A reliably tasty Hawaiian bbq spot, this location has quickly become one of my favorite dinner…read morespots in downtown Berkeley. I would definitely recommend the chicken combo- it comes with two types: deliciously crunchy panko-crusted chicken (meat tastes fresher than L&L Hawaiian) and teriyaki chicken. Meat portions are generous, and can easily be enough for two whole meals. Food also comes really quickly (~10 min) and the staff have always been nice when I've visited. All in all, a great spot for yummy protein at a reasonable price.

Actually mustard might be a helpful condiment to offer to address the blandness of the food here. I'm not saying it's bad here because it clearly satisfies the student populace who obviously need sustenance to make it through their midterms and finals. For me as someone many years from my undergrad days, however, my point of reference relates to the plate lunches I could find on Oahu. Using that point of comparison, I suggested to Jamie W that we give it a try during one of our weekend Berkeley walks. Jamie ordered the $14.99 BBQ Chicken & Beef Combo Meal. It was a hefty portion suitable for a growing post-adolescent. The meal came with the requisite two scoops of rice, one scoop of macaroni salad, and steamed cabbage underneath the meat (Photo 5). He pronounced it middling when it came to flavor satisfaction. I went for the $13.99 Hawaiian BBQ Beef Bowl. It came with the same sides, and the satisfaction level was comparable (Photo 6). Listen, if I was young and running late to my study group, I'd be so in. FOOD - 3 stars...exceptional portion-wise but middling when it comes to satisfaction AMBIANCE - 3 stars...not much character SERVICE - 3 stars...automatic TOTAL - 3 stars...give me a real plate lunch RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? We entered a few minutes before peak dinner times, so there were seats to choose and sit from. By the time we left, mostly all the seats were filled up, so I would suggest coming in early. I liked the naming for each of the ramen dishes, some I recognized the names from Hawai'i. For this round, we ordered 3 different types of ramen: the Kuni, Broke da Mouth, and the Miso Hungry. These orders also came around the same time. A notable elements I liked about the ramen was that the noodles were chewy and springy, and the broth was smooth and easy to drink. I also didn't have the urge to drink lots of water either, so the seasoning was perfect. The other element was that I got to enjoy the ramen's broth and noodles as the stars of the dish, and the proteins, like the pork were supporting roles. For me, what I enjoy ramen are the broth and noodles, so I'm happy that these are prominent in the dish, rather than me having other chow down a thick slab of pork. This restaurant hit the right marks for what a delicious ramen is for me, so I'll come back, and maybe try their other broths.

I have been super excited to try hawking bird, and it did not disappoint. We got the satay chicken salad, curry fried chicken rice bowl, pickles, and the calamansi soda. Satay chicken salad -- very fresh and flavorful. the grilled chicken was very well marinated, and had lots of flavor. It came with a vinaigrette and a yummy peanut dipping sauce on the side. We thought it could use a little more greens, as the portion felt somewhat small. Curry fried chicken bowl -- this was our favorite thing that we got! The curry was flavorful and there was the perfect amount of it over the chicken and rice. There was a healthy portion of fried chicken and rice, which we appreciated. The chicken itself was super crispy and yummy. All of the components went very well together, and we really loved this one! Pickles -- this was just okay to me. the pickled vegetables consisted of assorted veggies including green beans, peppers, and cabbage. The veggies had a slight sweetness to them, but also were spicy! Not my favorite, but still pretty good. Calamansi soda -- honorable mention because I love calamansi and was so excited to see that they had this as an option! If you are a calamansi lover, you definitely enjoy this. it was crisp, refreshing, and had an authentic calamansi flavor. I'd definitely get it again! Overall, we really enjoyed our meal! We thought that the portions were the perfect size for sharing, which we loved. Next time, I'd definitely get the curry rice bowl again because it was so good! The decor was super cute, and the staff were friendly and attentive. If you are craving a chicken dish, we recommend you check this place out!

Order at the counter and they bring food to you. - kmg: The sauce did the khao mun gai did not taste as flavorful (less funky, more watered down). - green beans: similar to above, more watered down flavors. Was expecting more funk and spice and sweetness like what they used to serve. - tater tots: crunchy with a hint of tom yum (I think) seasoning - Lao sausage: a tad dry, again would want more flavorful seasoning Slow service (took 20 mins for us to get our soup broth that came with our rice dish, and prob 30 mins for us to get a side of pickles). Ambiance as loud and echoey and it sounded like a large fan or blender was going for a long time (which was still decently loud despite us sitting furthest end from the kitchen).

On the Blue Hawaii Bowl (without granola) the fresh fruit on top was good, but the base itself was a letdown. It had a bitter taste rather than being sweet, and overall it wasn't anything special or memorable. Also, keep in mind that the bowls don't come automatically with toppings; you have to pay extra for them, and they didn't have many options to choose from anyway. The texture of the base was fine, but the flavor missed the mark. Their smoothies actually looked a bit better, so if I ever went back, I'd probably try a smoothie instead, though I wouldn't go out of my way to return. My friend ordered the Rainbow Poke Bowl. He claimed it tasted fresh, wasn't dry, and had a lot of good flavors. It had a bit of a Hawaii vibe to the flavoring that reminded him of the islands, and while it was better than other mainland poke options, it still didn't quite compare to the real thing in Hawaii. The staff were very nice, and the interior of the shop is very decorative and cute. However, the location is in a rougher area with bad parking. Because the shop leaves its doors open, the strong smell from the street and the presence of homeless individuals hanging right outside drift directly into the shop. Not a destination spot for me, but the smoothies and staff might be worth a look if you're already in the area.
