LEGIT! The real-est Japanese food I've had in Bend so far. And I've been to "sushi". While this spot doesn't take the raw fish route, their hot lunches are what I dream about. Like, I get nostalgic when I eat this stuff. Thread noodles (sesame) and cucumbers are both wonderful sides. Katsu is hot and crunchy. I only wish I lived closer. A cozy little shop serving big flavor with its delectable Japanese meals. Makes for the perfect lunch. I miss Asian food while I'm in town and this is the most authentic Japanese cuisine in Bend. The sweet Japanese ladies who run this establishment are very gracious and kind, and the food they prepare has a mother's touch. Definitely pay more for the power rice! All their dishes are great, and I always go back for the Gyudon. It does take a bit for the food to be prepared, so it isn't a bad idea to phone ahead and place your order. read more

We went to Bend Bento today and had a delicious meal in the sunshine. I first noticed how lovely the presentation of our meals were. Our lunches were pridefully made and tasted fabulous! I ordered the Teriyaki Beef Bento Box and my partner ordered the Salmon Bento Box. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The woman who served us, Yoko, was delightful. I so WANT to give these nice people a higher rating because they are SO nice and have all the passion in the world for their little establishment....but... Here's the deal. I am not a Japanese Bento connoisseur but I do like food and my waistline shows it. And I do know a thing or two about business, customer service and the like. Location: Terrible. I feel so bad for these people. I hope they make it. Maybe the rent is cheap. But at the former NY City Sub shop....which had a huge draw from local businesses and contractor's coming and going from neighboring Parr Lumber....I'm cringing thinking Bend-O-Bento is going to suffer some from their location. I hope not, but that is my fear for them. Maybe there will be a loyal following from all around Bend. I hope so. Because they are SO nice. I remember driving up Wilson on several occasions this summer and seeing one of the owners (or employees) standing out by the street in their traditional Japanese kimono and sandals holding a sign....akin to the Little Caeser's lady or the yellow banana dude for Jamba....entreating drivers to try Bend-O-Bento. They looked so nice and friendly, I knew I had to try it. At least once. That day came earlier this summer. Being around the corner from work, I remembered at the last minute (while on my way to another establishment) that we needed to try Bend-O-Bento. Pulled in and as stated in other reviews, it was busy for lunch. The place is small and they have a couch to sit on while your order is being prepared. I would assume most people get their food to go. We did. The atmosphere is great for what it is. Not much you can do in there and they have done a nice job given the size of the place. There were several employees, two of which I concluded were the owners doing the main part of the preparation and cooking. But back to that in a minute. The menu. Maybe it's just me, but standing there reading it, I was a bit confused. I remember just ordering....not REALLY sure what I was going to be getting. And in fact, one of the gals had to clarify what sides I wanted because, "it already came with that." Oh. Uh. Okay. Go with ________. Still not overly sure what the end result was going to be. Watching them prepare the meals was a treat though. Again, you can see the care they take in making sure EVERYTHING is just so. A lot being said for the owner's taking an active part and overseeing everything. As such, it's SLOOOOOW. This is not fast food even though a majority of patrons probably get their meals to go. Fresh? YES! No doubt about it. But here's the pinch: When I got back to the office and pulled out two lunches for my wife and I...trying to vary the selection as much as possible to get the best sampling....it ultimately was just so so. My wife didn't like it at all. I kept saying, "But they are so nice. They tried so hard. Here, try a bite of this...." but in the end, she said "Nope. Not a fan." And being as opened minded as I am about trying new things and varying my tastes, I have to say I'm not really a fan either. Still trying to give the benefit of the doubt, maybe it's just that I'm not a fan of "authentic Japanese bento" and because these people are SO nice.... I gotta go with 3 stars. read more

Best Bento I've found in town! I love good Bento and Bend-O Bento is at the the top of my list for sure. Great food, well prepared and well presented. Definitely going to be a regular stop for me. My only complaint is that they're only open for lunch till 3:00 so pick up on the way home for an easy dinner may take some planing. Hopefully the fine folks there will make my dream come true and add a dinner shift. Great place and working on this review as solidified my lunch choice today. Bend-O Bento here I come! read more

