My son loves Benihana so we will splurge to get meals but on the last two take outs they have left off items we paid for and it's too far to go back. On this last order we paid extra for fried rice and didn't receive it this time or last. We always order extra but when we order it with the meal they leave it out. Bought 2 hibachi meals and received sauces and salad for one. I wasn't charged extra for the sauces but we assumed the salad came with each meal. For the price they are now charging for a meal perfection should be their goal on take out. Tried calling but Friday nights are impossible to get someone. We've dined at this location many times and this was by far the worst experience. We arrived for our reservation and joined a table that had three people already at it. I don't know how long they had been sitting before we arrived, but no one came to check in with us- no server, no manager, no one for 30 minutes. My dining partner then went to the host station to share that we were still waiting for service and was ignored for about 5 minutes. When the server did finally come over she started chatting with us and I directed her to take the order of the other people as they were there before us. After the orders were finally taken, someone dropped off tempura shrimp for my party and the other people at the table. Nice gesture, however they were soggy and undercooked. When it came time for the meal- it felt very rushed. Typically the soup arrives before the salad but both were sloppily placed in front of us at the same time. The chef making the meal was nice, but overcooked the scallops we ordered and soaked them in so much liquid that they didn't even get a nice sear. They were basically steam cooked to the consistency of memory foam. Also, when he served the chicken fried rice, he only half filled the bowls- leaving an entire portion left on the grill which he served to the guest who didn't order chicken fried rice. Nice of him to give it to her, however, the rest of us actually paid for it and did not receive the full portion. At least the filet mignon I ordered was cooked to perfection. The mushrooms and zucchini were also severely overcooked. Then to contrite with the trend of feeling rushed, the server asked us if we wanted boxes as we were still actively eating our meals. Both my dining party and the other party at the table were celebrating birthdays. Typically they give a choice for the ice cream dessert- chocolate, vanilla, or sherbet. There was no choice given. The server simply provided my group with vanilla and the other group with the sherbet. Went there with a few colleagues, our chef was definitely an entertainer. We had the Suigei sake which was pretty strong and had a good flavor that complimented our meat. I got the seafood diablo, my colleagues got the hibachi steak and chicken & steak. All meals at Benihana come with a 5/6 course combination. The soup was alright, salad- delicious, mushrooms - wow!!, hibachi vegetables- alright, hibachi sauces- just alright, my seafood Diablo noodles were reallly really good. The ice cream at the end was pretty decent too. My colleagues enjoyed their steak too. The chicken on my colleagues meal was a bit too chewy. Overall ambience is alright. I went with my family which made us a party of 7 and right away our server made sure we were taken care of. They seated us at one of their larger tables/grills and the service we received throughout our meal was just what you want when you go out to eat. My cucumber rolls were a mess and I had no clue which sauces went with what dishes, labeling wouldn't hurt. The Shogun platter was enjoyed by many, but I was told they had too many cream cheese rolls(Philadelphia and Alaskan). My vegetable tempura was great, actually. Hopefully I used the correct sauce with it! What truly irked me was the shrimp hibachi. Minus the dining experience I am unsure how they can still charge full price of $30 for about 18 tiny shrimp, white rice, a salad, soup, and some sauteed vegetables. I personally consider myself a Brand Ambassador for Benihana and the Aoki family. I recently moved to Illinois from New York and naturally I was quick to search "Benihana near me" in my internet browser. I found that the Lombard location was nearest to me and promptly made a reservation for me and m'lady later that evening. As soon as I entered the Restaurant I was greeted with the scintillating scents of the Hibachi Dojo. There were Teppanyaki Tables for as far as the eye could see in every direction. The wait-staff was predominantly Asian, which added to the authentic feel of the restaurant. As always, the food was delicious. From the chicken fried rice to the steak and shrimp of my Splash & Meadow. The cocktails were outstanding and of course we finished off the meal with some tasty scoops of ice cream. Not only did they NOT pay, but throughout the service, they complained about the cooking, ordered food in excess, and took 4 to-go containers home! It's so hard to give this place anything more than the ordinary 3 stars. There is nothing incredible about the food and it's extremely overpriced. You are basically paying the additional fees for the entertainment of watching someone cook for you. I'd rather skip the show, drop the prices and give me some good food. Just to give you an idea, the bill for 7 adults with drinks was over $550. Those that are unfamiliar with this place, I'll give you the brief run down. You pick an entree you'd like prepared in front of you. You basically are picking your protein whether it be beef, chicken, seafood, or the many combinations of three. Included with that you get an onion soup starter. It's alright, nothing special, and just an onion based broth. A small side salad with an onion ginger vinaigrette. And then some standard warm appetizers