Yikes. I came here and thought I would have an excellent experience but was really disappointed. Service was wonderful, our waitress was very friendly and sweet. She is the only reason I'm giving stars. Although it was pretty empty and it took her a while to get to us, she was very nice. Food: I ordered the Gumbo Ya Ya, and biscuits, my friend ordered the cornbread and a special soup they were offering that day. It looked really good, so we were excited to dive in. The gumbo was inedible. And when I say that, I mean it. The waitress did tell me that when the chef makes the roux he cooks it all the way just before it's burnt. Well.... unfortunately... mine was burnt and watery with oil floating to the top. No amount of hot sauce or salt could've fixed what was in front of me...believe me I tried. The biscuits were good, pretty bland in flavor but they added some jam that made up for it. The cornbread was okay, not so much my style but my friend enjoyed it. He is exploring the cultural heritage of the south, and reinvigorating old classics by drawing upon a much broader range of southern ingredients than some of his Chicago counterparts. For instance, Big Jones serves quite possibly the best biscuits I've ever had. One of the reasons behind the value of these biscuits, outside of their delightfully flaky texture, is the butter. The butter is unbelievable. Paul makes an incredibly light and sweet butter by incorporating sorghum, a southern staple that I've yet to seen in a midwest restaurant. The jam was similarly fantastic. Made in house, the liquid elements of the jam are cooked much longer than the actual strawberries themselves, giving the jam a wonderful flavor but also a strong consistency. That being said tough, some of Big Jones' menu items are much more delicious that others. Although everything is fantastic, consistency can be slightly off sometimes. The Catfish and Grits, while tasty, did not have as much of a flavor impact as the shrimp and grits. The fried chicken was lovely, but the pulled pork sandwich was nothing to write home about. Regardless, Big Jones is reinventing southern classics in a way that deserves your attention. Right now the menu at Big Jones is all about crawfish and I'm loving it! As a native southerner, I'm picky about my southern food, but the crawfish poor boy (as it's described on the menu) was fantastic. Elevated southern food, and the best of it. My partner had the crawfish étouffée and it was incredible, such rich flavor! I'm not sure I could eat it as my meal because it was so rich, but I'm so glad I got to sneak a few bites because it was so flavorful. The restaurant is beautiful with an open kitchen and plenty of tables. The servers were attentive and able to answer any questions. They were also really kind and flexible when I called about changing the time of my reservation that morning. Had the blood orange sorbet, and it was very tart, so be aware that it's more like a sour grapefruit, probably wasn't a good idea to have with my coffee...oops. My first time at Big Jones was a fine experience, but this time surpassed expectations. They are always changing their menu with the seasons, and trust me, right now is some of their best dishes! read more

Someone told me the fried chicken here was awesome...its true! I came here with a buddy for restaurant week yesterday and I loved every bit of it. Our server Sharmane was pretty good as she was quite helpful especially when we couldn't find a particular whiskey on the menu; Clyde Mays. I started out with a sazerac and then a Clyde Mays cocktail that was called the Italian something...I can't remember but it was good I instantly knew what I wanted once I looked @ the restaurant week menu. I started out with the pair of Cajun Boudin Balls which were amazing. Crispy pork liver and rice sausage fritter along with cayenne mayo made for a delicious appetizer. I then went with the coveted fried chicken...dark meat! I heard it was fried in leaf lard and butter...quite unique. It came on top of greens and had red beans and rice on the side...very good and filling. I forgot that we were owed a dessert with the setup. I had no choice but to go with the Rum Bread Pudding that was accompanied with sautéed bananas and citron ice cream. That may have been the 2nd best bread pudding I have ever had and a decent portion meaning not too big as I was full. Just an FYI, the whiskey list here is serious! Enjoy!!! Came here on Sunday for Brunch. My friends and I arrived around 10:45 am and it was pretty packed but there wasn't a large line. We were seated on the patio in the back. Be aware that there are bees swarming around the patio! If you don't eat Pork, your food choices are rather limited because most southern dishes include ham, sausage or a form of pork. They also do not do "make-your own omelette". I had the Peach Custard French toast with a cappuccino while a friend of mine had the Blueberry and Raspberry Carolina Rice Cakes with a side of sunny side up. While we waited for our food, our waitress brought over beignets. Although they looked delicious, they were dry. It