Food made with love and authenticity, it is​ absolutely delicious. Definitely a take out place, which is fine as you will not want to get up after eating one of their boxes, very generous​, so enjoy it at home. Was in bend for a few days on business and was craving a Japanese bento. I know, very specific. Searched yelp and bam! Exactly what I was craving here in bend. Went down and got their bento special with chicken and fried shrimp. Amazing! Best fried shrimp I've ever had. Super crispy and very flavorful. What a hidden gem here in Bend! The ladies in there are the loveliest people and were so accommodating! We picked up a few meals for the office and everybody only had great things to say about their lunches. They even made a special meal for a vegetarian that made all the meat eaters jealous! Stoped by for a second trip during the curbside pickup restrictions. Was very impressed with the courteous service. Best teriyaki chicken in bend hands down. Excellent and flavorful sides. I need to get back and try other meal options but the teriyaki chicken is so good its hard to dive deeper. Wonderful place run by 2 caring, helpful, and friendly Japanese women. The chicken katsu is cooked perfectly and tasty. Their cucumber salad and bean noodle salad is yummy also. So is their macaroni salad. Curry has a good bite to it. Their beef teriyaki with onions has great flavor. Chicken teriyaki has a good char on it that gives it extra flavor. We will definitely be back here when we visit Bend. read more

Such a small place but the food is the bomb! I tried their "bibinbap" I don't know if the spelling is right but this one is one of the best! It's actually a Korean type of food but they nailed it! Finally got the chance to come here after hearing great things about this place. I'm so happy that my partner and I decided to eat here. It's such a hidden gem, tucked away in a business complex and easy to miss as you drive past. The nondescript building belies the fact that an awesome restaurant exists here. I almost don't wanna share about the delicious food and incredible service we received. I don't want this place to get crowded. Then again, I want Yuki and her staff to make loads of money and succeed. In a town like Bend where restaurants come and go, this restaurant deserves more patronage. We ordered a bento box with shrimp, chicken, rice, glass noodles, pickled cucumber, and mac salad. We also had the salmon onigiri and a kids bento with teriyaki chicken, broccoli, a side, and it came with a Japanese eraser. The miso soup was the best I've ever had. The location is hard to find but once you find it you will be rewarded with home made Japanese food! I had one of the bento boxes and it was delicious and filling. A small, casual lunch spot serving authentic Japanese food. I've eaten here several times and always enjoy the experience. The menu offers interesting selections one would find at a better Tokyo luncheonette. The food is tasty and well prepared and the side dishes are delicious and different -- especially some of the smaller sides at the end of the menu, yum! The rice bowls are all a real treat. The bento boxes are terrific as is the Korean Bibimbap. The Gyudon is an uncommon dish in the US (home-style grilled onions & beef) and it is particularly yummy. And yes, there are also vegetarian & gluten-free items for the food neurotics. The prices have gradually crept up in the past couple years and are now a bit high. But, given the quality of the food, the value is still there. The two Japanese women owners also prepare the food and work the counter. They couldn't be more gracious and welcoming. The restaurant is open only for lunch from 10:30am to 3:00pm Monday thru Friday. If you're looking for a tasty lunch during the work week that will keep you smiling the entire afternoon, try Bend-O Bento. read more

When I read how they started the business, I was moved. My husband was on a business trip to Japan in March, 2011 and had a narrow escape during the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. We had to stop by at this place while driving through Bend to go back to California from Seattle even though we had a late breakfast and weren't hungry at all. We felt bad about ordering only gyoza and a rice (power rice) ball but the lady who took the order was extremely generous. The food had the taste of Japanese mother's home cooking. Best Japanese in town! You can't get more authentic than actual Japanese people making home-style recipies like Gyudon (seasoned beef) and Tonkatsu. I also recommend the Bibimbap: not technically Japanese, but really yummy. The Salmon Bento is also recommended. Great service, super friendly ladies running this place! Love this place. My fav is the beef curry. Small inside, but a 'bento' place, by default, suggests a 'to-go' status. There is a very limited bit of seating, inside, if really needed. Great food, love to take it out to a park during my lunch break and enjoy the weather, when it's nice. read more

FANTASTIC!!!! I lived in Japan for 15 years and have been longing for a place like this in Bend. I went there opening day and it was just like being back in Japan. The service was great, the fast action of the cooks...sorry chefs... was just like Japan. I was even more thrilled when I got home and opened up the bento box. I had the tofu burger that was better than a beef burger, the white rice was fresh out of the cooker with just the right amount of black sesame seeds on the top of it. There was a pickled plum in the rice, just like Japan, and two small sides of potato salad & noodle salad. Yum Yum! Today I called in and ordered take out. After picking up my order and reaching my destination I realized part of my order was missing. Not two minutes later my phone rang, and it was the kind woman from the restaurant calling to tell me that she realized she forgot part of my order and she was sorry. I've been back to Bend-O Bento several times since my first visit...Went again today -- almost a year since my first experience -- and brought some friends with me. I was pretty hungry, having saved my appetite for the occasion, and when my salmon bento arrived I thought there was no way I would be able to eat it all. Guess what: I did. These women are amazingly talented. I had no doubts that my friends would love it and they did indeed. They were already planning their next visit as we pulled out of the parking lot.
