If you need sporting goods and you prefer excellent customer service I would definitely recommend this Big 5 Sporting Goods store on Clayton Rd. My young child and I walked in today and not only were we immediately greeted but the person behind the counter, Maile also asked if we needed any help finding anything, and then I saw a really cute hat as she was ringing me up for a swimming cap and she told her coworker that I was looking for one that I could adjust to fit better around my head. In the meantime, another customer had approached the counter and at the last minute I grabbed one more thing. Maile rung my items up and asked me if I wanted a bag. Then, she helped the other customer on the other side as her coworker tried appeasing me with other hat sizes. Every person working there seemed to have a smile and a FANTASTIC attitude! read more

Bought some snowboarding gear mid season and so you're not gong to find any deals on snow days. Knowing that, we purchased awesome $169 mens jacket, $120 women's jacket, and $100 men's pants. Loved our purchases and they've been great in very cooks weather this season. We're staying dry and warm! Zakk at the register was friendly and made good conversation as he rang us up. Big 5 has great deals all the time and I love their emails of one-day sale items, though I usually see them after it's too late. This location is well-organized and well-staffed. I love how Big 5 has a shoe sale every day of the year, yet they advertise like it's something special. I can't say that I've ever bought shoes here but they do have a pretty extensive selection. They also have a ton of camping gear, which is what I'm interested in. Years ago I bought a Coleman sleeping bag at Big 5 for $19 & I use it on almost every camping trip. I love it. Last year I bought an awning here which was on sale for like $100. It's one of the big ones, too. But if you happen to buy something that isn't on sale, it might be overpriced. Last night I bought 3 bottles of propane for $15. I guess it's not a bad price but I know I've seen them for less at other sporting good stores. Oh well, I'll just stick with buying the camping gear that's on sale from now on. read more

I went here the other day to maybe get a new fishing rod... the manager of this store was perfect! He came over and asked if I needed help, I didn't really know if I wanted the help because in the past people give me bs info or simply don't even know what I am asking or talking about. But this guy knew his stuff soooo well. He knew everything in that store it seemed but certainly about fishing and tackle. Damn, he helped me so much that I finally made the jump and bought a bait caster reel instead of a spinning real, because of him showing me what was up with it and demonstrating how to handle it and cast properly. Dude was awesome. 5 stars straight up. Excellent customer experience! 3 days later --- ‍. Lmao. Hit and miss and I'm being nice. Not everyone here is great. We were treated as criminals... My boyfriend ordered a scope. He was a big fun of Big 5 and bought several air guns in the past. He went to the store and picked up the scope he ordered. The employee at the store looked at the box and gave it to him. Both employee and he did not open the box. He came home and opened the box. It was a cheaper kind of scope in the box without any plastic bag. He came back to the store and told them he got a wrong scope. Guess what? They said they don't know if he put a cheaper scope in the box and try to get a expensive one. The employee told that they don't sell Gammo scope separately at their store. But, one of Gammo swarm rifles they sell comes with that scope exactly. Someone may have returned it and someone may have put in a wrong box. Instead of checking all different possibilities, the manager already decided that he committed fraud. He asked the manager to talk to the employee who gave him a box. The manager said the employee said she opened the box. That is not true. He asked the manager to check the camera, serial number , inventory, return record, anything he can prove that he did not switch the scope. They did not try to help him to prove that he does not try to steal the scope. He came home and told me the story. We decided to go back to the store to convince them that he did not switch the scope. We asked to see if they checked the camera that they can confirm if the employee checked the box. Neil, one of the employees said they checked it, but they cannot see it clearly. They are selling guns so they should have surveillance camera that they can see clearly. Neil told us that the manager has already made a decision that they are not going to do anything and we have to call the corporate to get resolved. Neil also told in front of me that my boyfriend may have switched the scope. I could not believe what I heard. They already decided he did it. At that point, nobody knows what really happened. They should not treat the customers as a criminal. I was very angry and tried to prove that my boyfriend is innocent. All he did was he ordered a scope and he got a wrong one so he is claiming to get one he ordered. I kept saying that this is not right and they cannot treat us like we are criminals. Neil asked me to leave as my voice was getting lauder as I was very angry and getting excited as I could not believe what was happening there. I stopped right there as there is no point to argue with the people who do not understand what the customer services are. Neil clearly told me that he has to go with the manager's decision and back their employee up (means they believe that the employee said she checked the box, which is not true). I said I will write about this incident in yelp. He said "go ahead". If this is the culture of Big 5, we will never go back to Big 5. How come innocent person has to be punished like this? read more

