Was anxious to try this restaurant as I was in Canton for the high school football games. I ordered the lunch special herbed halibut. The dish came with broccoli that was rotten. It did not take much effort to see the dark areas on at least half of it. I guess in Canton, Ohio eating in allegedly one of the better restaurants for a $25 lunch fresh broccoli is extra. We had another nice meal here. My wife had the halibut breaded with Ritz crackers. Strange sounding but good. I had the best prepared walleye ever. In addition we had foie gras and calamari. Free parking after 4:00! I sat at the bar and ate. I ordered the Walleye Pickerel, as a fisherman I know there's no such thing. There are walleye which is the largest member of the perch family and pickerel are the smallest member of the pike family. I asked which I was ordering and didn't get an answer. It arrived and it was walleye. Which is what I expected being less than 100 miles from Lake Erie. So with that out of the way it was delicious, cooked perfectly, I had a side salad with a homage blue cheese dressing (100%) and the Bender Fries, very thinly sliced potato's pan fried. They were a little oily but that's to be expected with that preparation. Overall a great experience. So as long as I'm on it, they had Chilean Sea Bass on the menu. Again, this fish doesn't exist It's a Wolf fish, I get that Wolf fish isn't sexy and people won't order it. But then they had Arctic wolf fish on the menu. So what's the Chilean Sea Bass? I'm assuming the food distributors they buy from are making up the names. The chef is just ordering off a price list I assume. This is the hill I'm dying on. Out on the town for my grandparents' 72nd anniversary, and this couldn't have been a better place for a celebratory meal. The food was outstanding (I had a drool-worthy filet with dry roquefort cheese and sautéed onions, which needed no other accompaniment than a dry glass of red wine), the atmosphere was dressy but relaxed while being sufficiently quiet enough for conversation, and the staff was wonderfully accommodating! Our waitress Gabby, especially, was a joy and a flawless hostess. I don't live in town, but will definitely put this on my list for next time I return! read more

My husband and I had dinner Monday, 6/26/23 and like always it was fabulous. They were extremely busy as they had several large parties going on, but you would never had known it. Our food was served in the same high quality that Benders is know for. My steak was cooked to perfection, my husband had a fish entree and it was delicious. We sat in the bar and our waitress Patty was great. She was friendly, knowledgeable of the menu, and very attentive. This of course is not the first time we have dined here. Benders served our rehearsal dinner for our wedding over 30 years ago. My husband and I frequently come to Benders for dinner and for lunch and can honestly say they have the best food and the best service in town. Holy cow, this place was amazing. I was so blown away. We were in town for a wedding at Gervasi (which was beautiful!!) but needed a place for dinner the night before. I stopped here, due to the rich history. First of all, I always appreciate a restaurant that feels sort of like a maze when you stop in. A lot of smaller intimate rooms... you are totally speaking my language. The service was incredible, attentive and informative without being overwhelming. The crabmeat cocktail and stuffed flounder were the Crown Jewels in our meal. However, nothing can overshadow the bender fries! This place was exceptional. I was impressed that we a party of 4 got in in a timely manner, until we ordered our drinks. Well let's just say it took about 25 minutes to get our drinks then we finally ordered our food, needless to say after about an hour it finally showed up! Delicious food in Canton's oldest restaurant. What's not to love?! Was in the mood for some good seafood and stumbled upon this place online. In the heart of Canton, this restaurant is historic and sticks to its roots even today. A step back in time allowed me to try Turtle Soup, a tomato based sweet soup served with a shot of sherry. You heard me right. And you pour the shot INTO the soup. I'm sure if you take the shot before trying the soup you would get the same effect, but it was more fun to mix, and absolutely delicious. For my entree, i ended up ordering the Roasted Haddock with broccoli and cauliflower gratin. Delicious and filling, i had to take half home, but am looking forward to eating the rest for dinner. Or before dinner. Or as soon as I get home. Service was friendly and helpful and answered any/all questions i brought their way. Bill was under $25 including tip. My husband and I went to Bender's on our first date so he brought me to Bender's for my birthday last night as a surprise. He requested that we be served by Jim who had served us over a year ago. Jim was more than happy to tell us about the history of the restaurant and was very knowledgable about food and wine. The atmosphere is romantic and the historic building is beautiful - it's as if one had walked back in time! The waitstaff is accommodating and professional. The wine list is thoughtful and well put together, albeit expensive. They have a special list of wines that are offered by the glass and this list changes frequently. We had the Turtle Soup (complete with a shot of Sherry which accentuates the sweetness of the soup), raw oysters on the half shell (3 Wellfleet oysters and 3 Bay Point oysters), roasted Sea Bass on hummus with Brussels sprouts, sauteed sea scallops, and a casserole-type spaghetti squash with onions, fresh tomatoes, cream cheese. Excellent! As my birthday dessert I received a dish of vanilla ice cream with an AMAZING peanut butter sauce and a birthday candle! Went to Benders for lunch with my dad. It is an amazing historical place praised for its seafood. In the old days this place was divided by gender. Gotta love that and for its history I give it four instead of three stars. I will confess up front that I am not a seafood fan. So there wasn't a ton on the menu I was anxious to try. Our amazing waiter who was great at describing everything though, he made me want to want to try it. He was also extremely attentive and friendly. I ended up with the Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich and fries. It was eh, just ok. Nothing to write home about, in fact I would never eat it again. The seafood entrees looked a lot better, if only I liked seafood. I did try a cup of the chili and that was delicious. I"d probably go back to the place and try something else. I have eaten and Benders for over fifty years. I am so disappointed. One of my favorites has been scrod. I've actually become accustomed to their excellent scrod in the past. Unfortunately recently the scrod looks more like tilapia. It tastes more like tilapia. Farm raised at that! Something has happened to the establishment. I will no longer visit there. Was in town to help my kids move. Kids wanted to treat me to a nice dinner after a long day of hard work. The waitstaff was Rude. We only saw our waiter when he absolutely had to come to our table. One of the 3 meals at our table 1 was okay, I give you that. I saw baskets of bread on every table when we were seated. I love bread. We got none until I asked and we were half way through our meal when it finally got to us. One plates' 2 sides were rice and french fries. The rice was overcooked and cold. It was so bad I took a picture. The fries were cold hash-browns smashed into a puddle of oil. Oil was cold. Both completely uneatable. I'm sure that had our parents or grandparents ate at this restaurant the staff would have been way more accommodating. 30 years ago I said I would never again live in the mid-west and after this soul-crushing experience I remember why. Ohio is in the top 10% of states with people relocating out. If Benders Tavern's culture exemplifies life in Ohio I totally understand why people leave. We met here as a group of six after a long day of work. Our orders comprised of tandoori pork chops, fish and potatoes and steaks. Two steaks in our party changed hands three times for improper cooking per order. Medium was well and medium rare was medium. Three times and no meal comp for a bill of over 300.00.
