on the menu next time
