$13 bowl - classic mala broth
    Karen K.

I love this place. A bold statement, but I can say that it's probably one of my new favourite restaurants, with some slight hiccups during my first visit. It's a bit hectic right now because the restaurant just opened, but I only waited 30 mins on the waitlist. Inside can also get overwhelming, especially when there's no signage or direction on where to go. There's an iPad at the front door where you put your name and number down on the waitlist. There was one staff member near the bowls area directing people, but there's no official stand or podium that shows that's where you're supposed to go to check in. This process needs to be fixed. There are lots of hot pot ingredients to choose from. The price of your final bowl is based on weight. My bowl was only $13! I love the variety of fish balls, vegetables, meats, seafoods, and noodles. There are also a lot of soup broths you can choose from. I ordered the Classic Mala Broth, medium spice, and that was really good. Their sauce station was stacked with lots of toppings to add. They also have a big bubble tea menu. I ordered the Matcha Slush Latte. Really good flavours. And a small appetizer menu. The fries and deep fried seafood were good. They also serve ube icecream as a dessert too. Overall, I love the food and quality of the dishes. You definitely need some patience when coming here though. Especially if there's a big group of kids in front of you. They take their time and there's not much space for you to get around to hop to the next ingredient station.

Big Way Hot Pot finally made it's way to Markham. A self serve hot pot experience where you grab your own ingredients, pick your broth and pay by weight. Super popular concept right now and I'm so glad it's here! I came during their soft opening and thought the space is big and clean. Thought the cashier staff was very nice, but definitely asks way too many questions with customizations/ drink orders/ add ons, etc., since it took a long time per person and there was a line forming behind us. They also have a DIY sauce bar which is always a nice touch. Bibs on the side to prevent splattering onto your clothes and the best part is of course the complimentary ice cream at the end of your meal. I came with a few people so got to try the different broths, here's my ratings for each: Signature Mala 5/5 - Loved that this wasn't burn my tongue spicy and numbing. Great flavour. Collagen bone broth 5/5 - Clean tasting rich soup. Made with premium pork bones. Tomato broth 3.5/5 - Thought this didn't have much tomato taste to it. Tom Yum 3.5/5 - This was a good sour and hot soup taste but I didn't love the coconut milk that they put in the center of your bowl. Overall, a great spot to get an individual hot pot meal that is paid by the gram.

I used to go to Big Way when I lived in Vancouver and this new location didn't disappoint. Everything was exactly as i had imagined with the setup and the broth options. The staff were efficient. We walked in and were handed a lot and tongs. After choosing our food ($3.89/100g, 100g minimum), we paid at the cashier. Then we were seated almost immediately even as a table for 5. The current soft serve flavour is chocolate. The only downside was that the broth could be hotter and there could be more broth in the pot.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the newly opened Big Way Hot Pot in Markham and it was certainly a treat! Their concept is simple. You choose all your own ingredients from a multitude of choices, including meats, seafood, vegetables, noodles, and more. Your choices are weighed to determine the cost, and then you choose the flavour of your broth. They cook it for you and bring it to your table. My friend and I must have made some great choices because it was all delicious! Choosing our ingredients made sure we got exactly what we wanted. My picks included smoked duck, lamb, tofu, vermicelli, veggies, and their signature spicy broth. Hers was a little more seafood forward, with purple yam noodles. The combinations are endless! I also had their Strawberry Sparkling beverage with Popping Boba and it was very refreshing. I even got to choose my sweetness level and it turned out perfect! An Ube ice cream cone completed a very enjoyable meal. If you like fresh food, with the ability to choose your own ingredients, check out Big Way at McCowan and Hwy 7 in Markham.

Interesting concept! Pay for what you want in your soup. Similar to the idea of those "weigh and pay" salads at Whole Foods. We came in on a weeknight. Didnt realize it was grand opening week. We waited almost 2 hours to get a table but were determined to stay and wait as they were promoting a free Jolly Tea (wasnt sure what that was exactly but we like free) with any soup purchase. Upon entering, you are given a large skillet type bowl and a sturdy set of golden tongs. You pick toppings you would like while keeping in mind the heavier your bowl, the more you will end up paying. They have so many options from fish balls stuffed with salted eggs, meat balls, quail eggs, shrimp, squid, thinly sliced pork and beef. Noodles: udon, rice, egg, spinach,,taro noodle. Veggie options galore from greens to mushrooms. You then choose your broth. They have spicy mala, or collagen(bone broth). You leave your pot with the staff, take a number and are seated at your table. There is a sauce station with green onions, chili oil, sesame paste, cilantro to name a few. Someone takes your piping hot personalized bowl of soup to your table identified by thay number you picked up. Finish off your meal with a nice ube soft serve on a black sesame cone and a jolly tea (reminds me of white rabbit candy, yum!) delivered right to your table. These 2 deserts came free with any bowl purchase. Laid back, casual set up. Recommend for anyone trying to satisfy a simple soup craving! Grand opening wave should have died down so just hoping its no longer a 2 hr wait.

