This is a peanuts-on-the-floor, big-eaters-challenge, not-for-vegans kind of restaurant. The bright yellow sign outside almost promises a rootin' tootin' party inside, but you'll open the front doors to find a very mellow, subdued dinner barn which is nearly yawn-inducing. On a cold night, ask to be seated near the fire place. It's super cozy and warm! The menu is meat and sides; simple. No fuss. Steak, chicken and ribs... I think I saw a tiny corner of the page with seafood options, but you wouldn't be here unless you wanted something that used to cluck, oink, or moo. Don't be THAT person. After placing your order, you are presented with delicious, airy, warm, soft honey rolls that melt in your mouth. A Billygan's visit is worth the rolls alone! The real grub: The rib eye was cooked perfectly (I asked for medium rare and received a warm, red, beautifully bloody center) and the mashed potatoes were pillows of creamy, rich goodness. Broccoli tasted like it was out of a bag, but it was still fresh and cooked to a soft, tender state (the way I like it). I was too full for dessert, but it appears they have brownie cheesecake and strawberry cheesecake "shooters" as well as something called a "messy sundae." The sundae was beyond tempting, but I need to be able to buckle my seatbelt for the rest of my ride home. Service was excellent; attentive and friendly. Everyone smiled and acknowledged me who was within 10 feet of me and my glass was never empty. My guilty pleasure. I'm all for high-end dining and bottles of wine professionally uncorked at my table. But sometimes, screw it. Sometimes I want to shuck a bowl of peanuts and toss the debris on the floor as if I did, in fact, live in a barn, thank you very much. And sometimes I like to drink my single-serving vodka cocktails out of 500ml carafes. Roadkill lemonade. Hell yeah. The food is basic "American" fare - burgers, steaks, chicken, fish and chips, salmon. It's not fancy. It's not trying to be. Hopefully you figured that out with the whole peanut intro. The two claw cranes full of cheap stuffed toys at the front entrance are another big tip-off. What you get here is decent food, casual atmosphere, big drinks, and ridiculously delicious honey biscuits served piping hot by the basket load. Plus, the skins on their loaded potatoes are nicely crisped. If I'm in the Couve, I have no problem stopping at Billygans. W side of NE Hwy 99 just S of NE 134th St. After last time's experience I was prepared to give Billygan's a solid 4 stars. This authentic fairly dated, but clean roadhouse where you recreive complimentary peanuts to throw the shells on the ground is similar to many other roadhouses across the land sits loud and proud right off the 5 Freeway. I say loud because they have a very large sign of yellow, white, red, and black to remind everyone of their presence. Anyway after tonight's experience I think 3 stars is more appropriate. I actually enjoyed the food quite a bit both times I've been here. Service was awesome the first time I went. It was very expedient, cordial, and attentive just like one can appreciate. This time however, despite us arriving long before the busy time and crowds for dinner we were still stuck with a server that only did the bare minimum of her duties. Oh sure she was nice, but if you wanted anything whatsoever (including refills) then you would have to request it. The hostess wasn't much better in that she gave us a table right near where they seat large parties...well about 5:15 p.m. came and either a cheerleading or dance group came and the girls were actually pretty quiet and civil, but there was one mother that talked the entire time to her friend at a level that was so amplified you'd swear she was using a megaphone. I had flashbacks of how self centered and inconsiderate many people from Southern California can be... now you'd think I'd be kind of happy about this receiving a little bit of hometown hospitalityl, but NOPE... this lady was so loud and inconsiderate that once she arrived she pretty much ruined our time and we had to leave. *a side note to the establishment... this lady's rude and juvenile behavior had no affect on my rating; it was the fact that your hostess sat us next to a table where this could potentially happen. I'm here to tell you that we arrived about 4:20 p.m. and it wasn't that busy so the house cannot play the "limited seating available card." It was also our server and the other bussers that were working our area. I've worked in the restaurant business at all levels so I truly know what's expected. There is plenty of parking in their dedicated lot. The decor, palate, and lighting inside is on the dark side (no not like Star Wars just dark!) They do have quite a bit of those Neon beer lights inside though! I'm hoping future visits will prove to be more like my first visit. read more

Billygan's is not horrible, but its not very good either. I honestly don't know which company came first, but Billygan's to me is a Texas Roadhouse ripoff and fail. Texas Roadhouse has it all too: the peanuts on the ground, the fresh baked rolls, steaks, ribs, salmon, and bar.....only they do it 100 times better. Billygan's rolls are too yeasty in flavor and have no substance so they squish flat when trying to butter them. Billygan's also doesn't offer whipped cinnamon honey butter with their rolls. The food at Billygan's is more fitting for an old dive bar and not the family restaurant that it tries or hopes to be. So what to do since there isn't a Texas Roadhouse in this area? Hope that one will come eventually. In the meantime, keep going to Billygan's if you don't know any better and you might like it. read more