prepared in front of you. Grilled onions, grilled zucchini, small pieces of shrimp. If you want fried rice with your meal, it's an additional $4.20 per person. This is where the bill can quickly add up. Lol. As far as portion size, it's smaller than a pint of ice cream. The food itself is just alright, and nothing special. The filet in the combination trio that I got seemed of very low quality and it's not a lot of food you are getting. For the prices, please just give me a full chicken breast instead of a quarter of one. I'll include pictures of the menu and food so you can see portion sizes. If you've never been, go once to experience. This isn't a place you would frequent just due to the prices and lesser quality of food. Remember, you're paying for the show. Yes, yes, this restaurant has become commercial with it's several locations but don't doubt the lunch specials! You can order steak and scallops without sinking your wallet to the bottom of the ocean. To skip the wait of sitting with complete strangers, we opted to sit in the sushi lounge. A quieter and more private space for your one on one conversations. Besides, if you don't want to smell like an iron skillet after leaving, due to the hibachi steam aroma, make your way right and sit by the sushi chefs. Overall, one star for ambience seating options, one star for variety of food selections, one star for lunch prices, one star for sushi or steak and minus one star as they don't serve the ever so famous at hibachi grills, "Golden /Yolk special sauce." Visited this Benihana with a party of seven celebrate my grandson's 16th birthday. Keep in mind that Benihana is not really a fine dining experience but much more of a show for teens and young twenties. The show part was excellent with spinning eggs and lots of chopping. The food itself was just average. The sushi and sashimi were not the freshest, Other items I tasted were sort of bland. Food was mostly American interpretations of Japanese cuisine, meaning not up to the standard of an authentic japanese restaurant. I've had better food in little hole in the wall restaurants in Japan. Other than the initial wait for the chef, service was fine and attentive. Pricing is over the top. You are paying for the chef to show off his skills, not for the quality of the food. Been coming here for over 20 years. Used to visit the restaurant downtown on Erie (?) for years until they closed then we started coming to this location. Sometimes we visit the new location in the John Hancock building but parking downtown is hit or miss. It was Mother's Day and we were told that there were no reservations until 9:30pm. We headed out after 8pm and upon arrival the place was half full so we were seated right away. As a side note about this location....their hours are based on the whims of the manager. Three times in the past we have arrived at this location and they are closing early. Because of this, we usually take anything that is said regarding availability with a grain of salt. Service is standard here and so is the food. We would come here because our kids ate all of their food. I ordered the Hibachi Supreme and shared with my husband. They ask ahead of time what temperature you want food cooked and attempt to meet that goal. It's definitely a good idea to keep an eye on your steak or lobster tail so that it won't be over cooked. I ordered chicken fried rice, my husband ordered shrimp fried rice, and my daughter ordered spicy chicken friend rice. Their fried rice is usually great, probably because it's nice and fresh. The filet was ok but a little fatty-ish for my taste but I ate 90% of it. The lobster tail tasted fresh. It's a small portion. We had to ensure it wasn't over cooked. The people sitting at the table with us had a lobster tail as well and cooked it to the point I felt sorry for the dam thing. To each his own. An old time fave for hibachi..... They've been around for years! I've been numerous occasions. Sometimes good, sometimes just ok, only once bad (Schaumburg location). Took the kiddos in for a quick meal. It was 4 of us & another nice family of 3 we sat with. We all had steak, chicken, & shrimp w/reg steamed rice & veggies. Everything was cooked as requested med & med rare steaks. The chef was nice and fun. The other servers was pleasant as well. We had an enjoyable dinner. A semi-regular place for me and my friend to meet up during the lunch hour when we want sushi. Just a nice and right location for both of us. And we could always get our favorite table on the window side. Most times, I get the lunch boat with Salmon for $9.25 which comes with a salad, miso soup, edamame, sashimi, 4 pieces of California rolls, shrimp and veggie tempura, half orange and hot green tea. A very good deal indeed for a healthy Japanese lunch. Everything is pretty good but not exciting. We also has tried all kinds different sushi. Frankly they are all decent but lack of a Wow factor. We reserve the dinner time for kids especially when a few families go together. Hibachi is always my kids' favorite dinner. They enjoy the cooking show while they eat their food without complaining. A Win-win for kids and moms! I like the food but grilled meat and fried rice are a bit greasy and a bit salty for me. So sometimes I opt to have the Sushi rolls or a noodle soup. Dined at Benihana in Lombard, IL on August 9, 2021 for lunch. Communicating with the waiter was quite difficult as she did not speak clear english. We ordered an appetizer of tempura fried shrimp with tempura fried zucchini. The shrimp and zucchini tasted very good. The entrees were the Chicken and Shrimp Delight Dinner. We ordered the chicken fried rice with the entrees. The entrees and rice were delicious. The entrees came with onion soup, Benihana salad, and grilled shrimp and vegetables.
