I wanted to like Beque BBQ, but it was a let down. I live in the east bay, as we have much better AYCE: Gogi TIme and Jong Ga House (there is also Ohgane, but I am not the biggest fan of it) and they all have 2 thing better: Bancha aka side dishes + meat selection Pros: -Grill does not smoke as much, so you don't smell like you're a KBBQ addict... -Meat isn't frozen when you get it, but that could also be that they defrost it beforehand. Cons: -TAKES FOREVER to get our meat -Bancha is small (only 4), I don't count a small salad or rice paper as bancha. -Apps and stew are not included in the AYCE. (My issue with this is big, as stew should be free with AYCE and not a up charge of money). Now for the meat: Rib Eye Bulgogi: Marinated and had more of a beef flavor then the unmarinated one. Un-Marinated Bulogi: Super Dry and Flavorless (and I cook my meat to just pink) Un-Marinated Pork Belly: Tasty pork belly, but I wish it was thicker, we it felt like bacon. Garlic Pork Belly: Not much of a difference then the regular PB. Spicy Pork: Not spicy, but tastiest of all the meats. Shrimp: Frozen, and hard to peal the shells. Squid: Taster, but I wish they had lemon for me to put over it. Dipping Sauce: C-: There was bean pasta, but the sesame oil was so bland...it could have been corn oil by the color... Overall, it was a disappointment, as it did not feel like a restaurant. I would have preferred more TV, plants and better service. My boyfriend loves to come here for the brisket. It's a good spot if you have a really large group too. it's also relatively cheaper than other AYCE kbbq in SF but they don't include short ribs (additional $$) in AYCE which is disappointing. you're given 4 banchans (kimchee, japchae, bean sprouts and one other one) and they're okay/solid/basic I've been here twice, once with a large group, and it seemed pretty well suited for a large group but this place wouldn't be my first preference. My bf and I came here a few weeks ago because we were craving kbbq. Surprisingly this was a new ayce spot with a reasonable price of $24.99 I believe. The service was pretty good and they checked in on us quite frequently. We started off with the bulgogi, kalbi and pork belly. The bulgogi was in a good marinade and was tasty. The kalbi didn't have too much fat and was good as well. The pork belly was meh, they were big but it didn't taste that great. The banchan was ok, nothing spectacular about it. The grill did get burnt easily and we had quite a few Grill changes even for the small amount that we ate. Like most kbbq places don't wear any nice clothes here cause you will end up smelling like kbbq. Overall, it's a decent kbbq place, I don't have any real complaints. Aside from the initial slow service and the limited amount of choices for meats, I still enjoy this place. It's clean and once they get the service going, they are very attentive (they don't have little server doorbells like the other Korean BBQ places). The choices of meat that they do have are great, clean and delicious! They have the required sesame oil and salt that other places in the area don't have. Meat quality was average. First time I'll ever complain about portions being too big. I would have preferred half the amount so we could order another round with more variety. Our table had one round of 4 meats and couldn't even finish, let alone try anything else on the menu. One pork belly order came with 12 slices and I swear they gave us almost 1lb of bulgogi per order. Not a bad deal for the price of 21.99 for dinner, but you still have to pay extra to get kalbi and brisket. Service could be better. Definitely room for improvement. Came here on a Tuesday night and made reservations for 7 people. They were super proactive and had already set up the table for us. Kudos for that. The place wasn't very popping for a Tuesday night but still thought the environment could've used some upbeat music to liven up the atmosphere. The servers were attentive and would check up on us often. Each round you're able to order up to 4 meats, but for ayce ($21.99) obviously you get unlimited rounds. So thats some info for ya. However my experience that night wasn't five stars because: 1. one of the servers accidentally spilled some of the raw meat liquids on me, aka blood. Good thing I was wearing my red leggings so the stain wasn't super visible. He did apologize but man you gotta be more careful! If I had been wearing some expensive ass pants, damn, would've lost my head homie. 