would be nice if they served them with either syrup or some type of sauce. I think our waitress got the hint that we weren't crazy about them and then brought over some maple syrup. Our food arrived rather quickly- we waited maybe about 15 minutes. The peach custard French toast was delicious, it's a huge portion so you can easily split it among two people. They could have poured more maple syrup on it but the peaches were fresh and very tasty. I was absolutely blown away by my friends order of the rice cakes!! They were very tasty, you could hardly tell it was a rice cake. Highly recommend!! Bleh! Not worth the time or calories. The restaurant is nice, and seems like a place you'd like to spend time. The food just doesn't deliver. The fried chicken was very under seasoned and the coating crumbled off. To make things worse was the sweet chili sauce they put on the chicken and rice& beans. Who does that? The Cubano sandwich was just "off". Could it be eaten?yes, but you don't want to. I think customers should look elsewhere for southern flavors. read more

A Big Jones brunch had been on my list for ever and ever. Previously, I had only been here for dinner, which had to have been a couple years ago. On this occasion, I had a hankering for a burger, so the house ground beef burger was all mine. And it was some of the freshest meat I've eaten in a long time! So juicy, so tender. The burger was a little heavy on the garlic aioli though. I'm not too crazy about Cajun seasoned fries either, as they leave a MSG-y aftertaste in my mouth, but all the more room for dessert... ... which was red velvet cake! Whenever I'm in a mood for a little Big Easy but can't escape the Big Shoulders, I amble on over to Big Jones. The decor of the restaurant reminds me of New Orleans, somehow. It is a clean, well lit space, and the chairs evoke the wrought iron look of New Orleans for me. It is bright and airy and anchored by a bar that seats, as I recall, around 10. A back patio was added this summer, which is great but a bit of a mixed blessing. It is very small (maybe 10 tables) and poorly lit - we could barely see our entrees. There is also a hint of eau de garbage from the dumpsters next door, which it unpleasant yet not out of place for a restaurant evoking Bourbon Street. Fortunately once we moved away from the fence we did not notice it as much. They really nail New Orleans on brunch. Simply for the privilege of showing up, you receive free beignets, which are doused with powdered sugar and as authentic as those at Cafe du Monde and elsewhere in the Crescent City. The rest of the menu is heavy on ham and grits, as it should be, and I've always been very pleased whenever I have brunch here. The fact that it accepts reservations for brunch is another key element to Big Jones' attraction. Dinner menus vary with the season, but I've always been pleased. There is currently a juicy seared duck on the menu which I highly recommend. The crab cakes are also excellent, full of crab with very little filler. I've had their steaks here before, as well, and have always been pleased. I can't say that the menu is entirely authentic low country food, but it is quite good. The wine list is small but has some good values, including excellent Rhones and Riojas. The real focus here is on the cocktails, specifically bourbon and rye. The sazerac here is killer, made with just the right amount of absinthe. It is a must have whenever you are here, even (or especially?) at brunch. Big Jones has been steadily increasing their bourbon and rye selection over the years, and now have a Bourbon Society where you can have a free taste of the bourbon of the month every time you visit, and after you've tried all of their bourbons (which are legion), you are entitled to a complementary dinner for two. Just came from having lunch at Big Jones. I've been here once before for brunch and was quite happy with the experience. This time around we came on a weekday to check out their brunch/lunch. The place was pretty empty, so it was no problem getting a seat. During the weekends, this place is packed so it would be best to make a reservation during the peaks hours. They have a special going on right now, which is Soul Food Week. Upon being seated we were given the menus and I was surprised to see the Dinner Menu during the lunch hours. The whole time I was thinking what happened to lunch? I should have asked about it but kinda just brushed it off. Later I found out there was a lunch menu because as other customers came through they asked for other menus. It would have been nice if our server asked if we had questions about the menu. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. And I wish we started off with the right menus. I was definitely looking forward to a brunch. We ended up trying a bowl of their Gumbo a la Treme and Fried Chicken Blue Plate. The Gumbo wasn't bad but I couldn't really tell if there was actually any smoked sausage. I seldom go out for breakfast/brunch, and when I do, I make sure to try and choose a restaurant with options that that I wouldn't easily be able to cook on my own. Big Jones was a perfect choice. I came in a party of 2 for Sunday brunch. We didn't make a reservation but happened to come in before the rush. We were quoted a 20 minute wait time that was actually under 10 minutes. Beignets: $3 for 3 beignets! The yeast flavor was a bit too overpowering for my liking, and the texture was just a bit too dense, but overall, an enjoyable bite. Gumbo appetizer: It's a good thing that this was appetizer-sized and not full-sized. It was very salty. Eggs New Orleans: Absolutely delicious. The creamy egg yolk tied everything together and each element of the dish complemented the rest. I'm glad that the crab was prominent. The Potatoes O-Brien were perfectly seasoned and crispy and also had several diced jalapenos mixed within it. My only critique for this one was that the popovers were just a tad chewy. The Eggs New Orleans really impressed me. That itself was a solid 4-star brunch dish. Otherwise, there were a few hits and misses in the meal. Overall, the food, the portions are just slightly larger than average, and the restaurant is lively. We had a larger than 8-person party and they were able to accommodate our group (they sont usually permit reservations more than 8). The drinks were great (i had the chatum artillery punch) which was deceptively strong. The wait staff were all attentive, polite, and informative. We ordered two of every item listed as appetizers, homemade bread, and snacks to start off the night. The biscuits were delivered fresh out of the oven and was gone in a blink of the eye. We ordered a total of 5 orders by the end of the night. The corn bread was a hit as well. The boucherie board was large and inviting with all homemade breads, spreads, meats, and pickled vegs. Those who got the gumbo loved it, however it seemed too smokey to my liking. Large amounts of sauage and meats were included in the soup. For the mains, we had a majority of the items on the menu. I shared a crawfish pie and a half fried chicken. Crawfish pie, a seasonal item, had a very butter and flaky crust while the filling creamy yet the crawfish seemed to have been frozen. The dark meat fried chicken was juicy and flavorful and the crust was crispy with a hint of sweet ... amazing. The white meat fried chicken was on the dry side. The ham fat fried kennee fries and potato salad were not impressive to those who tried it, however the sweet potato hash was a favorite. Those who had the catfish and the shrimp grits entreed liked what they got. Everyone was happily fed with a few pant button popping, therefore we had no room for dessert. Located in Andersonville, a Swedish neighborhood established in the 1850's by Swedish immigrant farmers, Big Jones offers a tranquil ambiance meshed with a modern vibe! For my wife, Shrimp and Grits: Laughing Bird shrimp, mushrooms, and tasso ham gravy. She also ordered a buttermilk biscuit which must've been prepared by the hands of a neurosurgeon; one who had a doctorate in baking. It was that good. For myself, Fried Chicken & Biscuit: fried chicken, biscuit & creamy gravy, with collard greens. Typically, I do well verbalizing my experiences, however trying to explain how well prepared, how shockingly moist, how cheerfully golden brown this chicken was would be a challenge. To add insult to injury I had one of those biscuits that I raved about earlier, I was also blessed with collard greens. Every bite had to have a piece of chicken, biscuit and collard greens. Any other approach would have been morally upsetting. Lastly, to whoever made my Manhattan..thank you. It was sensational. Solid. A friend was visiting from abroad and I wanted to give her a full American experience. So the three of us arrived at 7:30 PM on Sunday for some finger-licking fried chicken. We were immediately seated even without a reservation. The fried chicken is an obvious must-order but we also tried the gumbo ya ya. It is very different from ones I have had before. It was very dark and thick, but flavors were smokey and spicy. I especially liked the mix of andouille sausage, chicken and pork. One order isn't ideal for sharing among three, unless you only want a taste of it. I had the fried chicken with dark meat, collard greens, and sweet potato. The breading is very unique and exceptional. It was not heavily salted or breaded, but there was a very good crisp without overdoing it. The meat was kept moist and tender. The collard greens and sweet potato, on the other hand, were complete opposites of each other. The greens were a bit too salty and bitter whereas the sweet potato were very sugary. Lights are pretty dim in here, but it is generally speak easy. I would most likely return for more fried chicken. read more