We got invited to the soft opening of Big Way Markham and took it as the perfect chance to try ingredients we don't usually go for--and it did not disappoint. The experience is pretty straightforward: you're greeted at the front, handed a bowl and tongs, and then it's all about building your own hot pot. We loaded up on some favorites like the fortune bags, spam, napa cabbage, and the cheese-filled lobster dumplings (highly recommend these). Once you're done, everything is weighed and you pay by weight, then choose your broth and any drinks. I added cheese as a topping this time, but honestly I'd probably skip it next visit--it tends to clump together in the broth and wasn't as enjoyable as I expected. On the other hand, the cookies and cream drink was a win--basically like a melted McFlurry, so if that's your thing, you'll love it. We ended up with leftovers (portions can add up quickly), so we packed them to go and finished the night with ice cream. We got taro, but flavors rotate, which keeps things fun. Overall, a great interactive dining experience with lots of variety--perfect if you like customizing your meal.

Brand new big way location! We had the opportunity to stop by and give things a try. First of all service very very good. All the workers are super nice. They took their time to explain everything. Only issue we had was there was a big delay in getting our drink drinks. We were almost done our meal and then received the beverage. Really cool design and layout fun place to eat. On our particular day it seemed like they were having some issues with their music system so it would all of a sudden just stop but they would reset it or fix it. And onto the most important part! The food! It's a place where you choose your own ingredients and then you pay by the weight. So the more hungry, you are the more expensive it would be. And because it's a pick your own type of hot pot place it's a little difficult to leave a review so I will leave a review on the broth. 4/5 tomato broth. Even at maximum spice level, it wasn't spicy at all. My girlfriend does not eat any spicy and was able to handle it fine. So not sure if they forgot to make a spicy or if it was toned down a lot. Otherwise tomato broth was decent. Could have more tomato flavor. 4/5 collagen broth. Very nice clear broth not much flavor to it again not sure if they're still finishing off the broths and fine tuning the flavoring. 5/5 hotpot selection a lot of options to choose from the exploding fish balls or the filled fish balls are fun. Lots of noodle options. The pork slice slices when we went was frozen and one big piece so we weren't able to try it. But the beef was nice and tender when it was cooked. So we didn't have any issues there. After you make your selection and make your bowl, they pre-cook everything for you before bringing it to your table. You can customize your own sauce at the sauce bar while you wait. We didn't have any issue everything came cooked, but not overcooked, which was great. Overall, a great experience would definitely recommend trying big way hotpot if you have not tried already!

Staff were attentive and things came out at a good pace. It hasn't been overly busy the times I've gone, so hard to say how it holds up during peak hours, but no issues from my visits so far. Food 3.5/5 Solid selection of hotpot ingredients, with enough variety to keep things interesting. Quality was consistent across the board. They also have a bamboo-style drink that stands out visually and fits the whole theme well. Nothing felt lacking, but also nothing that completely blew past expectations. One thing I did notice is it hasn't been packed during my visits, which either means I've been going at quieter times or there are aspects I haven't fully experienced yet during peak hours. Still, for the atmosphere, parking convenience, and overall quality, it's an easy spot to come back to.

This Scarborough location has been around for a long time as seen by the dated interior. Nonetheless it's still popular with some good promos to compete among the huge swath of Asian restaurants in this plaza. We chose an array of hotpot broths including the house special spicy, sukiyaki, pork bone broth & tomato soup. We came here to celebrate a family occasion, and Liuyishou delivered with its good selection of broths, meats, seafood, and veggies. The $8 Wagyu add-on on weekend was a nice upgrade--thinly sliced, tender, and worth trying if you want something a bit more indulgent. The $3.99 all-you-can-drink station was a pleasant surprise too, making it easy to keep refilling without thinking twice. Service was quick even despite it being relatively busy and a bit loud during dinner peak. Note the pricing per adult ($34.99 weekend dinner) excludes the soup base which is about $17 for a large shareable pot or $9 for an individual sized pot per guest so the bill can rack up. The wagyu and drinks are add-ons too. They do have a 2 adult + 1 kid family combo for $73.99 on weekends with one drink pitcher excluding soup base. Dessert is included such as taro soft serve, rice ball soup & cold jelly. Skip it or hit it? Hit it for a casual, authentic hotpot experience. Wish they replaced the worn seats.

And my husband had a 2 meat shabu shabu with teriyaki base. The meat we chose beef and lamb. The teriyaki base came pretty quick. We started boiling the base and then we got the 2 bowls of meat, 1 bowl of vegetables, and a bowl of the noodles. The base was pretty sweet, but still good with all the ingredients. The dipping sauces were set on a central table that we made our own. I like sesame oil, sesame sauce, Shacha sauce with green onion and cilantro to mix them up. My coconut Tom Yum soup came a bit late. The meat was a good portion, the shrimp was 3 big pieces of tiger shrimp. And there was some veggies at the bottom with noodles. They were all in good portion, the only problem was the soup, it didn't seem to have coconut in it, the taste and the color looked like Tom Yum soup only. For lunch time, my Shabu Shabu was $16.xx+tax and my noodles soup was $9.80+tax. The price was pretty decent. I would like to come back and try other combinations.