Customer service is one of my major pet peeves, this location does not know or care about customer service at all. I cam in to get some basic .22LR ammo and waited for 4-5 minutes at the gun area, saw a clark three times and she would not make eye contact with me. I had to leave the department to find somebody to help me, just to have the first clerk say "I could have answered that for you sir"..... Really?? Bottom line, if your not in a dire need for something, skip this location and take your hard earned money elsewhere. read more

I was looking for some new shades and they happen to be very close to my boyfriend's house so I decided to take a walk and check out their selection. They keep their sunglasses in a locked case so I had to wait a very short time for the clerk to come over and help me nab a few out of the case. They have great deals on polarized sunglasses that I bought up their stock in a certain style because I knew they wouldn't get anymore of it if I didn't. What a difference a drive makes. I live right down the street from the Walnut Creek store and have never really liked it. Cramped and in disarray . Decided since I had a return to make from a gift I received to try the Concord store. Glad I did. I had a receipt for my item but no box for the shoes I was returning. Spoke with a nice young man in the shoe department and he approached his manager for assistance. Even while the manager was busy, the sales man continued to assist me. The manager was very a accommodating and approved my return. The cashier was a nice and polite young woman and handled everything very well. The store was very well organized and very neat and tidy. Went to buy some ammo for my first ever shooting session, and everyone I talked to at the store was super nice. The guy at the ammo counter was very helpful, offering suggestions without putting the most expensive option first. Probably the worst customer service I have ever encountered, or at least one of the worst. The people that work here not only seem rude, but RACIST, and that is not a term I use lightly or just like to throw around. My husband came in a couple of weeks ago to check out soccer gear, and went to checkout after a bit. At the checkout, the middle aged lady who was processing his payment said to him in the most condescending tone "How are you...do you know what that means?" My husband is Mexican, but speaks very good English, and had not said one word to her before that extremely rude question. So that came just based on the fact that he looked Mexican...?? WTF?! My husband was just so shocked and annoyed, he said No to her, which prompted laughs from her and the other associates. Clearly he did understand, which is why he answered no sarcastically, and they still had the audacity to laugh at him as if he was a circus act. This is California, and if this is how they treat their non-Caucasian customers, I will never go back. I told my husband we should return what he bought and talk to the manager, but he didn't want to make a scene. However we certainly will never be back thanks to the rude lady who thinks it is OK to disrespect and laugh at paying customers because of their ethnicity, and then make unfair stereotypes while at it. read more

