Well... my wife and I were visiting Boston and we weren't sure where to have a sit down breakfast. We went to one place but it was take out only and we saw some people waiting in line outside and they recommended Billy's Sub Shop. I just love this place!! This is my go to lunch place at work. I typically get the grilled chicken Greek salad with their house Greek dressing . I'm not typically a salad fan but this dressing just does it for me. I've also had the breakfast sandwiches and buffalo chicken which were also good. Billy's is my new go to sub place. I've gotten the steak and cheese here (one of their more popular options) as well as the pastrami and both are good. The subs here are a good deal - they're a decent size and my boyfriend and I will often just split one to eat. I've also gotten the home fries here cause who doesn't love a good potato? The home fries here are more soft and aren't all that crispy as a heads up but if you have a hankering for some spuds these will still do the trick. Lastly the staff here are all super friendly and nice. There's always at least a few customers at the store during the hours that I've went here but your food comes out pretty quick. I cannot say enough good things about Billy's! Me and my office-mates make our way to Billy's 2-4 times a week and it never disappoints! My 2 go-to orders are a chicken salad sandwhich or a billy's version of Micky D's fish filet. Don't be shy to talk to the owners behind the counters, they are half the reason why we return day after day. There are also specials every day. I typically never eat turkey but tried their turkey dinner for the first time today and it was sooooo good! They usually have chicken a la king on Friday which is one of my all time faves, they sell out before 2pm so go early or call them to save you a plate. Their spaghetti portion is enough to feed three people. Billy's lunch hours are crazy and usually have a line out the door but they still get your food out in a reasonable time. Definitely not the fanciest joint in town but they make up for it by offering great sandwiches in a friendly manner to a whole bunch of folks. I landed here in the middle of the lunch rush and went right to the cheesesteak sandwich, adding only mushrooms to it. We typically opt for the chicken salad which is super fresh and the turkey+warmed pastrami on a roll with LTO. They're quick, friendly, and consistent. For breakfast, the corn beef hash isn't the most "gourmet" of options you would get in Boston but is salty and delicious. So I go to school close by so it was a convenient place to grab lunch. I've got food from here probably ten times. And every time I've been let down. Subs are light, worse than subway even. I'm not on a diet though so I wasn't happy. Anyway I figured I'd get breakfast instead this time. So I ordered French toast... How could I go wrong?? The first time I ordered it here it was so under cooked I had to throw it away. It was only like 6 dollars so i figured no big deal right...The next day I still had the same craving so I go there to give it another try. Same thing still under cooked. Seriously... Maybe the cook just doesn't know any better... So about a week later I go in and tell them can you please cook the French toast make it well done but obviously not burnt. I waited 25 minutes for under cooked French toast again! Obviously I didn't even check it until I got back to where I was so it made it even worse and more of a waste of time. Subs are rather light, French toast is comparable to soggy bread. However, their English muffin with bacon was stacked with bacon and good and only 5 dollars.. Made a huge mistake in not reading the other reviews about portion sizes before ordering here and as a result had waaaay too much food as a result. One of those cozy sub shops where you can clearly tell it's been there forever (judging by the decor) but don't let that deter you from the menu options! I ordered the buffalo sandwich as well as the chicken parm sub. Both were delicious and clearly not pre-frozen. The prices were pretty reasonable for the sheer quantity that you get here! I came here for lunch with a couple friends and the place got packed around noon. Recommend getting there between 11:30-11:45. I got the Steak Bomb (no peppers) and my friends got the Pastrami Sub, Chicken Parm, and the Breakfast Plate with Pancakes. The owners are so friendly and welcoming. Today I felt like having a good sit down breakfast so I walked to this spot and can I say I'm so glad I did. It was easy to find this hidden gem for sure. It was a spot the locals go to, family owned, cozy spot. The lady at the front was kind, and personable. I placed my order of the western omelette and a drink. In all I think I waited about 5-7 mins for my order to come out. And it was awesome!! It was hot, tasty, cheezy everything hit the spot. Good size for price and well worth it. [BREAKFAST ONLY REVIEW: No subs were tried before the writing of this review] Wandering along South End, looking for breakfast I ended up at Billy's to find myself staring at a white and black plastic menu board from times certainly not recent. Subs, cause this a sub shop,eggs most non-fancy style, pancakes, waffles and more to choose from. Coffee and tea and things bottled to drink. A literal mom and a pop behind the counter and their sons buzzing between the kitchen and the sandwich bar. Patrons comprising of uniformed fire-fighters of varying shapes, police officers, people in pajamas, construction workers, curious tourists and the to-go clientele of trendily dressed office goers. Emulating any avid film watcher's vision of the typical Bostonian breakfast place from times old, Billy's with the smell of cheap fat in the air has atmosphere which cannot be reproduced by any of your fancy brunch places. I would have the western omelette with cheese and home fries and come back the next day for some blueberry pancakes. The omelette was filled with american cheese and bell peppers with ham and onion, served with heavily buttered toast. Crying out for heat and crunch, these eggs came with lukewarm, some soft some too dry potatoes. The pancakes were thick, fluffy and came not with the best of syrups. But then one looks at the prices and there isn't much room to complain for a hearty meal under 10 bucks in what is one of the most expensive cities of the nation. For the food at the price I would give Billy's 3.5/5, but for the people watching opportunities and generally retaining a vibe which seems to offer the authenticity which a lot of out-of-towners are looking for, I'd give it a 4/5. Love Billy's, right by my workplace and if there is one thing you know, if local cops frequent a joint, you know it is a good deal. This place usually gets packed around 12:15-12:45 so I try to get there a little early to avoid lines. Love their steak and cheese sub. You have options with onions, peppers, mushrooms or all. Their pastrami and buffalo chicken sandwich is are my go to options to switch around. They even got a cheeseburger sub which I tried but it's too large to finish in a meal. I love this place. My go to is the pastrami and Swiss sub. I fly out of Boston to the west coast a lot and I love that they are open and make sandwiches so early.