Meh. Yeah, yeah. You can throw your peanut shells on the floor. The peanuts were stale. We ordered drinks, nachos and a couple of SANDWICHES. It cost us $60. To be fair, they were prime rib sandwiches. When the drinks came, there was little to no liquor in them. Mine was a Whiskey drink (7&7). I could see through it. I try to be an easy going guy, so I finished it and ordered another. The next one was almost entirely whiskey. I figure at best they were low on that brand of whiskey, gave me the dregs, sent someone to get more and gave me a wollup on the next to make up for the first. At worst, their bartending staff needs more training. My wife's drink was extremely weak. She didn't order another. The nachos were simple and decent. Cheese, chips, green onions, sour cream, salsa and pickled jalapenos and chicken. It was served on a plate that was pretty small. Virtually impossible to not have something fall off every time you pulled a chip to take a bite. The guac was almost tasteless. The sandwiches were so-so as well. I expected more given their price. The waitress asked my wife how she wanted her prime rib cooked. She said medium rare. The waitress replied that it only comes medium well. Why even ask if that's the case? She was a good server though. There when she needed to be and conscientious. The bread for the sandwiches and rolls is good. Besides the bread, the sandwich was, quite simply, something akin to Carl's jr. I suspect that the "prime rib" used here is made up of the left overs from a previous night. It tasted heat lamp warm and oddly chewy. They used BBQ sauce that most likely came from a bottle/factory. The sauteed onions were tasty. I didn't finish. I'm a member of the "clean plate club". I ALWAYS finish. I ordered onion rings too. They were almost inedible. The onion was slimy and the batter was cooked on the outside but not done where it comes in contact with the onion. I ate one of the three. My wife had the same as me but with fries. The fries were pretty good. When asked if she wanted a box for her considerable left overs, we hesitated. We gave this place another shot after having a similar experience a few years ago. That time we were pretty turned off when our server said "Um, no man. You DO NOT want to order the mac n' cheese. Not after what I've seen." Save yourself some money. If heat lamp food is your thing, hit Applebee's right next door. Straight garbage. I ordered their version of a bloomin' onion and what I got was an unseasoned onion covered in an unseasoned batter with served with a thick side of mayo. Really? You couldn't add any spice or flavor? I then received an unseasoned steak to round out my meal. At least the meal was EXPENSIVE. 100 feet away is Applebees, just go there and get a better meal for less. Oh, and the hostess was rude. Is there a way to give zero stars? Our family had, in the past, been to this place several times but it had been a couple of years from this visit. I simply couldn't believe how a decent family restaurant could have sunk so low. The service was cursory - had to ask for water and ice tea refills twice before a second server happened by and helped us. But the worst was the stringy and fatty steak that was half gristle. I was here within the last week. The server was very nice and did a good job. I like that they provide peanuts and didn't notice whether they seemed stale. The place felt a bit dark because of the black ceiling, but there was enough light to read the menu. The tables are upholstered in some kind of plastic/leather fabric. It's weird to set your drink on a padded table. There was a dirty napkin and fork under our table. The water pitchers sit out uncovered on the backs of the booths. We got a complimentary basket of rolls and honey butter after ordering. The rolls were soft and hot, and the butter was very spreadable. However, they don't provide bread plates so we all juggled the super hot rolls while trying to spread butter on them and then set our buttery knives on our napkins. I hear in France you don't get a bread plate and are expected to put your bread on the table. This would be fine, but cleanliness didn't feel like a high priority and again, the tables are upholstered. I had the pulled pork sandwich. The bun was so soggy I had to eat with a knife and fork, although it did look like they toasted it. The barbecue sauce and coleslaw came on the side along with a pickle spear and pile of fries. It all came on such a small plate, I didn't have any room to put ketchup (Heinz squeeze bottle) to dip my fries. The food tasted fine, nothing special. I honestly am confused on why this place has some of the reviews that it has. We live is Washington but often visit family in Oregon. On our way home, my husband remembered always seeing a sign for here and wanting to try it out. So we decided what the hell. We both are beyond satisfied. Being Sunday, it was happy hour all day! I got just a cheeseburger with fries, but mannnnn was it delicious. And it was only $4.99!!!! I am ridiculously full and only ate half my burger and not all of my fries. Ranch is great too. My husband had the Texas