You definitely need to come early if you want to get the oxtails because they sell out real quick. I got the fried catfish with Mac n cheese and dirty rice. The catfish was fried very well and the fish was very flaky and not fishy at all. The dirty rice and Mac n cheese were also good. They seem to have run out of things as time goes on so it's more of what they have left if you come later. The staff was very nice and the food can take some time to wait. read more

I finally tried Big South Food Truck and wow -- this is soul food done right. It soothes my Southern roots in the best way. I ordered the fried catfish plate with collard greens and cornbread. The catfish was perfectly golden and crispy on the outside while staying juicy and flaky inside -- seasoned beautifully without being greasy. The collard greens were tender and flavorful without being overly salty, really seasoned perfectly and the cornbread had a great texture -- moist and warm but not overly sweet. And then some bonus surprise hush puppies that were so so good! Crunchy on the outside, soft and savory inside -- it really rounded out the meal and left me smiling. Prices are fair for the quality and portion size (my plate was $21), and the service vibe was friendly and welcoming. Their menu's stacked with everything from Big South Wings to ribs and jambalaya, and I'm already thinking about what to try next. Find this truck and go! I ordered the shrimp poboy, corn and sweet potatoes and all had the right southern hospitality feel to it! We originally came to try the oxtail, but they had just sold out when we got there. They had great customer service, nice and friendly. We ended up getting the Fried Catfish, side of Collared Greens and Mac n Cheese. The Catfish was made fresh and was nice and hot. Our catfish was either fried a tad bit too long or they needed to change their oil because it had a slight burnt taste. It was still good, and had a great crunch/crispness. Being from the south, I was extremely happy to find this food truck set up really close to home. I decided to start with the smoked oxtails with a side of collards and fried okra. The oxtail was coming off the bone and super tender, tons of flavor and I would absolutely eat it again. The sides were good as well, exactly what I'd hoped for. The portion was enough for two people to split, but if I was starving, I might be able to eat a whole plate by myself. I really enjoy the rotating menu, and the staff was friendly. Overall I would say it was exactly what I had hoped for. With the south salt lake location, there isn't anywhere to sit and eat, so just plan on taking it with you. The smell of the smokers made my husband and I want to cry. Prior to Utah we spent over a decade living in Texas and Georgia and Florida. Southern food has been missing since we moved here. And man did this place hit the spot. The smoked oxtails were so good. And massive. I got the mac and cheese and collard greens with oxtails. It's been so long since I've had collard greens and they were perfect. My husband got the ribs with candied yams and corn bread. He ate every bit of that plate. We also got the gumbo and it was excellent. We drove 35 minutes from AF to try it out and was worth the drive. The gentleman at the table taking orders was super nice as well! Came here after hearing all the hype & wanted to see if it was true. Let me start by saying the staff was great and very friendly! Ordered 2 plates, oxtail w/ mac & candied yams & fried catfish w/mac and corn nuggets. The oxtail was delicious! Very flavorful and meaty, they don't skip out on the portions either. Mac was okay, wish it was baked 6.5/10, corn nuggets had a good sweet/salty taste 9/10 & the candied yams were good as well 8.7/10. Now, the reasons why this place is a 3 star and not a 5 (in my book). My catfish was too salty (could've been just that batch idk) that I didn't even finish it & lastly, I understand waiting is part of the food truck game but I waited an hour for only 2 plates which put a sour taste in my mouth, so go as soon as they open! read more

What can I say about big south their oxtail plate with the jasmine rice and the juices is definitely on point. I was blown away today with their baked beans the flavor in that not sure where they get it but it sure put a good smile on my face mac & cheese, but again those oxtails are tender. Omg is an understatement of how good this food was ! I was craving some catfish! && I will have to say I don't think I'll ever want to eat anywhere else. Being new to Utah I am still finding my way around. I'm sooooo happy I stumbled upon this GEM! This food literally tastes like I could slap my momma . This place was highly recommended so my som and I thought we'd check it out. We decided to get three meals so we could try more since everything looked amazing. Each main comes with two sides and we wanted to try them all. Everything seemed to somehow be better than last. The collard greens are the best I've ever tasted- so much tender meat and just the right amount of heat. I'd never heard of Corn nuggets before- fresh, sweet corn in a perfectly light, crispy breading. I could eat them all day long. Mac and cheese and the seasoned corn were also perfection. Nothing here is ordinary. I have never had catfish in my life but this was what we were told we *had* to try so I thought today was the day to go for it. I only got a bite because that's all my son would share with me but it was enough that I will be ordering it next time. Now, the chopped cheese sandwich is famous for a reason. I don't know if I can adequately describe it but every bite is bliss. They put some sort of caramelized onion spread (I could be wrong but that's what it tasted like to me) on it and that touch of sweetness complimented the meaty cheesiness perfectly. If you think I'm overusing the word perfect, you're wrong. I would argue I haven't used it enough. It's as if the heavens opened up and a host of soul food angels were sent down by the good lord himself and sat on this man's shoulders to inspire each creation. WOW! As I'm smackin on my Catfish that is perfectly cooked and made to order. The Corn Nuggets are a little pop of heaven with a light hint of sweetness, which went well with the Lemon Pepper wings! It was soo hard to choose from the menu that has plenty to offer. I look forward to the next trip to SLC from AF to get a great plate of satisfying food for a fair price.
