I've been a huge Benihana fan since I was a kid, and the downtown Peachtree Center location was always one of my favorite spots before it closed. That place was clean, vibrant, diverse, and had a welcoming, family-friendly vibe that made every visit feel special. So, I was really excited to return for a birthday celebration, but sadly, this visit, along with my last one in Alpharetta, didn't live up to those memories. The atmosphere wasn't what I hoped for. It was so loud that it was difficult to hold a normal conversation at our table. Benihana used to feel like a universal, family-oriented spot where people connected, but this location leaned more toward a party or hipster crowd, which dampened the experience. Even before stepping inside, the smell of weed in the parking lot set an off vibe. Once seated, the people at our table came across as aloof, unfriendly, and overly demanding. In the past, meeting new table mates was part of the fun and ritual, this time it felt awkward and isolating. It's now happened to me on two visits in a row, which is concerning. Bringing a big group of 8+ seems to help, but I shouldn't have to rely on that just to enjoy the night. On the bright side, the hostess who seated us was fantastic, very friendly, attentive, and gave me hope for a good evening. She even refilled my lemonade without me noticing or asking, which is excellent customer service and something others could learn from. Unfortunately, the rest of the service didn't live up to that standard. We felt overlooked much of the night while some people seated right next to us seemed to get more attention. I've seen reviews praising a chef named Jose, and I wish we'd gotten him, because our chef felt very different. He was a younger guy who came across as disengaged and dismissive, just going through the motions instead of bringing the fun, energy, and interaction that make Benihana special. When we spoke up, he acted like he couldn't hear us, and when we finally did get his attention, our requests felt like an afterthought. At one point, hot oil splattered onto me and my brother, and instead of apologizing, he brushed it off completely. That was both careless and disappointing. The food itself was still tasty overall, but not prepared the way it should've been. The garlic butter was overused, leaving dishes greasy and mushy. The steak, chicken, and shrimp were overcooked, likely because the chef defaulted to well-done after some table mates requested it, but in the process, our own instructions were ignored. At Benihana, those details matter, and getting them wrong really takes away from the experience. It feels like this location (and Alpharetta as well) has shifted from the classic Benihana formula toward a high-volume, fast-paced approach. The result is less attentiveness, less quality control, and an atmosphere that feels impersonal compared to the warm, diverse, and engaging Peachtree Center days. Back then, all the sauces were ready without having to ask, portions were consistent, and the staff really brought the experience to life. Those are the things that made Benihana memorable, and what Master Aoki built the brand on. Benihana has always been a go-to spot for me, so it really hurts to write this review because I have such a soft spot for it. I'm not ready to give up on it, but I'd need to see improvements in customer service, food quality, and atmosphere before I feel the same love again. Well if you didn't know now you know I am a hibachi fanatic and usually I like to stop in at a small spot called extreme teriyaki to pick up food to take home, but I decided it was time to sit unless someone cooking in front of me!! When you walk into Benihana's, it is very dim lighting. It is the most intimate setting that you can have. The bathroom was extremely clean. The bar even was clean and smelled really nice. Although the lights are dim the music is low and it's setting you up for a very intimate setting , once the cooks get to going the flares in the tricks make this a really fun time! Of course I got my usual teriyaki chicken and shrimp with fried rice. I don't eat beef so chicken and seafood are always going to be a go to for me Benihana extremely with this teriyaki sauce a lot of times teriyaki sauce can be loose and runny. This was thick and stuck to the food and it was packed with so much flavor and sweetness . Our cook was very personable. He asked a lot of questions he asked about any allergies he asked were we OK with certain foods touching each other. He made sure that any tricks as far as fire and oil was concerned wasn't alarming to anybody and our entire group appreciate that. Now at Benihana's, you can go with two or six people however the smaller your group the bigger the chances are you may sit at the table with another group. Sometimes it can be awkward because you're sitting with strangers and most cases because of the interaction that you have with the cook, it does become a fun time . I had 2 reservations for May 13,2026 for 9:45 & 10pm for my daughter's graduation dinner as this is her favorite place to eat!!! I got a call from the restaurant Manager Derek who wanted to inform me that they closed at 10pm and we would need to be there by 9:30pm. I advised him that the graduation was running a little behind, but we were up the street and would do our best to get there by 9:30pm and thanked him for the courtesy