This food at BHC is amazing. The flavor of house style sauce is so good. I usually get shrimp and my daughter loves the king crab. The bolillo bread that you can dip into the butter sauce is also the best we ever had. Not sure if they bake it there but it is always warm and crusty on the outside and super soft on the inside. The location is easy to find but sometimes parking can be a little difficult. The building is very old and needs updated but the friendly service is outstanding. We drive 45 minutes just to have a meal here and is better than any crab place in Sacramento. Definitely recommend. read more

I loved this place! I bookmarked this place on our way to Chico and when we arrived at our hotel, it was right across the street. Done deal! The location is kind of an older diner coffee shop, but the food is fantastic. We love crab boil places and have been to quite a few. I always really enjoy a little crab, corn, shrimp and potatoes - but given there were only two of us, we chose crab, shrimp and corn as our main. The amount was more than enough to fill us up happily. Next time we are in Chico, we will have to come back! read more

When this place opened in Chico I thought, "How good a place can it be with a name like, 'Big Hot Crab'?" Well it turns out that it's amazing! This is a crustacean lover's delight. The owners, brothers Alan & Adam, are kind and very helpful. Make sure your lobster bib is secure, and prepare to get messy with buttery garlic & spiced goodness. A word of caution, king crab legs shells can be sharp and spiny. In my zeal to get at the deliciousness within, I've experienced some minor cuts and pokes on my fingers....totally worth it! I have gotten totally addicted to this place and now it's my treat almost weekly! The shrimp are super sweet and fresh with the heads on! The rest of the seafood is also great and you get a nice amount of food. My go to order for two people is 1 lb shrimp, 0.5 lbs mussels, 0.5 lbs sausage, 1 Dungeness crab cluster and 2 orders potatoes, house style, hot. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed but you will make a mess! Today, after celebrating my sons CSU Chico graduation, we gathered here for some great food. This place was recommended to me by a friend in class. Came through at 7:30PM and ordered to go, I expected a Boiling Crab vibe and that is what I got. Food: Food was impressive, for a small establishment the shrimp was relatively tasty and the flavor was pretty good. I got the 1 lb shrimp with medium spiciness with the house sauce, .25 lb sausage, three potatoes, and Cajun fries. Way too much food for one person for sure, I was so full when I got finished and very satisfied. Vibe: The decoration was pretty interesting, you can see the effort they put in to make the place as fun and interesting as possible. Behind the counter is a bit dirty, a lot of stuff everywhere, floors look very dirty but the food made up for it in my opinion. Service: This is the only category that needs improvement, I called about 4 times to make an order ahead but they never picked up. When I got there the gentleman took about 15 minutes to take my order and the order itself took 30 minutes to get out. There were only 2-3 people in the kitchen and just one gentleman working the register and waiting tables/cleaning tables. I wish they had more staff working to allow the restaurant to flow better. This is the second time I've left extremely disappointed. Ordered our food with a medium spice level after staff explained their medium spice to be similar to Thai hot. When the food arrived we quickly realized there was NO spice added to it at all. We asked if they could give us spice seasonings or something to make it spicier and we were told they couldn't. We were told they didn't believe that their chefs could mess up an order. Big Hot Crab. We tried it. It wasn't the best I've had, but it was still pretty good. The girl child and I did an appetizer of Crab puffs, and ordered a pound of shrimp, a pound of snow crab, half pound of sausage, a cup of rice, and one order of potatoes which is like 3 potatoes. That was enough for the two of us, with a little left over (rice, potatoes). The seasoning we did was super mild, with garlic, and it was actually pretty good. If you aren't sure, the seafood, potatoes, sausage are all boiled in one bag with the seasoning you select. They bring the bag out to you, and you can either dump it out on the table (hence the paper on the tabletop), or just eat out of the bag, which is what we did, to try and contain the mess. The crab wasn't the freshest as every leg that was cracked, the meat broke with it, but that is to be somewhat expected. The shrimp-really good, but beware, they serve head and legs on. Not a problem for the girl and I, as we know our way around a shrimp, but there was a table near us that had zero idea how to eat, or what to do. The sausage wasn't bad, but I expected it to be more like an andouille, and this was more like a kielbasa, but still flavorful and good. The staff was nice. There weren't many patrons when we were there for a late lunch. Prices weren't unreasonable except you only get one soda refill, which was fine for lunch, but if I was there for dinner, I would expect more than one refill. Overall, it was good. Maybe a little pricey for the area, but it was still good for the amount of food we got. read more