Ribeye steak or something. It says it comes smothered in BBQ sauce, Cajun seasoning, mushrooms, and onions. He got it without the BBQ sauce. And it was delicious. Every bite. Which we also took half of that home too. Lol Which with his meal, he got two sides. He chose the loaded baked potato(so freaking delicious) and then the baked potato soup. BEST SOUP WE'VE EVER HAD FROM A RESTAURANT. We both enjoy soup. But this was like no other. Lol We asked and they make it in house every Sunday. We seriously contemplated getting some to go. My husband liked his t-bone, well enough, and the kid ate his sirloin, but having come from Texas (and Billygan's tries PAINFULLY hard to emulate a number of Texas style steakhouse chains), these folks don't hold a candle to any of the places we're used to visiting. I was feeling a bit off when we went, so I just ordered an appetizer and figured I'd pick on it and the boys would finish whatever I didn't. The potato skins were, I guess, deep fried? Over baked? I'm not sure, but they had this "skin" on them, for lack of a better word, that almost made them feel like they were stuffed with cheese instead of topped with it. I ate one and left the rest. I originally chalked it up to not feeling particularly well, but the boys - who generally demolish potato skins with aplomb - were similarly uninspired. Service was friendly, if slow. It's right up the road from us, so we'll likely end up back here at some point, but with all of the restaurants in the metro area, it is amazing that something so absolutely mediocre survives at all. read more

I had dinner with my husband last night. I ordered the Halibut Parmesan which was described as a lightly crusted halibut with parmesan cheese. What I got was a filet of fish covered (and I mean covered) in parmesan cheese then what seemed to be deep fried (I could be wrong but the golden crust and the oily feel led me to believe it was fried) and served on a single lettuce leaf. After I peeled off the cheese and put it on a separate plate, it took my KNIFE to cut through the severely overcooked fish. Follow it up with cold mashed potatoes and you have a meal that I will not be craving again anytime soon. Must be my bad for ordering fish at a steak joint. I enjoy a good greasy spoon. I've loved plenty of roadhouses, and truck stops, and diners. Billygans was none of these. It was extremely mediocre and--worse--it was also overpriced. The salad (a caesar) was tasteless. The chicken breast was fatty. The only good-ish thing was the baked potato, and even that was only decently passable. All this (and a glass of water) cost $14.00. This place isn't bad, and it has some pretty good happy hour deals up in the lounge. I had a hamburger with fries for $2.50 that was well worth it. Fries were good and the burger was definitely not appetizer-sized, despite its placement on the appetizer menu. We got out of there for $15 for the two of us, although we just stuck to soft drinks. My partner had the (disappointing) BBQ sandwich. It was way too salty and pretty fatty, and he didn't get but a few bites in before giving up the fight. Much to their credit, the server took it off the bill. So, avoid the BBQ sandwich. The service was overall quite good and the place seemed pretty well set up for sports-loving fans. Based solely on the food and drinks we got, I give this visit a 4 star rating. We each ordered a '57 T Bird and it was great! Not too long after our honey bread rolls and honey butter showed up (we got 3 and one small container of butter) and it was delicious. I ordered the A1 Whiskey Rib Eye (rare) with mashed potatoes and Caesar salad, my friend ordered country fried steak (?) and sweet potatoes fries with a house salad. His food was really good according to him, the fries were warm and crisp, and the country fried steak was tasty. The only thing he didn't much care for was the white gravy which tasted a little bland. My steak was wonderful, cooked perfectly, I only wished they had thicker cuts :) I think we should have been given peanuts when we were first seated but our server may have forgotten. read more

This review is for breakfast only. I have eaten dinner here several times and would prolly give it a 3+, but this is about breakfast. Looking for a breakfast place this morning......couldn't do our normal thing and Yelp some hole in the wall in Portland where we wait in line for half hour.....had my mom with us (who doesn't walk well) and a friend who has a hip replacement pending. Those two would have majorly slowed us down!!! lol Decided on Billygans and got there around 10:30a. Restaurant was only about 1/3 full, but then it is Labor Day weekend and was great weather, so that prolly had an impact. We were seated at a table in the dining area and there were a few tables of 4's and a party of 8 nearby. That dining room is pretty loud even though not all the table were filled. Bit of a bummer for mom, but she fought though it. Bar was open and the Bloodys and Baileys arrived in quick order. The breakfast menu isn't huge, but really, how many pages of breakfast items do you need??? I had the "Roadhouse"....your basic over eaters bref of eggs, bacon, hash browns, and a couple of pancakes. Thought it was all pretty tasty. There were two omlettes at our table and the biscuits and gravy. All were given a thumbs up!! The food is amazing, there's sports on TVs everywhere and its a