    Dan dan noodles
    Sarah H.

What a hidden gem inside a supermarket. Food is amazing and so affordable! In this economy we had three items under $30. I can eat out more if there are more restaurants like this. I really liked the special noodle and my husband really enjoyed the dan dan noodles. There was a slight language barrier and that made the experience more authentic and made us feel like we were traveling in China. Must try! We will be back!

Big hype, decent food. Big Dan Shanxi Taste is a small restaurant inside of an Asian supermarket, and they've earned a James Beard semifinalist recognition and a segment on notable travel/food show Somebody Feed Phil. A trip by some friends earlier this year put it back on my radar, and I finally made it there to try some Chinese food that's a bit removed from the usual. #2 Cold Noodle w/ Sesame ($6.99): a small, sharable dish with very wide flat noodles, sesame sauce, some kind of spongy tofu, bean sprouts, and julienned cucumbers. The nuttiness of the sesame permeates everything, although I did get a slight sour note when I returned to the dish halfway through the meal. #21 Hot & Spicy Noodle Soup w/ Braised Beef ($13.99): we got this not hot & spicy, but ended up adding a touch of chili crisp later to round out the flavor profile. It's a clean broth that at times felt slightly underseasoned. The braised beef which we got with it wasn't too chewy, but it could have been a bit more tender. The wide flat noodles might have been just 1 or 2, really exemplifying the correlation of long noodles to longevity, but it did make it a bit unwieldy to eat. #15 Stir-fry Noodle w/ Lamb ($14.99): extremely fragrant with cumin on the aroma, but the cumin flavor felt more subtle. The noodles in this one are closer to a typical rounded, thick shape, but are still hyper-elongated. The lamb was tender and not at all gamey. However, the lack of capsaicin really threw off the balance, so I wish that they would maybe offer/request spice levels rather offering a yes or no on a non-specific "spicy." The seating area is somewhat compact and tight but can be manageable if you don't show up at peak hours. The atmosphere is an Asian supermarket. The beverages are all packaged stuff, and I ended up sticking to the complimentary iced water. I ended up doing payment at the register and used cash once I saw that there's a 3% card fee. Big Dan offers a look into a slightly different tradition than other Chinese spots in town via a relatively affordable list of dishes. I'll consider returning to try other dishes when I'm feeling adventurous.

Second time at Big Dan's and it was even better than the first. I want to try other items but the #15 is so damn good....

My neice remembered this from Somebody feed Phil. We happened to be in plaza for coffee. Although we were full, we wanted to try this place. Plenty of parking in the plaza. Go inside the asian grocery store. This is a small place with about 10-12 tables for 2-6 people. No frills. We ordered to go and it took about 10 minutes. Staff was helpful. Their chili oil has some nice heat and taste. The hand pulled noodles had great chewiness with being dense. Because of Lent & Friday, we didn't order meat dishes. Can't wait to go back and try some lamb.

Food is good I am an returning customer. Number 1, number 4, and number 13 is my go to. Keeps coming back for more.

Lamb Soup with hand-torn pita (or in this case cubed)

Little hole in the wall, inside an SF Supermarket and popularized by vloggers such as Strictly Dumpling on YouTube. Food from Xian area / Shaanxi Province is served here. The food was tasty, especially the cumin lamb burger (ruo jia mo 肉夹馍), but the lamb soup with pita bread cubes would have been more enjoyable had the cubes been served on the side instead of in the soup. If you don't finish that bowl within 10-15 minutes, those cubes would have absorbed all of the broth and get soggy. By then, it wasn't pleasant to eat. Sad reality to Spring Mountain Road and Chinatown is that vehicles with belongings left out in view will most likely get broken into and stolen. Our friend's rental was broken into the day before in front of Palette Tea Lounge, and there was shattered glass all over the parking lot the morning we visited here (early October 2025).

I can't believe it's taking me this long to finally check the spot out but spoiler alert, I loved it! Stopped by here on a whim because I saw the somebody feed Phil episode highlighting this restaurant on Netflix. This is a small restaurant inside a grocery store. It's in the SF market the smaller one that's on Decatur and Spring Mountain. When you go in, it's immediately on the left. They're down for spicy food and hand pulled noodles and being affordable. I think you can get something for just a few bucks and the most expensive thing might be like 12 or $13. We love the food here the flavors were delicious. The textures of the noodles was delicious and generally when we go out to eat, we have some leftovers, but we literally ate all of it. We tried three dishes, the Chinese burger with lamb, we tried a house special oil noodle, and then a beef noodle soup. The most delicious thing was the lamb in the burger however, I did think the "bun" was a bit dry but I think it's intentional. The noodles were addicting with acidic notes and spice then the noodle soup was brothy and beefy. Service was great, very quick, had water bottles at the table to pour from, it's also clean and fast so even if it's busy I'd wait. Also, just remembering from the photo I posted that we tried another dish, which was like a pasta sauce almost kind of tasted like Chinese spaghetti, and that was delicious too This is truly a gem that I hope never goes away

11/5/25 This is inside an Shun Fat Supermarket. Enter the supermarket and turn left. Small space with about 9 tables. Sit order eat Chinese Pork Hamburger 腊汁肉夹馍 - good but nothing special. Hot & Sour Soup Pork & Chives Dumpling 酸汤水饺 - outstanding, the sour is perfect, this soup is so delicious I wish I can take it home and throw some ramen into the remaining soup but we're on vaca so no place to keep it. Hometown Style Pork w. Noodle 腊汁肉揪面片 - this was delicious! The pork was so tender the sauce is amazing and the noodles that are handmade were perfect bite. I wish I lived in Vegas just so I can eat here all the time! Highly recommend!!!