2. one of our grills kept malfunctioning and going up in flames and charcoaled the crap out of our meat, and "hahaha" yes yes yes we checked and it wasn't due to our cooking. The server told us someone forgot to refill the water under the grill to prevent it from going up in smokes, which is rather careless and a little dangerous. What doesn't make sense to me is that they make you pay an additional $5 to your AYCE price of $21.99 if you want brisket - the staple of Korean AYCE. Everything we ordered was super salty except for their marinated pork belly which was probably steeped in nothing but sugar and honey. To make things worse, their banchans were horrible and they ran out of rice paper . Kimchi - seems like it was freshly pickled Fish cake - super pale in color and lacking flavor Salad - salty Ribeye bulgogi - tough and horrendous House marinated pork - sugary like candyland Unseasoned bulgogi - tough and chewy By far the worst Korean restaurant and BBQ place in the Bay. During our visit in SF, we went to Beque BBQ grill located in Japan town. We arrived around noon on a Thursday and it was pretty empty. It was about $16 per person for lunch (all you can eat), which has limited meat options - bulgogi (marinated beef), pork belly, couple different pork (spicy, house marinated), and chicken (bbq, spicy). However, you can choose Dinner AYCE even during lunch time for more meat options including brisket, squid, and shrimp at $22 per person. The quality of meat was good overall. I thought that the pork belly had too much fat (vs meat) but because each strip was thinly sliced it was still good and not too fatty. The portions were pretty generous. We were too full after 3 meats (bulgogi, spicy pork, pork belly) that we didn't get to try house marinated pork. The server did not help with cooking the meat at all. The grill got burnt pretty quickly and each time we grilled one kind of meat, the grill needed to be changed. The server did a good job checking on us with things needed. You need to ask for Ssamjang (korean soybean sauce for pork belly) because it is not served as part of your basic banchan. The banchan was pretty weak in my opinion- they tasted ok but there was not much variety. I was also surprised that there was no lettuce/sesame leaves for Ssam. Went for dinner on Saturday around 8, waited about half an hour to get a table for 2. The whole area was pretty crowded because of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Overall very hard to beat the value here -- 21.99 for all you can eat Korean BBQ! Sauces weren't my favorite (sesame oil and bean paste) but we ordered meats that were already nicely seasoned and flavorful so didn't end up using the sauces! We got the bulgogi ribeye, spicy bulgolgi and spicy pork. Bulgolgi ribeye was my favorite -- a nice subtly sweet flavor too! Bf loved the spicy pork bulgogi. Bonchon was standard - pretty good kimchi and noodles. Service was great-- refilled our waters very often, changed our grill twice and also waiters were very nice and smiling (unlike a lot of other AYCE places I've been). Bathroom was clean. Wasn't t expecting great meat but the beef was pretty terrible. Some of it reminded me the smell of dead wildlife when I bit into it. My gag reflex almost had me spit the food out but i pushed it down with sips of water. Pork belly was okay. Did not try the Chicken. Banchan was not impressive, even the kimchi was really weak and cut up to small size. The hot plate burnt everything quickly so that is normally bad but good in this case since burnt meat hid the taste of the terrible meat. $pend another 5-10$ pp for something edible at another kbbq joint or just cook some ny steaks at home. I was pleased to find out that the same owner of beque in newark is also operating this location - since it had been a while since I last visited, my boyfriend and I stopped by to eat. The servers are super friendly and react quickly to whatever you need! There is a lot of freedom in the way that the grills and everything is set up. Traditionally, you take the salt+pepper into the little dipping dish and add sesame seed oil to it. Then you take the grilled meats that aren't marinated with sauce (ei: pork belly, beef brisket) and then dip+season! The quality of meat, I found was very worth the price. The other red squirt bottle is filled with a vinegar-y dipping sauce that has a very mild kick. Considering that it's AYCE, you get all the side dishes, rice, rice paper, it's pretty value for a family or group gathering - make sure you come hungry! If you're not so hungry, the single grill plates are still really good value! Which is what I did since I (no shame) had a parfait from cafe maiko next door. For one plate of grillable meat, it's $22 and definitely shareable between two people (the slabs of porkbelly is seriously THE BEST UGHHHHH reminds me so much of my family dinners) TLDR: good value, good company, good servers, good food. read more

