I have always had a strong adoration for all things creole. This is one of my favorite little spots. The shrimp tacos are delicious and so are the red beans and rice. The poboys are great! Let's be honest, I've never had a bad meal here and the owners is a New Orleans native. He lost his business to hurricane Katrina and relocated here in Austin. I will say the food and drink is a little pricier than what I was expecting, but this place has instantly moved up the ranks as one of my favorite little spots in Austin. The best shrimp po boy I've ever had! The French bread was buttery and toasted. The shrimp had a tasty batter. They were really tiny shrimp (but a lot of shrimp) when it arrived, so I was skeptical at first, but I loved how you got shrimp in every bite! It was only $7.99 for the 6 in po boy. The atmosphere was definitely that of a hole in the wall bar with some drunk men that go along with that so that's why I chose only 4 stars. This is the real deal! If you want delicious & authentic Cajun / NOLA food, look no further! Sausage chicken Gumbo is legit. I didn't even have to add Louisiana hot sauce, which I usually always do. Po Boys are not to miss. They are huge with lots of filling. The fry temp & seasoning was perfect (Great flavor, fresh w/ a nice crunch to our fried items). Also, the French bread roll was soft and chewy. Dare I say that this Po Boy rivals with Parkway Po Boys (NOLA). We also tried out the daily special, blackened catfish with a crawfish étouffée, which was spot on with a proper dirty rice. They also have ice cold Abita amber. First of all, the seafood here is SO GOOD and it's definitely got that authentic new orleans taste and feel. The ownership is very friendly and down to earth --- this little "hole in the wall" place is way better than any of these fancy fake and overpriced seafood places especially out here in Austin. I have mixed feelings about this place. Food was 2 stars at best. My fried shrimp basket had teny tiny shrimp which were pretty tasteless. My son had the sampler and it looked just ok and had some tastier food which I sampled. Drinks were on the weak side but cheap. I loved the music on Tuesday night! Blues and local vibe with different bands playing- they were all great and highly entertaining. I was able to bring my teenage son so we totally enjoyed the music together. Your ultimate hole in the wall seafood shack. I got the half shrimp and half oyster po boys, which were delicious. The bread is bigger and tastier than your typical po boy roll, which was a nice surprise. When I ordered, I went with the half and half because I didn't think one would fill me up. The sandwiches are so big that one is definitely enough for one person. We did try a few sides - the jambalaya was pretty good, but the fries and red beans and rice were just OK. When I go back, I think I'll just stick with the po boy and jambalaya. Some restaurants are better eating in than taking out - this is not the case here. We tried this place out because of the Yelp reviews. It is in a part of town that some would call sketchy but seems to be slowly taken over by modernistic homes being built and the yuppie Austinites are sadly beginning to move in. We found an amazing art wall at the corner of the block and had a great conversation with a few people as well. The food is just great. I would've preferred a bit spicier but will request that next time. We had the blackened fish po-boys in which the fish was so smooth and almost creamy. It has a wonderful flavor. I had the crawfish poboy with a side of gumbo and it was also served on a perfect piece of bread with mayo, lettuce and tomato. You can choose between a 6" or 12". The gumbo had chicken and sausage in it with rice. Again, it needed more spice but a couple of drops of hot sauce gave it the boost it needed. I accompanied my meal with a splendid Bloody Mary as well. The owners were nice and courteous. The food is cooked fresh so order then take a step outside for some pics in front of the mural, enjoy the jazz music and then sit down to a great meal. I will say that the few locals that we struck up conversation with, they all mentioned to us not to be there after dark. We heeded the warning but will be back another afternoon. read more

Waited for a long period of time to find out that we couldn't get our food without an even longer wait because the New Cook couldn't turn on the grille and he said that things weren't prepped right for him.The owner nor his wife were there so we All got Cash refunds. The food maybe somewhat tasty, but the service is horrendous. After paying at the counter and waiting forever for our order at a table we selected, our food was dropped off. We were then virtually ignored as the band set up and started to play. After a few songs, we left. Imagine my surprise when I discovered later that by handing over my credit card and paying for the food at the counter, this actually opened a tab. A tab that did not close upon paying for the food at the counter. After the initial charge, and after we had left the restaurant, a tip was added. I just received the receipt this morning (two days after our visit). I have never encountered this before at any establishment; where you order and pay for food at a counter and then get a tip added on afterwards without my permission. Be wary in handing over your credit card to this place! read more

The food was INCREDIBLE, but the service was HORRIBLE! There was not a single employee in site for the first 15 minutes we were there. Another couple was there when we arrived already without their food. They informed us that there were only two employees working that day and that they were in the kitchen. When the waitress did greet us finally, she could not answer a single question about menu items. For example, she did not even know how many pieces of fish came home with different order options. We placed our order finally and she returned after about 10 minutes and gave me the total for our bill. We had not received any food yet. She asked me to pay for our food prior to receiving the food. This is highly unusual. I have never found this practice in my 50 years of dining experience in the US nor in any of the other of the many countries that I have ever traveled. That is insane! After declining to pay prior to receiving our food, we sat there trying to decide what to do and ended up giving in and paying as requested. I believe we had to wait another 20 minutes before receiving our food. Mind you, there was only 1 couple in the restaurant when we are arrived and they finish their meal promptly and left. No one else came to dine during the time that we were there. Our total experience was over an hour. The food was really good New Orleans food. I would have been very pleased had the experience not been so sour. I hate leaving a less than stellar review, but it is important for people to know before they go! read more

Definitely not worth what I paid for. I ordered the 1/3 shrimp, 1/3 crawfish, and 1/3 oyster po boy. First, there were no crawfish on it. Second, there were maybe 3-4 fried pieces on each part of the sandwich (except the shrimp, there were maybe like 5-6 shrimp on it). Regardless, it was disappointing, especially since the owner is from NOLA. The only good part about it was the bread. As a native New Orleanian I would not recommend this place to anyone. Étouffée is a roux, not a soup and over salting your food does not compensate for lack of flavor. If the owner is really from New Orleans he is doing an injustice to his hometown. I would love to enjoy some real New Orleanian food cooked with love in this town. This place should get absolutely 0 stars. For starters, I decided to come in during the lunch rush around 11:45am. The half fish/half crawfish po-boy I received was pretty soggy (way too much mayo). For the money I was about to spend, I figured it was in my best interest to eat the food and not complain. The sandwich overall was 2 out of 5. Now, the real colors of the employees started to show when they couldn't give me change for $100. They sent me walking to three surrounding corner stores to ask for change. None of them had any. After I walked back into the restaurant to tell them they did not have any change, they preceded to hold on my wallet as if I was going to walk out the bill. At this point, there was people there already seated and just awkwardly looking at me. I then left again to go find their change. No other store within the 10 blocks radius would give me change. At that point, I was just being inconvenienced. It not my job to go find change. After a whole hour of running around the east side of Austin I finally found somewhere to give me change for my bill. I walked back into the restaurant one final time and asked to speak to the manager. The server told me "you can speak to me." I decided to just pay the man and walk out without arguing. read more
