Do you get complimented on your hair EVERYWHERE you go? Because I do! Yanin at Bigsby House is the most amazing stylist I have ever had. It's no wonder I've gone to her for years now. I've always been super nervous about how my hair would turn out due to bad experiences with other stylists, and my hair turning out nothing like I want. This Review is for Phat Ly, I was having a hard time trying to find a stylist that wouldn't rip me off and could accomplish something close to what I wanted. I cancelled an appointment at another salon because the stylist wanted to charge me $400+ to color my uber short hair grey. That's when a friend referred me to Phat, who was an absolute godsend stylistically!! Phat was very kind and incredibly accommodating. I told him what I wanted and he made it happen, it's a bit darker than anticipated but that's only because my hair didn't lift as light as needed with the bleach (I'm a natural brunette but had my hair dyed black prior). He was able to get my hair to a beautiful shade of grey and put in subtle silvery warm highlights, that accent my hair in the sun gorgeously. I absolutely love my hair and I'm so appreciative of Phat's meticulousness when it comes to taking care of his clients. I've been seeing Leti for well over 7 years now and I have had her do pretty much everything possible to my hair... I've gone blond, almost every creative/punky color, balayage, ombré, short, layers, bangs...she's done it all! James is awesome. I have hard to manage hair (unevenly curly/wavy and really thick) and his cuts always turn out as planned. He has also executed elaborate dye jobs super well, and without once making me feel judged for my weird choices. One time I asked him to cut my hair in any way he judged most flattering, with the one caveat that I need to occasionally make it look glam. He thought about it for a while and then gave me the best haircut I've ever had. The salon is also pleasant, bright and airy, never gets super loud. Bigsby House delivered. The space is clean, open and beautiful. Leti had her work cut out for her. Previously, I had never had a hair cut I liked and I had never colored my hair (except for the teenage sun-in incident). Leti quickly assessed what was going to work for me. We talked about length, how much time I wanted to spend on it daily and what type of color would look best. She talked to me about Balayage (checkout their Pintrest board called shadows and lights). She let me know the difference between balayage and highlights and how it would only look better as it grew out...what?! Ultimately, I was so satisfied with my new cut. I felt like she made the effort to really understand what I wanted. The color result was dramatic (for a newbie), but clean and simple at the same time. I really like this salon, it's comfortable and open. Angel Vargas is my stylist and I have always been happy with her cuts. Recently, my daughter also started seeing angel to have her hair colored. Her natural color is red so it's time consuming to apply color as she has to go to blonde first. She has done blue and then most recently teal, it is healthy, shiny and beautiful. This review is for Yanin. I've been going to Yanin for about 3 years now. I've been her client since she was at Umbrella and when I found out she was moving, I had to move with her! NO IF's AND's or BUT's! She's taken my hair from dark brown to platinum to purple to ombré and back to dark brown again. Through the whole process, my hair stayed healthy and I never experience any dramatic breakage. She helped me through my hair regime to ensure that my hair is well maintained so I don't experience the horror hair stories we hear about going from dark to light. You don't typically get advice/answers from your hair stylist unless you're in their chair with them, but Yanin helped me through a couple hair "crisis" I had. Yesss!!!Tiffany is the BEST! I had a cut and Brazilian blowout. My hair is naturally frizzy, I like to calm it down with a blowout. After a blowout I can still rock my curls, but they're more healthy looking after a blowout. I can fall asleep on my hair and wake up looking beautiful. Without a blowout I wake up looking like Medusa, lol If I feel like running a flat iron through it, it only takes 15 minutes to do and stays beautiful for days. I was so excited for my hair cut appointment with Yanin. I read a ton of amazing reviews about her skills. Got to the salon a few minutes early. My appointment was at 4pm. Was checked in. It's 4:10pm. Nothing. 