If the grits were prepared more like polenta with more sharp cheddar or Parmesan cheese, the dish would have been perfect! I'm from Minnesota down for business and its restaurant week in Chicago. I decided on Southern food because I grew up in the south and I was staying nearby at a friend's house. I had no reservation (which I was worried about) but the gracious host was able to sit me at the bar. It was a little after 5pm so the place wasn't to packed initially. I had ordered from the set restaurant week menu. Appetizer Gumbo greens with cornbread pieces, Fried Chicken with a taste of jambalaya, hot Monkey bread and cheesecake. The Greens and Bread were great. The chicken tasted pre cooked and was dry unfortunately and the bar service was so bad I had to wait 20 plus minutes to get my check. I just got the cheesecake to go and couldn't wait any longer because i no offered refills of any of my drinks or water. I even laid the credit card down so he could see if he would glance over. I asked him 3 times forthe check. If I had cash I couldn'teven just walk out becauseI didn't know the cost. He was great with the other 3 couples at the bar laughing, smiling and offering suggestionsand small talk. But his service to me wasn't good. Came in around 10:45am and was seated quickly (wasn't busy) but there was a steady flow of people coming in/out. 11:05 and we havent been offered water or seen by a server. Server finally shows up at around 11:10 and takes our order. We think it is all smooth sailing -- WRONG! Daughter's food comes out at around 11:20 (just waffles and fruit) and we expected our order to come out. Lo and behold 11:40 me and the hubs are still waiting for our food. Almost an hour from coming in NO FOOD. Making matters worse the table who sat after us who also ordered a fried chix dish was served, their entire table was served. My husband had it and we asked for the check for my daughter's food and complained to the server. Server explains it's because they ordered a different fried chicken and our order takes longer. Well you know what, as a server it was YOUR JOB to educate or inform us that the menu item takes approximately x amount of time to cook and ask if we were willing to wait. First and last time coming over. Oh and the beignets were nasty - underdone and smothered in confectioners sugar, what a joke. I went to this restaurant during restaurant week. The food was absolutely delicious. But the service could be improved upon. We waited at least 15 minutes before a waiter came by. Then when we ordered the food, we asked for another round of drinks. It took 20 more minutes for my drink to come and they forgot about my husband's drink. Appetizers came but we barely finished and then our entrees came out. At other tables, we noticed entrees were being served and appetizers were not even finished. I would have ordered other drinks but we were worried that they would not arrive. I ordered the friend chicken and my husband had the duck entree. So good. Ambiance could have been better. My wife and I came here for brunch. Food was phenomenal. Fried chicken and shrimp and grits was a instant hit. Greens and Mac & Cheese was really good as well. Biscuits were good as well. Been here a fee times now with my husband and we always order the same thing - the Eggs New Orleans (like a Benny but with crabcakes on popovers) and the crawfish omelette - because they are so good. The banana pancakes are pretty good too, with slices of banana inside, though I thought the texture was a bit on the softer)mushier side for my taste. I really liked the streusel topping though. Came here for brunch with some friends. I made reservations for 11a on a Saturday, but I don't think it was necessary since there were plenty of empty tables at that time. It did fill up by 12p, though. I tried the beignets, hot chicken biscuit with turnip greens and the shrimp and grits. The beignets were okay, a little chewy and served with a ton of powdered sugar. I accidentally inhaled too much and almost choked, lol. My hot chicken biscuit was pretty good. The fried chicken was very tasty and crunchy, but there was a ton of batter that ended up crumbling off which revealed a pretty small amount of meat. The chicken was tender, though, and had a good amount of spice. I thought it could have used a few more pickles and the sunny egg was overcooked. The yolk appeared to be runny, but it was actually congealed. The biscuit was okay, but it was a little dense and not really crumbly. Their turnip greens are made with coconut milk, which was a nice surprise. I didn't really care for the shrimp and grits. I wouldn't recommend them. Overall, brunch was just okay. Nothing really stood out, but it wasn't bad. They do offer brunch reservations, so that is definitely a pro if you don't like to wait around for tables. read more

Restaurant is great from a good perspective... however I don't suggest coming for lunch. Barely anyone here and the server (Kelvin) has not checked on anyone. Simply just stands around (maybe he is new) but for folks looking for a quick bite and maybe some water.... look somewhere else. I understand a new server but there is an arrogance to my experience. Our first visit we has extremely poor service who seemed to be busy doing other things.As for our dinner we ordered Southern Chicken. I would say it for the Price was the worst meal I have had in any restaurant. I complained and it go No attention. Telling me that they did not Take my concern seriously. read more