I was in need of sleeping bags to give out at an event in concord "Giving thanks at Thanksgiving " we have cooked a homemade meal and served over 300 people. Additionally there is a store to collect clothes and blankets. We attempted to buy some blankets at Kmart in concord since they were going out of business but we had HORRIBLE service from the store manager. We left upset by the manor in which we were treated. Then the absolute opposite thing happened. We went to Big 5 and was helped by a great representative Olivia. She not only pulled down almost 30 sleeping bags from the rafters but talked to her manager I think his name was Ryan who gave us an additional discount as it was clear we were buying for the community. Now that is a store I will not only give praise to my circle of influence but I am a loyal customer. Thank you Big 5 for bring love and warmth to others in your community. We thanked them profusely and they responded by saying "No thank you for what you are doing". Kmart would not honor a 1.24 discount when Big 5 took 5.00 off each sleeping bag. I walk in, the guy behind the register stares at me & finally greets me, how are you sir? Me-Doing good, how are you.................no response. So, I make way back to the shoe department, an employee walks past me, how are today, me- good, how are you............he walks away with no response. I'm in the shoe department, obviously looking for shoes. The little guy working that department COMPLETELY ignores me & waits on some lady who came in after me. Let's see, shoe department, a person in said department looking at shoes.........................what could he possibly be there for or want????????????????? So, I keep looking on my own because the little guy in the tie is still pretending not to see me. I'm in an aisle looking at shoes & here comes a female employee walking right towards me, no intention of moving out of the way or saying excuse me. I get out of her way & she walks past like I'm not even there as I pressed myself against one of the shelves of shoes. I say excuse me, she says yes? I tell her I was saying excuse me because obviously, I was in her way. Her-oh,babble,babble,babble......................................................... The last time I bought shoes from here(years ago) the "leather" on my way overpriced shoes started coming apart just a week after buying them. I took them back & the manager said"that's perfectly normal, that's what they do." He refused to give me a refund. Horrible customer service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very disappointing. I was enticed to visit this store by two coupons. One was for regularly priced items and the other was for sale priced items. Apparently they have a pricing scheme where certain items have a price that isn't "regular" nor "on sale" by their definition. Excuse me, but f it's always a certain price, that's it's regular price by definition, no matter what you call it. If it is reduced from that, then it's sale priced, right??? Very strange business practice if you ask me. Lucky for me, I searched the item and found it on line for less, including shipping. When I was inside the store I heard this high pitched noise, I couldn't figure out what the noise was...I was thinking...should I leave...I was tempted to...So...a gal that works there asked if I needed some help, I had mentioned to her the noise, and she explained to me that that noise goes off when an employee, or customer is over in the gun area of the store, which makes perfect sense....SAFETY... I bought what was suppose to be a brand new $479+tax shotgun. 10 days later I pick up my gun and it's a very handle display model..... I tried to return the gun the next morning and I find out that they do not do returns on firearms. I really wish and they should very clearly let the gun purchaser know that they are buying a floor model firearm, to me it's like a bought a "used" gun, who knows how many hands have been on it. I started comparing shoes and took a long time as I always do making decisions because I don't want to return it and I should be happy with it. I even had my money out, counting it, to buy several. I was rudely kicked out of the store by a condescending 'authority' and then when I contacted the higher up they just acted like it was okay because I was taking shoes off the shelves. Ridiculous. It doesn't matter how long I was there, nobody was much coming into that store before I walked in and then a bunch of people started being interested. What a coincidence. Lines. That's how they work. You're welcome for making effortless sales. As I mentioned to the managing lady, I was going to buy at least 3 pairs of shoes. Store smells fantastic (sarcasm) as all poorly ventilated shoe/stores and they even have (fabulous!) a cancer warning sign because of the chemicals contained in their cheap shoes. The main thing I love about Big 5 is their cheap prices, especially on shoes. I LOVE Big 5 but the reason I'm giving this location 1 star is because their customer service STINKS! I went in to buy a head warmer and two employees were standing at the register when I walked in. Neither of them greeted me or asked if they could help me find anything. I've worked retail for 10 years and the easiest thing to do when a customer walks in is to say "HELLO!" But no, all they did was stand at the register and gossip about the worker's friend. As a customer, I don't want to go into a store and hear workers talking about their personal lives. That's something you do in the break area, away from the sales floor. That's very unprofessional. I grabbed my head warmer and walked to the back of the store to see what shoes were on sale. Two male employees were working back there and neither of them said hello or asked if I needed help. There was a couple trying on shoes and a couple more people looking around, but no one else was in the store. One employee asked the other two people if they needed help but I got nothing! They both looked at me, but no greeting or assistance. The employee's were very rude tonight and I should have put my head warmer back on the rack and walked out, but the price was good and I REALLY needed a new one. Out of the 5 employee's there, only one of the workers talked to me but it wasn't until I went to the cash register to pay for my item. By the way, I worked at Big 5 for 8 years and the customer service at my stores were NEVER as bad as the service I received from this one. Now I know why the cashier said, "You don't want to work at this store." Will never be going back to this location, unless I'm desperate to get something that I can't find elsewhere. Advice for the managers here: Do better background checks/interviews before you hire employees! They all look very professional in their slacks and dress shirts, but their manners and service are HORRIBLE and unprofessional!! It only takes a second to say hello to a customer. read more