very welcoming and relaxing place to visit. My first visit I had the Halibut Fish & Chips and I have to say they were at least equal to the same I get on the coast fresh from restaurants there! Having lived on the Oregon Coast for over a decade this says something about the quality at Billygan's. Upon my second visit just the other night I opted to expand my experiences here. I ordered the Bacon Bleu cheese burger with the sweet potato fries upgrade and was completely blown away once again! I am a burger fanatic and as such I have had well over a dozen bleu cheese burgers in just the last years alone - this was far and beyond the single best one I've ever had! DB and I finally tried Billygan's after always seeing the sign off I5. It was OK, I gave them 3 stars and DB gives 2, I'll go back again but he won't. The salad's tasted pre-made and mine had a few ice chunks in the lettuce like they were in a super cold fridge and iced up a little, as I ate it, the ice was melting and made the salad really watery...it wasn't good. Salads came with dressing, cheese and bacon bits, no croutons or onions. I had the Chicken Fried Steak w/ Mashed Potatoes and gravy. The Fried Steak was good, good texture, really hot and the outside was still crunchy even though it had gravy on top. Oddly the Mashed Potatoes were room temp though. They weren't cold but they weren't really warm either so that was a big bummer. DB ordered a Steak with a Loaded Baked Potato and salad. He liked his salad and Baked Potato but said the Steak had quite a bit of "fatty parts" that he had to cut around. Yes, the 2 free rolls and Honey Butter were fantastic and yes you get to throw your peanut shells on the floor. Fun I guess it you're 10 but I was wearing sandals and the discarded shell pieces kept getting in between my sandal and foot. Pokey! I am a beer drinker and I wasn't impressed with their draft selection, I ordered a Long Hammer IPA, not my favorite. DB ordered a Margarita which was a little weak I thought. Took a long time to get the order taken, brought out the appetizer less that 5 mins before the main course arrived and took forever to get the check. It was not busy, maybe 10 or so customers in the restaurant with just as many if not more employees around. Not sure what the hold up was, but it did not feel like customer service was the top priority here. My hubby and I took our 19 month old here for dinner last week. It was pretty cozy sitting next to the fire and eating peanuts & throwing the shells on the floor. It was cold and down pouring outside which made it seem even cozier inside. We loved the sweet bread rolls & soft whipped butter!!!! Incredible! My hubby ordered the mushroom Swiss burger which was really good! I ordered the half salad and soup entree. I was not a fan of the chicken tortilla soup - the veggies were way too chunky & I couldn't taste chicken & the broth was really thin & lacked flavor. The salad was nothing special - your average restaurant salad mix with lackluster veggies. Note to self next time I will stick with ordering a burger. Great place for families. read more

The margaritas are decent, the fries good. Billygans is a good place for some bar food and a drink... Their chicken strips are pretty tasty and fresh for a bar style place, and tends to be my standard fare. I'm always worried I'm going to slip on the peanut shells one day. If you're in Salmon Creek and you want a steak, there aren't a lot of options. You can go to Applebee's or you can come here. Billygan's lives up to the "roadhouse" in its name. The floor is covered with discarded peanut shells, it's dark and dingy, and the employees seem like they've all had rough lives. Not an ideal steakhouse experience, but that's obvious before you even step inside. The salad was legit the best part of my meal. The steak was ok, but for the price I would've expected a higher quality cut of meat. The mash potatoes were barely warm and obviously microwaved. This place should try a little harder. read more

Made reservations for 15, arrived early, they were ready for us. No wait at all. Server very attentive and organized. Drinks for everyone arrived quickly. Took our order, delivered our salads and entree arrived shortly afterwards. She had another group of 8 and three more tables on top of it. Food was exceptional, everyone enjoyed it. (09/30/2012) that the shells are annoying but, at least, there wasn't that dust effect so evident my first visit. Suggest that, when the hostess seats a table, take two bowls with you... one with those killer peanuts, one empty. That gives your customers a place to put the shells and gives the staff a chance to do away with the slip/respiritory/visual hazzard the discarded shells create. Just sayin'. I was very pleased with the Halibut and Chips, Ceasar salad was great and our server (yes, she was scrambling to serve all her tables) was as sweet and puncutal as she could be. Great meal, great service! I had the Goucho burger and fries. The fries were piping hot and really crispy and the burger was generous with the peppers and cheese. My mom had the Reuben and it was huge. Tons of meat which was nice and warmed with crispy edges. I had an IPA and she had wine which were generous pours and well priced. As out out towers just choosing a place within close distance to our hotel we were thrilled, and will probably come back again before we leave! read more