However, their red eye bulgogi and house marinated pork were my favorite meats! I liked how they were constantly checking up on us, making sure or waters were full, and changing our grill. Came here for AYCE KBBQ on a Tuesday night, it was about 23 dollars per person. Not bad for the quality of the food at that place. The reason why I give this place 3 stars is because their KBBQ is honestly mediocre, but then again you shouldn't expect anything more than mediocre for AYCE KBBQ for 23 dollars. Let's just say they had the basic spread for a KBBQ place, but what truly won me over was the customer service at this place, unlike a lot of other AYCE KBBQ places, you didn't need to aggressively flag down someone to put in an order. Many times during our dinner, a server will come over to you first and ask you if you needed to put in anymore orders or if you needed refills on anything. I have to be honest, their actual grill wasn't too great, it needed to be changed quite often but the good thing was that the servers were attentive and came ofer to change our grill in a timely manner, which I appreciated. I definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a basic affordable AYCE KBBQ place with quick service, but for the price, you shouldn't expect anything more than that. read more

came here on a saturday afternoon since all the other places in japantown required an 1+ wait. the first thing i noticed was probably how empty it was.. since i noticed all the other places had long waits. we still decided to eat here though since the price was fairly worth it for ayce. the only good thing i think was the fact that they didn't require everyone to do ayce. my friend got her wisdom teeth pulled out so it worked perfectly! she ordered the tofu soup and i was so surprised when the tofu wasn't soft tofu like normal places!! the most basic thing to order for kbbq is probably brisket and i was surprised that it was not included in the lunch menu so we opted for the dinner one. service was pretty slow considering how little people were in the restaurant. we asked multiple times for more brisket but they only came out with one little tray each time for 7 people!! how annoying! one super downside was probably when they gave us a grill change and the grill wasn't washed all the way through!! halfway through when our grill was heating up, the old oil started to boil up from under the grill. overall, i would probably only come here again if i want a cheap and regular kbbq meal or if i was in the area read more

Please avoid!!! Came here for lunch one time on weekend and never going back again! I've tried KBBQ place in Asia, LA, and many places in the Bay Area, and this place is the worst! The lunch menu is very small (about 6 items). For an AYCE kbbq, $15.99 is very cheap, but I'd rather order an entree somewhere else. The meat quality here is terrible, no marbles whatsoever, and they are mostly marinated, which were super salty and very dry. I had to drink a sip of water every time I eat the meat. This is the only time I went in to a kbbq and came out without being full because I didn't want to eat these dried meats anymore. The service was okay. They really try to do the minimal to get the business going. You would have to flag them down to have them come over and rarely respond to you, but they do come change the grill frequently which was pretty nice. Maybe with more menu options for dinner would be better but I personally would not go back again. While the rice was sweet and had a good texture/taste. The customer service was very good, I left after buying to eat outside and came back a short while later. I asked if I could use the bathroom and they still let me in even though been gone for a short while. The bathroom was clean and the toilet paper was of good quality. They only accept cash so if you have a card I recommend you walk to the nearest ATM and acquire some funds before purchasing. I will definitely purchase the beef bowl again when I get the chance too. Within the first half hour of the restaurant opening, a mouse ran across the floor, literally crossed paths with a server, and ran under the table next to ours. The server continued to serve that very table their drinks and food without so much as a warning that there was a mouse weaving between their feet. We didn't know what to do because telling the couple seemed to be within the jurisdiction of the server, but she just continued serving other tables. Well of course we told them about the mouse, and of course there was screaming and some degree of havoc. My friend's boyfriend then asked the selfsame server if we could be moved to a different side of the restaurant. She declined because "there are only two other servers working today." We were also told, "It's an old building; there are mice everywhere." Wholly understand that servers at AYCE KBBQ places get a raw deal and SF buildings are old, but this was surreal. On a bright note, another server 1) apologized (which was unnecessary, but appreciated), 2) didn't throw attitude, and 3) actually made some sort of effort to look for the critter. Food was fine, not great. $17 for lunch menu, $21 for dinner that gives you significantly more meats. Seems like a good deal, especially for Bay Area AYCE, but what can I say?
