I was really looking forward to eating here and there are too many good reviews for not even okay food.... The catfish breading is extremely thick and doesn't go well with catfish..... my daughter got the grilled chicken and while it was tender, it no longer tasted like chicken, it was solid onions and green pepper flavor! I don't know about the rest of y'all but we like chicken to still taste like chicken and it was extremely dry. Mashed potatoes were very very loose, almost water downed. Their sweet tea was great! I'm going to preface this review that I have been to 2 meat and 3s in Nashville, Arnolds and Big Al's Deli. So meat and 3s in Nashville have been given a very high bar based off these two experiences. I had smothered pork chops, turnip greens, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. Hands down the best part of my meal was the smothered pork chop. Tender, juicy and they gravy had lots of flavoring. What made it perfect was that it was not too salty. The sides could have been better. The turnip greens had a little flavor, with the addition of pepper sauce they were my favorite side. The mashed potatoes actually made me wonder I'd they were boxed potatoes or not. I'm not saying they are but the fact that I tried them and thought about it should say plenty. The macaroni and cheese was bland. There was macaroni and cheese, but there were no distinct or developed flavors. If you are already in Franklin this is an acceptable option. I ordered the seasoning "hot," with sides of cornbread stuffing and fried okra. The sides were forgettable, with the fried okra tasting greasy and the stuffing mixed with tired looking onion and celery slices. The chicken was overly breaded and sodden with an oily red sauce that wasn't spicy enough. I was reminded of Buffalo wings of yore, sans the creamy blue cheese dipping sauce. read more

As a spicy food lover, I didn't find the hot chicken to be anything spectacular...and my brother said I shouldn't say that too loud down south! I got the damn hot(!) Hattie B's chicken thigh quarter, corn and coleslaw. The young man taking my order asked me twice if I was sure I wanted the damn hot. I said I love spicy so yes. It was not very spicy. Corn was bland and very canned tasting. Coleslaw was bland and thick cut cabbage, not very coleslaw like. Grandma got hot chicken quarter and it was also just ok. She didn't like the corn or coleslaw either, and her mashed potatoes were very boxed mashed tasting. Nothing that wow'd us. My brother got an unspiced chicken, mashed potatoes and carrot casserole (like sweet potato casserole but with cooked carrots). Very sweet...unnecessarily sweet IMO. The chicken had better flavor, however, than the two hot versions and was great just plain. My son liked his chicken tenders but none of us liked the Mac and Cheese; again, very bland tasting. Their sides are regular sides that you'll find at any normal meat & 3. I usually stick with the jalapeño cornbread, mashed potatoes & gravy. The desserts are an added bonus. The food was great! The menu is a little creative and changed a bit from day to day. Your meal consists of just what you want it to. It's a lunch line. You stand in line, get your throw away plates, tell them what you want, pay and find yourself a seat. They have outdoor dressing too. I chose a meat and three sides. It only cost about $10. We got a dessert to share for a couple of bucks. You can choose the large or the small. The small was plenty for both of us. It was banana pudding which tasted great. There was just enough cookie, plenty of bananas and it was thick. The meatloaf was made ketchup style. I wish it was a bigger slice. I chose two of my sides because they were not the standard carrot souffle and squash casserole. Both were very good, I'd love to have them again. The cornbread was sweet and fluffy. First time visit. Got there right as they opened at 11 am on a Wednesday. Ordered the Meat & 2... the hot chicken tenders . They have mild,medium,hot, damn hot...I got "hot". My 2 sides were mac 'n' cheese and blackeyed peas. I tried both the sides first to judge them fairly before blowing-out my tastebuds on the hot chicken. The mac 'n' cheese is your typical soupy version you find a LOT around Middle TN . Slightly overcooked elbow mac and somewhat bland cream sauce lacking in cheese flavor. The blackeyed peas seemed to be cooked with a little onion but other than also very little seasoning. I guess you need to add salt and pepper or a dash of sauce to liven them up. The cornbread muffin was kinda dry. They could fix that simply by adding some creamed corn to the batter and make it stand out a bit. The chicken tenders were done nicely and arrived with my sides within about five minutes so major win there. Pretty meaty and juicy and had the expected amount of heat. This is the Hattie B's recipe. I enjoyed them. Other than the rather bland sides this was a pretty good deal at $11.50. Soda fountain is $2.50 so with tax it came out to $15.36. The line builds rather quickly here and goes about 10+ deep and was that way for the entire time I was there. It's clearly a popular place for takeout and also older diners who like the classic chicken/turkey and other sides they offer. Solid but not spectacular. read more
