Always nostalgic going to Ben's but believe this joint has fallen off over the years and the competition has gotten better. I was walking by Ben's Pizzeria and saw the awning, with the claim they have the best Sicilian. Well you know I had to see for myself and I differ from their claim. NY Pizza Supremacy and Prince Street Pizza immediately come to mind and there are others. Service is good here. These are respectable and respectful people who work here. If the claim were ever true, time has passed Ben's Pizzeria by. I had a look at what slices were available and chose the Sicilian Pepperoni Cup and the NY style Buffalo Chicken. That totaled around $13 and you get a free medium or small fountain soda with it if your total is over ten bucks. Nice touch. I reheated the slices in my regular oven at home. The Sicilian Pepperoni has plenty of cups and Fra Diavolo red sauce, but the underlying my mozzarella was not apparent to me. The crust was good and the Fra Diavolo made its presence known, but the mozz didn't show up for me on my palate. It tasted dry to me without the oil from the mozz, unfortunately, and I know they take pride in their pizza. It could use a drizzle of olive oil and a thorough dusting of grated Parmesan. Seriously. Next was the traditional NY style Buffalo Chicken. It too presented a spicy kick, but had the similar dry taste to my palate. At around $6 50 per slice, they could afford to have more cheese on the pizza and drizzle the slices with olive oil. I should have done that at home had I known. My rec would be to take the pizza home, dust it well with Parmesan or any sharp cheese for the pepperoni and some grated mozzarella for the buffalo, and drizzle some olive oil and that should awaken the pizza and prevent it from coming across dry to the palate. The pizza game has stepped up in NYC and it seems Ben's Pizzeria has not stepped with it. 3.0 stars read more

I was in the area for an event, and wanted a quick bite, so I stopped at Ben's for the first time in over 15 years. Its still as rough and tumble as ever, with pies on display. This is an OLD school, grab and go joint. Do not expect fancy anything, solely, a solid slice after a night of pregaming or drinking. Pizza is mid. Be careful with Apple Pay as they will try and charge you twice saying, "First tap didn't go through." Once you leave the place they add both charges. I went back and they tried to play it off. Go to a 1.50 slice place as 6 dollars a slice isn't it for this place. read more

I picked up a meatball slice and it was pretty good. Nice and crunchy crust on the bottom, though the meatball didn't taste like much. There's quite a bit of room in here to have a seat and eat, though it looks pretty old everywhere. Staff were decent. read more

It is such a great divey place. It's a barebones pizza joint. Literally! The man taking the order and cooking the pizza was so nice! I was allowed to bring pomme frites and eat them with my slices (if they didn't allow I was just going to eat at the park nbd). I got a veggie slice and a margarita. I started with the margarita. It was delicious and crispy. I'd like to highlight the nicely acidic tomato sauce! Ample basil. Could use a tiny more mozzarella. But still really good. And veggie pizza is my jam. So no notes there from me there. There are both bar high tables and small booths. So I found it very useful. I can't believe I just tried this place. Never tried all my years there in school. It's located so conveniently to the school. Best for drunchies or late night munchies. read more

For late night pizza, Ben's will do the trick. There's some places to sit or stand and they have a decent variety of slices to choose from. The crust on my slice was cooked well, but the sauce was lacking in the flavor department for me. I actually looked around for some garlic salt to spike the flavor, but I couldn't find any which was a bummer. The later you come the better it will taste... I went for the Sicilian slice, fast, cheap and pretty basic. This spot is very popular after midnight, located right down the block from Washington Square Park and close to a lot of bars. Ambiance and vibe is no-frills 90s cafeteria so lower your expectations, eat and keep it moving. Free water, friendly service. read more

Came here a few times with the kids so my daughter could get a beef patty cuz Joe's doesn't sell them. Pizza is mediocre, garlic knots were inedible, staff is meh. The last time we went, i got upset with the guy because he was very dismissive to someone else because of how they looked. We ordered two pies ( white pizza and half buffalo chicken and half broccoli chicken) we ended up getting two artichoke slices because there was a piece of hair inside the pizza. The white pizza is my favorite. But the employee wasn't really nice. He's was really short with us and I felt like we were bothering him every time we had to ask or order something. read more

Got a plain slice of cheese pizza for 2.75. It has a crispy bottom and it's not soggy. It tastes like a regular pizza - oily and fresh. The seating is really awkward - they have two chairs placed outside, but facing inward. The interior is typical of any pizza place. There's no air conditioning - only fans. It's a good pizza place to just grab and go, not to sit down and enjoy the slice. Would I come here again? Sure if I'm nearby, but there's nothing special. I'd go to another place and checkout there pizza since there are so many in this area. read more

Came here to this old skool pizzeria on Macdougal and West 3rd Street on May 25, 2023 that's been here since the 1960's. Not a good pizzeria by any stretch of the imagination! I had just left Washington Square Park and got hungry walking to here and thought I'd get a slice here (I've eaten here before when the pizza was 'okay' but no great shakes). What a disaster this slice! Tasteless and a shame ... I will never again get pizza or anything else here! Ambiance was okay but certainly not comfortable. During a day of walking around NYC we came here for a late lunch. There was one other couple in there when we walked in, and they finished and left shortly thereafter. The employee greeted us and let us check out the pizza options. I got a slice of Sicilian and my husband got a slice of Supreme. The employee put them in the oven to reheat and get nice and crispy. After removing the slices and giving them to us, he scraped the oven--something I love to see because I HATE when my pizza tastes burnt. Unfortunately that seems to be very popular in NYC so it's hard for me to find pizza I like so we will definitely be back here! read more

This is an under-rated classic in Greenwich village right on MacDougal. We stopped in for a quick slice and were very happy. The crust is thicker than Joe's but had a nice crispiness. The sauce is flavorful and robust - not just salty, and the best part is that there is a VERY generous amount of mozzarella - the quality kind that gives that perfect string pull when it's hot. It's $3.00 for a slice and one of the better values in the area. Worth a visit! read more

So iconic, such an institution! I've been coming here for decades since I was first coming to the W village. The best part of this place is seeing celebrities walk past on Macdougal. Usually comedians going to the comedy clubs. The pizza is tertiary to the people watching, but it's not bad. Prices are commensurate with the area. Beautifully pillowy crust with a fiery char, and there's a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity from the tomato and savoriness from the pesto. We were curious about the white pizzas so we tried the norma and that one was nice as well with a lot of textures from the eggplant and tomato. Personally prefer the margarita as it seems to be a more well-rounded pizza and the tomato just can't be missed. It was pretty packed inside when we got there and took the bar seating, so would probably recommend a reservation for larger parties (2+) on evenings. Hoping to salvage the meal, I ordered their Chicken Parmesan. It was the Hail Mary pass that unfortunately did not connect. The cutlets are overcooked and dry, and the red sauce cooked with it has minimal tomato flavor. At least the spaghetti is cooked to a nice al dente and mellow garlic butter flavor, but like the sauce cooked in, it is also minimal. Part of the problem I feel is they are trying to go for a vibe that has a New York and modern feel. It does not work. Stay true to one or the other. Or at least look at other business models. I will use another pizzeria in Bushwick that exemplifies it perfectly. It is a hipster pizzeria in a hipster neighborhood. Through balance, it creates an ambiance both welcoming and warm without losing any of its Bushwick character. It does this by not beating you over the head with hipster vibes, just enough to let you know that you are in Bushwick. The band Franz Ferdinand was playing as I was wrapping up. Rather than take the pizza out, I suggest you throw it out. Overall pizza rating: 1.7/5
