My first review couldn't go to a more deserving place. The owner was displaced by Katrina & brought everything that is good & holy from the Big Easy with him. Gumbo, etouffee , beignets? Check, check, & check. The Blackened Cajun fish over dirty rice & topped with etouffee is the best plate of food I have ever had the distinct pleasure of putting in my mouth. If you can't hang with the decorum you really don't deserve what is, in my opinion, the best Cajun food in Texas. No frills, no bs, just honest & amazing food. Was next door drinking a beer and wanted to hear some music so I went on over. I was the only person there the entire time. I looked at the menu but couldn't get myself to order anything. The old, dirty, paper menu and lack of customers had me thinking the food might be old and get me sick. Then I noticed that although I was the only person there they did plenty of to go business. Then the bartender from the bar I had come from came over to pick up his food so I decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did. The fried shrimp were great. Boudain ball were so, so. DO NOT GET the shrimp basket. It comes with popcorn shrimp. Get the platter or the po' boy and you'll get the good stuff. Will be back! read more

A 9/10, IMHO. The owner, Darryl (?) is from NOLA and was a cool guy to chat with. I liked that they had a live band playing, which was cool to see. We ordered a couple big Lone Stars, which were fairly inexpensive; However, the small margaritas in a can which you buy at HEB for $1 seemed to be a bit overpriced at this bar. This was our first time chilling at bars in East Austin, so we're glad we stopped by! I wouldn't mind returning back in the future. Sadly, the bar a couple doors down seemed to be quite hipster-ized, so I'm hoping this place doesn't become like it. read more

Not sure how they got such good ratings before!!! For $14.95 I ordered the 1/2 fish & 1/2 oysters dinner. The portion was tiny! A piece of bread, 1/8 of a cup of coleslaw, 2 fish sticks (Yes, fish sticks!) and 4 breaded oysters that were the size of nickels tossed on top of a handful of shoestring fries! It's a great neighborhood joint that has fantastic food. It's nothing fancy, but it's good eats. If you are looking for good Louisiana food in Austin I whole heartedly suggest going to this place. It's a classic east Austin spot that I hope will be around for a long time to come. I suggest the oyster po-boy! Also they have great music at night! read more

If I had been drunk, this place would have gotten about 4 stars. Would have saved me from a nasty hangover too, most likely. Unfortunately, I was sober. We got delivery, and it was totally not worth it, money-wise as well as food-wise. My boyfriend has lived in New Orleans and works as a chef, so he knows of what he speaks- and his verdict was "It's just like what you get in New Orleans... but that isn't necessarily a good thing." We asked for extra remoulade, and received a tiny container of what we think was Heinz chili sauce and a packet of tartar sauce. Thank goodness for chef boyfriend, who mixed us up some actual remoulade with that and some mustard we had handy. The roast beef Po-boy would have been the hangover-slayer, and it was nice and big and greasy and generally perfect drunk-off-your-ass food. The half fish half crawfish platter we ordered came with some greasy, under-cooked fries, some very sweet coleslaw, and no fish, just a bunch of tiny battered-and-fried things that might have been crawfish once upon a time. The boyfriend's remark: "Your usual frozen and fried stuff. No love." I wish I could comment on the hush puppies we ordered, but sadly they didn't make it to us. So... yeah. If you're stumbling by completely wasted, go for it. Otherwise, probably best to steer clear. read more

Best crawfish in Austin, spicy and big, easy to peel. I tried Shoal Creek Saloon and was disappointed, and these crawfish are MUCH better. Super cold beer. Gumbo is very good too. It was so good that we ate 15 pounds! read more

I wish I could attach a photo of the very sorry state of a salad. For $10 dollars I got about 1 1/2 cup of iceberg lettuce, 1/4 of diced tomatoes, 6 dill pickle slices, and 6 medium or less blackened shrimp (two approached medium and the rest were smaller, and I worked in a fish wholesaler). The on-line menu stated that there would be balsamic vinaigrette dressing but what I received was buttermilk ranch, which I just don't like. Putting this next to the Panera's Strawberry-Poppy Seed Chicken salad with a baguette roll I had the day before for $10, I know where I will be heading. Would much rather support local, but there still has to be quality. read more

I love this place! The fried shrimp tacos were great and I was not expecting to get that many (crisp and delicious) cajun fries for just $2. The atmosphere is nice and casual, the music is good, and if you're having fun at Full Circle or Dozen Street you can get your munchies taken care of without walking your tab. Stumbled into this little gem while hunting down beignets. I loved the vibes in here. It's a small place and not fancy...but who cares...especially when it's all about the food (and I hear there's good music there on Tuesday and Wednesday). I really enjoyed my food. I walked in and ordered a happy hour lonestar for 2 bucks. Then I started off with a gumbo which I found to be meaty and flavorful. For the main course I ordered a 1/2 fish 1/2 shrimp platter. My food came out fast and it was fresh out of the fryer. It was just the right amount of breading it wasn't over breaded. I will definitely come back here and I look forward to returning to try their Jambalaya. Table next to me had a po boy that also looked great. The server was really nice and gave great service. (This order was placed through UberEats) Re: crawfish boil - I ordered 4 lbs and paid extra money for 2 sausages and potatoes so thought I would receive 4lbs of crawfish plus those extras. However, I received all in one bag: crawfish, potatoes, only one sausage, and half a corn that I didn't want. All that was 4lbs and 2oz. After removal of the potatoes, sausage, and corn, the bag of crawfish weighed half a pound less-- thus leaving a little over 3 and a half lbs of crawfish. In addition to that, the remaining liquids weighed 6oz. So I felt a bit shafted as I only received 3.25lbs of crawfish for my order of 4 lbs, and the sides were missing one sausage I ordered and I didn't want the corn. As for the crawfish, yes they were good and a few were even nice sized. However, I also found and picked out about 5 dead (very limp, rotten and/or soggy) crawfish. Overall though, I enjoyed the crawfishes though but if I were to order next time, I wouldn't select any of the add-ons. I would expect that the potatoes, sausage, and corn would be provided as typically those are filler to the crawfish anyways and thus paying for them is pointless as it won't change your order. read more

I was born and raise in New Orleans. I know New Orleans cooking. I cook my own Gumbo for the Holidays. Because it reminds me of home , I love it. My daughter and eat there all the time. The fish platter is divine and worth the money. That fried fish was great! I will be back! read more

If I am just reviewing the food--5 stars! So far, I've had fried fish, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, gumbo, hushpuppies, dirty rice, beignets, and bread pudding. Yum! (though the boiled shrimp were a bit spicy for my taste--I could only eat three) The service was wonderful. I went with my wife and my parents and when my mother's meal didn't come out from the kitchen, they apologized, brought it a bit later with about 3x the fish on it. Very friendly. 5 stars Let's face it, the place is a d-I-v-e! My wife had me look inside to make sure we wanted to go in. (I'd had the food before via UberEats, so I KNEW we were eating there.) I don't think it is a racist issue, but a realist one. East 12th between Comal and Chicon are on the outer edge of the gentrification that has transformed the area from dangerous to classy. If it will bother you to be in a place that is dimly lit with the A/C set on "just cooler than outside" and a good chance of getting a taste of being in the minority, make the mistake of not eating here. Because with all the negatives of the ambiance, the food and folk more than make up for it. read more