4:15pm. Nothing. When the clock hit 4:25 I went to the desk and asked if Yanin was running late or not here. I was told she was right behind the reception desk finishing up a client. No apologies. No, "we are so sorry for the wait". I went to sit down. At 4:30pm I decided to leave. I went to the front desk again and asked that my appt be cancelled. This review is solely based on the lack of customer service when it came to the wait. I understand that it's normal to run a little late 10-15 mins. But 30 minutes without a word from anyone? To me it's unacceptable no matter how great you are at styling hair. I'm hugely disappointed. I love Bigsby House. I'm a faithful client of Leti's. Let's just say if she decided to move to Antarctica, I'd find a way to get there just to get her to cut my hair. I'll tell you what I tell all my friends (which is why most of them go to her now), she manages to cut your hair without you feeling like she's rushing you. I also love that she supports you taking chances. In the past stylists have talked me out of styles and it makes me feel like they don't "get" me. Leti really explains what she's doing and the pros and cons of styles but ultimately lets you decide. I also feel like she gets the science of hair. Having wavy hair gives you anxiety to ever get your haircut. Leti is the first stylist I have ever been too, that I feel understands how my hair should be cut so I don't look like mufasa. I appreciate that I can get cleanups in between cuts as well. The staff is always great and accommodating. I love the industrial look and feel that they have going on. Its especially nice when the garage doors are open and there's a breeze while you get your hair done, kind of like being on a vacation (even if only for an hour). I like the layout of Bigsby House. It is a wide open space that feels almost like a warehouse, but more comfortable. There's none of that sense that the stylists are piled on top of each other. The front desk staff is wonderful, and I like that I can get my receipt emailed to me. The one downside to Bigsby House is the neighborhood. It doesn't exactly feel safe after dark. I had an appointment at 7pm the other night, and by the time we finished it was completely dark. I wasn't far from my car, but I think that will be the last time I schedule a late appointment. read more

I've been jumping around salons lately in search of an awesome haircut. I've been to a couple that range from $$$ to $, both leaving me with a good haircut. However, there was just always something inside that wasn't quite satisfied. I figured out why.. Pualani. This girl has talent and she knows it. They provide great customer service; you're greeted upon walking in, they'll offer you something to drink and have a comfortable place to wait, if you have to wait. It's so easy to book appointments online or by calling in, and they always remind you of your appointment. Blair is the best! She always knows what do to with my hair and she always makes me feel so pretty . Which can be hard to do at times. Lol. I always try to arrive a few minutes early to find parking. There's only street parking and sometimes I'll park on the northwest corner (in the cul de sac) of Race Street and Park Avenue. Love this salon! I've been going to Bigsby since Yanin moved to the salon (a little over a year now) and I'm there pretty much every 5 weeks because I love Yanin! (Also because I'm blonde and that means consistent upkeep :/) The salon is awesome, I love when they roll up the garage door in the summer, love the decor, love the staff and the best part is the large farm table I do work at while I wait for my touch up to process. Today was my first experience at Bigsby House. A few friends recommended it and so I decided to give it a try. This place is very industrial chic-- I like what they've done with the space. It is modern and comfortable. I cannot speak for other stylists (though I have heard great things), but I can speak for one. This review is for Valarie Rosales. Valarie is one incredibly cool woman. She is warm, she is kind and she is patient. She is also very easy to talk to, has a fantastic personality and a great attitude on life. Before she began, she took nearly 20 minutes to really talk to me to grasp what my goals were for our session. She referenced photos and went into detail to better understand what I envisioned. This is not a step everyone takes and it is a very important step, in my opinion, to avoiding miscommunication with something like your hair. To that point, she proceeded to give me a really great haircut. My hair went from drab and lifeless to having some layer and motion. I keep admiring the dimension she created and had no idea my hair could fall this nicely. She also paid attention to my fear of losing too much length and found a happy medium between that and making sure we cut off all the dead ends. FYI: The photos shared here on Yelp of her work hardly do her skills justice (no offense, the photos are lovely)...what you are unable to see here however is the range in her ability. Just trust me, she's the real deal. I spent many hours with her today in her chair, and while I am certain we were both tired, she never once let it show. The goal was to lighten my dark brown hair to a summer friendly shade with some balayage/ombre. My hair was exceptionally stubborn, and anyone who knows how hard a good balayage is, would know that its a lengthy process. The stylist literally PAINTS on your hair...its incredibly artistic and only someone experienced will get this right. I also learned it can take any stylist a number of sessions to