    #16: braised shell-shaped noodles = $11.99
    Trung N.

There aren't a ton of descriptors on the menu - no markers to indicate fan favorites. Just familiar ingredients strung together for a brief description and some pictures for reference. Order what sounds good and trust that it'll be a good as you'd hope it'd taste. Honestly, the #2 cold sesame noodles ($6.99) are one of the best things I've eaten this year. They're large, hand-cut noodles served with a sauce made of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and a touch of chili oil. The sauce is simple and doesn't upstage the thick, bouncy noodles. Delish. The #13 special hot oil noodles with vegetables + pork ($11.99) is quite good as well. The diced veggies and pork give the noodles added texture and the hot oil really enhances the flavor. Big Dan Shanxi Taste is worth your while if you like and appreciate food. The restaurant is hardly a restaurant, but more of a food stall in a supermarket. It's quaint and the food feels authentic to its craft. I cannot recommend this place enough. Ten out of ten.

5 Stars - Authentic Shanxi Flavor Worth Seeking Out Big Dan Shanxi Taste is the definition of a hidden gem. It's a humble hole‑in‑the‑wall restaurant where the simple dining area lets the food do all the talking--and trust me, the food speaks volumes. I started with their Chinese herbal tea, which reminded me of sweet tea but with a mild, balanced sweetness I absolutely loved. For my main, I planned to try the cold noodles, but they were sold out (which tells you how popular they are), so I went with the special hot oil noodles with vegetables and pork. These noodles are on another level--perfect texture, incredible flavor, and the hot oil wasn't greasy at all. Instead, the spice and oil worked together beautifully to create a rich, savory dish that's both comforting and unique. While there wasn't a ton of pork or veggies, it added just enough variety to round out the flavors. Authentic, affordable, and packed with character, this place is a must‑try. I'll definitely be coming back, and next time I'm grabbing those cold noodles early!

    Spicy intestines noodle soup
    Melissa N.

Easy to get seating when you arrive early in the day. I've seen this place completely packed by 1 pm. We arrived shortly after 10 am and a couple tables were filled. We ordered the spicy intestines noodle soup and the lamb haggis noodle soup. Loved the noodles. They feel handmade and have great texture. The intestines could be softer. The spicy broth is surprisingly spicy. It sounds obvious but I have been to many spicy Chinese places where the spicy tends to be medium spice for my tolerance. I really enjoyed the light lamb broth. Great place to enjoy an inexpensive meal! I would come back to try other menu items in the future.

    Cumin Lamb Burger
    Lisa P.

Somebody Feed Lisa! And watch her Happy Dance around the table! Eating here literally brought me such joy. The special hot oil noodles was perfect. Not too spicy with soft and chewy thick noodles. So good we ordered one to take home are end of our meal. Simple and delicious. The cumin lamb burger was such a surprise. It looks a little dry and when you touch the pita it's crispy on the outside which was not expected. But it was love at first bite. The inside of the pita is side and the lamb was seasoned perfectly. Stir fried noodles with beef had a luxurious sauce and tender beef with tomatoes. Staff were super friendly and the food came out very quickly. Try the homemade plum juice which was delicately sweet and a nice contrast with spicy noodles. The prices are great. Bonus the you can do a little grocery shopping on the way out! I can't wait to come back.

This is a cold appetizer which was fine, but did not have the depth of spice or aromatics that we were hoping for. Unfortunately the crispy beef wasn't great in our opinion and reminded me personally of the meat quality at Panda Express. Maybe this dish was meant to cater more to the Western palate. We had what I think was a decent amount for 5 people and paid over $200 without any of the more expensive menu items, only dumplings. For the price and what we got, I don't think it was worth the price tag. Alright, the foods. Pork soup dumplings, rainbow shrimp dumpling, pork shrimp shu mai, chicken shu mai, bbq pork bao buns, pork belly bao buns, the ducklings, crunch dragon wings, chicken satay, and the eel crispy rice. Everything was good, but the best of the bunch were the pork soup dumplings and the eel crispy rice. The pork soup dumplings came with a black vinegar "caviar" that complimented the flavors in the soup portion. The crispy eel rice had a great char on the eel and the rice was crispy without being overly crunchy. According to kid 3, the notable mention was the crunch dragon wings that had the "perfect spice and really crunchy skin." Oh, and kid 1 was not a fan of the ducklings, she realized that she's not a fan of 5-spice which these had an overpowering flavor of. Overall, great experience but for the price we paid vs what we got was not worth it. The lychee martini! That was sensational, if you're 21 and enjoy a sweeter cocktail, this one is for you! Service was top notch, the ladies and gentlemen know what they are doing there.
