Good wraps and subs, customer service isn't great!

This place is great. I've never had a bad experience here. The food is fantastic, the quality is much more than you would expect from a traditional pizza shop. The staff is very nice and accommodating. I asked the owner today to surprise me with a sub and he made me a prosciutto, basil, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, basil and vinaigrette dressing sub. Does anybody else call this place Big A** Sub Shop or is that just me? It's not big, its a small place on the corner. DiPietro's is across the street and supposed to be the best pizza in Malden, but I definitely disagree. Big A's pizza is always perfect - not undercooked, not overdone, perfect amount of sauce and cheese. My hubby loves the Italian sub. Don't get the mozzarella sticks unless you dine in. By the time you get home, the cheese will have "deflated" and not be that yummy, melty-ness that everyone loves so much. (I think this is actually a rule for all mozzarella sticks. Boo.) read more

I like it a lot. Nice crunchy shredded lettuce, chopped pickles, onions, peppers, olive oil and vinegar and plentiful salt and pepper on the Italian. Fresh sub rolls, good quality meat, cheap prices and good portions. Delivery. House made meat balls and marinara sauce. read more

This is an ode to their chicken parm subs. The bread is soft and dense with a generous helping of sesame seeds dotting the crust, which only serves to sop up all the wonderfully zesty marinara sauce smothering the chicken cutlets. There are at least four cutlets, juicy and tender piled high in between the slices. The cheese? Authentically Provolone, which oozes onto your fingers with each delicious bite. This sandwich easily keeps you happy through two whole meals. Best chicken parm sub in the Boston area. I dare you to prove me wrong. They deliver all around the Medford and Malden area, with no special charges or fees. Oh and the Greek and chicken Caesar wraps are great too. read more

Pros: Nice clean sub shop, Great sandwiches across the board, particularly the steak, chicken parmesan, tuna and turkey. The chicken parm is made to order, that is they bread the raw chicken and fry it at the time of order insuring a moist delicious cut. the pizza is greek style and pretty good. Cons: No off-street parking be prepared to park blocks away. At lunch time gets crazy busy and service suffers, be sure to check your order. read more

I ordered a Chicken Parm, a Steak and Cheese, and an order of wings. The Chicken Parm was fantastic...easily the best I've ever had. The chicken was cooked to order and the finished product was delicious. I would give this sandwich 5 stars if if was the only thing I ordered. The Steak and Cheese was mediocre. For one, the size of the large sub was smaller than say Bob's at around a similar price. The meat was chopped really really finely which gave the sandwich an almost mushy feel. I'd give this one a 2. For $9 (large) I got 10 buffalo wings which is a definitely pricier that similar wings at other places. They were nice and meaty though but wicked salty. The blue cheese that came with was amazingly good and definitely cut the salt of the wings. I'd give these a 3.5. The restaurant itself is nice and clean and parking is easy at 7PM. The staff is really friendly and everything was packaged correctly. Overall, if it wasn't for the Steak, I'd give them a 4 but that sandwich brought it down to a 3. read more

The food is pretty good: totally standard pizza joint stuff, but the Red sauce is good so what more do you want? Points off just because every single time I have been there, the woman behind the counter makes her total disdain for humanity the most memorable part of the meal. She could not possibly have more of a sour puss, you'll never, ever get a smile out of her in a million years. She very clearly hates her job and every single customer that walks through the door. I placed an online order with in 20 mins i recieved a text alert that my food would be here with in 15 mins. I ended up waiting 45 mins. I called them and they said it was on the way. I said how can it be on the way 45 mins ago when i live less than 10 mins away. Finally it shows up 55 mins lata and the food is ice cold. I call back and they say they will make them again and get them back out to me. After waiting a half hour i gave up and heated up the ones that i had gotten, and what do you know an hour later they came back with the others. never again will i order from here read more

Big A is life! I grew up down the street from the shop and hands down the best subs! My go to is the Italian and anything in a wrap. The menu changed a little bit and the prices went up, but who cares! The food is good and the people behind the counter and on the streets delivering our food are chill. Love the vibe! read more

Ordered lunch from here for the first time last week. The woman that took my order was very friendly. Based on previous reviews, I decided to satisfy my buffalo chicken craving with the buffalo chicken wrap. I also ordered a side of fries. The portions were huge. Unfortunately, the wrap was pretty disappointing and the fries were gross. The tortilla wrap tasted like it had been steamed (like a burrito), and overall the ingredients tasted watery. The fries are the strange batter style, which I wish I realized before I had ordered. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day, or maybe the buffalo chicken wrap isn't their best item on the menu. The friendly service and quick readiness time (~10 mins) are reason enough for me to try Big A again in the near future. read more

I've never had a better steak and cheese sub than the one from Big A. Their subs are incredible. I know people who grew up eating at Big A, have moved away, and come to Malden to visit just to eat there again. I know others who still talk about The Big A and when they used to eat it as kids. I don't understand all the fuss about their supposed attitude on the phone. That's how New Englanders are and honestly they're busy making sure your food is delicious so give them a break if they're straight shooters on the phone. I've called countless times and it depends on the time of day that you're calling. I've always just thought of it as efficient. Quick call, quick order, quick food. Easy. It's a shame that they don't deliver anymore, but their food is so good it won't stop me from coming to pick up. read more