call. At that time graduation was already running behind & was supposed to be over by 8:30pm; but it's to be expected as this was a big moment for this kids!!! So as graduation ended, it was 9:17pm and we were 14 minutes away. We got there is was 9:40pm and as we got to the door the amazing security advised that they were closing as I'm standing there with nine hungry young adults. I advised that I spoke to Derek the manager and he advised he would just need to confirm with him really quick. I walked in with the security and he got Derek and I told him I was Tay and we had just spoke on the phone during the graduation. He asked was all of the party here and at the time the other car had made a wrong turn and was arriving in the next 5 minutes. So he told the amazing security guard to let us in and also the other car that had made the wrong turn. The restaurant had 1 family that was there and they were almost finished eating and now it was 18 people coming in at closing time and I understand people were to be getting off as they closed at 10pm!! When I say that Derek had them sit us as he nor the security didn't want to ruin moment! The cooks at both tables and the servers were absolutely superb. My family of 3 made the extremely poor choice of eating here yesterday, 3/13/26. I should have read some recent reviews prior to coming. We arrived shortly before 5 pm. We each ordered a bar drink & soft drink plus Hibachi Meals. The only positive highlight was the exotic Mojito which was excellent. We each had what is touted as " 6 courses". The waiter took orders & when the chef came out he confirmed. With the $7 up charge for Vegetable fried rice, one would expect it to at least have some amount of flavor /seasoning. It was extremely bland. The " vegetables " were scarce. The chef seemed to do things very backwards & with only 1 item on the grill at a time. Allergies not the reason as the waiter, chef, & a manager all confirmed " no allergies " to the table. In addition to no entertainment of any kind ( onion volcano, etc) the " "appetizer Shrimp" were the very last thing served. The " Colossal Shrimp & " Appetizer shrimp" were all dumped together for cooking so impossible to tell if you had an entree shrimp as the protein if you even got what you ordered correctly. The Chef had " extra shrimp" at the end & dumped them all in the plate of someone who hadn't even ordered shrimp rather than distributing it to people who hadn't ordered/paid for that protein. My son's steak order was given to another patron & the chef seemed more interested in proving the waiter at fault than just correcting the problem. zucchini, mushrooms, & onion were each cooked separately, started separately & all coming out at the oddest of time. Order of food served as follows: Soup ( this was actually the most flavorful & best part of the meal) Salad Rice Zucchini Steak Onion Chicken Mushroom Scallop Shrimp Green Tea Never came Sherbet was Freezer Burned One member of the table asked about terrayki sauce or garlic butter & was told $2 charge each for those. The portions including the vegetables were very small. To emphasize the Zucchini for 7 people was visibly 1 zucchini that was horizontally sliced resulting in 4-5 small pieces of zucchini each. We were told there was a 30 minute wait with 4 names above us on the list. We did not get seated until 8:30pm. The cook didn't come out until 9:30pm. By the time we received our food, the fatigue factor kicked in and we mostly took our food to go. I personally ordered the Benihana Trio. Staff was friendly but they had an attitude of hanging out instead of working. The grill had leftover food from last party. The food Was below standard for Benihana. For a $10 dish, all she got was a small takeout bowl like what you get wonton soup in with some brown rice and three little shrimp on top. It was more like a snack instead of lunch. -What were supposed to be hibachi vegetables were just sautéed mushrooms, green peppers, and onions. I could've done better with my microwave. So that was my Sunday birthday lunch for my mother. $250 for four people plus that snack rice dish. This restaurant has been around much too long and obviously doesn't care what they're serving to their patrons. The fact that they are still open, still serving, and charging the prices that they charge tells me that they are depending on patrons who obviously have no taste for good food. Never again! When we did get sat, it took an additional hour before they started cooking our food. Clearly everybody was celebrating their birthday that day. They gave us the soup and salad to soften the blow. TL;DR - DO NOT GO HERE. Horrible service and hostile dining experience. I dined here with a party of 10 on Monday 12/23 for a special Christmas dinner with my family. We had a reservation for 10 people at 6:30pm. Despite having a reservation we were finally sat almost two hours later and an hour after that, we finally got our salads... During our visit we witnessed 3 fights break out in the restaurant - in addition to a woman coming inside screaming that hers and multiple other cars in the parking lot (7+) had been broken into. This obviously caused even more chaos and yet another fight - it was an absolutely unbelievable and uncomfortable dining experience that left my family members shaken and my nephew in tears. The armed security guard stationed at the