achieve a level of extreme lightness safely (without damage), and so after a long genuine attempt to reach my goal, we scheduled another session to close the deal. Regardless, she checked on my level of comfort throughout and stayed attentive and accommodating. She also seemed really truly genuine with her every concern, which is rare. As stated, she cared that the lightness wasn't enough for me in one sitting and proactively offered to bring me back in for stage 2... In any case, I left with FULL proof that she knows what she is doing. The balayage she did is gorgeous and I can see full potential for more pop once my contrasting color is even lighter. The color I walked out with is beautiful too! She also was very knowledgable of hair care, strengthening the hair and overall tips (which I so desperately needed). The theme here is that she went the extra mile and remained positive, despite the challenge at hand. If you want a beautiful haircut or a painted balayage look from someone who takes their time and strives to deliver what you envision, Valarie is your girl. read more

Pualani is a styling expert. She has a knack for both color and cut- I love the looks she gives me and get complimented frequently. This is a fantastic salon--the space and décor are stylish--think rustic urban chic. Staff are wonderful too. And, unlike most salon's, you won't see pretentiousness dripping down the walls. I've been Katrina Carroll's client for the better part of a decade, and have followed her to her new location in Bigsby House. I could simply say that "Katrina is hands-down the best stylist I've ever been to" and leave it there as the honest-to-goodness truth...because it is. But I feel compelled to attempt to describe her talent in a way that assures potential clients that they're making the best choice in selecting her as a stylist. First, I've had nearly every hairstyle you can imagine. For a few years it was black with "bettie-bangs," then bleach blonde, then more natural blonde and short, natural blonde and long, highlighted, low-lighted and now...natural color pixie cut. On more than one (lol...6?) occasion(s) I've gone in to see Katrina to say "do what you will, but make it cute, and I need to be able to style it in less than 10 minutes" -and she's worked magic. No matter my hairstyle-cut-and-color-flavor-of-the-month, Katrina has been able to create something that I've always been happy (ecstatic) with. I wouldn't trust my hair with anyone else. I'm sad to say that I must update my glowing review. I went to Leti for what was a fantastic cut. I can't say enough good things about the cut however the customer service is beyond horrendous. On July 5 I had an appointment that I made the last time I had a cut. It was for 9am (their suggested time, not mine) for me and my son. They called two weeks prior to see if I could change the appointment and I told them that unfortunately I could not as I was going out of town the next day. They said ok which I assumed meant the appointment stood- wouldn't anyone? I never received another call. I went in at 9am on July 5 with my son only to find that Leti wasn't there and they weren't even open!! I left with my son and an hour later called the salon. The woman at the front was so rude and told me they had called and left a message (not true) and they had emailed me (they had incorrectly written my email address) to cancel! What???!!! They told me that since they didn't hear back they just assumed I got it. Huh? I asked the woman to have Leti call me since I assumed the front desk person was just awful and surely as an owner Leti wouldn't stand for this. Wrong. Leti called me back and apparently was working that day but an hour later- this made me fume. It almost would've been better if she just didn't come in that day but the truth was she just didn't want to come in an hour earlier for me and my son. Apparently an hour of sleep is more valuable than her clients. They could've at least moved us to an hour later or somewhere else that day instead of just dropping us without hearing from us! Leti was completely unapologetic. I told her that I could come in any time that day- I would rearrange my day. She said no- she was booked. I said what about after your last appointment? (I was trying to make it right more than she was) she told me if I came in after her last appointment she "couldn't guarantee me a good haircut" Seriously? Who would say that about their craft? Ultimately she called back and told me she had an opening of someone who cancelled. I doubt it. I think she offered to cut me over her lunch which was good but that should've been the very first offer, no? I went in and to her credit, she didn't charge me but she also didn't apologize. It was a decent cut but I just can't bring myself to go back there. Such disrespect. I don't care how good a hairdresser she is, customer service is everything. If you want to feel like a valued client and want your time valued and respected, go elsewhere. Leti had multiple opportunities to make this right and chose not to. Sad. read more