I always get their pepper and egg sub, and it is one of the best that I have had. Some places will cook their eggs on a dirty griddle, which imparts a kind of burnt/old taste to the eggs, but Big A's eggs are super fresh and clean tasting. The bread is also delicious, and never soggy. I also love their jalapeno poppers, though if you are expecting something spicy, you will be disappointed; they are surprisingly mild. The service can be slow, and the people there can be confused/angry, but at the end of the day, if the food is good, I'll keep going back. read more

Most other sub shops are far better then this one, Ordered a large pastrami sub. It was not like the large at most other sub shops let alone it was $8.75 and the taste was not there. Maybe they should not precook. And to top it off the cook spilled a portion on the way to wrapping it. When I told him he spilled some he said that was ok. I wont ever be back for sure. This is a good spot - their wings are on point! My wife and I have ordered delivery from here 2x...both times it's taken almost exactly 40 minutes to arrive (which is totally fine, and the driver is really friendly, too). We love their wings - they're not tossed in a sauce, the heat is in the batter and it's really good. Crispy, delicious, and a good amount of heat to them. We've gotten the wings both times. Their subs are really good too- we've only gotten a sub once and it was delicious. Got the Italian - bread is really fresh, meat tastes high quality and toppings were fresh too...can't wait to try more of their subs! The only reason they didn't get 5* is because the salads are slightly less than mediocre. We've gotten the Greek and Caesar...nothing special about them. Dressings taste like they're from a (cheap) bottle. I got the steak tips on my Caesar salad...they were tasty, but nothing special (I'd eat them again). The flavor was decent, but the quantity was a very pleasant surprise so it pretty much made up for any lacking flavor :-) We will continue to order from here, we just won't get salads. This place is top notch!!! The owner Nick takes great pride in his shop. So clean and organized. I order every weekend....most times I have it delivered and it is hands down the fastest delivery every time! Under 30 minutes during the busiest time of day. The rolls!!! The Big A in Malden USE to be one of my favorite places to eat while I was on break . Their food was good their service was good , I'm not to sure what has happened because everything switched up . Their service is terrible . Everyone behind the counter is rude , I ordered a sub to come down the street and it took an hour and a half and upon arrival there has been hair in my food . I used to love this place but the service has gone down the tubes on deliveries. The last couple of times I got deliveries they ran over an hour and delivered cold food. I have been a customer of Big A for aLOOONNNGGG time. They have always had awesome service..if i had a problem with an order they fixed it ...or gave me some slack on my next order...these people understand customer service. I recently moved somewhat out of their normal delivery area...but still close to the line of where they deliver. And they will still come deliver to me. Ok, it's been roughly 4 years since I first reviewed this place, however one night a few months ago my friend told me she would pick up subs and asked me what I wanted. I told her to get me a seafood sub from where ever she went. Once she got to my house we ate and it wasn't until I finished that I asked where she went, When she told me the Big A, I felt my stomach do a quick flip. I was so adamantly against this place that I could not believe that I just ate from there.... what I couldn't believe more was that I enjoyed it. I hated myself for liking something I have despised for so long. A week or so went by and I could not get the thought of that sub out of my head, so I went back, and then I went back again and again. It's been roughly five months since that first night, and I've made roughly 10 trips back there and every time I still expect to see something that will turn my stomach as it once did, but I have yet to be disappointed again. One quick thing though, they have possibly the worst meatballs I have ever tasted in my life, they are clearly from a freezer. And they have no right being slathered in a pretty decent tomato sauce. I understand it was a large order but to screw up every meal and not even bring the correct food.... I've been coming here since 2004 and was instantly hooked on the chicken kabob wrap and buffalo chicken wrap, (as well as the fries, but only sometimes..gotta stay fit :-) Fairly simple and straight forward, this the best "mom and pop" place in the area as far as I'm concerned. On a regular basis, I only order takeout from the same 3 places, and will drive from Everett to here for a pickup (even though Everett has sub shop options everywhere) It can get quite busy during peek lunch and dinner hours, but usually not out of hand. There are tables here and a TV if you plan on eating at the restaurant. read more

There subs were great untill the last 2 times i order. I ask for them toast n they were not the 1st time the gave me another sub it was really wet which is nasty and i just left it alone. The second time i got a sub i ask 4 times for it toast again it was not the gave me another one which look like it was in the oven for 5 second and again it was wet. The refused to give my $ back or another sub she told me in the computer it say i like to complain i was get subs there for 5 months 4 to 5 times a month and i always tip good and they treated me like shit and even type in the computer i like to complain so everytime i call ot says that i think they did something to my sub Thats why it was wet. I have to give them 1 star because Yelp will not allow me to give them Zero! I have tried ordering pizza delivery from them on three separate occasions now, and each time I've had to call and have a new pizza delivered because the cheese had slid off the pizza. Cardinal rule in Pizza Service: ALWAYS let the pizza rest for 5 minutes before delivery! Once again, today's delivery ended in epic failure. All the cheese was on one half of the pizza per usual, and once again I had to call and have them deliver a new replacement pizza. This time however, it took them over 1 hour to traverse the 1/2 mile down the street from their shop to the store I work in! I had a friend who lived right near the Big A and we used to get grilled chicken salads there all the time. Simple, right? A grilled chicken salad? One would think, but they have somehow upped the standards for sub shops and make an amazing salad in less than 5 minutes. It's 2-3 meals in one, comes with tasty fat free house dressing that's so good I wish I could buy it in bulk, and yummy pita bread. They also have a great selection of other food as well. The pizza is all right, but the subs and salads are what I go there for. This is the gem of Malden. read more