host desk should have given a sign to the experience that we were about to have. Despite waiting 2 hours for a table and another hour on top of that for our food to arrive, when we approached the "Manager" (who spent most of the night glued to his phone in the corner) regarding how terrible our experience had been (this was before the fights and break ins) rather than be apologetic, he was absolutely rude and condescending. During our overall 4 hour dinner ordeal I saw several tables abandon their tables due to the lack of service and overall uncomfortable ambiance. What an absolute terrible experience overall and Benihana should be ashamed to have this restaurant as part of their portfolio. I will be contacting HQ for further comment and compensation. The host just was rude and kept saying there are people ahead of me, I get there are people ahead of me, but don't make reservations if they can't accommodate. We came to Benihana with the intent of celebrating a loved one's birthday, and that couldn't be further from the experience we had at this particular location. We made reservations days in advance, only to be seated more than an hour after our reservation time and ultimately did not dine at this establishment. From the moment we arrived (might I add we were advised of a strict arrival time policy, which they clearly did not adhere to the inverse of their policy). As we inquired on the status of our table, we were greeted with rude staff and later learned that this establishment uses reservations for general awareness only. Once we were seated we were greeted with plates that clearly had excess debris from prior patrons. We sat and sat as well over 20 minutes passed before any one of the staff even asked if we wanted anything to drink. We then advised that plates left at our table were dirty and were then met with a server who began inspecting plates and attempted to say some of the plates were clean, which we immediately refuted. We requested to speak to the manager and after waiting an additional 20+ minutes that person never arrived. We eventually flagged a server that took our order for drinks and food only to find ourselves yet again sitting. We ultimately as a group recognized that this experience did not represent the celebration we intended and made a decision to leave.. Our server informed us that Benihana Buckhead had decided not to offer lunch on Fridays--they had made that decision a month earlier with no notice (I'm on the mailing list for offers, etc.) We were about to leave, and the server brought us the lunch menus to order from. We acknowledge that surviving the pandemic and mass inflation during the past five years have forced many restaurants to raise prices (the lunch menu prices have increased significantly in the past few years), but lunch is within our budget. Dinner is not. The food was delicious and our server and chef were very attentive to all our needs. However, we were seriously distracted and put out by the manager and an employee cleaning the ceiling vents over our table and others while over our plates before our food was served. There was no effort to change out the plates, nor was anyone willing to stop cleaning while anyone was in the restaurant dining. I was under the impression that the regional health codes prohibit this type of cleaning activity while customers are in dining in the restaurant. 1) I hope they address this incident so that no one is affected by ceiling cleaning during operating hours. 2) I also hope that Benihana Buckhead brings back lunch on Fridays and that no one else is surprised to see dinner menus during lunch time. So I've been to Benihana plenty of times. This was probably one of the best experiences that I've had. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because it had us waiting forever. I had 8:00 reservations and didn't get sent to probably around 8:30 or so. But after that, everything did look up. Chef Chris was at our table when he was phenomenal. I've had plenty of chefs come and do the cook-up at the table, but he was engaging with us, he showed us little tricks that we haven't seen before, he was funny, he was responsive in communicative, he was an excellent chef. Now I see why the stars are so low. Our Reservations were for 645. We were seated at 8 o'clock. I overheard one of the managers State that they were shortstaffed today. Oddly, not my problem. Whew where do I start. Ima start with the food was awesome our chef was the best "Chef Dakwon" he had an amazing amount of energy and enthusiasm. My children loved him they thought he was funny! He prepared our food perfectly everything was delicious!!! The negative side of things! I just knew by making reservations on open table I was going to get there and the table was going to be ready. I was absolutely wrong. I am not from the area but have heard great things about their food. So I thought I'd give it a try with my family. Our open table reservation was for like 8 WE DID NOT SIT AT OUR TABLE UNTIL 10:30! Mind you they close at 10. We were the last table leaving at 12:15ish. It was beyond ridiculous how long we had to wait. They need to have accurate information for reservations. I have never been in a restaurant that long in my life. From my experience I do not recommend this business due to the wait times. The staff was great but I still don't like waiting when I'm hungry. read more
